explorations. This brochure outlines the Hancock County
Extension summer explorations events. Activities are open
to all youth. Use the enclosed registration form to sign up.

EXPLORE IT: LAWYER
When: Monday, June 4
from 1:00—3:00 PM
Who: 4—6 grades (grade just completed)
What: Have you ever wondered what the inside of a courtroom looks like, and what it might be like to be in the jury’s seat? Collin Davison will be helping us learn what goes on behind the
closed doors!
Where: Meet at Hancock County Extension
Office and walk to the courthouse.

SALT WATER ETCHING When: Tuesday, June 5 from 1:00—3:00 PM
Who: 3—12 grades (grade just completed)
What: Join us in creating your own personalized water bottle! Salt water etching, a design that will last
and is dishwasher safe!

What: Join First Citizens employees as we discover what happens behind the scenes of a bank. What does a
banker do? Why do people need banks?

SHARPIE COASTERS

What: Create your own colorful coaster! Using sharpies and rubbing alcohol to create
a watercolor looking masterpiece!

JUNIOR OVERNIGHT
CAMP
When: Sunday, June 10 check in from 5:30–6:00 PM, check out
Monday, June 11 at 6:00 PM
Who: 4—6 grades

What: Sleep in tents, cook over
campfire, canoe, fish, and swim.
Where: Crystal Lake Park, 1045 320th St.
Cost: $20, includes all meals
and activities.

STAIN GLASS PICTURE

PAN PIPE FLUTE WORKSHOP
When: Friday, June 8 from 10:00–11:30 AM
Who: 3—12 grades (grade just completed)
What: Build your own pan pipe flute from PVC pipe. Learn about how to change pitch and
how flute’s make sound.

EXPLORE IT: VETERINARIAN
When: Tuesday, June 19

Who: K—4 grades (grade just completed)
What: What does it mean to be a vet? How do you take vitals of your pets? What
are common pet diseases? How are they treated?
Where: Meet at the Britt Vet Clinic, walk to the library, pick up at library.

ART IN THE PARK—
UNDER THE SEA
When: Wednesday, June 20 from 1:00–2:00 PM
Who: 2 groups, both from 1:00-2:00 PM

What: Join us in partnership with the Clear Lake Arts Center and the City of Garner for a creative adventure, come ready for some “under the
sea” fun as you learn about art and have a “whale” of a good time!
Where: Tourist Park, Garner
Cost: $5

US BANK STADIUM
TOUR, MINNEAPOLIS
When: Monday, June 18
from 6:00 AM–9:00 PM
Who: 6—8 grades
(grade just completed)
What: Tour the US Bank Stadium. Learn about how the stadium was designed to minimize its energy, water, and waste rates. Enjoy your sack lunch on the banks of the Mississippi river and then discover the human body, how to make waves and tornados, and the science of sports as you check out the Science Museum
of Minnesota.
Where: Meet at Hancock County Extension Office
Cost: $25. Bring your own sack lunch, souvenir money, and money
for fast food supper.
RSVP: Friday, June 8. Space is limited to 50 (3 counties).
ART IN THE PARK—
WILD ANIMALS
When: Wednesday, June 13
from 1:00–2:00 PM
Who: 2 groups, both from 1:00-2:00 PM K—2 grades (grade just completed)
3—5 grades (grade just completed)
What: Join us in partnership with the Clear Lake Arts Center and the City of Garner for a creative adventure where you’ll explore exciting “wild animal” art. Come ready to meet
new friends, make new things, and have a grrrreat time!

SLIME WORKSHOP
When: Thursday, June 14 from 1:00–2:30 PM
Who: K—8 grades (grade just completed)
What: Make slime, discover the properties of slime, experiment with different slime
recipes and what makes good slime!

IMPORTANT POLICY TO READ:
Due to the volume of registrations we receive, the registration form along
with payment is required in order for registrations to be processed.
Registrations will be accepted on a first come basis to Hancock County
Extension Office, 327 West 8th Street, Garner, M-F 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
If your event has already met a capacity limit we will add you to a waiting
list for that event.
If attendee cancels, it must be done by RSVP date to receive a refund.
Many events have waitlists. If you are unable able to attend, please call
us so those on the waitlist might be able to participate.
All events are subject to change.
Registration form copies are available from our website, or call us at
641-923-2856.
Scholarships are available by request to pay for registration costs.

BUBBLE MANIA

What: You will be bubbling with excitement in this camp! Build your own bubble blowers and actually go inside a giant bubble. Bubble crafts and experiments will help you discover the fun and
science of bubbles!

BUCKET BOTTLE CALF/LAMB
101 WORKSHOP
When: Monday, July 9 from 6:00—7:30 PM
Who: Anyone
What: Are you new to showing bucket bottle calves/lambs? Bring your calf/lamb with you. You can get your animal tagged, entered for the fair, and learn how to get both you and your animal show ring
ready!
Where: Hancock County District Fairgrounds, Britt

A DAY AS A DOCTOR
When: K—1 grades Tuesday, July 10
from 8:00 AM —3:00 PM
2—5 grades Thursday, July 12

What: Spend the day as a doctor, tour the hospital, get your own stethoscope, dress like a
surgeon, learn about your body, and more!
Where: Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt
Cost: $15, includes lunch and snack.

CANVAS PAINTING
When: Wednesday, July 11, 2 sessions offered:

What: Have you ever wanted to give your favorite picture a new look? Joins us for some fun
transforming your favorite image into art.
Where: Meet at the Hancock County Extension Office and walk to North
Iowa Design. Bring a hairdryer. Pick up at North Iowa Design.
Cost: $10
RSVP: Friday, June 29. Space is limited to 5 each session. Must bring
in or email a digital photo to use by June 29.
EXPLORE IT: TEACHER/
PRINCIPAL
When: Wednesday, August 1
from 10:00 AM—12:30 PM
Who: K—4 grades (grade just completed)
What: Join Mr. Meyering and Ms. Stacy as you explore and look behind the scene of what a teacher and a principal does when you’re not looking! You will get a chance to be the teacher and then walk over to the school and find out if the principal really does live there! Bring a
sack lunch and we’ll end with playing at the playground.
Where: Hancock County Extension Office, walk to school, pick-up at
GHV Elementary School playground.
Cost: $5

EXPLORE IT: DETECTIVE
When: Friday, August 3 from 10:00—12:00 PM

What: Navigate around a crime scene and see if you can solve the crime. Also, get a first hand experience of what goes on behind the crime scene
from Ray Penning from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

MONARCHS ON THE MOVE

butterfly habitat.

What: We are partnering with Clear Lake Arts Center to bring you the Garner Summer Arts Program. Each day you’ll be making something new, and every activity will show a different way of creating art. If you like being artistic and trying new things, this is the place for you! The week will end
with a special party so our little artists can show off their work.

What: Dive into the world of a Boss with LEGO’s! Learn what it takes to create a new idea, develop a plan, and share your results through creativity, innovation, and communication. Participants will work in teams to develop an idea for making their community a better place to live. Using LEGO’s, teams will work together to build a model, create a presentation poster
and market their idea.

Who: Anyone exhibiting 4-H exhibits at fair. Get help entering your projects in the new FairEntry system. Parents are welcome to attend.
What: Required for Jr. 4-H members. Get a step ahead by visiting with judges to find out what is expected of your exhibit.

What: Fair entries are due each year on July 1. Any entries you are taking to the Hancock County District Fair need to be entered in FairEntry at https://hancockdf.fairentry.com on/before this date.
CONCARD CARE 4-H (Service)
When: Friday, July 20, 2018 from 3:00—4:00 PM
Who: Any 4-Her who would like to show exhibits, skits or small animals to residents.
What: Join us in this community service project by bringing the fair to residents at Concord Care Center.

Saturday, July 21 is the fair set-up day. Tuesday, July 24 is the static exhibit judging day. Monday, July 30 is the livestock auction.
