AMAZING IN MOTIONFor the latest RX 450h we challenged ourselves with creating the best, most

innovative, luxury crossover ever built. We started by designing a bolder exterior

centred on the Lexus signature ‘spindle grille’. Next, our engineers developed a

second-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive. Featuring advanced technologies like

Remote Touch and Head-Up Display, it’s an extraordinarily enjoyable crossover to

drive. To achieve this, we tuned it at the Nürburgring, proving – quite literally – that

Developed in the world’s most advanced driving simulator, and tested over many

hundreds of thousands of kilometres, the RX 450h handles with the poise and

precision of our luxury sedans. While a stiffer chassis and double wishbone rear

suspension reduce ‘body roll’ around corners, innovative all-wheel drive technology

delivers superb road holding and confidence over rougher terrain. For added

refinement, optional air suspension lowers the car at higher speeds for reduced wind

resistance. The latest Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management is fitted as standard.

Viewed from the side, the long, sleek cabin of the RX 450h creates a powerful presence

and promises generous interior space. Featuring strong and expressive L-finesse

(L= Leading edge) front styling – with a distinctive Lexus signature ‘spindle grille’ – this

stunning crossover is more dynamic than ever. Arrowhead-shaped LED daytime

running lights underline the crossover’s distinctive look. Class-leading aerodynamics

result from features like smooth underbody covers, aerodynamic winglets on the

In its superbly tranquil and comfortable cabin, the RX 450h will keep you relaxed, even

on long journeys. The sumptuous driver’s seat offers extensive electric adjustments

while, for ease of entry, it also slides back and the steering wheel retracts. Rear

seats slide too, but also recline or fold for extra comfort and space (see page 41).

Exquisitely stitched leather is available with the finest semi-aniline leather upholstery

reserved for Luxury grade versions. Gentle lighting illuminates the start button and

gearshift, and storage compartments open and close with the calming motion of a

traditional Japanese sliding door.

With a host of intelligent technology, the RX 450h is extraordinarily enjoyable to

drive. Remote Touch offers seamless interaction with the navigation display and

15-speaker Mark Levinson® audio, while Head-Up Display lets you concentrate

on the road ahead. To aid manoeuvring, Parking Assist Monitor and Side Monitor

show live images of the area behind and beside the car. Extensively tested in arctic

and desert conditions, the cabin warms up as quickly as it cools down, and a filter

system reduces pollen and dust.

DELIVERING AMAZING FULL HYBRID PERFORMANCE, THE RX 450h IS INCREDIBLY RELAXING TO DRIVE.

Powered by the latest Lexus Hybrid Drive, this pioneering crossover intelligently

combines a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with two high-output electric motors for

seamless all-wheel drive (see page 30). Accelerate to 100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds,

in a crossover that emits just 145 g/km of CO2*. Alternatively, use EV (Electric

Vehicle) mode to drive in near silence, using no petrol and emitting zero CO2 or

NOX. The RX 450h is also very practical; the hybrid battery never needs charging

and occupies minimum room, resulting in generous luggage space.

INTELLIGENT PROTECTIONPRE-CRASH TECHNOLOGY HELPS YOU AVOID DANGER, WHILE TEN AIRBAGS PROTECT OCCUPANTS IN A COLLISION.

Equipped with our latest Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management and powerful

ventilated disc brakes, the RX 450h is engineered to avoid danger. An optional

Pre-Crash Safety system uses millimetre-wave radar to detect objects in front of the

car and, where necessary, warns the driver and prepares for impact. In the event of

a collision, it’s comforting to know you’re protected by an exceptionally rigid, high-

tensile steel safety cell. The RX 450h is also equipped with 10 airbags, including a

breakthrough twin-chamber front passenger airbag.

TAKUMI CRAFTSMANSHIP

PRODUCTION IS OVERSEEN BY ‘TAKUMI’ MASTER CRAFTSPEOPLE, WHO ALSO SCRUTINISE EACH RX 450h BEFORE A FINAL 30 KM TEST DRIVE.

The award-winning quality of our RX 450h crossover begins at the Kyushu plant,

where production is overseen by Lexus ‘Takumi’ master craftspeople. Inside the plant,

we assemble our cars in clean room conditions; employees wear pocketless, anti-static

clothing and wash their shoes before entering the line. A water screen – nicknamed

Niagara – reduces particles ever further. Gleaming paintwork is produced by hand

sanding each foundation coat (a time-consuming process normally reserved for

coach-built cars). Finally, to check for leaks, every RX 450h undergoes a special

‘typhoon test’ in a high-pressure water chamber.

CLEAN ENGINEERINGTHE RX 450h HAS THE CLEANEST AND MOST EFFICIENT FULL HYBRID DRIVETRAIN IN CLASS, AND LOW-ENERGY LED LIGHTS.

Everything about the RX 450h is designed to minimise environmental impact

and reduce its carbon footprint. At the end of its life, up to 85% of the car can be

recycled, and an innovative process ensures that 95% of the battery can be reused.

For instance, the case is reprocessed in steel manufacturing, and the power cells are

recycled using an induction-based, vacuum-thermal system pioneered by Lexus.

Production at the Kyushu ‘Eco Plant’ is organised using our world-famous lean

manufacturing techniques, with waste being kept to an absolute minimum.

FULL HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

POWER CONTROL UNITThe ‘brain’ of Lexus Hybrid Drive, the Power Control

Unit (PCU) constantly optimises the allocation of power

resources – electric, petrol or a combination of both.

The PCU also manages the process of charging the

hybrid battery, either by allocating engine power to

drive the generator or through regenerative braking.

ECO MODEThe driver can also activate ECO mode that retunes

the throttle control and the air conditioning to reduce

both emissions and fuel consumption, thus lowering

the car’s carbon footprint.

ADVANCED HYBRID BATTERYLexus Hybrid Drive features a high-output, 288 V

nickel-metal hydride battery controlled by sophisticated

energy-management software. Located under the

rear seats – without compromising interior space – the

battery never requires external charging and is regularly

recharged to its optimum level during normal driving.

EV (ELECTRIC VEHICLE) MODEWith sufficient battery charge, EV mode lets you drive at

lower speeds over shorter distances using only electric

power. Just touch a button on the centre console and

EV is activated for an easy, relaxed, whisper quiet drive

that’s emissions free and consumes no fuel. This is ideal,

for instance, when driving in slow-moving traffic or

enclosed car parks.

3.5-LITRE V6 PETROL ENGINEAn integral element of Lexus Hybrid Drive, this

highly advanced V6 engine helps deliver a unique

combination of exciting power (299 DIN hp), low

emissions and frugal fuel consumption. Able to smoothly

shut down when not required, the engine is tuned for

energy-efficient running. An innovative Exhaust Heat

Recovery unit also allows the engine to switch off

earlier and more often, leading to a reduction in fuel

consumption and emissions.

REGENERATIVE BRAKINGWhen braking or decelerating, kinetic energy – which

would otherwise be lost as heat – is captured by the

electric motors and converted into electric power. This

is stored in the hybrid battery for later use when driving

in Electric Vehicle mode or accelerating swiftly.

In 2004, Lexus became the first premium carmaker to perfect Full Hybrid technology. Since then, over 650,000 Lexus hybrid models have been sold. Comprising a 3.5-litre V6 Atkinson Cycle petrol engine and two high output electric motors, the RX 450h’s Lexus Hybrid Drive offers excellent driving pleasure and low environmental impact, with combined CO2 emissions of just 145 g/km and fuel consumption of only 6.3 l/100 km*. EXPERIENCE LEXUS HYBRID DRIVE

START UP, DRIVING OFFWhen starting off, the powerful front and rear electric motors can swiftly propel the

RX 450h up to 65 km/h, with electric power supplied by the hybrid battery. At

this point the vehicle is almost silent, uses no petrol and produces zero emissions.

NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONSAt speeds above 65 km/h the ultra-smooth V6 Atkinson Cycle petrol engine cuts in,

almost silently, while still receiving assistance from the electric motors when required.

Through the near perfect distribution of its petrol and electric power sources, the

RX 450h provides extraordinary driving enjoyment – together with low emissions

and modest fuel consumption.

FULL THROTTLE ACCELERATIONAccelerate powerfully and the combined power of the electric motors instantaneously

supplements the 3.5-litre 249 DIN hp V6 petrol engine. Together they deliver a

potent surge of torque to provide breathtakingly fast linear acceleration precisely

when you need it.

DECELERATION, STOPPING, BRAKINGWhen decelerating or coming to a halt, the petrol engine turns off, cutting emissions to

zero. Brake, or take your foot off the accelerator, and regenerative braking harnesses

the kinetic energy lost in other cars. It converts this into electrical energy for storage

in the hybrid battery, which is one reason why you never need to recharge a Lexus

Full Hybrid.

DOUBLE WISHBONE SUSPENSIONA sophisticated double wishbone rear suspension delivers outstanding road holding,

performance sedan-like cornering characteristics and superb straight-line stability.

Due to its compact design, the suspension encroaches far less into the rear luggage

compartment.

n ACTIVE STABILISERSFor even more dynamic control, an active stabiliser system is offered on the RX 450h.

It is the first of its kind on any crossover. The system uses electrically adjustable front

and rear anti-roll bars to deliver less body lean around corners and precision steering

response during high-performance driving, without any compromise to ride comfort.

DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE

n ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED AIR SUSPENSIONFor an even more refined and stable drive, the RX 450h can be ordered with electronically controlled air suspension. Unlike conventional coil springs, air suspension

achieves a consistent vehicle height regardless of the number of occupants and the amount of luggage on board. Furthermore, when travelling at high speeds, the vehicle

will automatically lower, reducing wind resistance and ensuring driving stability. In addition, at the touch of a button, air suspension also allows owners to lower the rear of

their RX 450h for easier loading of heavy or bulky objects.

The RX 450h was tested and refined in the world’s most advanced driving simulator – and then driven over many hundreds of thousands of kilometres. All-Wheel Drive technology delivers superb road holding, particularly when cornering, and offers confident traction over rougher terrain.

ENGINEERED STRENGTHCrumple zones front and rear absorb energy in an accident, while the steering

column is also engineered to collapse in a severe frontal collision. Strengthened pillars,

floor members and side impact beams absorb and dissipate energy even further.

Roof and pillars are trimmed with impact-absorbing material to help prevent head

injuries, while an energy-absorbing seat design minimises the risk of a spinal injury.

TEN AIRBAGSThe RX 450h is equipped with ten airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. In a collision,

impact intensity sensors activate front dual-stage driver/passenger airbags and side

airbags accordingly. Front seat passengers also benefit from knee airbags, while

curtain shield airbags run the full length of the side windows.

The RX 450h crossover is equipped with our latest Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, and is available with Pre-Crash Safety technology. In the unlikely event of a collision, you and your passengers are protected by an exceptionally rigid safety cell and 10 airbags.

ADVANCED SAFETY

n ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROLUsing the Pre-Crash Safety radar, Adaptive Cruise

Control (ACC) maintains a set distance between

the RX 450h and the vehicle ahead, even if that

vehicle varies its speed. Once the road is clear, ACC

automatically returns to the originally specified cruising

speed.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE-FORCE DISTRIBUTIONElectronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) works with

the Anti-lock Braking System to ensure that the most

effective brake force is applied to each wheel, according

to road conditions. By preventing the RX 450h’s wheels

from locking, EBD helps to maintain sure-footed stability

during cornering and braking.

n PRE-CRASH SAFETYA millimetre-wave radar sensor detects objects in

front of the RX 450h. If it senses a high-risk situation, it

warns you and then activates Pre-Crash Brake Assist.

If a collision is then deemed unavoidable, Pre-Crash

Brake and Pre-Crash Seatbelts are also activated for

your protection.

TRACTION CONTROLTraction Control (TRC) heightens the RX 450h’s

ability to grip the road, particularly when travelling

over slippery or uneven road surfaces. If TRC detects

that one or more wheels are starting to spin and lose

traction, the system’s skid control computer instantly

determines the best way to restore traction to that

wheel by reducing power, or even braking.

VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROLVehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps prevent loss of

control, particularly when cornering quickly or at the

onset of a skid. Stability is improved by the selective

application of brakes and/or power reduction. In poor

conditions, you can cancel the Traction Control and

VSC functions for extra traction when manoeuvring

at low speeds in mud or snow.

BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEMBrake Assist System (BAS) comes into action during

emergency braking when many drivers fail to apply

sufficient force to the brake pedal, or release brake

pressure too soon. If either of these situations occurs,

the BAS fitted to the RX 450h anticipates the need for

extra braking force and applies it automatically.

HALOGEN HEADLIGHTSFeaturing halogen bulbs, the headlight

design of the RX 450h is modern and

impactful. Light Emitting Diode (LED)

daytime running lights create a distinctive

appearance and ensure the RX 450h is

highly visible to other road users.

n INTELLIGENT LED HEADLIGHTS

To help you see around corners, an

Intelligent-Adaptive Front-lighting

System automatically swivels the

headlights into approaching bends. Low-

beam LED headlights offer extremely

focused light, use less energy and last

longer than conventional bulbs.

18" ALLOY WHEELSLightweight 5-spoke design 18-inch

alloy wheels have a beautiful silver

metallic finish. Specified with 235/60

R18 tyres, this combination contributes

to lower CO2 emissions and fuel

consumption.

n 19" ALLOY WHEELSThese 15-spoke, 19-inch alloys have

been given a sporty new look with a

subtle, light grey shading. They are

specified with 235/55 R19 tyres for

exceptional roadholding.

n 19" ALLOY WHEELSA brand new 10-spoke, 19-inch design

that adds to the car’s powerful presence.

The wheels are fitted with 235/55 R19

tyres for sure-footed grip.

n XENON HEADLIGHTSHigh Intensity Discharge (HID) xenon

headlights are specified with auto-

levelling and high-pressure cleaners.

These, and LED daytime running lights,

are fitted as standard, with Intelligent-

Adaptive Front-lighting System (I-AFS).

INTEGRATED WIPER/AERIALThe spoiler not only lowers the car’s drag

coefficient. It also cleverly integrates

the rear wiper and has an internal

radio antenna, which removes the

need for a conventional aerial. A high-

mounted, ultra-visible brake light is also

incorporated.

n AUTO-FOLDING AND DIMMING

The door mirrors can be folded in

electrically to help negotiate narrow

spaces and, when parked, there is

less risk of damage. Electro chromatic

technology also dims the mirrors to

prevent the risk of being dazzled by

following traffic.

ACTIVE BRAKE LIGHTSRear light clusters feature an array of

LEDs to ensure the RX 450h is highly

visible to following traffic. When braking

heavily, the brake lights pulse rapidly to

provide an effective warning to following

vehicles.

HEATED DOOR MIRRORSAerodynamically designed, the

door mirror housings incorporate

an integral turn signal indicator and

discreet puddle light. The mirrors are

electrically adjustable and can be heated

as required.

n PANORAMIC ROOFThis large glass, factory-fitted panoramic

sunroof adds a feeling of freedom,

spaciousness and sunny enjoyment to

the RX 450h’s cabin.

n PARKING SENSORSDiscreetly located in the front and rear

bumpers, the sensors (two extra have

been added to the front for even greater

sensitivity) continuously calculate the

distance to the nearest object. The

intensity of audio and visual warnings

indicates the space remaining prior to

contact.

n SUNROOFThe electric, tilt and slide, glass sunroof

lets the desired amount of light and air

into the cabin. One-touch control is

quick and convenient, while a manual

sunblind provides shade as desired.

n EASY LOADINGFor extra convenience, a vehicle height

adjustment switch allows the rear of the

RX 450h to be lowered for easy loading

(for models with air suspension). And a

remote controlled tailgate adds even

further comfort when your arms are full

of shopping.

INTERIOR FEATURES

STANDARD CENTRE CONSOLEThe front centre console is ergonomically

designed to let the driver intuitively

operate the gearshift and control audio

and climate systems. Audio and climate

controls are positioned so that they

can also be operated by the front seat

passenger.

n LEATHER / WOOD DESIGN

On the Luxury grade, the steering wheel

can optionally be specified in a leather/

wood design. There is a choice of wood

colour and finish. This steering wheel

design can be heated.

SEAT FLEXIBILITYWith all rear seats folded down, there’s

room to carry bulky objects. When the

central section is lowered, longer items

such as skis can be accomodated. Or,

with one of the wider rear seats dropped,

there’s space to stow a mountain bike.

n HEATED / VENTILATED SEATS

Our smooth leather seats have a

heating function, whereas the semi-

aniline ones have both heating and

ventilation features. The driver and front

seat passenger have individual controls

so that they can both find their ideal

comfort levels. This adds to the sense

of bespoke luxury and is especially

welcome in extreme weather conditions.

n PARKING MONITORWith reverse gear engaged, live images

of the area behind the RX 450h appear

in a section of the rear-view mirror,

making it much easier to reverse into

tight parking spaces. The images are

relayed via a miniature camera located

in the tailgate.

LEATHER STEERING WHEELA new 3-spoke leather trimmed steering

wheel has been ergonomically designed

for the RX 450h. It is high-grip and

tactile with buttons for audio, display,

phone and voice command positioned

close to the thumb tips.

REAR SEAT COMFORTThe rear seats can be slid backwards or

forwards to increase either boot space or

rear legroom, depending on your travel
