A licensed attorney for more than 15 years, Sylvia has spent her career working to develop innovative solutions to large-scale problems so theycan be implemented at the local level. professionals, with stakeholder participation from the community. Sylvia arrived in Waller County in 2000, where she founded and directed Prairie View A&M University’s domestic violence and sexual assault program for six
Sylvia pioneered work in the area of bullying, with a post-graduate fellowship, upon completing law school in 1995. She developed model educator in-service programs, litigated school violence cases, and drafted legislation that is the cornerstone of today’s mandatory school bullying policies. Much of Sylvia’s work has been funded through her grant writing efforts by which she has secured more than $2 million dollars in funding. These efforts include working with more than 12 law enforcement agencies in Hidalgo County to adopt the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model. If elected, she will promote the establishment of a permanent grant writing position for Waller County.
View City Council from 2001-2004. She served a term as Waller County’s Precinct 3 Commissioner from 2009-2012. Sylvia attended The University of Texas at Austin and has a BA in History. Sylvia earned her law degree from The University of Texas. She has called Prairie View her home for 15 years. Sylvia has two children - Ursula, a sophomore at Columbia University and Amanda, a high school freshman.
