Topic 1: 200• Question: Who was Frederick Douglass • Answer: He was an escaped slave who fled

North and lived with his free wife. While enslaved, he managed to learn to read and write. He became an icon of the abolitionist movement for his moving speeches denouncing the institution of slavery. Also, he published a newspaper called the North Star (For additional information see page 245)

slavery, Slaveholders would be compensated for their loss of slave(s)

• Supporters of gradualism thought this would give the South’s economy time to adjust to the loss of enslaved labor
