1. The Awards

a) Three awards will be presented - one of £10,000, one of £5,000, and one of£2,500 - to provide financial support fortalented new writers to complete theirfirst book of non-fiction for a mainstreamaudience, especially by buying them timefor writing or research.b) The judges will be responsible forselecting the winning submissions. Thesewill be announced at a reception inLondon in October 2020, at which thewinners would be present.

2. Eligible Entries

a) The Awards are open to writers fortheir first commissioned works of non-fiction. Entrants may have previouslypublished work for an academicaudience, or may have edited books ofwriting mainly by others, but thesubmitted entry must be their firstsubstantial work of non-fiction for ageneral readership. Entries from writerswell-established in another genre areunlikely to be accepted.b) The writer must be resident in theUnited Kingdom (UK) or Republic orIreland (RoI).

i. a letter of support from the publishingeditor (1 page)ii. a statement from the writer abouttheir work and how an Award wouldfurther this particular project, includinga brief summary of their financialcircumstances (max. 2 pages)iii. a synopsis of the book, outlining thetime frame for research and writing(max. 2 pages)

iv. a draft chapter of the book or other briefsample of writing up to 20 pagesv. a signed copy of the contract with thepublisher.b) Please fill out the form opposite andsend completed applications to:[email protected] withRSL Giles St Aubyn Awards for Non-Fictionas the subject line. We are currentlyunable to accept entries by post.c) The advance should be the full amountshown on the contract, before deductions.d) If the delivery date on the contract doesnot match what is listed on the form or falls before 1 March, you must also include written proof of any extension granted.

d) Once published, we request that thebook includes an acknowledgement,crediting the RSL Giles St Aubyn Awardsfor Non-Fiction, and that a copy is sent tothe RSL.e) The Awards are administered in allrespects by the Royal Society of Literature.

c) The submission date to the publisher should be no earlier than 1 March 2021, as the money is expected to be used to finish the project/work, for example to allow time away from other employment or to finance research, including travel.d) Only books due to be published in the UK or RoI, by UK- or RoI-based publishers will be considered.e) Books written in another language, or to be translated into English, are not eligible.f) There is no limit to the number of projects each publisher, agent or editor may submit. We would not expect a submission of more than one work by any one writer.

c) The judging will take the following intoconsideration:i. literary qualityii. financial neediii. evidence that the Award would make adifference to the writer and their book.

a) Applications must be submitted by5pm on Friday 31 July and include allof the the following as separate documents with no page numbers:
