Fragile Materials - it’s not just about roofs!

Deaths caused by falls through fragile surfaces occur mainly to those working in the building maintenance sector when carrying out small, short-term maintenance and cleaning jobs.

Working on or near fragile surfaces is extremely dangerous and the precautions are well established.

The law says that contractors and employers must manage the danger by avoiding work on or near fragile surfaces and controlling any remaining risk by use of stagings, guard rails, and fall arrest systems.

If inspectors encounter failure to control risk, work will be prohibited and prosecution may follow.

The following are likely to be fragile:u old roof lights u old liner panels on built-up sheeted roofs u non-reinforced fibre cement sheets u corroded metal sheets u glass (including wired glass) u rotted chipboard u slates and tiles u troughing units u gullies u manholes andu post holes.

Remember: Incidents are not inevitable. They can be prevented by careful planning, using trained and experienced workers with suitable equipment and employing a high level of supervision.

DON’T RISK YOUR OWN LIFE OR THE LIVES OF OTHERS.
