Rare, hand-embroidered organic wedding dresses hickory-smoked by Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Q

In a beautiful marriage between Southern
food and homegrown fashion, world-
renowned designer Natalie Chanin’s hand-
sewn dresses were pit-smoked at Jim ‘N
Nicks Bar-B-Q for the fifteenth-annual
Southern Foodways Alliance Symposium
in Oxford, Mississippi titled, “Barbecue: An
Exploration of Pitmasters, Places, Smoke
and Sauce.” Starting this month, the pieces
are displayed exclusively for a second time
at Warehouse Row.
This chapter in the event series Crafted
by Southern Hands brings Chanin and
her Alabama Chanin design team to
Chattanooga July 25 through August 29.
The opening reception on July 25 will honor
Chanin’s rare, hickory-smoked collection
of organic, hand-embroidered wedding
dresses.
Guests in attendance will be treated to
a proper celebration featuring libations
including Back Forty Beer Co., a signature
Jacky Rudy cocktail with Chattanooga
Whiskey and the food that inspired it all—
Jim ‘N Nicks Bar-B-Q, famous for low-
temperature, slow-cooked barbecue and
top-to-bottom, made-from-scratch cuisine.
Voted best-in-the-business by many,
homemade smoky goodness will be served
in the Motor Court between the two historic
brick buildings.
Additional celebratory events include an
Alabama Chanin Basics trunk show hosted
by Warehouse Row’s Amanda Pinson
Jewelry on Friday and Saturday, July 26
and 27 and a one-day sewing workshop on
Saturday, July 27, under the guidance of
Natalie Chanin herself.

After a series of tornados smashed Micah Whitson’s home state of Alabama, he and his wife Marianna began to craft letterpress posters as love
notes to their Southern roots. Their business, the Old Try, grew out of this work.
Mark your calendars Friday, August 30
for an evening dedicated to the vintage
art of print making with an exhibition,
opening reception and workshop featuring
the Old Try and Chattanooga’s The Open
Press.
The Old Try, a duo of nostalgic Southerners-
turned-Bostonians, will clothes-hang their
iconic, Dixie-themed work at Warehouse
Row in an exhibition that will aim to
“connect a person to home,” no matter
where home might be. Over the years,
the husband-and-wife team has cultivated
impressive collaborations with the likes
of Garden & Gun magazine and shops
like Bourbon & Boots. Specializing in
letterpress posters, Old Try creates hand
pressed prints using vintage machines
with moveable type and 100-year old wood
blocks.
The Open Press is a fledgling letterpress,
print making, and book arts co-op based in
Chattanooga. Sparked by a 2012 MakeWork
grant and the generosity of the University
of Tennessee at Chattanooga, founding
members Matt Greenwell and Paul Rustand
have worked together to assemble print
making and letterpress equipment from
private individuals and public institutions.
Reception attendees will enjoy local bites
and brew, and will have the opportunity
to participate in the printing process of a
limited-edition poster created by Old Try
exclusively for the event utilizing vintage
machinery provided by The Open Press.
For more information about these fine
Southern craftsmen, visit theoldtry.com
and theopenpress.org. Opening reception
is August 30th, with exhibition on display
through October 5th.

out & aboutMan-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends as VP of Creative & Marketing for Jamestown, owner of Warehouse Row.
a s summer settles in and my travel schedule heats up, I’m pleasantly
reminded of how a bit of warm weather brings out the best in many
American towns. With recent visits to creative communities such as
San Luis Obispo, CA, a place that has quite impressively been deemed
the happiest and friendliest city in the country, and Chattanooga, TN,
Outside Magazine’s Best Town Ever, and home to where I learned to
row, I’ve found energizing recreation at every turn.
Even big cities are going back to nature. Ponce City Market in Atlanta,
GA is creating organic rooftop gardens, outdoor amusements and
serving as a link to dynamic neighborhoods with the new BeltLine, a
network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit.
When I’m not feeling like a rugged, outdoor excursion this summer
(which, let’s face it, is often) I can only hope to be found in Charleston,
SC, drink in hand, poolside at the new premier swim and social center,
Mixson Bath & Racquet Club. What’s my next adventure? I just
signed up for sailing lessons to begin this fall on the Hudson River in
NYC, near my home office at Jamestown’s Chelsea Market. For more
information, visit JamestownLP.com.
