The Rougemont Review Issue 15: 26 January 2018 BEHIND THE CLASSROOM DOOR... Welcome to Upper Infants JOURNAL WRITING Year 1 have been pracsing talking about our weekend in full sentences to help us write about it in our journals. This week they have worked hard to create some super journal wring! When they had finished, they even pracsed some ‘peer assessment’ where they read their work with a partner and gave them some helpful feedback. MATHS Year 2 have been learning to add and subtract a single digit to a two digit number by using number bonds to build up strong mental strategies. We have found Numicon perfect for this as we can see what is happening when we add or subtract a number. Some partners then used the Numicon to explain and show how they found the answer. We have also started looking at using the ‘inverse’ to check our answers. Year 2 were enjoying using Numicon so much that they couldn’t believe it when the end of the lesson arrived so quickly! DEPUTY HEAD BOY AWARDED PLACE AT YOUTH ASSEMBLY UN CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK Congratulaons to Y13 pupil and Deputy Head Boy, Ed Jones, who has been successful in his applicaon to aend the Youth Assembly United Naons Conference in New York next month. Year 5 have also been embracing maths challenges this week as they approached their move from short mulplicaon on to long mulplicaon with curiosity and resilience. SENIOR STORIES

HOLOCAUST POEMS - YEAR 8As part of their English studies, Year 8 students were tasked with creati ng a poem inspired by some thought provoking images from the ti me. Here are a few of them. Well done Year 8, some fantasti c literacy skills being demonstrated.

The Power of Words This week, our theme of ‘Being Human’ began with a senior school assembly, led by Mr Jenkins and dedicated to Holocaust Memorial Day, a nati onal commemorati on day where we remember those who have suff ered under Nazi Persecuti on, and in subsequent genocides. As the senior school listened in respectf ul silence, we were left in no doubt how fortunate we are in our everyday lives. Huge thanks, as ever, to Mr Jenkins for tackling such a diffi cult subject so sensiti vely. In other news this week, the House Captains and House Tutors have begun their preparati ons for the highly contested Eisteddfod, and off -stage competi ti ons are also underway in diff erent subject areas. Watch this space as the performances are auditi oned and chosen over the next few weeks!

The Prep School Unite for Charity! Our intrepid School Councillors have been busy discussing which event we are going to host, as a Prep School, in order to raise money for the NSPCC, as we welcomed Mrs Phillips from the charity to share a very important message with our Infant children. ‘Speak out. Stay safe.’ is the slogan that children were encouraged to remember and we now look forward to our Juniors receiving the same

talk obviously in an age-appropriate manner, later this week. Looking ahead to next week, the children will be invited to take part in a ‘Buddy’s Big Workout’, donati ng money to this worthwhile charity.
