Meeting HighlightsPosted by Edwin Steinberg

Last week's meeting was called to order and opened with President Linda Singer introducing thehead table: Doug Oppenheimer and speaker Nichole Rider. Dave Anderson delivered the invocation and Oliver Ruiz led us in the Pledge. Ann de las Posas introduced our numerous visitors and guests, and President Linda participated inan exchange of banners with RC’s of Brazil and Woodstock, IL Marcia Brod offered congratulations to members with birthdays and Rotary anniversaries inFebruary. In a “Getting to Know You” talk, Charlotte Donn told us about her travels and time spent onmissionary tasks. Charlotte also reminded us that with the changing nature of the GSE program, many of the GSE participants will have similar opportunities. Diane Landsberg collected Happy Dollars from a long line of happy members, visitors and guests.

Diane told us about the “Rotary Restart” project to be held on February 18th. Doug Oppenheimer introduced speaker Nichole Rider, an active participant in many sports, whichwas temporarily interrupted by a tragic automobile accident in her early 20s. The resulting injury toher spinal cord required a long recovery period where she was able to regain partial mobility andresume sports activities. Nichole told us about her becoming an active participant in sports including recumbent cycling, kayaking, and her particular passion, sailing. Nichole introduced her friend Kerry Gruson, anotherrenowned sailor, who has not let her injuries interrupt her activities. Sailing, according to Nichole,is a great equalizer. Nichole is involved with Shake-A-Leg Miami, where she was introduced to sailing and, for the past2 years, was in the Winterfest Boat Parade.

placed 3rd in the 2011 Mobility Club event and was selected as Miss Congeniality.

Her experiences have led her to believe that “Our attitudes determine our altitude in life” As a motivational speaker, she encourages us to visit her web site www.cleverpig.org/nicholeriderto learn more. Following Nichole’s inspiring talk, Rick Miller conducted the 50/50 raffle. President Linda reminded us that next week’s speaker will be William “Shorty” Bryson, Fire Chief, whose topic will be “New Vision for Fire Service in Dade County” The meeting concluded with Robin Shelley leading us in a recital of the Four Way Test.
