Last week’s presentation was given by Khun Ratanawadee Hemniti, the wife of the Danish Ambassador to Thailand. During her speech, Khun Ratanawadee, who has a BA from Thammasat University and an MA in Education from Canada, described the duties of a diplomat’s wife, which have been especially busy as her husband is the doyen of the diplomatic circle in Bangkok, having served here for 6 years. She also spoke at length about her role as Thailand Chairperson of the AIP Foundation. The AIP Foundation was founded by Greig Craft in 1999, to raise awareness about the social, economic and human impact of the rising number of road crash injuries in developing countries, beginning with Vietnam. In the decade leading up to the establishment of AIP, the motorcycle emerged as a symbol of progress, mobility and freedom in the developing countries, but this brought with it a dramatic increase in road fatalities and injuries. Grieg Craft and his colleagues quickly identified the helmet as an affordable aid to help reduce the most severe, long-lasting effects of road traffic crashes, and in 2000, former USA President, Bill Clinton, launched “Helmets for Kids”, the AIP Foundation’s first school-based programme.

By RTN Roy HowardAs the availability of high-quality, affordable helmets was limited in Vietnam, the AIP Foundation began producing the world’s first ‘tropical’ motorcycle helmet in its non-profit Protec Factory in Hanoi. In 2001, Vietnam adopted a child-specific helmet standard and in 2007, a decree was issued in Vietnam making it mandatory for all motorcycle drivers and passengers to wear a helmet while

travelling on the Nation’s roads. Following the enactment of this decree, fatalities dropped by 12 percent and injuries, including traumatic brain damage, dropped by 24 percent. In 2012, the AIP Foundation was appointed as a member of Thailand’s National Road Safety sub-committee, and the following year AIP partnered with ‘Save the Children’ to establish a new child helmet wearing campaign. Thailand was an early adopter of motorcycle helmet laws, with the enactment of the Helmet Act in 1994 which applies to both drivers and passengers, however, only the drivers appear to be subject to strict enforcement of the law. Khun Ratanawadee reminded the audience that Thailand has the world’s second highest road fatality rate, which is estimated at 44 persons per 100,000. 74% of all road fatalities in Thailand involve motorcycles, and a recent survey revealed that only 44% of Thai motorcyclists regularly wear a helmet. Last year it is estimated that 26,000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents on Thailand’s roads. With an ever-increasing number of vehicles on the roads, things will probably get worse before they get better!

“SOUTH MOUTH”THREE OLD MEN

Three old men are about to play their regular match when the starter asks if they mind that a lady joins them to make up a four ball.

When they see the stunning beautiful 18 year old blonde they all agree that she would make a great 4th. Her standard of golf does not match her looks and after playing 17 bad holes

she gets to the 18th and has a 20 foot put for a par.

“I would do anything in the world to get a par” she tells the three men.

All three obviously have the same thing in mind. The first man says “hold your hands tight together and aim about 6 inches to right of the hole”

The second man says “No, no, aim just inside the left edge and hit it firm, make sure you do not leave it short”

The 3rd gentleman walks around the green surveying the hole from every angle and say’s “Ah, its a gimmie.”
