Rotaplast Mission to Oaxaca, Mexico

Meet Natalie, a Rotaplast patient from San Salvador. Our first mission to San Salvador in 2006 repaired herlip; our second mission to San Salvador in 2007 repaired her palate. On the last day of our mission in 2007,we held a clinic to check the surgeries. Natalie was a "no show." We were packing our boxes of equipment togo home when in the door walks Natalie's parents with Natalie. They had gotten up at 4:00 a.m. to walk tothe closest highway. They hitched a ride to the closest bus stop. They rode the bus into the city and finally at11:30 got to the hospital for her check up. Natalie has a chance to lead a normal life.

San Jose Rotary is sponsoring a Rotaplast mission to Oaxaca, Mexico inFebruary, 2010. We are looking for sponsors for the mission. We will be taking a team of 8 San Jose Rotarians to Oaxaca. Our surgical goal is 100 children and the cost of sponsoring a child for surgery is $650. You can help a child like Natalie bymaking a donation to San Jose Rotary Foundation for Rotaplast.

For more information call Kathy Wiley, 408-926-2500.

Summary of November 11th Meeting

The Rotary Club of San Jose held its weekly meeting at the San Jose's Rotary Summit Center, and we were personallygreeted by the Event Committee led ably by Shirley Lewis. The members at the greeting line wore a reasonable facsimileof a railroad "engineer's cap".

President Rod wearing a like hat apparently having permanently lost the train whistle called us to order with what seemedto be a duck call and then a kazoo.

President Rod welcomed guests and fellow Rotarians to the Club's 4768th meeting. In particular we warmly greetedmembers, past and present, of our military. All appropriately joined in singing God Bless America under the leadership andvoice of Ray Silva with the piano of Paul Tumason.

Our "Wisdom for the Day" was offered by Julie Frambach. The topic was appropriate as it came from a "Soldier's Prayer toher Mother." The prayer was both forceful and loving and its text was presented to Julie by her daughter who serves us inthe United States Army, Airborne.

Thereafter we had news and its counterbalance, humor, from John McLeod who Rod greeted with the refrain "Here'sJohnny!" John reported: DOW up; NASDAQ up; Presidential visit to Arlington; CSU entering classes to be smaller as aconsequence of the budget crunch; local flights soon to be offered once a week to Kona and Maui from SJC. By way ofhumor John noted that "memory" for older men meant we remembered the wife's birthday was---yesterday; and that"tools" represented objects that illustrated the laws of physics on one's own person.

President Rod announced the presence of very special guests from the United States military and requested Carl Honakerto introduce them. Among our guests were representatives from the Air Force reserve, recruiting staff; and retired militarypersonnel who work and support the efforts of our guest speaker. In keeping with Veteran's Day commemoration Rod,requested that they stand and then thanked all Rotarians who have served in our military.

Red Badger Jennifer Simmons and Sergeant at Arms Scott McQueen introduced themselves and served as holders of thetravelling microphones. Shirley Lewis made an announcement about the Annual Endowment Event set for March 6, 2010. The theme will berailroading; and the title "Ticket to Ride." The symbol features a bullet train piercing the Rotary Wheel.

Eric Heckman informed us of the Rotary After-Hours event to be held November 18th at the San Jose State Library, Room225, under the sponsorship of San Jose State's Department of International Studies, and its chair, our own Dr. Mark Novak.

Gay Crawford introduced our speaker for the day:

Captain Michael Gerold whose talk was entitled:

"The War We Are Losing At Home"

Captain Gerold served the nation for 13 years, first as a Non Commissioned Officer and later receiving his commission fromthe University of San Francisco, earning his MBA while recovering in the Wounded Warrior program. He was a SpecialOperations Officer and Afghanistan combat veteran. He graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne and Air Assault schools,JFK Special Warfare Center's Anti Terrorism Course, and nine other JFK Special Warfare Center courses.

He lives in San Francisco's Financial District where he founded American Legion Post 911 and built what is now referred to

by the National media and Legion Posts in seven nations as "the New Face of the American Legion." He now serves as theyoungest State Director of Membership of the American Legion in the United States and the first veteran of the current warto have ever served in this capacity.

He noted the particularly chilly receptions, if not worse, sometimes received by uniformed armed service personnel in SanFrancisco. The absence of civility and the failure to separate "the policy from the soldier" exacerbated the kinetic(physical/mobile) and non-kinetic issues of the warrior's re-entry into domestic society. While substantial progress hasbeen made in physical rehabilitation, the non-kinetic issues have not received as much attention and seem to be moredifficult to remediate. The issues confronting the returning warrior may raise significant concerns in economic matters(joblessness, bankruptcy, foreclosures); and exhibit themselves by substance abuse, criminal behavior and suicide.Accordingly the new face of the American Legion seeks to address these non-kinetic concerns as well as other mattersaffecting the veteran. These concerns involve in addition to medical help, educational and vocational efforts. It is here toothat the citizenry can and should offer a helping hand; ways to create, re-enforce and make permanent satisfactoryre-entry in the domestic world.

The speaker was informative, gracious, kind, and motivational. Rotarians seemed to understand and agree with hismessage. Paul Masquelier asked about job re-entry and noted his church's local hierarchy held in place the job of a pastoror other official roles when their occupants were called to service. The Captain noted the legal, and more important themoral requirements, for such treatment. Fernando Zazueta asked about the metal stress attendant to the warrior'stransition from the violence of war to ordered civil society. The speaker addressed the need to "re-tool" behavior; tore-ground it given the inordinate stress and unique behaviors generated by war. He noted such stresses were long-termedand not easily resolved. However, their recognition combined with effective communication and education can act toameliorate the negative consequences. Marie Bernard expressed true Rotary sentiment by offering the Legionnaires theassistance of her non-profit organization, Project HIRE

The success of the program was shown by both the standing ovation given Captain Gerold and the numerous Rotarians inline after it to giving their cards to him and offering their help.

End Polio Now

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. By donating now, youcan help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk. You cantrack progress on the internet at this link.

You can donate directly to Rotary International to help end polio now by Clicking On This Link. You can down load the End Polio Now bimonthly news letter by Clicking On This Link. This is a separate download.
