A Center for the ArtsTwo weeks ago, Larry introduced the club to Terry Lane whoserves as the Veterans Affairs Coordinator and Director if theClean Technology Partnership for Lewis and Clark CommunityCollegeIn the area of veterans' resources, Terry noted that there areover 250 veterans at LCCC. The college has established anew resource center for veterans and assists veterans inapplying for benefits and hosting fundraisers and otherveterans' activities.In the area of clean technology, LCCC is working with Ameranand other utilities to provide training for their workforce and toprepare a workforce that will be able to help in establishing ofsmart-grid technologies and new green technologies.LCCC continues to lead the way in providing educationalresources for our community.

-The program was presentedby Dr. Ed Ragsdale. His topicwas MRI-MagneticResonance Imaging. Brad P.is the program host for thenext program. It will bepresented by arepresentative of MedcoAmbulance Service. Theyprovide 911 service for theWood River Hospital.
-We celebrated Wendell'sbirthday last week.

Asfloodwaters receded,diseases such as choleraand dengue fever emerged.The Rotary clubs of Eltham,Australia, and Phnom Penh,Cambodia, coordinated thedistribution of Aquaboxes –tanks that can purify up to290 gallons of contaminatedwater – to families, medicalcenters, and schools.CanadaMalaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and illnesses causedby lack of sanitation havedevastated many villages inSouth Africa. In ruralHluvukani, the nonprofitKunavelela CommunityProject maintains acommunal garden to helpnourish residents affected bydisease. Last year, theRotary Club of BowenIsland, B.C., pledged toraise funds to purchase andinstall a windmill, watertanks, and a basic irrigationsystem to support thegarden. Bowen Island clubmembers, working with theRotary Club of Burnaby,B.C., raised more than US$12,000, and the village nowhas a reliable water supply.
EnglandDuring an event at StGeorge’s House, WindsorCastle, 2011-12 RIPresident Kalyan Banerjeespoke about the success ofthe fight against polio. Theoccasion was a charitydinner celebrating a full yearwithout a case of thedisease in India. Guestsincluded British HomeSecretary Theresa May andIan Macfadyen, constableand governor of WindsorCastle. BBC medicalcorrespondent FergusWalsh, who traveled to Indiain February for a series onthe polio eradicationcampaign, was the event’skeynote speaker.GuatemalaLake Izabal, at 228 squaremiles, is Guatemala’s largestlake and an important fishingarea. Fisheries biologists areworking with the Rotary Clubof Guatemala de la Ermitaand a Guatemala City diveshop called Pana Divers toimprove underwater habitatsby building artificial reefs. In2010, they sank 62 concreteballs to protect shallow-growing sea grasses and toshelter food fish such asVieja maculicauda andMojarra luminosa. ThisJune, they completed theproject by sinking 161additional balls about 130feet from shore, whichshould provide localfishermen with 1,500 tons offish annually. The clubraised US$10,000 for theeffort through a golftournament and barbecuecook-off.IndiaIndian Rotary clubs’ work toeradicate polio is highlightedin a new book by MurielSukumaran, a retiredmicrobiologist and wife ofPast District Governor P.Sukumaran. “I wantedeveryone to know Rotarywas involved in a big way,”she says.
