O MANY are searchingfor the supposedly mys-

terious key that solvesthe riddle of Cosmic attunement, or serves asa fundamental note bywhich we may set intovibration the musicalstrings on the Cosmic

harp and find our own keynote vi-brating in unison with them.

If there is any single key of a simplenature than can more quickly bringthis Cosmic attunement into our lifethan any other key or formula it isthe very simple attitude of cheerful-

ness. Just at this time of the year when

all of nature is preparing to expressits Cosmic attunement and coopera-tion with the laws of the universe bybursting forth from the long winternight of sleep into the sunbeams of Light, Life, and Love, it would befitting, indeed, for the seekers of Cos-mic attunement to get into harmonywith nature and respond and bendthemselves toward the rising sun andsalute it with a cheerfulness and liftup their heads in adoration to theCosmic consciousness and be cheerful.

First, we must cleanse out of ourconsciousness all thoughts of enmity,envy, hatred, and jealousy. We neednot go out of our way to turn theother cheek toward our enemies orthose who injure us, but we can atleast forget their unkindness and thinkof the universal love that is bestowedupon us and of the universal goodnessthat is made manifest to us in every

hour of our lives. We have neitherthe right nor the privilege of exercising

revenge or retaliation. The God of ourhearts has established a law of com-pensation and this is God’s law andmethod of adjusting the wrongs thatmay be done to His creatures. It isincumbent upon us to hold love andtoleration in our hearts toward allbeings and to allow no thought of hatred or enmity to express itself inour minds at any time.

No matter what our station in lifemay be or what our trials and prob-lems, there is always much which canmake us cheerful if we will seek for

it, and through this cheerful attitudeand the resulting Cosmic attunementwill come a change in our conditionsthat will relieve us of our sufferings andchange our place in life.

During the past month I received aletter from a young woman living inInglewood, California, accompanied bya photograph of herself sitting in awheelchair. She says in the letter thatshe has been a chronic invalid for anumber of years, but there has been amarked improvement in her generalcondition since she became a memberof our organization and that she isfollowing our principles daily. She re-grets that her crippled condition hasinterfered with the practice of all of the experiments outlined in the workbut she has had pleasing success withthe ones that she has been able toundertake. She further states that doc-tors long ago told her there wasnothing that they could do for her,but now her heart is so full of grate-

fulness because she knows that someday she will be able to send us anotherpicture in which she will be “walkingupon two straight limbs, well andstrong like a real Rosicrucian.’’

In the photograph her countenanceis beautiful and enhanced by a capti-vating smile that is unquestionably areflection of her soul and conscious-ness. Such an attitude of cheerfulnesswithin shown in the photograph andbreathed in the spirit of her letter isone of the surest indications in theworld that she is going to steadilyimprove under the spell of the Cosmicpower to which she has made herself receptive. How many would be cheer-ful under such conditions and in sucha position? How many would be freeof bitterness toward those who havebeen unable to help her with theirarts and sciences? How many wouldbe free of criticism of the cause of theconditions and have naught but cheer-fulness in their hearts as they thinkonly of the future and not of the pastor present?

Among the thousands of letters thathave come to us in the past six monthstelling us of trials and tribulationscaused by business depression or un-employment, we are able to pick out

those who are maintaining a cheerful,hopeful attitude, which is keeping themCosmically attuned and bringing themsome blessings in spite of the generaladverse conditions. On the other hand,there are those who express bitterness,disappointment, hopelessness and con-demnation for all of the conditions sur-rounding them and the causes whichthey have selected as being responsiblefor the general conditions. They accuse“big business,’’ the capitalists, the di-rectors of W all Street operations, thepresident of the United States, Con-gress, local industries, and politics, forall of their .troubles and do not realizethat in holding such an attitude of criticism, bordering on hatred, they arenot only wrongly accusing men who donot possess the power to control Cos-mic conditions, but they are keepingthemselves out of attunement with thehigher consciousness that would revealthe truth to them and at the same timeplace them in harmony with improving

conditions and benedictions which areclose at hand and which have alreadycome to those who are cheerful and of the right universal attitude. They aredeceiving themselves and are continu-

ing their own plight and circumstancesthrough their wrong attitude. The truecause of their present situation is.therefore, ,to be found within them-selves and not around them.

Arbitrarily assuming an attitude of cheerfulness without purging the innerconsciousness of the last vestige of criticism and enmity will not producea miracle in the lives of these persons.

 The Cosmic is not deceived by a fic-titious complacency, artificially stimu-lated to represent the true attitude of cheerfulness and Cosmic attunement. The mere temporary acceptance of con-ditions with a momentary prayer of thankfulness for what one has ac-complished, with a small degree of cheerful aspect, will not suddenly wipeaway the trials and tribulations inone’s life and bring a Cosmic beam of new life. The cheerful attitude mustcome as a result of understanding andthrough the complete elimination of allfalse beliefs and all wrong viewpoints.It must be gradually built up out of gratefulness and thankfulness for the

continued blessings of life, giving birthto the conviction that the world is con-trolled by a loving, merciful, and su-premely wise God whose ways maynot always be so easily analyzed bythe finite mind, but whose beneficentmotive in all things is unquestionablythe good that we are to receive andenjoy.

Such profound peace and cheerful-ness within the consciousness of anindividual places him in true Cosmicattunement and with the coming of thefirst change of conditions such per-sons vibrate in harmony with thechanges and are the first to receive thebenefits, while those who are out of harmony and out of attunement are thelast to be benefited, and then only be-cause so many around them have beenbenefited through Cosmic attunementthat they enjoy only the reflections of the blessings given to others.

forth on the stems and limbs of plantsand trees and come out of the hiddenchamber of darkness and material limi-tations into the great sunlight of Cos-mic understanding! Let this Spring-time be the time of rebirth of a new

life and new consciousness, bringingtrue Cosmic attunement and through

this, the enjoyment of all of the good

things that God has in store for eachone of us.

The Importance of Spiritual Values

MAN’S SUCCESS DEPENDS UPON SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

S I DEAL with thepersonal problems of many of our memberswhose confidences areentrusted to me, andas I watch the work-ing out of these prob-lems and the gradualsuccess  of the hopesand ambitions of our

members, I am impressed more andmore with the fact that to the samedegree as every man and woman comes

to have a true appreciation of thespiritual values in life will these per-sons attain greater happiness, prosper-ity and peace.

I do not want to take the negativeside of the argument and say that thosewho are rank biased materialists inlife are the least happy and the leastcontented even though they seem to bematerially successful. That would bestating only part of the truth andwould not be revealing the great lawswhich I see constantly demonstrated.

Speaking in behalf of North Amer-

ica, or especially of the United States,I cannot help but feel that we areliving in a country that really doesgive more appreciation to the spiritualvalues in life than we are credited withgiving to these things. I know that inmany foreign lands a very differentviewpoint is held of the Americanpeople or all of the people that comefrom the North American continent.

Our prosperity here and our advance-ment in many ways manifests itself to

foreign people only through the ex-penditure of money. When our tour-ists go abroad they show by theirclothing, by luggage, and by their ex-penditures that they have ample funds.Our enormous expenditures for costlypleasures such as automobiles and ra-dios impress people of foreign landswith the fact that the people of NorthAmerica do not hesitate to spend largesums of money and that we have waysand means of securing the money. Thishas created the false impression that

the people of North America, and es-pecially of the United States, aremoney mad, or at least dominated bythe spirit of money, and, therefore,probably totally lacking in higher cul-ture and the appreciation of spiritualvalues.

When we come to analyze the sit-uation, however, we find that the veryspirit of Americanism is essentially areligious spirit and that this is prob-ably responsible for the national prog-ress. I am thoroughly convinced byevidence that has passed through my

hands in recent years and which re-lates to the lives of thousands of in-dividuals that this spiritual conscious-ness on the part of American people ismore responsible for their individualand national prosperity than anythingelse.

Do you think that I am overexaggerating or misrepresenting conditionswhen I say that America has truly areligious spirit or a religious founda-tion? I can go back to the earliest rec-

ords and see that long before the Pil-grims came to America the early ex-plorers came accompanied by religioushosts, and the first foundations alongthe Pacific coast and in the east weremissions and places of worship. Then

when the great rush came to leaveEurope and populate America we findthe Pilgrims leaving Europe with theavowed purpose of seeking a landwhere they would have greater relig-ious freedom and greater opportunitiesto worship and express their religiousconvictions. It was a spiritual motivethat brought the Pilgrims to this con-tinent and not any reports of gold ormaterial things. We find that the veryfirst things these Pilgrims did uponreaching these shores was to hold asacred ceremony and express appre-

ciation for the opportunities that werebefore them for worship and religiousstudy and thanking God for the safe

 journey across the sea.All through the early colonization

period the appreciation of the spiritualvalues of life was highly emphasized andchurches of all kinds were among thefirst structures built. Our early continen-tal and colonization sessi ons of congressand governing bodies were opened andclosed with prayers and a trust inDivine providence to help this racegrow and develop in spiritual poweras well as material power. The firstSunday schools ever established any-where in the world to give children agreater opportunity to become familiarwith the spiritual life were establishedin America sixteen years before therewas any Sunday school establishedanywhere in Europe, and I am happy tosay that the Rosicrucians were the oneswho established these first AmericanSunday schools. When the great con-stitution of the United States waswritten, as well as the Declaration of Independence, emphasis was given tothe spiritual values of life and todayour entire country is united in a trueappreciation of the importance of spir-itual things. Our freedom of religiousthought and our tolerance of evenatheism is not an indication of thelack of religion but a further exempli-fication of the true spirit of Divinemercy and love.

Some say that modern statistics dis-prove this claim. It is pointed out byreliable figures that crime is becomingthe practice of our youth. These fig-ures show that whereas twenty ortwentyfive years ago the average

criminal was thirtyfive or forty yearsof age, today the average criminal inthe penitentiaries is around twenty ortwentyone years of age and a greatnumber are below that age. Thiswould make it appear that our youthand rising generations are less religiousthan our forbears. The figures alsoshow us that more than half of ourchildren today in the United States arewithout any religious training whatso-ever, either in Sunday school, or athome, or in public school, and thattherefore the next generation is bound

to be minus religious education. These figures, however, do not tell

the real situation. We must draw a linebetween church attendance and an ap-preciation of spiritual values. If weare going to say that only those whoare regular attendants at a church oraffiliated with some religious move-ments have any appreciation of spir-itual values then we will have to saythat a very large portion of our NorthAmerican people are nonreligious orat least have no appreciation of spir-

itual values. But that is not true. Thereare just as many persons outside of thechurch and outside of any religiousaffiliation who have a deep and pro-found appreciation of spiritual valuesas there are in the churches.

It is undoubtedly true that in theearly years of the foundation of thiscountry when the struggles for inde-pendence, freedom, and the blessingsof life were being fought for bitterlyand at great sacrifice, more thoughtwas given to prayer, to religious wor-ship, and to a petitioning to God for

help. We find in the history of theworld that whenever any nation of people is suffering or passing througha period of trial and tribulation it re-turns to a more sincere and active in-terest in religious matters and  looksmore to God for support and help andguidance than at any other time. Andit is also true whenever a nation in thepast history has attained what it hasbeen fighting for and praying for it

forgets, to a large extent, its religiousattitude and gives less attention tothe spiritual values of life. A nationenjoying prosperity, or peace, or theblessings for which it has long sought,is very apt to become obsessed with thematerial things which it has and to

forget about prayers and about seek-ing further support or guidance of aDivine nature. This is a common traitin human nature, unquestionably wrongbut nevertheless true.

In this regard I am reminded of astory that typifies this tendency onthe part of human nature. A littlechild alone in its crib one night,awakened and felt thirsty and beingunable to call his parents who couldnot hear his voice through the closeddoor, he decided to get up and get out

of the crib and go and get a drink. The little fellow struggled for a longtime trying to get over the high ironrailing on each side of the crib. Afterlong exertion he finally got on topof one of the railings and was afraidto drop down on the other side. Hesuddenly remembered some of h isprayers and began to pray. He said,“Please God, help me to get over thisfence to get a drink.” He repeatedthis three times and then suddenly fellto the floor. After he got over thefirst shock of the bump he looked up

toward the ceiling and said, “Nevermind, God, I did it myself.” This is what has occurred in our

great North Almerican continent. Formany years past we have been rushingmadly toward great prosperity, peace,and happiness and we have overlookedthe fact that some years ago we neededthe help of God and derived benefitthrough the spiritual values of life. Inour great enjoyment of extreme bless-ings we became independent, forget-ting our obligations to God, and tendedto leave religion and the church outof our lives. But even this did noteliminate our consciousness of a realappreciation of spiritual values. Thatappreciation remained ready to bequickened into a flame of enthusiasticand zealous religious fervor the mo-ment we believed this was necessary. Today we are in a situation where thethinking man and woman realizes that

he has neglected God and given toolittle attention to the spiritual valuesand is now about to look to these forthe help he knows he must have inorder to save himself from the veryconditions he created through neglectof them.

 The truly progressive and properlydeveloped mind in this Western Worldrealizes that after all is said and donethe spiritual things of life are the im-mortal things, the permanent things,and the things which give man thegreatest happiness, prosperity, content-ment, and peace. He is even beginningto realize that his very health is de-pendent upon spiritual attunement anda negation of dependence upon mater-ial things. It is in this very countrythat a great thinker analyzed and dis-

covered a fundamental spiritual truthand proclaimed it to the world. Thistruth was that the diseases and illhealth which had enslaved man forso many centuries were of the ma-terial part of man, the finite, transitory,temporal part, while the true spiritualself could not suffer, could not knowpain and could not be diseased.

 That great truth has spread through-out the world and is now a popularthought here in America. Even the mostadvanced Orientals, with all of theirstrange mysticisms and mystical beliefs

had not evolved to that point of un-derstanding where health and diseasewere given their proper values. Soeven in this great and fundamentalprinciple America took the lead. Andhundreds of other movements—asideentirely from the work of the Rosi-crucians—have made the people of the Western World realize that manis essentially a spiritual being and thatthe only part of him that can enjoythe real and permanent blessings of life is the part that is not materialor mortal.

 The man who appreciates the spir-itual values in life proceeds to developthese values in himself. He realizesthat the spiritual nature within him, if of any value to him, will become of greater value through greater attune-ment with the higher spiritual forces of the universe. By purely analyticalreasoning and without the light of ex-

perience, he is forced to come to theconclusion that if the spiritual thingsin life give him greater peace andhappiness he must seek greater andmore intimate contact with the God

consciousness and associate himself with the Divine principles of life inorder that he may have the utmost of spiritual blessings.

Once man begins the process of spiritual development he finds not onlyhis health improving but he finds agreater freedom from worry, anxiety,and the torments of earthly tribulation.He also finds a power developing with-in him that brings him greater master-ship in the control of his affairs andin the direction of the affairs aroundhim.

Again I say, to the same degree thatman interests himself in and becomescognizant of the spiritual values of life will he find himself being attunedwith the constructive, harmoniousforces of the universe. He will find hisefforts crowned with greater successif they are measured by spiritualstandards. These need not be dogmaticor doctrinal religious standards butpurely spiritual ones which rise aboveand transcend man’s attempt to limitthem by creeds or dogmas. He will

find his companionships changed andbecoming of more value to him. Hewill find his associations being led intoother channels of a more dependableand a more mutually helpful nature.He will find cooperation through thespirit of brotherhood more truly dem-onstrated in all of his affairs. He willfind his vision of life enlarged and ad-

 justed to a more truthful, peaceful, and

a more comprehensive understandingthan ever before. He will find hisintuition and his power to discernmore keen and more dependable. Hewill find his own spirit of control and

direction enlarged and made more po-tent. He will find himself above andbeyond the petty, the sordid, and un-pleasant things of life. He will findalso that the waves of material de-pressions and the earthly cycles of mortal influences pass beneath him oraround him and affect him in no way.

If we analyze those who have at-tained the greatest happiness in lifeor the greatest contentment and peace,and who are enjoying all the blessingsavailable, we find that these personsare those who give first consideration

to the spiritual values of everythingwith which they have to deal, includingtheir friendships and business asso-ciates and plans for work or industryand their contacts with mankind gen-erally. It behooves all of us, there-fore, to return once again to a greaterconsideration of the spiritual things of life and to quicken and bring to theouter consciousness the deep rooted ap-preciation of spiritual things which isour Western World heritage.

Again I say also that my experiences

with thousands of members and manyhundreds outside of our organizationprove that our spiritual valuations andour appreciation of the spiritual thingsin life will bring us the greatest degreeof success and will carry us throughthe most trying periods and circum-stances when nothing else of this ma-terial world, even its greatest symbolof gold, will do so.

;HE other day I had anopportunity to visit alarge city where I was

born and educated andfrom which I movedto another city fifteenyears ago. My firstthree years of medicalpractice were spent inthis former city and

upon my visit I made it my businessto call upon one friend who had beenof great help to me during those firstfew years of medical practice. Thisfriend operated a very large and suc-cessful drug store during the days Iwas living in his city and I was sur-

prised in calling on him recently to findthat his store had greatly enlarged andthat he was doing a very fine businessdespite the fact that his drug depart-ment was a very inconspicuous andsmall feature in the rear of the store.

As I stood there in the front partof the store and looked around at allof the counters with every conceivablekind of merchandise on display andsaw the very large and busy sodafountain and the many show casesfilled with beauty remedies, hair tonics,

perfumes, and other things having noreal connection with medicine or drugs,I asked my friend what was really re-sponsible for the great change thathad taken place in the drug storebusiness.

He also frankly admitted that he mademore profit in one week out of thebeauty preparations and perfumes than

he made out of his prescription workin a month.“People nowadays are spending more

money on making themselves keep welland look well than they are spendingon trying to cure disease,” he said.

I agreed with him for I had foundin my own practice in recent years thatI was called in to more homes for thepurpose of diagnosing a condition andrelieving the people of any worry as towhat was the cause of their illness thanI was for actually treating the condi-tion. Reviewing with this friend of 

mine, later on in the evening, thegeneral trend of my medical practiceand the trend of every modern anduptodate physician, I discovered thatafter all my business was not so muchthat of curing disease as preventingdisease. Even in the cases where I amconsulted at my office or called to thehomes of persons who are ill I findthat in most cases I have diagnosed theconditions and told them honestly whatwas wrong they have thanked me, paidme and required my services no further.

Now this is not an indication that mydiagnosis was one which they did notlike or did not agree with or that myservices were unappreciated and thatI am dismissed for incompetency, for Ifind that my business is increasingamong persons who have come to memany times for a diagnosis or a fewsuggestions and have not asked fortreatments but have sent for me againand again merely to learn what iswrong. In fact, most of my patients

are so pleased with what I tell themthat they not only make me theirregular family physician but constitutereal boosters throughout the com-munity.

What is it, then, that I am doingfor them that makes them place theirconfidence in me and feel that I amtruly serving them? In discussing thiswith my friend we came to the follow-ing conclusion. First of all, I amperfectly honest and frank with everypatient and I do not exaggerate aslight cold into a frightful possibilityof pneumonia or something else, and Ido not interpret the symptoms of amild case of indigestion as a sure signof complicated conditions which willrequire long treatment and much medi-

cine, and I do not urge operations forevery slight complicated internal condi-tion that can be straightened outotherwise, and I do not suggest medi-cine of any kind or even my profes-sional attendance when the cause of the trouble and the conditions plainlyindicate that a little rest, a little changein diet, and a few natural remedies willassist Nature in making a completecure.

My friend argued with me, andfinally convinced me, that there waseven more back of my services thanwhat I had realized. He called myattention to the fact that my franknessand my general attitude probablyencouraged my patients in believingthat not only Nature’s regular processbut the mind of the patient wouldeventually bring about a cure. Thiscaused me to realize that during thepast six or seven years, as a memberof the Rosicrucian Order and a deepstudent of its teachings and principles,I had become convinced through manyexperiments and many, many demon-

strations that the mind in man has avery considerable control over theactual physiological conditions in thebody. This conviction on my part wasundoubtedly being conveyed to themind of my patients by the things Isaid to them and the simple recommen-dations I made.

My druggist friend called my atten-tion to the fact that my patients werenot the only persons in the countrywho were using less medicine and lessdrugs each year, for in his neighborhood

and in the neighborhood of every drugstore or chemist shop the same condi-tions could be found. The first greatchange that took place in the drugbusiness was the elimination of themany patent medicines or “curealls”that were once very popular in Ameri-ca. Today not 2% of these things arecalled for as they were fifteen ortwenty years ago. We may say thatpublic education, pure food laws, andthe prohibiting of the sale of many of these remedies has caused people tolose faith in them, but faith is not lostin old standard customs and habitsuntil there is some demonstration orsome manifestation in our lives whichprove that the new aids or newmethods are better. In other words,

public education and public lecturesagainst the use of remedies would nothave gradually eliminated them fromour lives if we had not also found byactual experience that we could getalong without them and that therewere other ways and means of helpingourselves when in physical distress.

My friend also pointed out to me thatthe next great change was the gradualelimination of the use of prescribedmedicine. Every physician graduallycut down the number of prescriptions

and finally patients no longer expectedmedicine and were surprised when itwas prescribed except in very seriousor complicated conditions. Here wecame to the conclusion that a numberof principles were involved. First theteachings, lectures, and writings of thevarious New Thought, metaphysical,Naturopathic, and Christian Sciencemovements were responsible for teach-ing men and women that absolute faithcould not be placed in medicine where-as the mind in man could be reliedupon to assist Nature in making curesin almost every case.

Secondly, physicians learned thatthey could not continue to have theconfidence of their patients and meetthe changing consciousness of thepublic unless they too changed theirattitude and agreed with the beliefsand convictions of the public. I re-membered well my own gradual changein this regard ten or more years agowhen I began asking my patientswhether they had faith in medicine and

wanted any. Those that still had faithin it were given some and those whosaid they wanted none were told howto help themselves through dieting andnatural methods. Gradually, however,I learned not to even ask the question

but to take it for granted that theaverage man and woman and certainyoung persons of the new generation,did not want any medicine if it couldbe avoided. Today I think that I writea prescription perhaps for only one ortwo out of every one hundred patientsand then few of the old drastic reme-dies are prescribed.

 This shows that a very remarkablechange has taken place in the con-sciousness of the people of the westernworld for I understand that in many

of the foreign lands medicine is stillfreely used and remedies are freelypurchased for every conceivable ail-ment as curealls. I do not know howtrue this foreign condition may be asstated but I can speak for conditionshere in America.

Now what is it that the people of the present generation have discovered?It cannot be that they have merely lostfaith in medicine for that would beonly half of the change that has takenplace. Losing faith in one thing meansthat you have placed your faith ortransferred your faith to somethingelse. It may be true that we do nothave as much illness as we had manyyears ago although I believe that acareful analysis would show that thereare just as many persons having justas many strange symptoms at times asheretofore, but they do not become sofrightened and do not call these symp-toms an indication of real illness anddo not rush to a physician or druggistas readily for some help as they usedto do. The great truth of the matter

is that not only has the Americanpublic and the intellectually thinkingpeople of all parts of the world lostfaith in medicine, but they have trans-ferred their faith to the divine mindand constructive forces that reside intheir own beings.

It used to be argued that the mindcould not have any real control overmatter whether that matter was livingor dead. It was finally argued, bythose who contended against the rising

power of the new movements, thatmind might affect mental conditions inour body but could not affect thephysical conditions of the physicalparts of our body. I soon learned thefallacy of this claim and I must pre-

sume that millions of others havelearned how untrue this is. In aclinical demonstration of the power of suggestion while in a sleep state I haveseen a water blister formed on the armof a man or woman in fifteen ortwenty minutes solely through the useof suggestion which intimated that acold lead pencil was a red hot iron burn-ing the flesh. Now it may be claimedthat while in certain mental stages a sug-gestion will be taken at its face valueso far as the mind of the person isconcerned and that we may confusethe mind by placing a cold pencilagainst the flesh and suggest that theextreme difference of temperature isdue to heat instead of cold and thatfor a few moments the mind of theperson may mistake coldness for heat,but the fact remains that after thepencil is removed and without anyfurther suggestion, the flesh itself inall of its physical consciousness showsthat it too has been affected by thesuggestion and is proceeding to pro-duce a red condition of the flesh where

the pencil had been held and graduallymanifests a water blister. I have seenother clinical demonstrations where theflow of blood from an open wound hasbeen controlled by suggestion and evenby the mental attitude of the patienthimself. I have seen the pulse beatcontrolled at will through the mentalinfluence of the mind upon the body sothat the pulse increased or decreasedas desired. I have seen many otherdemonstrations that absolutely convinceme and would convince any sane andrational person that the mind in ourbodies can have and does have at alltimes a direct influence and controlover various physiological conditionsand functionings.

Now if this is true it should be avery simple thing to use the mind tocorrect a wrong condition because awrong or abnormal condition is abhor-rent to Nature and is inconsistent withthe creative processes going on withinthe body and is contrary to the har

monious principles of the universe. Inother words, it should be easi er to  remove a blister from the finger or armthan it would be to create one throughthe use of mental power or mind.Creating a blister in such a fictitiousmanner is to work against the normalfunctionings of the body and to bringan abnormal condition where it is notnecessary. This must be more difficultthan the process of correcting orremedying something that is wrong.Why then should not a condition of indigestion, for instance, be easily andquickly controlled and remedied by themind? All of N ature’s processes wouldcooperate for every part of the con-sciousness of the body woul d beagainst such a condition continuing and

every part of the consciousness wouldrejoice in cooperating to correct thecondition.

Examining the common ails of thehuman race and analyzing them in atruthful and natural method we findthat after all most of them are simplefunctional errors or conditions of atemporary nature which may causeextreme or slight inconvenience anddistress but are not necessarily prelim-inary to more complicated conditions.

 This being true these simple conditions

in their early stages can be easily andefficiently r emo ved or correctedthrough the use of mind.

Every physician knows that his firstmethod of procedure, when there seemsto be some unknown or incompletelymanifest condition present that by clear-ing the system through the use of a goodphysic will generally bring about im-mediate relief. In the olden days of prescribed medicine it was a commonpractice to prescribe and give a numberof remedies but to be sure and give agood physic hidden somewhere amongthe elements of one of the remedies.I think I am safe in saying that 75%of the cases were started on the roadto immediate cure and relief throughthis one factor alone and I know I amright in saying that constipation orsubnormal functioning of the bowels isresponsible for almost 75% of the con-ditions that manifest in the averagecase. Here we have a condition thatis easily affected by the mind for it isa fact that the functioning of the

bowels is dependent upon the operationof  certain nerve plexes and nerve im-pulses which are easily controlled bythe mind.

I do not want to take the space totouch upon the many common ailments

of humanity and point out their rela-tionship to the nerves and mentalfaculties of man’s being for no suf-ficient good would be served in thisway to warrant the use of so muchspace. The less a patient attempts todiagnose his condition and the morehe looks upon all physical conditionsas simple abnormalities and uses themind merely to correct whatever iswrong regardless of its nature and giveNature a chance through rest and dietto perform her regular work then

quicker will relief come to those whoare ill.It is an excellent practice to have a

physician diagnose the condition whenit becomes complex or lasts more thana day, to make sure that there is nounusual condition present and to havewhatever helpful advice he can give. To attempt to do all that is necessary,even with the mind, without some goodadvice from a competent practitionerof some kind is not recommended byany practitioner of any school. Thepractitioner or physician may not diag-

nose in the usual way but he will atleast be able to give proper advice andhelp to relieve your mind of worryand concern and point out to you thefact that man is essentially divine mindand that this is an omnipotent powerwithin the being of all that cansupersede, dominate, and master everytemporary condition of the flesh.

Generally in all physical ailments ortemporary disorders Nature requiresthat the body be given rest and main-tained in the proper degree of tempera-

ture and that the diet be changed.Perhaps the very best change in thediet for all conditions is to immediatelyfast. Fasting for two or three daysduring and after a physical trouble of any kind is sure to give the system agood cleaning and to allow Nature tocorrect many conditions. Fasting can-not injure anyone except they begreatly undernourished and in need of immediate strength. Rest and sleepgive all of Nature’s processes, including

Psychic DevelopmentITS RELATION TO MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

ERH APS in no othercountry in the world or

among no other nationof people is there somuch misconception re-garding psychic devel-opment as we find inNorth America. I judgethat in England and its

dominions the misconception is not asgreat as among English speakingpeople on this side of the world be-cause the attitude taken in the meta-physical and psychic journals of GreatBritain conforms more or less with thecorrect understanding of the Orientalsin this regard.

We are accustomed in this new land  to doing things very rapidly and totaking short cuts to achieve all endsand to look upon time as a rapidlypassing element in our life, and, there-fore, we abbreviate all effort and es-pecially all study and expect the Cos-mic laws and principles to cooperatewith us and make exceptions in con-sideration of our conservation of time.Fortunes are made rapidly in this newworld, businesses come into existence

and pass out in a very short duration,homes are rapidly built and rapidlytorn down, streets and boulevardsfamiliar to our parents and grand-parents have long since changed theirnames or forms, prominent persons inevery community are known for ashort period and quickly pass out of our memory, and we think and move ina rapid whirligig of motion that allowslittle consideration for future per-manency or for stability in anything.

We are quite accustomed to hearingthat the young man who a few days

ago was playing with the young menof our neighborhood as a high schoolyouth is now successfully conductingcases of law in the court and beforewe know it we will be informed thathe has retired from law practice and issettling down to a retired life of easeor grave concern. Young men whowere just about to graduate from highschool the day before yesterday, seem-ingly, are now owners of successfulstores and have achieved their evperience and knowledge as though ina dream over night.

It is not surprising, therefore, thatwe hear of advertised psychi cs, “med-iums,” fortune tellers, and mystics whoknew nothing of their subjects a fewdays ago, but through mastering abrief correspondence course of twentylessons, easily read in a few eveningsor through attending a special class of seven lectures, are now capable of in-stantly attuning with the Cosmic orwith certain unknown psychic forcesand delving into the past, present, andfuture with high efficiency, making it

possible for them to tell anything andeverything we wish to know. The time element does not seem to

enter into such processes of psychicdevelopment as brought about theirhigh attainment, and multitudes areconvinced that there is some short roador quick method of awakening the socalled “solar plexus” or other mys-terious psychic centers which turn anuntrained and undeveloped person intoa highly developed mystic in a few

weeks or a few months. As I have in-timated above, such a common belief in magical development of the innerconsciousness or inner abilities does notexist in any other part of the world butamong the English speaking people,

principally on the west side of theAtlantic.What is even more puzzling is the

attitude on the part of many sincereand honest seekers for psychic or spir-itual development. After contacting asafe and reliable guide for their studiesand development, they still look uponthe element of time as something to beovercome and are restless, indeed, be-cause their progress or development isnot extremely rapid or almost instan-taneous.

I wonder how many of these per-sons ever give thought to the subjectin a rational way and arrive at theconclusion that psychic developmentor spiritual development must proceednot from mental comprehension, butfrom inner illumination and that theentire process is one of Cosmic con-trol and direction? The most that anyorganization, acting as a school, or anyindividual acting as a teacher, can do,is to point the way. The Path can beclearly shown to those who seek itand the experiences of thousands who

have gone along the Path can be out-lined and presented as a helpful guide,but the actual journey must be made,not in a material sense, but in a purelyCosmic sense and in this regard, noguide, no organization, no teacher, caneither shorten, lengthen, nor controlthe time element.

Within recent years there have beenpublished a series of books for touristswith titles such as “Seeing Rome InOne Day," or “Seeing Paris In OneDay," or "Seeing London In OneDay." So far as any benefit derivedfrom attempting to use these books inseeing these cities in one day is con-cerned, the tourist would do well tostay at home in America and just readthe book and visualize the things de-scribed. Common sense will convincethe rational reader that the author of the book spent weeks in gathering theinformation he has condensed in thebook and which he outlines as possibleof seeing and understanding in oneday.

 The time element that enters intomoving the mind through a city rap-idly and pointing out various placeswith brief descriptions is not the timeelement that is consumed in moving aphysical body through heavy traffic in

order to cover the same ground. Oneof the safest guide books for Europeantourists is that published by Baedecker. But Baedecker does not at-tempt to control or consider the timeelement. He points out the paths thatone may take and from the experienceof himself and hundreds of other tour-ists he gives the benefit of their ex-periences and a guide of what maybe seen.

It is up to the tourist, however, to journey along the path and to accept

the conditions of travel and to submitto the time element as it manifestsitself in his individual case. No twotourists starting out with such a guidebook, intending to journey along oneof the described paths or routes fromParis to Bordeaux, would make the

 journey in the same time, so far asdays and hours are concerned, and notwo individuals would have the sameexperiences, realizations, and ultimatebenefits. The guide book, however,would serve to prevent unnecessarydelays and prevent missing importantpoints along the way. In order, how-ever, that each tourist should derivethe utmost benefit from his journey inaccordance with the urges and desireswhich prompted him to take it, eachtourist would have to give to each partof the path, to each hour of the jour-ney, such time as would allow the in-ner self and consciousness or the men-tal understanding to respond and re-act. As I have said, this is a matterthat is distinctly different in each in-dividual.

 Therefore, we see that the very bestteacher, the very best guides willingto direct our footsteps along the Pathto psychic realization and unfoldment,can only point out the way and give usthe benefit of the experiences of othersand then watch us work out our ownprogress in accordance with the timeelement as the Cosmic directs it. Thatsome will reach the goal of their reali-zation sooner than others is inevitablefor two reasons.

First of all, the goal of one indi-vidual may be further away than thegoal of another and the incidentsalong the way may require in one caseor attract in another case, more time,consideration, and realization, than in

the case of others. Secondly, the stateof development or unfoldment of thebeginner on the Path is different inalmost every individual case and thedegree of unfoldment necessary at eachstage of the journey is considerablydifferent in each case. These two fac-tors, therefore, would be a determiningconsideration in judging the amount of time necessary to attain the desired ornecessary unfoldment and the ultimaterealization.

 There is only this very distinctive

and important difference between thetourist who starts on a long or short journey in foreign lands and the be-ginner who starts out on the Path of revelation and unfoldment. The tour-ist is never anxious to reach the endof his journey unless he is limited byworldly affairs and must return to hishome city at a given time. Even then,while he recognizes the necessity forhurrying, he is never really anxious toreach the ultimate end of the journey.He hopes that each day will be a monthlong and each hour as long as a day,and he hopes, also, that from sunriseto sunset some miracle will occur andlengthen the period beyond all reasonthat he may proceed slowly and enjoyto the fullest, every minute of his travel.

 The seeker on the Path for unfold-ment, however, becomes overanxiousat the very start, to reach the ultimateend of his journey and to make eachhour as short as possible. While thetourist stays up as late as there areany lights burning in the city he hap-pens to be in and dreads going to

sleep for fear he will miss something,and rises at the earliest hour possibleto see anything, the student on thePath of psychic development and un-foldment wishes he could go to sleepand sleep for a year and wake up andfind himself fully developed and readyto manifest all of the Cosmic powerswithin him.

In fact, I exaggerate the length of time he would be willing to sleep, forhe would like to sleep not over a week

and have the ultimate results perfectlymanifested. He dreads every one of thelittle experiences and thrills of the pro-cess along the way, whereas the touristdelights in every little incident andmakes a record of them, photographs

them, and tries to remember them andrelate afterwards as the greatest thrillsof his life. The tourist realizes thatthe real attractiveness of the entire journey are the incidents on the waywhich will be the stones or structuresof the temple of knowledge and wis-dom which will be his possession at theultimate end of the journey. How pre-cious each of those stones are to thetourist on land. To many of theseekers for psychic illumination, how-ever, the little experiences of each dayand each hour are not looked upon asprecious jewels that will shine withsplendent glory in his ultimate crown,but as balls attached with chains to hisankles which seem to make his journeyslow and uninteresting.

And what basis is there in historyor in any of the sacred writings orspiritual revelations of the past forthis peculiar idea that psychic devel-opment can be attained rapidly orthrough any short cut? Let us turnback the pages of history and experi-ence and of divine revelation to the

greatest and most perfect instance inall human knowledge. This illustrationis the life of the great Master Jesus.

 The statements of all the Christianchurches based upon selected passagesof the Holy Bible are presented to usto convince us that Jesus was foreor-dained and predestined even beforeHe was conceived in the womb of His mother to become the greatest of all masters of divine and human wis-dom. His mother knew this and thethree Magi who came to His birth-

place reminded her again that here wasa child who was to become a SupremeMaster.

His attainment of such mastershipwas not the result of an afterthoughtlater in life nor the result of a con-clusion that He came to after Hisboyhood days had passed, nor was itsomething that He sought for in abrief time and received from the Cos-mic as an instantaneous benedictionand blessing. Whether we accept the

Oriental records and reports as givenin the book “The Mystical Life of  Jesus," which constitutes one of thevolumes of our Rosicrucian Library,or whether we accept the orthodoxChristian, though brief historical out-

line of His life, the fact remains that Jesus was a profound student of re-ligion and spiritual wisdom and de-voted His life to His development ateven an early age.

In His twelfth or thirteenth year,He already manifested great wisdomand knowledge to the learned men of the synagogue and His answers toHis mother in His youth regardingHis tarrying at the synagogue indi-cated that He was spending His timeand all of His thought in devotion to

God’s work and the development of His spiritual powers. However, eventhough this shows that He had begunHis studies and development at a veryearly age, all of the Christian recordsand all of the Oriental records showthat He did not manifest any degreeof supreme spiritual power or any de-gree of psychic unfoldment until Hisbaptism when the final stage of theprocesses made their sublime manifes-tation with the coming of the HolyGhost into His being.

 Think of the years that He gave toHis development and preparation andunfoldment, despite the fact that Hewas preordained to have this develop-ment and had every advantage, evenbeginning with the word issuing forthfrom Heaven which became incarnatein His flesh at the time of His con-ception. If the greatest of the decreedand predestined masters required timeand study for development, why shouldany of us, born with less preparationand Cosmic decree, expect to attainany unfoldment in less time?

And may it be noted that all of therecords, both Christian and Oriental,agree in the fact that after Jesus hadbeen mentally prepared through studyand keen analysis after long contem-plation. He was beset by the Cosmiclaws of temptation in order to furtherstrengthen and fortify His determina-tion and make Him still worthy andmore prepared for the last degree of His unfoldment. He did not give upduring these temptations and allow

himself to be convinced that He wasprogressing too slowly, or that thesystem He was following was notrapid enough, or that His instructoror teachers were holding Him backfor some ulterior motive, or that the

effort was not worth while; for if thesebeliefs had entered His mind or hadever affected His attitude, He wouldnever have attained the ultimate aimof His life.

Even His disciples, who were care-fully selected because of their spiritualinsight and deep and profound sincerityand unquestioned loyalty and determi-nation and above all their quick re-action to spiritual values, followed Jesus through all of His spiritual min-istry, studied under Him for a number

of years, and had the benefit of themost marvelous experience and demon-strations before they became evolvedor reached the point of unfoldmentwhere they were able to manifest anydegree of true psychic development.

Not even during the lifetime of Jesuswhile He was still with them and ableto answer all of their questions andgave them every possible benefit of personal guidance and experience, didthey receive any manifestation of theirown developing power and unfoldmentexcept as indications that somethingwas going on within them and whichthey probably did not understand. Itwas not until the Crucifixion and theretirement from their association didthe disciples of Jesus receive the HolyGhost and through it the power whichhad been developing and for which theyhad been preparing.

It is evident, therefore, that some-thing more than mere study, somethingmore than the mere mental intellector mere comprehension of laws andprinciples, and something more thanright living and right thinking is neces-sary to complete the process of spir-itual unfoldment and psychic develop-ment. While the mind and brain arebeing rounded out in the fullness of true comprehension and while the in-tellect is being developed that it maysee all things in their true values andcomprehend God’s laws in their trueCosmic relationships, something morethan all of this must take place withinthe divine consciousness of man to

prepare him and unfold him for theincoming of the Holy Spirit  and thedivine power that will represent theultimate unfoldment.

Personal contact with the greatteachers has no advantage over the

study of the profound laws withouta teacher. The disciples of Jesus weremore intimately associated with Himthan those great saints of divine andspiritual who were born after Him,studied after He ceased to be on earth,and attained great power without everhaving known Jesus personally. Yetthis intimacy, this contact with mar-velous miracles, this reception of per-sonal instruction and demonstrationdid not shorten or quicken their periodof unfoldment and development oneiota.

All sacred and mystical literaturedistinctly states what Jesus intimatedto His disciples and to the multitudesthat spiritual development and unfold-ment is individualistic and no man cansee God for another and no man cangive another the spiritual light thatmust grow within him. The studentson the Path, the adepts, the highlydeveloped in mysticism must journeyalone and very often the benefits of silent study and especially unasso-ciated with contacts with others of like

mind is the greatest advantage that  any true seeker can have. History isreplete with the records of marvelousattainments in a spiritual and psychicsense made by those men and womenliving as anchorites on mountain topsor valleys or shut away from theworld where they could spend theirsymbolical forty days and forty nightsor forty years in preparation, study,contemplation, and unfoldment.

 The advantage of a school or a sys-tem is admitted by all of the great

masters. Jesus urged them to come to-gether occasionally in His name. Thiswas the foundation for His church,for His entire institution and systemof guidance, but you will note thatthe entire system advocated by Himand every other great master was notfor the purpose of cutting short thetime and not for the purpose of ex-amining the development of one an-other in order that they might progressmore rapidly, but merely for the pur-

pose of guidance and the receiving of instruction based upon comparative ex-periences.

 This is the sort of guidance and in-struction that the Rosicrucian Brother-hood holds out to all individuals. It

is not a school of dogmatic philosophyor sectarian religion, but a school of comparative human experiences and of manifest wisdom revealed to multitudesand found to be true and eternallytrue. The Brotherhood acts as a com-panion, guide, as a leader, as a teacher,but not as a substitute for any in-dividual's development. It cannot sup-plant what must take place within eachbeing, but can simply supplement theindividual experience with the experi-ences of multitudes and through thestudy of these experiences reveal agreater and better understanding andcomprehension of such experiences.

 There is a very potent, though subtlepower that manifests itself throughspiritual association. Jesus said thatwhere many or any were gatheredtogether in His name, in the name of the Christ consciousness, there He, theChrist, would be. Where any aregathered together in attunement withGod, there God is most likely andmost efficiently manifested. Wherehundreds or thousands are associated

in mutual bonds of sympathy and un-derstanding, in ties of fellowship andcooperation, in mutual help, in theirstudies and experiences, there is apower present that is of direct benefitto each one.

Much is said at times of the univer-sal mind, meaning the mind of all be-ings focused in sympathy upon certainprinciples with universal agreement.We speak in mundane matters of pub-lic opinion and the power it has inworldly affairs. The only difference

between the universal mind and publicopinion is in the degree of the spirit-ual nature of the thoughts held in themind of all beings and the relationshipof these thoughts to universal things.If public opinion in any community orany city or nation representing theidentical thoughts and agreements of the mass consciousness, is a power inworldly things to such an extent thatit moves men in high positions to ac-

cede to it and recognize it and evenaffects the decisions of kings and em-perors, think how potent must be thespiritual power of the universal mindwhen it is composed of spiritualthoughts held in the minds of thou-sands of beings associated in spiritualcompanionship devoted to one noblespiritual ideal.

 The Rosicrucian Brotherhood has asits objective many spiritual, as wellas practical ideals, and even the prac-tical ones are those which are abovethe commonplace things of life. Backof the whole scheme of the worldlylife of each individual in the organi-zation is the sublime desire born andinspired in man through Cosmic urge,to achieve unfoldment or psychic de-

velopment leading to true mastershipof the individual. Since this is theultimate and unquestioned aim of eachwho enters the organization, it be-comes the dominating thought and thecontrolling factor in the thinking andliving of each individual member. Allof their affairs, like all of their read-ing and all of their understanding,centers around the attainment of thisone noble and ultimate aim. This initself focalizes a wonderful powerwhich each in the association senses

and finds efficiently manifested in timesof attunement. This is the great pur-pose of the organization, aside fromits guidance and instruction, and it issuch association with the resultingpowers of a spiritual nature that isoffered to all of the seekers for psychicdevelopment and spiritual unfoldment.

Realizing, therefore, that while cer-

tain mental and intellectual progressmust be made in the comprehension of laws and principles, a certain processof spiritual unfoldment from withinmust take place, the time element be-comes secondary, if of any considera-tion at all. Each day, each hour, bringsthrough the studies an intellectualcomprehension of universal principles,another degree of mastership in apurely mental sense, while there is alsoan accompanying degree of spiritualunfoldment. Each degree of such in-tellectual comprehension and advance-ment and each degree of unfoldmentbrings its thrills of experience, itspower of mastership and its convictionof the evolving truths that are grad-ually forming the character of the

inner self. These daily and weekly experiences

are the jewels that will form the beautyof the eventual crown and are like thestones that form the structure of theultimate experience of the one who journeys through foreign lands. Eachof and by itself may be minute andinconsequential in the great scheme of things, but the attainment of each oneis a blessing and a benediction and arich reward for the day and the ac-cumulated mass of these things con-

stitutes the building of a new indi-vidual which, when once completedand ready to manifest as new spir-itual and regenerated being, makes theimage of God in which we were alldesigned, but to which sublime statewe must attain qradually and care-fully.

Retiring, therefore, to one’s room andgoing to bed when ill is not a sub-mission to the dictates of the flesh norsubmission to the fear of our minds.It is simply obeying Nature’s law.Having someone come and diagnoseour condition and tell us what to do islikewise not an indication of submissionto the dominance of the physical self.What is needed is a rational under-

standing of these principles and arational system of practice.

NE of the great dreamsof the early alchem-ists and mystics wasthe discovery of theElixir of Life, theFountain of Youthand the principle of regeneration. T hesethings, not as separatemarvels but as associ-

ated manifestations of Cosmic powerwere sought for diligently not only inthe fields of chemistry, biology, ontolo-gy but in the spiritual or Cosmic world.If we read hundreds of books thatwere published in the Middle Ages by

these mystics we might become impres-sed with the idea that all that theancient mystics and especially theRosicrucians sought for was the secretof transmuting base metals into goldand the secret of transmuting theirpresent lives into a new life with newerpower, faculties, and abilities.

 Today the search is the same butthe thoughts associated with the searchare expressed differently. The averageman and woman seeking the aid of the

Rosicrucian Order today is anxious tostart life over and to begin anew inthe struggle with the everydayobstacles to reach the desired heightsand the ultimate goal of our ambitions.We have given new names to ourdesires and new terms to the processesused but our dreams are identical. Wecome to a point in our lives when werealize that we have either been acomplete failure or that we are farfrom being successful and must eitherretrace our steps on the path we aretreading and start out on a new pathor suddenly change our way of makingprogress and make each step more

productive.In dealing with this matter for overtwentyfive years I have found thatthe average seeker for help and guid-ance in reaching a higher goal in lifehas come to the conclusion that noth-ing short of a new start or a newbeginning will suffice. Even thoughthis conclusion is more or less definitein the mind of these seekers for a newpath, the method whereby such achange may come into their lives is a

very vague conception indeed. In fact,the average seeker gives little thoughtto what must be actually done in orderto make this new start in life but holdsbefore him the one conviction that a

new start must be made.It is perfectly true that the Rosi-crucians have held forth for manycenturies that through their teachingsand through their practices and experi-ences, through thei r guidance, thesincere seeker can find regenerationand a new start in life. This positiveclaim on the part of the Rosicruciansand the very evident fulfillment of thatclaim in the lives of so many thousandsof persons in past history who havevoluntarily paid tribute to the Rosi-

crucian work, has brought thousandsof persons to the threshold of theorganization seeking this mysteriousregeneration in all sincerity, and it is tothese persons now approaching thethreshold of the Order with their pe-titions for help and to those thousandsof other persons who are just acrossthe threshhold and dwelling in the firstchamber of the organization that I wishto speak and help with a few analyticalthoughts.

It is unquestionably true that whenanyone of us discovers that we havemade either a failure of our past livesor that we are on the wrong pathleading to nowhere and accomplishingnothing that a few minutes reflectionwill convince us that if our past hasbeen wrong and unsuccessful it is dueto the way we have been thinking andour lack of understanding of the neces-sary principles, plus a lack of abilityto use certain powers and facultieswhich other persons use freely andefficiently. We may try to analyzeour station and attempt to console our-

selves with the thought that our pastfailure or past medium degree of successwas due to the fact that we were notborn of wealthy persons, or not bornin fortunate surroundings, or in fortun-ate contact with persons who couldhelp us, and we may try to consoleourselves with the further thought thatif we had been born under differentconditions and cast in a differentenvironment we might have had moresuccess. But such thoughts when

honestly examined become weak intheir power to console us and lessimpressive in their importance whenwe recall that many men and womenborn in the most unfortunate andhumble circumstances of life, in verypoor and primitive environments, haverisen to great heights without any aidor assistance on the part of any influ-ential person. An honest analysis of the matter gradually convinces us thatafter all our individual failures are dueto our individual and personal under-standing and practices.

It is this growing conviction thattempts the sincere ones to believe thatif they change their way of thinking,change their comprehension and under-standing of the principles of life, andlay aside the wrong practices andadopt new ones, a change can takeplace in our lives and start them upona new career leading assuredly to arealization of our desires and ambi-tions. If our analysis of the causeof our failures and dissatisfactions inthe past did not convince us that thesethings were due to the lack of personalpower or personal abilities or personalunderstanding, we would not seek tobring success and happiness into ourlives by making a new start. In other

words, if we were convinced thatenvironment and the Fates were re-sponsible for our conditions and ourposition in life then we would find nohope in any possibility of a new startunless we could change all of our pastinheritance and stay the hand of destiny.

I find, however, that the averageseeker who comes to the threshhold of our organization thoroughly convincedthat the Rosicrucians can help him tomake a new start and to find regener-

ation and the beginning of a newcareer also believes that this new startcan be made suddenly and that asthough in the twinkling of an eye therecent status can be changed and allobligations, or obstacles, all deterringfactors completely wiped away and anew path bordered by flowers andposies and sunlit with the warmestrays of light can be spread before himin a miraculous manner.

Let us look at this matter sensiblyand see just what the Rosicrucian

organization does do for these sincereseekers and what we can expect in theway of real changes constituting thestart of a new life. In the first place,

 joining the organization and beginningits studies as a member of the Society

does not by and of itself, bring anyreal change into our hearts and mindsexcept to the degree that we pledgeourselves to voluntarily lay aside thosewrong practices and false conceptionswhich we have discovered to be detri-mental. If the sincere seeker justentering the organization will analyzehis past and discover the things thathave interfered with his progress andwill wholeheartedly cleanse his mindof all conceptions of life’s principlesand start his new career with theorganization with an open mind and a

clean slate so far as his habits andpractices are concerned, he will un-doubtedly make the greatest change inhis life that can be made suddenly.From that moment on, however, hisprogress must be gradual and thechanges that are to take place mustbe slow and incidental in manifesta-tion.

Many members seem to think thatby joining the organization the highestofficers and workers will immediatelyaffect the environment and surround-

ing conditions of the member and thusgive him a new start. Now if  i t werepossible for the highest officers towield some magic wand and instantlychange the conditions and facultiesthat surround each member and trans-mute them from undesirable elementsinto the most fortunate and desirableones it would be equivalent to takingthe member bodily out of his home andout of his social and business sphereand placing him in a new countryamong strange people and among en-tirely different habits and customs.

Would this necessarily mean a changein the life of the individual and wouldit mean a change for the better? Is itnot true that if a sudden change of this kind was made in the life of an

1931  in humble circumstances, surrounded by

illness or sordid conditions and con-nected with unfortunate business activi-ties and burdened with heavyresponsibilities and obligations, andplaced him suddenly in a family of cultured and highly educated persons

of wealth and social standing with anopportunity of immediately associatinghimsel f wi th a progressive and success-ful business and coming in contact withhelpful and influential friends, would henot find it necessary to gradually changehis understanding and comprehensionand his ways of living so that he har-monized with the changes that surroundhim? Could he instantly, or quickly, oreven in a few months’ time adjust him-self to the new circumstances and derivefrom them the utmost benefit?

We may see this sort of thing done inthe moving picture plays or in novels,but I ask each one of you to consider itfrom the personal viewpoint, and try topicture the problems that would con-front you if such a change was suddenlymade in your life. You will admit thatthe first think you would have to dowould be to study or contemplate andanalyze and gradually comprehend thenew ways of thinking and acting, thenew customs and habits, the new view-point on every issue, the new vision fromevery angle in order that you might re-

late yourself properly to every incidentof your dail y li fe. U nless you did this  you most certainly would derive nobenefit from your sudden change, andwould probably be more unhappy andless successful than you had been in thepast. Therefore, you must realize thateven if the organization could magicallychange your entire surroundings in thetwinkling of an eye, or in a few months’time, it would not necessarily mean thatyou would be changed also and deriveany benefit from the change.

Fortunately, the organization doesnot claim to make any such changes inour lives, and, happily, the process of regeneration begins with us and notwith our environment and our sur-roundings.

 The organization realizes that sud-den changes either within us or aroundus are not fortunate or beneficial in anysense, i nasmuch, as they would naturally  resolve themselves into revolutions

rather than evolutions of our presentconditions. For this reason, the work of the organization is carefully and system-atically graded so that the changes takeplace in a manner least likely to disturb

the harmonium of our present status andmost likely prepare us to thoroughly un-derstand each simple change before an-other one is instituted. I have come incontact with many educators, manyengineers of economical problems in lifeand many workers in behalf of humanwelfare and they have all agreed withme that the system used by the Rosi-crucian organization in gradually chang-ing the comprehension and vision of theindividual before instructing him how tobring changes about in his environmentis the most efficient and the most har-

monious way of bringing about per-manent results.

Each new lesson or lecture of thework, each demonstration of simpleprinciples, each helpful suggestion sentin the many letters of personal guid-ance, carries with it the conviction of un-derstanding of a new law or the work-ing of a new faculty within our be-ings upon which we can always relyand which we plainly see can serve usin many ways. Each change in ourunderstanding and comprehension not

only eliminates and casts out foreversome former erroneous or false con-ception that has enslaved or held usback in our progress, but it broadensour vision and gives us a new view-point and, therefore, a new power touse in the mastership of our lives.

Each new experience which we have,as a result of our lessons, or as a re-sult of the help given by the executivesof the organization, or by the variousdepartment workers, not only demon-strates to us how the principles work,

and not only helps us in overcomingsome immediate problem or obstacle,but convinces us of the correctness of our new way of living and the de-pendability of the path upon which wehave started. Thus we journey alongthe new road as though we had justbeen born again into this world, learn-ing for the first time, the great knowl-edge of life itself. In fact, this is theonly way that we must look upon ournew start, once we have sincerely en-tered upon the path. We must look

upon it is though we had been bornagain and have left behind, as thoughpart of a previous incarnation, all of our previous beliefs, practices, customs,and habits, and now face the world

with a blank mind or an open mind,ready to receive new knowledge as achild receives its first lesson. Withsuch an attitude the new member soonfinds that while adjustments are takingplace within him and consequentlyaround him and in his relationship withhis environment, and while these ad-

 justments cause some disturbance andoften make for a restless period, lack-ing in many of the essentials of peace,harmony, and success, it is only a tem-porary period of adjustment that willsoon be overcome and be followed by

the enjoyment of the new blessingswhich result from the adjustments.

We cannot change from one socialposition to another, from one businessactivity to another, or from one fieldof thought to another, without passingthrough an intermediate stage of rest-lessness and lack of harmony andpeace. But even when a building is inthe process of alteration and looks itsvery worst, those who are most con-cerned realize that whereas the presentstatus is far worse than the previous

objectionable conditions and nothinglike what is hoped for and planned for,still there is the definite knowledgethat when the changes are completed,the hoped for benefits and blessingswill become evident and manifest.

From the very beginning of mem-bership in the organization, the sur-prising revelations of great truths sup-planting the false misunderstandings,we have had clearly pointed out to usthat while we must change our view-point and change our practices and

habits and while we are sure to berestless for a while in making thesechanges, we know that the new revel-ations will constitute the foundation of the blessings we have been lookingfor, and gradually these principles comeinto play in our every day affairs andbefore we realize it we find ourselvesmastering situations that used totrouble us and occasionally held uswithin unpleasant limitations.

We find ourselves possessing newpower to create and bring into manifes-

tation, new expressions of life, new re-sults in our activities, and more successin our plans. As the weeks and monthspass by, our advancement becomes notonly more definite but our victory overpast conditions and our ability to attract

the things we desire become more man-ifest to us and to our friends and ac-quaintances and soon we are enthralledby the attainment we are making andour rapid approach toward our goal.

It is here at this point that the pro-gressive ones begin to change thestandard of his goal and the ideal of his life. Just as he begins to realizethat he is nearing the realization of that change he dreamed for so manyyears, he discovers that he has theability to create a bigger and betterand a more glorious goal or ideal forhis life and he begins to embellish andornament the picture he holds as theultimate realization. This makes hisgoal a little more distant and lengthens

the journey he must take, but all thewhile he is experiencing the joy andhappiness of realizing the things thathe had previously set as his standardin life now become to him a con-tinuous journey of new realizations of 

accomplishments. His health improves,his power increases, his desire to livelonger becomes a dominant factor andlife itself is now a great book withmany chapters constantly being added,while he journeys on and on and en- joys every page of the story, hopingthat the end will never come, for inthe realization of his ambition and inthe enjoyment of his hopes, life is onegrand song.

Let us all keep these things in mindand remember that the great changesin our lives must begi n  first of all

within us in a subtle manner, free fromoutward demonstration or manifesta-tion, until we are ready to recreateour surroundings and adjust ourselvesharmoniously with them.

Faith Through Science

this would be as of faith in God, faithin a friend, faith in moral law, or inmedicine. Faith is subjective and per-sonal, being the full and completeacceptance of a t ruth, or throughrevelation as in the case of religiousfaith. These definitions apply to people in

general. To the mystic, however .Faith consists of absolute confidence inthe workings of laws and principles,which he tested and demonstrated. Those principles are to him, knowledge,the result of his experience.

Now the sum of all that has beensaid, leads us to see that the object of Faith is Truth. On the other hand.

Faith is an inward acceptance of, anact of adhesion of the mind to, certainpropositions as real and trustworthy, toan idea as true and obligatory, or to athing as beneficial. A few examples of 

N discussing the subjectof F ai th throughScience, I do not meanto dwell on the detailswhich this questionmay involve, but ratherto confine myself tofundamental points, asI see them. First, weshould endeavor to

reach some understanding of whatFaith is.

the object of Science is also Truth—i.e., knowledge of facts, laws and ap-proximate causes, gained and verifiedby exact observations and correct think-ing.

Although the object of Faith andScience is the same, their mode of attaining it is different. Faith is a priorknowledge and deductive reasoning,primarily subjective in its inception;while Science is a posteriori knowledgeand inductive reasoning, primarily ob-

 jective in its investigation. T hisdistinction, however, applies only to themethod and not to subject, love orapplication of Truth.

Sometimes Faith and Science arecontrasted. This is because Science is

departmental, given more to the con-sideration of the particular andincidental, than to the general andinclusive, as in the case of Faith.

F ai th through Science is reachedthrough a gradual evolution of thestudent seeker, after he has reached aphase beyond and above the physical,in the never ending cycle of havingused Faith as a premise from which tobuild. I refer here to theories concern-ing various physical manifestations,later coupled with fundamental lawsestablished through observation.

Scientists play the melody of causeand effect, to the key of tracing causesthrough effects. A physician observesand watches symptoms develop in hispatient, thereby diagnosing the cause of the illness and gives treatment accord-ingly. The chemi st goes into hislaboratory and puts a few drops of water under close examination, an-nouncing such results; that water is acompound of two known elements,hydrogen and oxygen. He makes note,therefore, that the result of the certain

combination of these two elements isalways water. This is proven and wehave Faith in the cure aided by thephysician, and in the demonstrationmade in the laboratory. A metaphysicianwould tell you simply that most com-mon illnesses can be avoided bybringing harmony into the life andbloodstream, by proper breathing andthinking, and sane habits of eating andresting. Likewise, the phenomena of the component parts of water representto him but one of the many, and,

indeed, one of simplest manifestationsof a great fundamental law of nature—the law of the triangle. Positive andnegative elements are attached and meetat the third point, with the inevitableresult of a new condition. In thisinstance, the condition is quite unlikeeither of the old ones, being neitherhydrogen nor oxygen, but water.

As a further comparison of the twomodes of attainment of Truth, by Faithand Science, we shall consider for amoment, the wave theory of L i ght.Scientific minds observe that lighttravels and proceed to measure its rateof speed, its gradually diminishingpower, and other commensurable pro-pensities. Reasoning deductively, fromthe old philosopher’s Heraclitus state-

ment that “all f orce is vibratory,”mystics understand that the highervibrations manifest to us as Light, andfrom this premise, they can build thevariations as analyzed by Science.

We now pass to illustrations andexamples, showing the interrelation of Faith and Science, throughout the vari-ous phases of life, and the fact, thatnotwithstanding the pretense of thematerialist to ignore Faith, when hedeals with Science; Faith is neverthe-less and always the underlying

foundation, upon which all the dis-coveries and researches of Science arebased, and it is that Faith which is theprimary cause of, and motive power,behind all the achievements of Science.

 The pioneers of Science, bef or ereaching the stage where discoverieswere made, were impressed throughFaith, with the idea that what theysought existed, in the domain of thought, and could be realized ma-terially. Relying on this assumption,they were led by the light of their

Faith, to the point where the finishedmaterial object which they were seek-ing revealed itself in its completeness,to their objective minds, and from thatstage the material realization wasextremely simple.

 The human mind has always beeninspired by the fact, that life is governedby definite laws and regulations, andthis has paved the way for our advancein the control of and mastery over theelements of Nature, for the betterment

and comfort of life. These achieve-ments are the result of years of struggleon the part of those men, who havemade it their object to solve the riddlesof Nature. Without their faith andtheir hope, those personalities, who

stand as beacons of light, in the annalsof mankind, would have entered therealm of Science, in the same manneras a soldier, who goes to fight thebattles without faith in the justice of hiscause. One consolation and reward fortheir splendid and unique devotion isnot the overwhelming of the world withinnumerable findings and theories, butrather the satisfaction of their ownfaith in the Divine and noble object of Life.

If we go through the history of Science, we are at once struck with the

fact, that all great inventions are notcreations of the human mind. They areonly discoveries. Electricity, magne-tism, energy in all its forms, werelatent potentialities, which existed longbefore they were brought under theobservation and control of the discover-ing mind. The inventor and Scientistare only channels through whom theforces of nature, ever seeking for ex-pression, reach their manifestations,ultimately. This persistent quest couldnot possibly be a characteristic of theinanimate, materialistic nature, butrather of a conscious, living element thatpermeates all Life in both its unexpres-sed and expressed forms.

 The world, in accepting scientificdiscoveries and data, manifests faith inthe highest degree. At times, we accepta theory or a fact, without knowing

how or why, notwithstanding our pre-tentions to complete knowledge. Theultimate conclusions of Science, itself,are nothing else than abstractions.Science is always relative. Its relianceupon certain principles usually amounts

to a mere act of faith. What we aretaught, we assimilate and cherish andwe become reluctant to be moved fromthe centre of the circle of our ownconvictions.

We have now reached some under-standing of what Faith and Science areand what their fields of action are, andalso their modes of operation. Wehave seen their close relationship, andthat Faith is the motive power andfoundation of Science. Science in turn,through its discoveries, increases ourfaith, and this increased faith enlargesour field of vision, and in opening ourminds toward higher possibilities, thusmakes the scope of further accomplish-ments, greater and greater.

As we fathom with Science, themysteries of Nature, and contemplate,in awe, the grandeur and vastness of creation, the systematic order of itsmanifestations, in theirinnumerablevariety of beauty and splendor, can wehelp but realize the existence of aSupreme Architect? who in His infiniteLove hasreleased the universe into

existence, in order to endow humanitywith the essential and greatest of allgifts—Consciousness, and thus throughScience we attain Faith!

some of the branchactivities i n adjoiningStates, I have dealtprincipally with schoolteachers, Sunday schoolteachers, and those who

have many young people under theircare and guidance. One interestingfact has revealed itself to me in thepast six years in these observations of the work and study of young people,and this fact is that they are more in-terested and more anxious to knowabout the great truths of life than theolder people even suspect.

I have found, for instance, that in anumber of Sunday schools where Rosi-crucian teachers o r superintendentscasually introduce some of our prin-ciples in the lessons, that the childrenbecome more interested in these prin-ciples and in the statements made re-garding the higher laws of life thanthey are in the old doctrines and creedswhich they have heard discussed andanalyzed so often. I have also foundthat the average boy and girl between

the ages of 12 and 16 becomes deeplyinterested in the subject of reincarna-tion, rebirth, and functions and actionsof the soul in the body and after tran-sition and similar doctrines and prin-ciples.

In discussing these wi th manyteachers and with many of the youngpeople, I find that the doctrines of re-incarnation, as explained in our work,appeal more to the sense of justice andfairness of the mind of youth than the

orthodox doctrines that we live butonce and are tempted in many waysand then judged for our acts, and

finally condemned to eternal punish-ment or reward without having anyother opportunity to undo the wrongs,make compensation, or adjust our livesaccording to a better understanding.

It is plain to see why the youth of the progressive countries in the worldshould readily accept the principlestaught in our work. In the first place,they do not have so many false con-ceptions and philosophical and religiousmisconceptions to wipe out of theirconsciousness before they can grasp or

accept what we teach. In the secondplace, the spirit of the new world isone of fairness, justice, mercy, andlove. The modernistic tendency in theworld today is teaching the youth thatcharacter is destiny and that their faterests in their own hands.

 The average young person most cer-tainly will not accept the old doctrineof predestination as our forbears ac-cepted it, and, in fact, they cannotconceive of any argument by whichtheir grandparents accepted such a doc-

trine and at the same time believedthat God was merciful and just.

 The teaching of scientific principlesin the schools, even in the lowergrades, has revealed to the youth manyfundamental principles of natural lawwhich are contrary to some of theancient church doctrines, and the state-ments and attitude on the part of scientific men toward a belief in a Godwho is merciful and just and who givesus every opportunity to redeem our-

selves constantly and who is forgivingand just in His consideration of ouracts, tends to make the young peoplebelieve that the real God of the uni-verse is someone whom they can un-derstand and whose laws and prin-

ciples they can comprehend.We must also take into considera-

tion that the average boy or girl of twelve years of age today is far moreintelligent and more broadly educatedin universal principles than the youthof fifty years ago. Think of the boyor girl of today being surrounded withthe telephone, the radio, the airship,and all of the modern achievements inthe scientific world and with the op-portunities through moving pictures,magazines, books from libraries, and

other means, whereby they can easilyaccumulate knowledge in an enjoyablemanner. The youth of fifty years agowas deprived of all of these benefitsand we have to admit that all of themodern scientific achievements not onlyafford our present youth opportunitiesof becoming more familiar with im-portant knowledge, but these inventionsand great achievements in themselvesbroaden the youth's viewpoint and un-derstanding of life and its accomplish-ments.

 Then, again, the modernistic ten-

dencies have not only broadened theviewpoint of the youth but widenedtheir privileges and their beliefs andconvictions. The letting down of thebarriers of conventionalities and thewidening of the field of human contactamong boys and girls may havebrought many evils in its wake, but ithas also broadened the youth’s view-point of life itself and through thewidened privileges and practices inwhich the youth may indulge today,they quickly learn the value of charac-ter, the automatic punishment resulting

from sin or evil, and the benefits of certain restrictions and good principles.

All of this helps the youthful mindto understand that character is destiny,that fate is created day by day, thatsins and errors may be wiped away byadjustment and compensation, and thatGod will redeem the one who is repentent or who attempts to make com-pensation and live properly. Theseconvictions do not coincide with many

of the doctrines taught by our grand-parents, or parents, and which somechurches and teachers attempt to teachto the youth of today.

When the youthful mind comes face

to face with a problem and has tochoose between doctrines theoreticallytaught to him in a Sunday school orchurch, or the principles that he hasseen working out in life itself, evenin the school yard or on the streetamong his playmates, he will choosewhat he has experienced or seen ex-perienced in the lives of his associatesin preference to doctrines that he doesnot find working out in actual situa-tions.

All this convinces me that the greatwork lying before all of us in the Rosi-

crucian Order is to bring our principlesinto the lives of our children and thosechildren whom we contact under favor-able conditions. The time may comewhen our organization will have somesort of a juni or l eague or junior move-ment with some of our work system-atized in the proper manner. But Ido not think that this is necessary inorder to help us, as parents, to carryout the great work in the lives of youth.

A great many of our members areteachers in public schools or Sundayschools. I know this must be so be-cause I have met many in the easternstates who are thus employed, andtaking the law of averages and multi-plying it by the entire membershipthroughout the country we must havethousands of members who are in con-tact daily or weekly with childrenwho look to them for some instructionand guidance. Here is where a greatwork can be accomplished without anyspecial organization to direct it or per-haps restrict it.

 The teacher in the classroom caneasily put many of the Rosicrucianprinciples into actual practice withoutlabelling them as Rosicrucian or with-out in any way interfering with theregulations of the school system. Oneof the fundamentals now advocated inour public school system is the teachingof civic behavior. This has been verysuccessfully done in a mild way, muchto the enjoyment and hearty coopera-

tion of the pupils. These teachingsinclude as elementary principles theidea that each one of us has certainrights which we may maintain and evenfight for, providing they do not in-fringe upon the rights of others, and,secondly, that all of us have certainrights which we must concede to allothers.

Another elementary principle is thatas we conduct ourselves and behaveourselves, so we continue to enjoy theprivileges and rights of citizenship andthe blessings of the world. Allteachers are supposed to do everythingwithin their power to put these ele-mentary principles into practice in theclass room and schoolhouse, and toillustrate them and demonstrate them

convincingly to the pupils. In doingthis, the teacher loses no opportunityto point out that if any pupil doessomething wrong he must expect somesort of punishment or privation as theautomatic result of his acts and not asany visitation of an evil one in theform of anger or retaliation. Certainly,right at this point, it would be verysimple to introduce the Rosicrucianprinciples of K arma and the law of compensation without giving them thesehigh sounding terms. Many otherprinciples contained in our work canbe introduced in this manner so thatthe child mind develops a comprehen-sion of the universal principles thataffect us all.

 Through the child’s contact withother children and through his contactwith his parents, he can be easilytaught the idea that just as his fatherand mother love him and will makeevery sacrifice for him and have notcondemned him to a life of evil andsin, but rather plan every day to makehis life happy and successful, so the

God of the universe has not selectedany of us to live lives of sin and evilin order to carry out some incompre-hensible and unjust principle, butrather decreed from the beginning of time that all persons should live happy,healthful, and successful lives, and thatwhenever we are not happy or healthyit is due to some violation of funda-mental principles on our part and notdue to any decrees or predestination

or any temptation on the part of Godmerely to serve some secret purpose.

In this way, the young mind willgrasp the idea of an allloving and allmerciful God and will also compre-

hend the idea that we are making ourown troubles in this world through ourown violation of principles, and that just as our parents will forgive andpermit us to have every opportunityto redeem ourselves and go on beinggood and happy again, so the God of the universe is glad to clean the slateof all evil at any time and permit usto start in life again at any momentin good grace and in the love of Hisnature. Once the youthful mind com-prehends these principles, many of thepresent doctrines that are taught in

church and Sunday school take on adifferent significance.

Every parent can begin at home byintroducing some of the foregoingprinciples and ideas into the lives of their children even at a very youthfulage, and I trust that those of our mem-bers who are in daily contact withchildren, or in contact with them onSundays in Sunday schools or else-where, will also consider what I havesaid and cooperate in establishing theseprinciples in the minds of our youth.

 The next and rising generation of adults will play an important factor inthe great changes that are taking placethroughout the world. I note that theadvocates of prohibition claim that thenext generation or the generation thatis now in its early youth will havelittle or no desire for strong drink andthat this will result in a widespreadacceptance of prohibition and will doaway with the present bootleggingtendencies.

In other words, if we maintain the

present attitude toward prohibition, ourvery young people who have no oppor-tunity or desire to taste strong liquor,will grow into manhood and woman-hood without developing such desiresand the present prohibition law willappear reasonable to them and therewill be no desire to violate it. Thiswill gradually result i n prohibitionbeing a successful issue.

I might say in passing, in this re-gard, that my experience with youth

has been that children in families wherebootlegging is practiced among theadults, these adults refrain from andgenerally refuse to give any of thestrong liquor to their children, realiz-ing the dangers that lie in the poison-

ous concoctions with which they dealand also realize the general weaknessesthat result from the indulgences. It istrue that among the youth now enter-ing i nto manhood t here is a great deal  of indulgence in alcoholic liquors, butwe must remember that men andwomen are just emerging from a periodwhere the use of alcoholic liquors wasthe acceptable thing and they wereborn with the desire for it surgingthrough their systems and saw theuse of liquor quite prevalent in theirhomes. The next generation, now con-

sisting of young children, will not havethese same tendencies.If a great issue like prohibition will

become a success in the future be-cause of the work being accomplishedamong the youth of today, think whatthe success of our work and our prin-ciples may be in the future if we canestablish them in the minds of boysand girls at the present time. Thechurch realizes this situation and ismaking every effort to stem the tide  of modernism by the introduction of stronger and more emphatic presenta-

tions of the old doctrines in everySunday school and group of children,believing that the salvation of the fu-ture work of the church lies in thework that is done at the present timeamong children.

But every analysis shows that thesechildren have a natural desire to widentheir point of view and to accept ourdoctrines and principles in preferenceto those of the orthodox ones which

seem contrary to their own reasoning.If we take advantage of these ten-dencies on the part of youth today, anew civilization with a greater andmore happy outlook on life and itsreal principles will be the natural re-

sult and this will mean a better nationin every sense of the word.I know that clergymen and eccles-

iastics will take issue with me andpoint out my argument as the workof the devil, but it has always been so.When Jesus introduced H is modernisminto the world, it was condemned inthe same manner and ever si nce then,the church has condemned every at-tempt to broaden the viewpoint of lifeand the introduction of newer prin-ciples.

History shows, however, that thechurch has had to gradually changeits position and keep pace with theevolving compr ehension  of  the new  generation and the church will beforced to do this again within the nexttwentyfive y e a rs . Therefore, thepresent opposition of the church towhat we are trying to do and themanner in which we live and the prin-ciples we teach our young people willpass away and I firmly believe thattwentyfive years from now the suc-cessful and most influential churches inevery community will be those whichare teaching our principles, or at leastteaching those principles which theynow condemn.

Assure the success and happinessand health of your children and theirfuture lives by laying the foundationnow while their minds are quick andimpressive, and before they are filledwith false doctrines and misconceptionswhich are so hard to eliminate.
