The rosette Happy new year !!

Winter, January 2018 edition of the TNSOCR newsletter

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Mixed emotions at this newsletter time - great Christmas parties, parades, meetings, dinners, and best of all Southern friends to share them all with. But with great sadness and anger too, as we recently watched our Tennessee hero’s grave desecrated in a vile and unlawful act by Memphis carpetbagger politicians. As well as the South’s beloved and only president’s statue removed the same night by the same scallywags. I am so grateful our national reunion was there in 2017 because I will never visit that dreadful place again or leave one penny there unless there is a real stauch monetary and legal action taken against the officials of this once Southern city. How grieved Gen. Forrest and the citizens, both black & white, who honored him a hundred years ago would be.

Our next state reunion will be at Henry Horton State Park and hosted by Marshall Rangers SCV Camp #297 and Susan McKissack Cheairs OCR #22. Please get your registrations and money in to both of these organizations to reserve your place! Activities you choose to participate in must be paid to the group hosting. Always fun and always a joy to reconnect with others of our Southern family we may not see often. Registration forms are on the Reunion/Convention tab on our website it you haven’t sent yours yet.

This is an election year. Due to illness Clara Craft has stepped down from her official positions. Ann Shepard, our Black Rose Keeper of the Rite, has moved from vp to president of Wild Mountain Roses #11. Clara’s office as TNSOCR VP in East Tennessee is now vacant. Dottie Meadows has submitted her name to be placed on the ballot desiring to fill this vacancy. No other positions have been vacated. Though any member in good standing can run for any of the positions we elect, these being President, 2 Vice Presidents: East and West, Secretary, and Treasurer. None of the appointed positions have been vacated and no one as yet has stated a wish to surrender or challenged to replace any of those offices. If there is anyone else out there with intent to become an officer – please speak up! This will be decided by acclimation at the state meeting in April if no others step up or by ballot if others wish to run against any incumbent.

I encourage everyone to attend Lee-Jackson Banquets that are being held in various places around our state. And even Lexington, Virginia, where our heroes rest. Again please see the calendar page of the website for those events I’ve been notified of.

Hope to see y’all at the state reunion or before!

Sophie Reilly Hatton Chapter #24, Lebanon

Greetings from Sophie Hatton OCR Chapter #24 We are so excited to introduce ourselves as a brand-new chapter. We had our official chartering ceremony on October 26, 2017 at the General Robert H. Hatton SCV Camp # 723 meeting in Lebanon. Since they are our sponsoring camp, we chose Sophie Reilly Hatton as our chapter name. We have cleaned her stone and that of John Hunt Morgan’s widow and daughter in the same cemetery.

We have been a busy group starting as soon as our SCV Camp agreed to sponsor us. We have participated in their turkey shoot fund raiser and decorated and participated in their annual Christmas party.

Starting back in the first of October members of our group were docents for both the Sam Davis Home during education days and Elm Springs during the Parade of Homes. Several members also did presentations for students at the Sam Davis home in September. We have visited with SCV camps in Blountville and Cookeville. We have participated in flagging graves and memorial days at both the Neal-Moore Cemetery and the Sam Davis Home in November. We have been active in educational presentations at Paris Landing, TN., Cedar Creek, VA, and Granville, TN. Many of us walked in the Lebanon Veterans Day Parade and several did the Winstead Hill Death March in November. We were represented at Pine Ridge and Eva Beach with the 19th Alabama Civilians. Several of us also represented our chapter at Circle P Ranch as demonstrators in their educational presentations. We were invited and attended many Christmas parties. Besides the SCV party some members attended Spring Hill Commissioners Historic Christmas Party at Rippavilla. We want to thank our Dottie and Tom Meadows and Debbie and Marty Smith who transferred to Sophie Hatton to help us get established. We appreciate their advice and encouragement. We have great plans for 2018.

Aunt Polly Eaton Williams Chapter #10, Gainesboro Sure has been a busy fall for some in our ranks! Beginning with a picnic with SCV/OCR brothers In Morristown and Blountville Reenactment. Then a big trip to Huntersville, Western Virginia with Tom & Dottie #24 and Betty #18 to dedicate new gravestones for 4 Georgia soldiers buried there. We then travelled to the site of the Battle of Carnifax Ferry and to the grave of Tom’s CS Ggrandpa. Tom is a fantastic tour guide!! Then a day trip to the Battle of Columbus-Belmont on the Mississippi River in Ky. The following weekend was back up to Ky. for the Battle of Wildcat. Beginning in October several of us participated in a very wet school day at the first Battle of Pine Ridge in Monterey, the following day we hosted the Ladies’ Tea, and on the third and final day I organized the memorial service for the 4 CS veterans buried there. We marched with the Lebanon SCV/OCR in the Veteran’s Day Parade. We participated in 2 memorial services, dedicating the new stone a very cold day in Smith County with many SCV/OCR members for Capt. Buck Moore and then proceeded to Smyrna to honor Sam Davis at his grave. I did my flag program at the encampment at the Mt. Juliet Homecoming. We helped decorate Elm Springs HQ of the SCV for Christmas. And the following week 3 members of this chapter, Susan, Penny, and I handled all the Friday tours for 100 people who visited during the Maury County Christmas Parade of Homes. The following day was spent at the CW Show and Carnton in Franklin with SCV/OCR/UDC friends from East TN. And the next day 3 marched the 2 mile Death March from Winstead Hill to the Carter House that nearly annihilated the brave Army of Tennessee in 1864. I was privileged to attend Christmas parties with Gallatin and Crossville Camps as well as our OCR Chapter Christmas dinner in Gainesboro. Roses from Crossville #1 joined us for a fun evening at the Cumberland Playhouse for an Irish Dance performance. Been busy honoring our heritage, soldiers, and the South, and having fun doing it all. Dibrell’s White Roses #13, Sparta In October of this year, our TNSOCR Chapter assisted our supporting camp, General George G. Dibrell SCV members in Sparta's Annual Liberty Square Event, which s always well attended by the community and many of the surrounding and outlying counties in Tennessee. Our booth had traffic most of the day, and we were able to distribute literature about our SCV Division and our OCR Society, as well as give interested folks a brief run-down on ome of the Civil War highlights in White County. The biggest draw of the day was the Confederate money we had reproduced and had available to hand out to anyone interested in the currency of the day. Sue actually spent her lunchtime making copies so our group would have more money to distribute in the afternoon! Our November and December meetings were small this year due to members' work schedules and poor health within our group. For the first time since the re-chartering of our group, we were unable to have our Annual Christmas Gathering, so we've ended the year on a rather blue note. But, to misquote Scarlett, “2018 is another year!” Happy New Year to all our Sister OCR Groups and may you have the best year ever! Nancy Tolbert Hambrick, President

Wild Mountain Roses #11, Elizabethton

On. Sept. 29th thru Oct. 1st,2017 Jackie Weaver Dennison & Ann Shepard assisted in the Battle of Blountville, TN along with the Dept. of East Tennessee Reenactment groups. Jackie & Ann organized the Saturday Ladies Tea and assisted the Vaughn's Brigade during their memorial to Confederate soldiers & reenactors that had passed away during the past year during that event. Mrs. Jackie Dennison has attended MANY SCV Camp meetings with her husband Bill Dennison during this time. Mr. Bill Dennison is a Brigade Commander in the southwest Virginia area, so Ms. Jackie assists him and attends most of the meetings with him. They also attended events in Charleston, SC in early Nov. & the Veterans Day Parade in Bristol, TN/VA on Nov 11. Clara Ingram Craft has been under the weather a lot this quarter & we ask that each of our members keep her in prayer that she gets better soon. Cindy Pate, Kay Millsaps, Sandra Kyte & Ann Shepard have attended meetings of the sponsoring SCV camp as often as possible. We had a Christmas dinner on Dec. 15th @ the Quail Hollow housing development Club house that was enjoyed by all that were able to attend!! As we look to 2018 we must all try to educate those we come in contact with thru our activities & events where we are able to gather & show Honor, Respect & love for our ascendants! Wishing everyone a happy & prosperous New Year in 2018!!! Ann Shepard, President

Debbie Erickson and Lou Shaw attended the Granville Fall Festival on Oct 6-7. It was well attended and it was a beautiful day but unfortunately a storm came through so Saturday evening was a mad rush to pack up before the rain hit. We packed the things in the trailer as the rain started.

Oct. 14 Vonda Dixon and her two granddaughters Violet and Cassie, Debbie, Lou, Jan Hensley and Pat and Ed Butler attended the reenactment at the Columbus Belmont State Park. The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful day. The park is located on rolling hills. Watching the battle was great looking down from one of the hills. It is just a beautiful park that I would like to encourage everyone to attend next year.

Paris Landing reenactment was Oct 20-21. Lou and Debbie helped with the school day. Jan arrived Friday night and helped with the Saturday program. This is a very nice park in the Land Between the Lakes and again we were blessed with beautiful weather.

Lou camped at Eva Beach on Oct 3-5 by herself. Debbie was in Florida with her father who was in the hospital and Jan was sick with a sinus infection. This weekend as usual was cold and it rained a lot. It was well attended in spite of the weather.

On October 30, 2017 two of our chapter members Monte & Brandi McDearis were blessed with the arrival of their daughter.

On November 25th our chapter participated with other chapters in decorating Elm Springs for Christmas. Kortney, the young rebels, Beth, Nellie and myself were there for this fun and productive day. Our chapter hosted the lunch for everyone working that day.

On November the 26 our chapter participated in 2 events. Kortney along with one of our little rebels gave tours at

Rippavilla for the Candlelight Tours event. That same evening Nellie and myself participated in the March from

Winstead Hill for the anniversary of the Battle of Franklin.

On Saturday December 2nd Kortney, Beth and myself acted as docents for Elm Springs during the Maury County

Roses of the Cumberlands #1, Crossville

We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and that a happy, healthy New Year is in store for all our Southern brothers and sisters. 2017 was a tough year for Southern Heritage groups/enthusiasts, but it is our prayer that God will save the South! However, we must do our part and remain active and vigilant. Several chapter members as well as some from other chapters enjoyed the Hamby Camp Christmas Banquet at the Cumberland Mountain State Park. (As an aside, Kevin Witherell stayed the night with us after the banquet, then joined hubby Jerry and son George for a successful "trap line run" the following morning in the form of a nice coyote.) Charles and Kevin attended the Civil War Show in Franklin. Additionally, Kevin and Jordy attended the Sam Davis and Capt. Moore Confederate Memorial Services. They and other members participated in/attended many other events, parades, etc. for which I do not have details. Charles, his friend Sandy and I attended the Pine Ridge Reenactment near Muddy Pond where I assisted with school day on Fri. and with the Ladies' Tea on Sat. It was a wonderful event and weather was perfect. Please continue to pray for those who are suffering with health issues and loss of loved ones. A reminder to all non-life members that dues @ $25 per member or family are payable throughout January and must be submitted to the TNSOCR Registrar by the end of the month.
