The 2011-12 fiscal year was one of great celebration and astounding accomplishments against all odds. In November, 400 supporters, survivors and staff gathered to celebrate The Rose’s 25 years of service. What fun we had -- looking back, remembering the good and bad times, and saying “thank you.” What plans we had – looking forward to a new year of growing our insured patients while maintaining the same level of sponsored services for women in need.

And then … the months following our celebration made it clear that our work was far from over.

We were besieged by requests for help. The fear and uncertainty that pervaded our State brought continued economic woes and with it the loss of jobs and medical insurance. More women than ever before turned to The Rose for help, and no one was turned away. The demand for our services taxed every existing resource and pushed funding and our staff to their limits. We had no choice, we are driven by our mission - access to quality breast health care for every woman.

By the end of July 2012, over a thousand more uninsured—a total of 9,686—found care at The Rose ... a level and depth of care that is not offered anywhere else in Texas … care that meant hope for all and life for those diagnosed with breast cancer.

We are proud to share our successes with you, proud of the work that has been done, yet we know it cannot begin to compare with what lies ahead of us. We are confident that we will meet every challenge because of the amazing support from our insured patients, our funders, and the hundreds of individuals who give from their hearts -- people like you – The Rose’s very own caring community.

Thank you.

Dorothy Gibbons Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

The Rose Invites Women to ThinkGinger Smith was well aware that 40 marks the age when it’s recommended that a woman receive an annual mammogram. She knew, but fear of the unknown made her put it off … until her friend Kathy suggested they make a day of it. Now the community organizer who helps take care of more than 85,000 people annually through the Mission Centers of Houston is taking care of “me, too.”

That’s the concept behind a new awareness campaign launched at The Rose in October that asks women to make a commitment to breast health care. Me2 can be interpreted in three ways: (a) an affirmation of women who think “me, too” and schedule an annual screening, (b) a way to encourage women as they play with the concept of “me plus two” and enlist two insured women to join them for a Me2 day of mammograms and fun. (Facebook and Pinterest will be outlets for sharing how they are taking care of themselves and others too.) And finally, (c) “me to the second power” celebrates the impact that three insured women coming to The Rose cover the cost of an uninsured woman’s care.

“I really like the idea that two friends and I can cover a mammogram of an uninsured woman simply by taking care of ourselves,” said Smith when introduced to the concept of Me2. “I work with women every day who wait until everyone else – family, friends – have what they need before they ever consider their own concerns. I’m pleased to support another nonprofit that has found a way to make their work sustainable,” said Smith.

Sustainability was the impetus for a three-year business plan that challenges The Rose with the vision of almost tripling the number of procedures offered through its two facilities and two mobile units by 2015. Once accomplished, the ratio of three insured women for every one uninsured woman will enable The Rose to use monies received from donations and grants to expand services and the outreach.

“I am so excited about our plans and this new awareness campaign,” said Dorothy Gibbons, the CEO and Co-Founder of The Rose. “Every woman deserves The Rose -- the quality of care we provide; the dignity we offer; and the compassionate, caring community we are. Me2 will allow The Rose to grow with confidence, ensuring we will be here for many more women in the future.”

Linda Evans planned on volunteering at The Rose and then discovered the many benefits of thinking Me2. She told staff at The Rose that due to changes in employment she hadn’t had a mammogram in two years. They asked if she wanted one and she did. Before the day was over, she had peace of mind and had comforted others waiting for their appointments.

American Cancer Society and Yoplait Recognize Dorothy Gibbons and The Rose Dorothy Gibbons is a breast cancer champion. Supporters of The Rose have long been aware of the Co-Founder and CEO’s tireless efforts in the 26-year history of the organization. November 2012 the recognition went nationwide as the American Cancer Society successfully nominated Gibbons for Yoplait’s So Good Initiative. The distinction is meant to celebrate and empower a select group of breast cancer champions who have taken their outstanding everyday efforts to fight breast cancer “from Good to So Good.” Yoplait will provide monetary awards totaling $134,000 to help 14 champions across the U.S. improve their already outstanding community-based breast cancer efforts. The gift to The Rose will help fund the Empower Her Sponsorship Program, ensuring that an additional 200 uninsured women will receive care. About the American Cancer Society:The American Cancer Society is the most effective breast cancer-fighting organization in the world. The Society invests more in breast cancer research than any other cancer type, and thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before. Today, nearly three million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. will celebrate another birthday this year.

Energy-Saving Upgrades at The Rose Help Save LivesThe Rose anticipates saving between $34,000 and $38,000 annually after making $325,088 in improvements at its Featherwood location in southeast Houston. Funds for the upgrades came, in part, from the Energy Efficiency Incentive Program (EEIP), an initiative of the City of Houston’s Green Office Challenge which recognizes innovative ways -- such as retrofits and new operation methods -- that can be introduced to reduce utility costs and greenhouse emissions in office buildings.

“We will be able to cover the medical costs of more than 300 women each year as a result of those savings,” Dorothy Gibbons, CEO and Co-Founder of The Rose, said. “Everything we do is for our women. So we were first in line when we discovered the potential funds available through the Energy Efficiency Incentive Program (EEIP). We are incredibly grateful for the community support that helped make these upgrades possible.”

Colliers Property Management provided oversight of the project while Danny Earp and Oates Industries completed the roofing at a reduced cost.

Every woman deserves quality, breast health care …Announcing New Additions to Patient Navigation Services

“On the day I was diagnosed, I vaguely remembered someone telling me to make sure to get my dental work done now. But everything was so foggy that day, and I could not recall why I should do this. I’m so glad I had a nurse to call to ask. Cathie explained that chemotherapy lowers my immune system, which poses a greater risk for infection with dental work. I know I can call her anytime and ask any other questions…” – a grateful recipient of patient navigation.

After hearing, “You have cancer,” all the words that follow can seem like a foreign language. So having a guide through the medical maze of treatment – your own personal patient navigator – is a welcomed resource.

Recent funding for an Oncology Nurse Navigator from the Avon Foundation for Women has allowed The Rose to expand patient navigation services to insured as well as uninsured patients.

Cathie Sublett, Registered Nurse, joined The Rose in July, bringing an impressive background in ICU nursing and home health. She completed Breast Health Navigator Training in September.

Cathie’s warm, reassuring smile and nurturing demeanor are welcomed additions to the team of navigators who assist more than 80 women – either newly diagnosed or currently in treatment -- each month. Cathie’s particular focus is ensuring our newly diagnosed patients are aware of clinical trials. She provides each woman with an explanation of her particular cancer and makes her aware of her options for sources of treatment. With her broad knowledge of programs throughout Harris and the surrounding counties, she is able to connect the patients of our referring physicians to assistance near where they live as well as help with securing wigs, locating support groups, and much more.

Now, all of our patients -- insured or uninsured -- have the benefit of patient navigation. “Our goal is to help them make informed decisions about their treatment choices,” says Cathie. “And for every woman to know she has a place and a person to turn to.”

One woman’s experience …Survivors Sharon Haidusek and City Councilmember Ellen Cohen (pictured at left) wait in the “green room” before appearing on a breast cancer awareness segment on Great Day Houston with Deborah Duncan. Sharon, who has two degrees in hotel/restaurant management and a resume highlighting experience at notable hotels and well-regarded establishments throughout the hospitality industry, praises our Patient Navigators.

“I’m extremely grateful to all the people at The Rose. I had my ultrasound and biopsy done at the Galleria location where I was treated with kid gloves. Everybody was loving and understanding,” she explained. Her gratitude prompted her to not only send a thank you note but to share her story with Deborah Duncan’s viewers.

“I CARE” Heard Loud and Clear from VolunteerThe I CARE In Action program offers Methodist Hospital employees a unique opportunity to help make a difference in the greater Houston community by providing employees with paid time to volunteer their expertise and passion to assist others.

Dawn Elliott was one such volunteer. She chose The Rose because 11 years ago – as a then 8-year survivor – Co-Founder Dr. Dixie Melillo performed a biopsy for her. “I was very frightened of a recurrence of breast cancer, but her excellent bedside manner and calm demeanor put me at ease,” she explained.

After assisting with a variety of communications projects in October, she was asked by staff if she would be open to speaking to a church on behalf of The Rose. Since her faith tradition was unknown, an “out” was immediately provided should she feel any discomfort.

“I’m a preacher’s daughter,” she laughingly explained as she quickly accepted the role.

Speaking of her experience as a 19-year-survivor, Dawn made quite an impression on the women at the North Houston church. One member of the congregation wrote her afterwards, “As I listened to your recounting of all that happened … on your breast cancer journey, I realized that your testimony is not just to help women become more aware of their bodies, I realized that prevention is critical. I am very thankful that you came and spoke to the women about cancer.”

The Rose is also extremely grateful to all our volunteers. We have needs all year long, such as answering phones, attending health fairs, scheduling patient appointments, and graphic design. If you would like to know more about corporate volunteer programs like I CARE In Action or individual volunteer opportunities, please email [email protected].

The Rose has been living the “best of times” and the “worst of times.” For that we owe you – our patients and supporters – a thank you and a sincere apology.

Over the past four months, our ancient phone system and limited staff combined with an increase in calls meant reaching us was often difficult. The increase in the number of calls to The Rose is a good thing. Every day more and more women are discovering The Rose’s high level of quality care. And, every insured woman understands that her paid mammogram helps us care for someone without insurance.

But if you or your physician calls and has to hold for very long, that’s a bad thing.

We’re facing two problems -- an ancient, well-used telephone system (actually it’s only 8-years-old but in the communications world that’s getting close to ancient) that simply cannot keep up with the higher volume AND a need for more employees to answer and direct those calls.

Believe me, a new telephone system and adequate staff are funding priorities for 2013. Your help or funding suggestions toward reaching that goal are very much appreciated. Our short-term answers – we’ve improved software and we’re making shifts in personnel – are helping. In the meantime, our commitment to our patients compelled us to find ways to remind those who were more than 16 months “late” in scheduling their annual mammogram that it was time to take care of YOU.

I can’t tell you how many women have said they appreciated that extra reminder. For at least two women our call may have translated into a chance for longer survival. Fortunately the cancers we discovered fell into the “early stage” of diagnosis. One woman told me, “Who knows how long I would have waited? Thank goodness The Rose kept at me.”

Every woman deserves The Rose and the quality breast health care we provide. So we promise – with your continued support -- to “keep at it” in whatever way is needed.

Thank you for your patience and support and, most of all, for celebrating with us throughout 2012.

As we enter into a New Year, we remain grateful for all the women who always choose The Rose, for all the physicians who refer their patients to The Rose, and for all the other ways our community supports The Rose.

Shrimp BoilMore than 1,000 participants filled the Pasadena Convention Center for The Rose’s 23rd Annual Shrimp Boil July 14th. For the first time in its history, the afternoon-long community event exceeded $100,000 in funds raised, including the addition of a never-before-utilized $10,000 Kingfish sponsorship level.

Jump for The RoseInclement weather delayed but did not deter the fundraising by the 3rd Annual Jump for the Rose skydiving event on September 29 and 30. JFTR’s founder, Marian Sparks, was also recognized by Susan G. Komen for the Cure for her leadership and strength, bringing national recognition to JFTR and The Rose.

Bikers Against Breast CancerJanet and Bobby Slocum, owners of Second Chance Saloon, launched the BABC’s push toward a record-breaking 5th anniversary with an October fundraiser and became the first-ever $15,000 “Leader of the Pack” Sponsor. The 5th Annual Bikers Against Breast Cancer is scheduled

for May 11, 2013 and is currently recruiting more sponsors. In addition to the Slocums’ generous support, San Jacinto Harley Davidson is partnering with BABC – scheduling the ride as their annual open house (which attracts thousands) and thereby ensuring additional riders, media and sponsors.

Breast cancer knows no age limits and neither does raising awareness. In October, 17 schools -- ranging from pre-school to higher education -- put the fun in fundraising and donated more than $35,000, enough to help over 300 women secure much-needed mammograms!

In recognition of their A+ efforts, we’ve inducted these schools into The Rose Honor Roll, a new initiative to assist and encourage students in their awareness-building activities.

Examples of their creativity include the second annual, campus-wide, male beauty pageant held at Rice University. “Mr. Rice” brought tons of entertainment, lots of laughter, and highly appreciated funds.

On the high school front, Seven Lakes High School, transformed their Orange Out Day to a Pink Out day for The Rose. Sales of their Pink Out T-shirts and donations totaled $10,000. Meanwhile, the annual Dig Pink game at Cypress Falls High School has turned into a community event with other high schools in the district and their sister school, LaBay Middle School, joining the cause.

The Rose has lots of CHEERS for these compassionate (and clever) students!
