TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Zechariah 12:10-11, 13:1 Zechariah describes the mourning that will occur over Jesus' crucifixion. The people of Jerusalem will mourn him as they would mourn an only son or a fallen king. Second Reading: Galatians 3:26-29 Paul reinforces that all those who accept Christ are equal in God's eyes. Man or woman, Jew or Greek, is unimportant in God's eyes if you have true faith in Jesus. Gospel: Luke 9:18-24 Jesus asks the disciples who they think he is. They reply that he is the Messiah. Jesus forbids them to tell this to others, and explains that first he must suffer, be put to death, and rise up on the third day. He explains to them that they also must be willing to suffer for his sake if they wish to be saved.

From the desk of Fr. Charlie Dear friends in Christ, Back in the year 1984, over 300,000 young people from all over the world responded to the invitation of Our Holy Father, Saint John Paul II, for an International Jubilee of Youth, on Palm Sunday in Rome. Looking out at the crowds of youth from all over the world, he said, “What a fantastic spectacle is presented on this stage by your gathering here today! Who claimed that today’s youth has lost their sense of value? Is it really true that they cannot be counted on?” The following year, Saint John Paul announced the institution of World Youth Day on December 20, 1985 and the first official World Youth Day was held in 1986. World Youth Day is held every year, but every few years, the Pope would call an International World Youth Day. Saint John Paul attended the International World Youth Days in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1987), Santiago de Compostela, Spain (1989), Czestochowa, Poland (1991), Denver, USA (1993), Manila, The Philippines (1995), Paris, France (1997), Rome, Italy (2000), and Toronto, Canada (2002). Pope Benedict continued with Cologne, Germany (2005), Sydney, Australia (2008), and Madrid, Spain (2011). Pope Francis went to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2013 and now he is preparing for Cracow, Poland this summer from July 25th to July 31st. I had the opportunity to attend the World Youth Day in Madrid five years ago. It was an incredible experience, especially seeing the amount of young people from everywhere. Many of us slept out in the field all night waiting for the arrival of the Holy Father the next morning for the celebration of Mass. When he arrived, Pope Benedict told us how much he loved us and how proud he was that we came from all over the world to see him.

In calling the youth of the world to Cracow, Pope Francis reminds us that this is also the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The theme of this year’s World Youth Day is, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Pope Francis goes on to say, “You, dear young men and women, have you ever felt the gaze of everlasting love upon you, a gaze that looks beyond your sins, limitations, and failings, and continues to have faith in you and to look upon your life with hope? Do you realize how precious you are to God, who has given you everything out of love? Saint Paul tells us that ‘God proves His love for us in that, while we are still sinners, Christ died for us.’ Do we really understand the power of these words?”

But what about those who can’t get to Cracow at the end of July? The Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate are hosting a weekend event called “World Youth Day – Not a World Away” at their Motherhouse, Marycrest, in Monroe from July 29th to July 31st. This event is for teens and young adults who are unable to go to Poland but who are interested in deepening their love for Jesus and their Catholic Faith through World Day Youth activities. For more details on this event, including registration, please check the website of the Parish Visitors – parishvisitorsisters.org – or you can call Marycrest at (845) 782-9593. We pray for the success of the World Youth Day in Cracow and the event that will take place at Marycrest. God bless you! Father Charlie
