Encyclical on the Environment

A remarkable aspect of Pope Francis’s recent climate-care encyclical, Laudato Si’, is that it draws on documents written by eighteen differnet bishops’ conferences around the world, most of them in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. By quoting leaders of communties that are suffering the most from climate change and not just writing about them, Pope Francis embodies the dialogical spirituality, the “integral ecology,” he calls for in his encyclical.

NOVEMBER 6, 2016

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 A king tortured a Jewish family, and tried to make them violate the laws. They all refused to give in and violate the laws. All of the family members told the king they would rather die at his hands than surrender their hope of being resurrected by God. Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2:16—3:5 Paul prays that the Thessalonians will be strengthened by God. He also asks them to pray that God's word will continue to spread, despite the persecution of Christians that was occurring at that time. Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 Jesus encountered some Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection. Jesus refuted them by quoting Moses, who called the Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jesus then said. "God is not the God of the dead but of the living. All are alive for him."

L I D G Y T F T AT I MWOW!…

Three weeks ago I asked for some volunteers and I

was feeling somewhat optimistic. I figured that we might get 15 – 20 people. That was optimistic. Instead 15% of the community came forward to make an offering of time and talent to the Lord and to the parish. WOW!

Over eigthy people have volunteered to do a little more than they were doing, to build up our church (both the building and the assembly) a little more into the house/family of the Lord. WOW!

I included the letters across the top of the page for your refrigerator or bathroom mirror. My mother put this on our refrigerator when I was in High School. She did not tell us what it meant because she wanted us to think first and play with the letters. After months of our questions and pestering her she told us that it means:

Lord I Do Give You Thanks For The Abundance That Is Mine.

This came to mind when I saw how many people responded yes. Again WOW! Thanks, Fr. Joe

Sacred Heart Parish Outreach Warming Station

Chapel of Sacred Heart 151 Stage Rd., Monroe, NY

Sacred Heart Warming Station will be opening, beginning Tuesday, November 15th, 2016 at 9:00pm. A warming station is a place where those, who have nowhere to go, can escape the cold, enjoy a hot meal, or a bowl of soup, and a cup of coffee. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart is a heated facility where those in need of comfort can find refuge from extreme cold weather. It is a place where we can then make referrals to those existing agencies, within the community, that can provide a more permanent solution to homelessness. We are currently seeking volunteers to help with this ministry. HONOR Housing of Middletown (Helping Others Needing Our Resources) will help us by providing technical assistance. Training will be given to all the volunteers. Training dates are held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Middletown at 7:00pm on West Main St, please use the Mulberry St. entrance. Dates are Monday, October 24th and Monday, November 28th. This informational session takes place at the Middletown Warming Center, which has been operating for the past 8 years. Additionally, there will be a meeting for all volunteers at the Chapel of the Sacred Heart on Wednesday, November 9th at 7:30pm where we will explain the procedures specific to our program. Volunteers will be responsible for screening, logging in, welcoming and serving a meal for guests and will remain overnight. Doors will open at 9:00pm and be locked by 9:30pm. If a guest leaves, he/she is not permitted to return until the next evening. Substance abuse will not be tolerated. The police will be aware of our program. All will leave the premises by 7am. We anticipate serving between 5 and 10 guests per night. Males and Females will be separated. The Warming Center operates from November 15th through March 31st. Please contact Betsy Johnston at 845-782-8510 or email [email protected] if you are interested in helping. We will need 60 volunteers. This opportunity is open to adults of all faiths and would welcome the participation of our surrounding houses of worship. Background checks and completion of a “Safer Spaces” course is mandatory. Thank you as we continue to grow as a “community of hope!”
