SO, WHAT IS OUR MISSION ABOUT!

“The mission of the Church is: “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”.

And local churches provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs.

(The Book of Discipline of the UMC, 2008)

Wait!! Please, go back and read it again. You might have read it dozens of times before, but read it again. Read it slowly. Read it aloud. Read it again.

At the beginning of the second year working together at Beth Eden UMC, and I would like to share my gratitude with you all for your support, however in this new time that God has given to us I have to invite you all to do a better job in accomplishing our mission, so let us be creative and basic with me. Basic in using the powerful weapon as it is to pray and create in seek-ing for any way that can help us to start making connections and developing relationship with our neighbors.

Now let’s take a careful look at that statement because each word in it is crucial.

Until now was our statement in August 2015, and I think still, our declaration is pertinent and real. We do not have doubt that God’s help in all this two years journey had been real. We start seeing the progress, new peo-ple-neighbors are beginning to attend our activities and Sunday worship.

Mission - What is a mission? Put most simply and directly, a mission is what we are supposed to be doing and what we are to do. Our mission is our reason for being. It is the cause for which we exist. It is the way we are to be spending ourselves. Our mission is the reason why we are here. Our mission is what we are about. Our mission is what we are given to do by a higher authority. Our mission is not something we choose or define or mod-

ify. Our mission is given to us and we are charged and help responsible to fulfill that mission. Our mission is not optional. Either we undertake our mission joyfully and enthusiastically or we fail completely and endure the consequences of our failure.

“To make disciples of Jesus Christ” God through Christ charged the Church with this mission. Matthew 28: 18–20 is but one of many, many pas-sages of Scripture that could be cited to demonstrate this.

* That suggests that the church on every level and in every form is charged with this mission * That means that the church, not matter how we define it, has this as its mission. * That means that the huge cathedral, the tiny rural frame building, the established congregation, the new congregation that is just beginning to grow, all of these and every other example you can imagine-share in their common mission, one common calling, one common task given them by God through Christ.

The Church, as a body of believers in Christ, does not choose its mis-sion, does not decide whether or not it will accept this mission. Instead, one definition of the church –capital C or small c- is that the church is a group of persons committed to fulfilling the mission given to those persons by God.

And what is that mission? Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ!

Ah, here we are, working with a new proposal for this summer and for the life of the Church: 1. To the regular ministries: Sunday School, Seniors Group, Women-Men-

Youth Groups, Drama Ministry, Grace Notes Choir, Emmaus Walk, Vaca-tion Bible School, Beth Eden Cafe ;

2. Now, we add the New Ministries: Weekly Movie Night, Monthly Com-munity Dinner, Monthly Service for Searchers with Christian Live Mu-sic…all these activities have been a wonderful help to have new neigh-bors in our celebrations and Sunday Worship;

Page 4: The Rock - WordPress.com€¦ · 01.09.2016  · Until now was our statement in August 2015, and I think still, our declaration is pertinent and real. We do not have doubt that God’s

Page 3

But that is not all: Church Council approved this week to have, on THE FOURTH SUNDAY, FREE COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS FOR ALL OUR VISI-TORS; (beginning 15 minutes before service and 30 minutes after the ser-vice).

A new ministry that we are launching with hopes and faith that Lord Jesus will invite many through our own effort.

Then my dear friends, let us prepare ourselves for this new church-year and to do our mission task. For by the Grace of God and the strength of the Holy Spirit we will do all we can to remain reaching out to our neighbor-hood and to incorporate others into the family of God.

In His name, Pastor Mario S. Mayer

Follow That Star!

Did you see the Silhouette of Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem in the Eden Cafe ? It’s there to remind us of a very important event our church offers as a Christmas gift to our community. As a church family, we need to all take part in

some way and there are many “job openings” and items needed before the December 3rd Bethlehem Market Place: an Interactive Experience happens. This year we are combining ALL of our Christmas events! This means they will all occur on the same day, December 3, 2017 from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm. This means the Christmas Cookie Walk, the Gift Baskets, and the Chil-dren’s Christmas Shoppe will be COMBINED with the Bethlehem Market Place! We are also bringing back Music, so every 30 minutes will be a new local group performing in the sanctuary! This includes the Alleluia Quartet the last 30 minutes or more!!

All this means more people are needed to help!

The Gift Bag Items needed are small personal items like soap, candles, cards, hand lotion, etc. The Children’s Christmas Shoppe needs your household items that a child can purchase for pennies to a dollar to give to their par-ents & other family members. The Cookie Walk needs your baking skills to provide a variety of Christmas Cookies. The Cookie Walk and Children’s Christmas Shoppe needs helpers. Other people needed: An emcee for the music performers so that they are introduced and kept

on schedule. A person to oversee the communion supplies during the hours of the

event and also keep the restrooms clean. Poster Makers

Dear Pastor Mario & Friends at Beth Eden,

I would like to thank you for naming us (Alleluia Quartet) Ambassadors for the Beth Eden UMC during our recent concert. It was a nice surprise and is very much appreciated. The support that we have received over the years from our Beth Eden family is almost overwhelming. I would also like to thank you for your recognition of our wives and families. Too often their sacrifices, which have allowed the Quartet to continue in its ministry, have gone unnoticed.

God Bless, John Vanderheyden, Alleluia Quartet

To our Beth Eden Church Family,

From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank our church family for their many cards, visits, and prayers during my mom’s medical issues and subsequent passing. A special thank you to Pastor Mario for his visits to the hospital and Wesley Willows. She loved her church and knew she was loved by many in the church and this truly touched her heart. We spent a lot of time talking about how blessed she felt. Thank you Pastor Mario for her meaningful service, Barb for the beautiful music, and Jarrod for his partici-pation. We would also like to thank the United Methodist Women for the lovely luncheon and all those who provided food including: Jean, Karen W., Dixie, Elaine, Rhonda, Kim, Nancy D., Helen E., Helen R., Joan M., Karen A., Barb, Norma S., Nancy T., Ruth P., Wilma, Ginny, Delores B., Carol B., Dar-lene, Marcia, Helen P., Dianne Y., and Kathy B. As my mom often quoted: “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.” She is safely home with my dad and Armando!

God’s blessings, Patti Luevano & Family
