Our VCE English teachers under the leadership of George Dimovski hosted Deputy Chief English Assessor Karen Graham. Karen delivered an interacve workshop that focused on comparave wring. (Knowing what to compare, how to compare, wring the essay etc.) The workshop was a fantasc learning opportunity for our staff and will be a great ad- vantage for our students as they prepare for their final SAC. Our Year 12 English students were invited to aend a session with Karen in Echuca, the session will focus on revision for the exam, again this is an excellent opportunity for our students and saves them travelling to Melbourne for access to such a quality presenter. Congratulaons to Steph Crouch and Jasmin Malham who won the Murray River Culinary Challenge and will now compete in the Grand Final on the 12 th of September. This is a very presgious compeon and gives the students real life experience of preparing high quality meals under pressure. Our Year 7 students have been hosng many community organisaons to hear about the contribuons they make to our community. We thank these people for giving up their me to talk to our students especially Gavin from St Vinnies, Hayley from the CFA and Amanda and Jodi from Rochester Community House. With this informaon and addional research, the students will now begin a 21 st Century Project based Learning Acvity which will be pre- sented at a Learning Expo. Thank you to all the families that parcipated in the Parent Opinion Survey, we value your feedback and will reflect upon it as we plan the future direcon of Rochester Secondary College. Students and staff are gearing up for Fun Day”, the acvies look great and the food sounds delicious, we look forward to seeing all students aend the day, parents and families are also very welcome to aend. We have experienced a very tough couple of weeks at the College, with staff experiencing the loss of loved ones. Our deepest condolences go to Linda Belot on the loss of her daugh-ter and former student Aleisha. The staff have been incredibly supportive and are demon-strating incredible teamwork to cover for our absent staff. Our thoughts are also with Helen Coughlin whose father passed away and to Hayley Gray and Paul Cresswell who both lost their respective fathers- in-law this week. The resilience and compassion of the Rochester Secondary College staff has been outstanding and I would truly like to show my appreciation for all the ‘extra’ work staff are prepared to do to help one another. HEADSPACE IS HERE!

R ochester Secondary College has been the successful recipient of Headspace support in schools.

For the remainder of this term and into Term 4 we will have a Social Worker from Headspace in Shepparton visiting us on a fortnightly basis to meet with students for counselling sessions.

This service began last Friday and the feedback has been positive. If you would like to know more about this service, please contact Kate Taylor, Student Wellbeing Coordinator at the school.

Murray River Culinary Challenge

O n Wednesday 22nd August Rochester Secondary College and Echuca College competed in the second round of the MRCC. Stephanie Crouch and Jasmine Malham represented

our College and were prepared for the day by practicing the menu several times before the competition.

The teams had a set time to present two dishes of a three course menu. Both teams were nervous and had an issue with time but all dishes were presented and the competition was very close.

The teams were judged by two chefs from Rich River Golf Club three judges commented how well all the teams performed and how hap-py they were to be able to see how the students have grown over their years of judging.

There can only be one win-ner and Rochester Secondary College proved too good on the day.

Jasmin and Steph should be very proud of themselves.

Innovation Challenge 9&10 STUDENTS

T he Innovation Challenge is a 3 day program, which exposes Year 9 and 10 students to multi-faceted engineering prob-lems, testing their ingenuity in developing sustainable and

feasible solutions. It is presented by EWB volunteers and industry partners. The problems are designed for students to explore the social, economic and environmental implications of technological innovations and large-scale projects in the world.

The problems are coupled with activities to highlight the im-portance of teamwork, communication and community consulta-tion in engineering and large-scale infrastructure projects. In addi-tion, students are informed on various university pathways, facili-ties and support structures including scholarships, clubs and socie-ties, and residential colleges.

This year the Innovation Challenge will run 28th – 30th November 2018.

Registrations are open now and close September 21st. There are scholarship opportunities that are available but must be applied for by August 31st. Year 11 Pre-Driver Education Program

Y ear 11 students are booked-in to attend the two-day Pre-Driver Education Program in Elmore. The program is de-signed to provide young drivers with the skills and tech-

niques to ensure they are safe, responsible road users. They do not need their Learners Permit to complete the program. As such, we feel that this will be a very valuable program for our students and we expect that all students will attend. Three groups will attend during the last two weeks of the term with approximately 16 students in each group. There will be no cost this year for the program, due to the very generous spon-sorship from the Elmore Charity Ball Committee and Parents’ Club. Depart Echuca Road at 8.45 am and return by 3.30 pm. Group 1 – Thursday 13th and Friday 14th September Group 2 – Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th September Group 3 – Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th September Permission forms have been sent home with your child. Can you please ensure that these are returned to the box in the office by tomorrow Friday August 31st. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me at the College. FARM AND ROAD SAFETY EXPO

I f there was a day created to describe Rochester, it would be the Farm and Road Safety Expo. Volunteers, police, farmers and many

others who care about providing the safest and happiest community for the younger generation were present and eager to teach

children (ranging from 4 – 13 years of age) a range of skills that will keep them safe. Our Year 7’s had a challenge on the day, they

had to find 26 safety facts that started with each letter of the alphabet, as well as visit every site and enjoy the day. Our Year 7’s

accepted the challenge, devoured the sausage sizzle and listened to many experts from our community. Coming home with show bags,

stickers, fake tattoos, safety messages and more importantly a good feeling of belonging to such a caring and friendly community.

One day our Year 7’s may be the volunteers, police officers, fire fighters, coast guards etc. that will be teaching and looking after the next

generation. A big thank you to everyone who made the day possible, we thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to attending next year.

Dukes Visit the Rochester CFA

O n Thursday 23rd August, the Dukes class visited the CFA. We were greeted by Vaughan, Brett and Hayley.

Brett told us what the CFA was about and what we were going to do. We then split into three groups. Vaughan took group 1 out the side of the station to look at the 4500 litre fire truck. He let us use the automatic hose and we were able to sit in the back and front of the fire truck. Brett then took group 2 to test out the hoses on the new truck from Ararat. This truck holds up to 2000 litres and another smaller truck holds up to 1000 litres.

Hayley arranged for group 3 to get dressed in CFA gear and she showed them around the meeting hall.

All three groups then were able to swap around. It was a fantastic day.

Year 9 Indonesian Class—Excursion to the Melbourne Zoo

L ast Friday, the Year 9 Indonesian students visited the Melbourne Zoo. It was part of their cultural and language studies on the topic of Wildlife. In groups, they happily went around videoing various animals, snapping photos and collecting information. As the day drew to a close, everyone went home tired but exhilarated.

Back at school, each group used the knowledge and experience gained, as well as the materials collected, to produce a documentary.

Year 10 Investigative Science Excursion

T his term the Year 10 Investigative Science students have been undertaking the Waste Pioneer Program. Veolia, a company in-volved in improving waste services to be more sustainable, in conjunction with Campaspe Shire, has been delivering information to the students about sustainability. Part of the program involved the students undertaking a tour of the MRF (Materials

Recovery Facility) in Echuca on Tuesday, where they learned about what can be recycled, how it is sorted and what it can be used for. As part of this program, the students designed a product using 1.25L PET bottles and created a ‘Pitch.’ The winning team, Jarrad Kyne and Jack Oogjes, presented their Pitch, ‘Blue Water Cases Save your Ocean, Save your Phone’ to the class and a judging panel, they will be judged along with other schools in the area and go in the running to win Veolia waste services for the school. The hope is that our students will bring their knowledge of recycling to the broader community and work towards being more sustainable and improving our environment. Alice Conway

CAMP AWAKENINGAKENING

M y time at Camp Awakenings was very short, but oh man, was it worth every minute. When we first got there, we were greeted by a room full of strangers and were put into one of five groups, Red, Orange, Blue, Yellow or Green, I was in Red. There were 10 people in my group. Later, we went in our groups to do activities. My group did crate stacking and bike riding. In crate stack-

ing you are harnessed up and must stack crate on top of crate without touching the ground or leaning on the rope. In bike riding we went through a bike track through the back of the camp. That night we did what the camp liked to call “The Winter Olympics”. This is where we did tug of war, trust exercises and other activities. By the end of the day we knew everyone in our groups and had become great friends.

The next day we were up and out of bed by 7am to do jumping jacks and other exercises to wake up. We then had to go for a run down by the lake to have “group time”. Group time is when you talk as a group and get to know each other better, we also get to talk about how were enjoying the camp so far. That day we had sessions with the leaders about their life stories and how it affected them. We also went canoeing. That night we did a range of different games from a treasure hunt to finding our way from point a to point b without being shot. That night my cabin was woken up to bob for apples and answer riddles. On the last day we said our goodbyes to our new friends and did a presentation for our families then went home. Camp Awakening was easily the best camp I’ve been to and if you ever get the chance I would strongly urge you to go.

On the 17th of August, my friend Chloe and I travelled with Mrs. Taylor to Cave Hill Creek, where Camp Awakenings was being held. Our trip with Mrs. Taylor was fairly long and we somehow managed to get lost in the middle of nowhere, where there was no sign of life. We ar-rived after the tiring 3 hour drive and were greeted kindly by the camp coordinators, Sandi and Micky. Chloe and I were absolutely petrified when we heard we were living with strangers wehad never met before. We were separated into groups of 10 or 11 and I was placed in the green team. At first it was nerve-racking because I knew nobody, but by the time we did the first activity, I was a lot more comfortable around my group.

Throughout the entire camp, we attended about five sessions that were about the CA teams’ personal lives. Some stories were happy mo-ments; hearing the funny side of people's’ lives, whereas some were dark moments; terrible and upsetting stages of people's’ lives. These stories were told to help us understand what we can do and how we can change our lives into a more enjoyable environment. We did sev-eral team building activities to get to know each other better. The activities consisted of canoeing, crate stacking, bike riding and dancing games. Each team also had their own team song and when your song came on, you needed to stand up and dance in front of everyone. If the CA team didn’t think your team danced enthusiastically enough, then they’d keep playing your song until you did.

Overall, this camp was an adventure of a lifetime and I was very grateful I was able to attend this life-changing camp because without doubt it pushed me out of my comfort zone. By the time we had to go back, our team had become a very close group, and we all became great friends. If I could, I would go to this amazing camp again in a heartbeat!

Also a big thank you so much to Mrs. Taylor for organising this amazing experience and driving us there at 8:00am. I would encourage next year’s Year 9s to attend this outstanding camp because it could definitely change your life!

Luke Kennedy - Motivational Speaker Presents at the College

A t Rochester Secondary College we are fortunate enough to be able to engage the services of guest speakers from time to time. The topics and themes that we target vary depending on the needs of our students at that particular time. Last week we wel-comed motivational speaker, Luke Kennedy to our school to address the students. Luke spoke to us about his life; the ups and

downs, the decisions he made and the consequences of those decisions; both good and bad. In particular, he spoke about how the nega-tive self-talk that we all do can have a detrimental effect on our self-esteem and the way we behave and treat ourselves and the people around us. Using his own personal experiences was extremely interesting and valuable for our students. While Luke’s story had a happy ending, he was very quick to point out that this is not always the case and that we need to think about the choices we make. His underly-ing message was to be true to yourself. Stop worrying about what others think about you and your decisions and focus on YOU. He also talked about the ‘mask’ that we all wear when we are around people and after hearing Luke speak, even I realised that I needed to shed my mask and be a little more ‘selfish’ at times.

Year 7, 9 and 10 Basketball at Echuca

O n 21st August the Year 7, 9, 10 boys and girls went to Echuca to play Interschool Basketball. The year 7 boys started out strong by winning their first game but unfortunately placed 4th at the end of the day. Best players for

Rochester were Charlie Palmer and Reed Hocking. While the Year 7 girls also came 4th. Best players were Ava Cottam and Summer Pain. Both of the Year 7 teams played to the best of their potential. Thank you to Miss McLeod for coaching both of the junior teams. Our Year 9 and 10 boys lost one game for the day and placed 3rd which is still an impressive effort. Jarrad Kyne, Nathan Kay and Grant Fuller. Thank you to Mr Liam Ringin for coaching. Year 9 and 10 girls were very successful finishing 1st on the day. Everyone played amazing but Charlee Patience, Annie Hughes and Ella Kerlin earned the best on. A huge thank you to Mr Liam Ringin for coaching these girls to a win. We are very proud and wish them the best of luck as they move onto the next level. Once again, a massive thank you to Miss McLeod, Mr Harris and Mr Ringin for coaching all the teams and help run the day. Great job year 7, 9 and 10s!

Congratulations Yazmin Hayes

C ongratulations to Yazmin Hayes of Year 10 on her amazing effort representing Rochester Secondary College in the National Cross Country Championships in Maleny Queensland last weekend. Yazmin was competing on our school’s behalf after being picked for the Victorian Team at All Schools

Victorian Championships in June. This is what her coach had to say: “15 year old YAZMIN competing in a field of 83 athletes in the under 18 Women's 4km event produced an excellent performance to finish in 12th place overall and the 8th placed Australian over the line and she was the equal fastest Victorian on the tough, hilly course alongside Melbourne athlete Sophie O'Sullivan the daughter of Olympic silver medallist Sonia O'Sullivan with a time of 15.24. Yazmin was also a member of the bronze medal winning Victorian team in the team section of the event and she was the 5th placed un-der 17 athlete in the field”. Well done Yazmin, the school is very proud of you. Congratulations also to Yolanda Foley and Charlee Roulston who made it through to the State Cross Country last month.

Rochester Ambassadors for vicSRC

O n Saturday 25th of August Seth McLure and I attended our first vicSRC Ambassadors meeting in Melbourne’s CBD. As Ambassadors for the Victorian Student Representative Council (vicSRC), we have two meetings per term, where we meet up

with other VicSRC Ambassadors and talk about what has been happening in our schools. We also work on issues that can affect our educa-tion and learning, in schools across Victoria. Seth and I had great fun working with all the other students. We are also looking forward to the next meeting, which will be held in the next school holidays By Casey Ryan

T his year our school Funday will be held on Friday 7th September, from 11am. There will be a wide range of activities organised by form groups and this is a great opportunity for families and friends to come along, grab a bite to eat and have some fun.

If you are part of a local business that might be prepared to support our students in this way, please reply to or pass on this letter. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.
