Definition of Holistic….

Dictionary.com, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/holistic

What does it mean to view your company holistically?

“Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts”

Page 5: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

5

You Need to View Your Company Holistically

How typical business owners concentrate:• Focus is on one area in business, main – sales• Other areas take the back seat• “Fires” take place• This affects all areas of business• You become reactive when you should be proactive

While “Fighting Fires” can happen from time to time, it should not be the way the company is run.

Page 6: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

6

Stop Fighting Fires

• Fires are caused by a lack of organization and planning ahead

• Fires are disruptive and costly to your company

• Fires create stress in the workplace which is the number one cause for employee turnover and excessive days off

Understanding Vision and its’ Importance To YOUR Company

9

Why is Vision Important?

As the owner, it is YOUR job to empower others to represent the company in the direction in which you want it to go - which is the vision. The vision is not broad, but instead is specific and obtainable.

The purpose of creating a company vision is to put a bulls-eye on the target in order for everyone to aim with accuracy.

Vision

What is Vision?

Vision is the destination of the business (serves as a guide for current and future courses of action)

Without a clearly defined vision the final destination cannot be obtained. Management and employees have to understand the vision in order for them to help you to reach your ultimate goal for the business. They assist you in implementing your strategic plan. Vision is the core of your strategic planning.

Vision Creation

As the business owner, it is YOUR job to create and communicate the company vision.

‘A leader needs to get comfortable, for example, with the idea that it is his or her role to develop a vision and communicate it. A clear vision is essential’. Susan Bates, Author of Motivate like a CEO

To motivate like a CEO is to connect people with purpose and passion toward a common goal.

Susan Bates.

14

Two Major Components of Vision Creation

The CoreWhat the company stands for and

why it exists:• Remains Constant (the driving

force of actions)• The purpose and values

The FutureWhat the company is to become in

the future:• Ever changing in order to

progress toward the goal• Vivid description of the

creation process with a time frame

• Inspires others to achievement

‘To pursue the vision means to create organizational and strategic alignment to preserve the core ideology and stimulate progress toward the envisioned future’ (Author of Built to Last, Jim Collins).

Page 15: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

15

Creation of Vision Through EvaluationCreating vision is a process and not an instant thought. It

takes time and evaluation to create. One must evaluate their product/services, the direction in

which they are passionately driven to pursue, and what needs they CAN and WILL meet.

Some create with the core in mind and some create with the future in mind. There is no right and wrong in vision evaluation as long as the passion for the end goal is REAL and not created just in words, but instead in actions.

Page 16: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

16

3 Examples of Vision

• Fred Smith, founder of Federal Express, had a vision that packages could be delivered around the United States by the next morning.

• Microsoft wanted to create beneficial software that would compel people to have a computer on every desk at work, home and school.

• Dominos wanted you to have hot, delicious pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less or it was free.

17

Vision Can be Felt as Well

When you have created a vision, articulated it to all within the company with clarity, and taken the action steps and processes needed to make it a reality….others can feel it.

‘When you have superb alignment, a visitor could drop into your organization from another planet and infer the vision without having to read it on paper’. Jim Collins, Author of Built to Last

Page 18: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

18

Maintaining Vision

Maintaining vision can be difficult as companies begin to morph and change… striving to meet future goals.

In order to maintain vision, leaders need to continue to make decisions based on the core and ensure all processes and decisions keep the core at the forefront.

Page 19: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

19

The Way to Maintain Vision

It is leadership’s responsibility to believe in the vision and instill passion that will motivate others to follow suit.

Leadership will be in charge of monitoring that the vision and passion is the leading factor within the company.

The way to maintain vision is to constantly monitor it. Ensuring that all objectives, milestones and strategies support the core vision.

Page 20: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

Milestones

Vision - Objectives – Milestones - Strategies

Strategies

Vision is the destination of the business

Objectives are longer term goals that translate the vision to the functional areas of the business (parts of the rocket)

Milestones are the stepping stones for each objective & are needed to determine what has to be done in each period to achieve the objectives

Strategy is the initiatives or the doing things that are needed to achieve the milestones

Failures in Vision Creationand Implementation

22

What Others Say about Implementation:

“…none of this matters without people executing on the creations built from the vision.” Chris Brogan, 2008

"Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion Clear visions have helped shape and propel impressive companies.” Jack Welsh, Former CEO of General Electric

“Passion for the vision is an essential element of an effective vision. It should be a source of inspiration to others.”Clifford Gray and Erik Larsen, Authors of Project Management; The Managerial Process

Page 23: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

23

Failures in Vision CreationTwo thirds of business owners that I have met and/or worked with

have had extreme difficulty in articulating their vision or are confused of the difference between the Visions Core and Future.

If owners cannot articulate their vision then how can others in the company help them achieve their goals?

Many company owners who do know their vision may only write them down in the form of a statement that is put away and never mirrored, monitored or implemented.

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare."  – Japanese proverb

Page 24: The ROCG New Normal Powerpoint

24

Implementing a Shared Vision

"One of the chief reasons for the failure of missions and visions to achieve the desired objective is the naiveté of most company managers and executives. Nothing happens by magic".

‘To be able to energize employees to work towards corporate objectives, visions and missions should be more than a sign on the wall. Executives and managers should live them, be seen living them, and constantly communicate them to their employees.’

J. Jennings and L. Haughton, Authors of Its not the Big that Eats the Small, It’s the Fast that Eats the Slow, obtained from www.1000ventures.com
