Festivals/Events: Best Dam Wine Walk

If you haven’t explored the Boulder City Historic District, go to the Best Dam Wine Walk. It is a great way to see it. You can taste a variety of wines, enjoy tasty appetizers and explore more than 20 shops, restaurants and businesses while strolling in the Historic District.

The Best Dam Wine Walk (BDWW) is held on the second Saturday of every month, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This month’s wine walk is Saturday, March 14. The cost is $25 per person, $5 off if you bring a previous BDWW wine glass. You must have ID and age verification to participate. You will receive a wristband and a BDWW wine glass. Check in is at Grace Christian Academy.

If you don’t drink wine, don’t worry. Not all locations serve wine. Some offer discounts, water and some offer pre-packaged snacks.

Each month has a special monthly theme and the March theme is “Steam Punk”. Participants are encouraged to dress up in the theme. Costumes are judged and this month’s theme judge is Flying Saucer 52. The winner is announced on facebook and the theme judge provides the prize.

Another prize is for an App/Map winner. The App/Map is a mobile phone friendly app that allows participants to “check in” at each stop by simply scanning the QR code. Everyone who registers their email address and checks in at each shop is eligible to win. The lucky winner receives two BDWW glasses at the next wine walk the winner attends.

Want to spend the night in Boulder City? Hoover Dam Lodge and Railroad Pass Casino have packages that include a night stay for two, two wine glasses to the event, a designated driver to and from the event and some offer a complimentary meal as well.

Cabbage & Smoked Sausage Grilled

Cabbage & Smoked Sausage Grill

Packets with Caraway

Ingredients12 ounces all-natural smoked sausage, sliced into ½-inch-thick rounds3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, di-vided 10 cups shredded red cabbage (1 medi-um head)1 large onion, sliced3 tablespoons red-wine vinegar 1 teaspoon caraway seeds¼ teaspoon pepper⅛ teaspoon salt

Preparation

Preheat grill to medium-high. Cut six 14 inch lengths of heavy-duty foil. Coat 1 side of each piece with cooking spray.

Stir Sausage and 1 tablespoon oil in a small bowl until evenly coated. Com-bine cabbage, onion, vinegar, caraway seeds, pepper, salt and the remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a large bowl; stir to coat thoroughly. Evenly divide the cab-bage mixture among the foil sheets, then top each with a portion of the sausage. Gather together the long ends of each foil piece, then fold up its open sides to form a packet.

Place the packets on the grill and cook until the vegetables are tender and lightly charred, about 20 minutes total.

In the Spotlight: Angela and Greg Lockwood

The Lockwood’s came here in 2019. They live in Bridge Landing. Greg went to San Jose College and has degrees in Education and Fire Sci-ence. He worked for the San Jose Fire Department for 27 years, 22 of those years as a Captain. One experience he had was saving an obese woman who was stuck in a tub. She had drained all the water, but now her skin was stuck to the sides of the tub. They had to pour cooking oil down each side and slowly free the skin to get her out.

Greg retired in 1995 spent his time traveling, snow skiing, water skiing, scuba diving, hiking and adrenaline sports. He still hikes regularly.Angela was born in the Philippines. She moved to the USA when she was seven. Her father was in the Air Force and she moved with him to many places before finally settling in Dallas, TX. She took Business Adminis-tration classes and got a job at Fiserv in online banking. She also was an Allstate claims representative. She is currently the Director of Sales and Marketing at Mesa Valley Estates Senior Living.

Angela’s most memorable vacation was when she went to Tahiti and swam with the sting rays. She loves wigs, shoes and hats.

They met online at a dating site. After some ups and downs they knew they had something going. Even though she was in Dallas and he was in San Jose they decided to get together. Greg bought her a ticket and waited for her at the airport but thought he missed her. When Angela came out, they knew on sight that they were made for each other. They got married in January 2019 in a Las Vegas chapel.

They came to Sun City Mesquite to start anew. They want to enjoy the lifestyle, finish furnishing their house and travel.

Spring arrives this month with a host of yard and garden tasks to address:

• Clean and sharpen your garden tools. • Finish pruning.• Deal with weeds now while the ground is still moist from winter rain. You can use a pre-emergent herbicide to keep the weed crop down. You water it in, and it keeps the seeds from sprouting. Deal with al ready sprouted weeds by spraying with a chemical weed killer or pull weeds by hand. Working in small portions, weeding can be a contem plative practice. • Spray your fruit trees, roses, and other ornamental trees and shrubs with a horticultural oil to smother overwintering insects and their eggs. Neglecting this chore can lead to a less than bountiful fruit har vest and unattractive roses. • Fertilize your landscape plants with an all-purpose fertilizer or better yet dig compost into the soil at the base of the plants. Some gardeners use a “yard feeder” that is connected to the irrigation system by way of a small subterranean tank. The tank is periodically filled with liquid fertilizer and dis tributes nutrients during the irrigation process. • Now is a good time to plant trees and shrubs. • Vegetable starts are available in the nursery for transplanting in a raised bed. It’s too early for tomatoes and peppers, but leafy greens can be planted now and harvested before the intense heat of summer. Even if you don’t have a personal interest in gardening, it’s important to know the basics, so that you can properly di-rect and supervise your hired yard maintenance company. It’s helpful to make a list of chores for the crew and actively direct their work. This methodology ensures that your wishes are carried out and the “blow and go” philosophy of yard maintenance is not the final product. Finally sit back, relax and enjoy the “fruits” of your labor – a beautiful, colorful yard and an edible garden.

Hi everyone!

Most of our community rules and the CC&R’s are based on basic common sense. However, there are times that it seems difficult to make this point to our homeowners. At the last Coffee Chat, three items were bought to the attention of all that attended. These items included trash cans, RV/oversize parking and garage doors.

As a good neighbor, it is important to use good sense regarding all of these concerns. No one wants to look at your trash can out on the side of your house. We all wish to see our neighborhood looking tidy so take your trash can in as soon as possible.

The HOA has painted a yellow line in front of all mailboxes as a reminder that you should not park there at any time. If anyone parks by the mailbox, no mail will be delivered for that area. There have been several times that this problem has occurred which included RV’s. Note that there is a time limit on RV parking for a total of 24 hours in 7 days. Please be the good neighbor and follow this rule.

For your safety, close your garage door if you are not working around the house or leaving for an appointment. It has happen in our community that homes that had their garage door open have lost items including their car. Going back to common sense - do the right thing for yourself and your neighborhood.

In 2014 Dr. Selmer Spitzer saw that there were a number of talented musicians from Moapa Val-ley, Virgin Valley, Southern Utah and Las Vegas and decided that these talented musicians may be interested in forming an all-volunteer 501(c)3, first-class organization known as the Southern Nevada Symphony Orchestra.

Their first concert on November 22, 2014, was a huge hit and sold out the Mesquite Community Theatre. The response was so great that Dr. Spitzer and the board moved future concerts to the CasaBlanca showroom, which can seat up to 500 concert goers, in order to accommodate the large crowds. Since the beginning of their performances at the CasaBlanca, it has been unusual for the showroom to not be sold out.

At the orchestra’s core are 70 plus professional musicians, retired musicians and school age talent-ed musicians. Many of the performers, including esteemed educators, perform in other local and professional productions in the local communities and professional productions in Las Vegas and St. George.

It has been said that the symphony orchestra of a community “is the measuring stick of civic achievement.” Along with good schools, churches, libraries and other cultural components of the local area, the symphony is another significant aspect of our cultural structure. It is tied to eco-nomic and industrial development as tightly as all the other cultural advantages citizens seek in their area.

In addition to performing, the Board of Directors Scholarship Committee awards a $1,000 schol-arship to a deserving student each year.

The next concert will be on April 11, 2020 at the CasaBlanca Show-room. Be sure to purchase your tickets early as it will surely sell out.

Tickets are available and on sale three to four weeks prior to each concert at the CasaBlanca Resort ticket office.

Have you ever searched for your ancestors or wondered how you came to be where you are? Are you related to any famous people? Did any of your grandfathers fight in any wars? Maybe one of your ancestors fought in the Revolu-tionary war or the Civil War. Do you have any ancestors who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620?These and many other questions might be answered by digging through those old family records you inherited long ago. Maybe some answers are found in your old family bible or in that old trunk you have that used to belong to a great aunt that you never met.The Ancestor Hunters Genealogy Club may also help you find the answers to your questions. The regular meetings are held on the first Saturday of five months (September, November, January, March, and May) at the Pioneer Cen-ter from 10 a.m. to Noon. However, the “regular” meetings are changed occasionally to accommodate other events. For example, the March meeting has been moved to March 21st in order for the members to attend the Mesquite Family Discovery Day celebration at the Family History Center at 100 N. Service, therapy, and emotional support animals have become indispensable to man. Many people use these terms interchange-ably although there are distinct differences among them.

A service animal is specifically trained to perform particular life functions for a person with physical or severe psychiatric disabilities. This includes seeing eyes for the blind, hearing for the deaf, detecting and alerting for seizures, and assisting in mo-bility.

Because rigorous training is required, these animals must be certified and registered. They are granted rights of entry by law (the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA) to otherwise “no animals allowed” areas. While most service animals are dogs, other animals may fill the role; e.g. Capuchin monkeys are trained to assist paralyzed individuals with their daily tasks. A therapy animal is an animal trained to provide comfort to people facing some significant life event. Their functions include visiting nursing homes and hospitals, traveling to areas after a natural disaster, or calming children as they appear in court.

Therapy animals can be almost any species, such as cats, birds, horses, etc. Trained and certified, they and their volunteer handlers are allowed entry to areas in connection with specific social programs. Federal law does not legally protect therapy animals, though some states have protections and rights in place for them.

An emotional support animal (ESA) is any pet that is part of its owner’s psychological treatment plan as prescribed by a licensed mental health professional. They may be used for treatment of depression, anxiety, or phobias. Although these pets help a specific per-son, they do not go through any special training or certification.

Unlike service and therapy animals, businesses are not required by law to allow an ESA inside its facilities. However, they may receive certain housing rights and access to flights on airlines (for now).

Board of Directors Column

The renovation of the twelve year old Pioneer Center is just around the corner! There will be the color board and plans available for all our homeowners to see. The Coffee Chat on Friday, March 5 either at 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. will be mainly devoted to this project. Look for update in the Pioneer Press and the SCM website. Remember that this renovation has been well planned and is part of the reserves budget. Therefore, this improvement will not have an effect on our assessments. Our homeowner Financial Committee has reviewed the overall analysis of this project. Additionally, our homeowners have had input in the fitness reconfiguration, outdoor seating and the conversational areas. The overall plan will continue the western theme but will add more color and a modern look for some areas. Extra additions will include a completely redone coffee bar area with an added TV, improved flow in the fitness area, individual carpets for each area plus more. Our staff will have more office space and storage. A video monitor that will show upcoming events will be added. This project has been driven by a professional interior design individual who has worked on our behalf to improve our ‘gem’ of SCM which is the Pioneer Center. This company, studio4 interiors has been a wonderful group to work with during this process. The proposed time line has millwork starting in April. Painting is scheduled for May followed with flooring in July. The final part of the project which is new furniture is planned for August. As areas are impacted by this schedule, homeowners will receive notices of closures as needed. Efforts will be made to keep the closures of areas as short as possible so that our homeowners can continue to enjoy the Pioneer Center. Looking forward to change, we will soon have the new check in option at the front desk. Homeowners will have the ability to do it ourselves for multiple activities. Also the new traffic study will be sent to the City of Mesquite for their consideration. Hopefully, this study will bring us closer to a ‘smart light’ at the busy intersection of Falcon Ridge Parkway and Flat Top Mesa in our community. Next Board of Directors meeting is Tuesday, April 14 at 1 p.m. This meeting will include the final finance side as well as planning of the upcoming renovation project. Next Coffee Chat will be Friday, March 6 as noted above. Join me to discuss not only the renovation project but other concerns of our HOA.
