The Roaring Lion The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy? Amos 3:8 Ladies’ Aid Next Meeting: March 9 - meet at Church at 11:00am to carpool to Anniversary Dinner Flowers: Jean Pieper Hostess: Restarurant TBA Visiting: Cynthia Roley Project: $70 for Blessing Bags The following article was included with the introductory materials for our Lenten Series. God bless you this season of preparation as we turn our hearts and minds toward Christ, who presents Himself to us in His Body and Blood in the Sacrament that we may receive Him as our Salutary Gift. The chief blessing of the Lord’s Supper is made clear by the words of Christ’s institution: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” The forgiveness of sins, won for us on Calvary and offered in the Sacrament of our Lord’s body and blood truly makes this blessed Supper a “salutary gift” (Post-Communion Collect). While the chief blessing and benefit of the Lord’s Supper is the forgive- ness of sins, there are several different images and meta- phors used by Holy Scripture to highlight the blessings of the Lord’s Supper, many of which are reflected in our hymns. Consider the following examples: In Stephen Starke’s hymn “The Tree of Life,” the Lord’s crucified body and blood are depicted as a life-giving fruit that flows from the tree of the cross. “For all who trust and will believe, Salvation’s living fruit receive. And of this fruit so pure and sweet The Lord invites the world to eat, To find within this cross of wood The tree of life with ev’ry good” (LSB 561:4). This fruit is contrasted with the fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden, bringing the world into sin and ruin. For the sacramentally minded Christian, it is not difficult to connect this “pure and sweet” fruit with what is received, eaten, and drunk in Holy Communion. Another benefit of the Lord’s Supper is its nourishing power. Martin Luther in the Large Catechism calls the Lord’s Supper a “food of souls, which nourishes and strengthens the new man” (Part 5, par. 23). For this rea- son, several hymns appropriately refer to the Lord’s Sup- per as “bread from heaven” or “living bread.” Stanza 1 of LSB hymn 625 naturally reflects this: “Lord Jesus Christ, life-giving bread, May I in grace possess You. Let me with holy food be fed, In hunger I address You.” These words remind the communicant who hungers and thirsts for righteousness (cf. Matthew 5:6) that God has lovingly prepared for him in the Sacrament a nourishing meal to strengthen him in his lifelong journey towards the prom- ised land of heaven. Drawing upon the scriptural themes of healing, some of our hymns depict the Lord’s Supper as a healing balm or medicine. A classic example of this is David W. Rogner’s hymn “Jesus Comes Today With Healing” (LSB 620). Stanza one emphasizes the healing benefits of Christ’s body and blood: “Jesus comes today with healing, Knocking at my door, appealing, Off’ring pardon, grace, and peace. He Himself makes preparation, And I hear His invitation: “Come and taste the blessed feast.” Christians who are suffering from bodily ailments may take comfort in considering the Lord’s Supper as a healing medicine, seeing that the complete healing of their bodies in the res- urrection begins now with the healing of the soul in the Sacrament of the Altar. More examples will be developed throughout the course of this Lenten series. The goal of this series is to set before our eyes the many blessings and benefits of the Lord’s Supper, chief among which is the forgiveness of sins. Our hymns help us in this regard by making connec- tions that we might not otherwise make. They draw upon the themes of Holy Scripture and teach us to appreciate the full range of blessings that are present when the faith- ful are gathered around the life-giving, nourishing, and salutary gift of our Lord’s holy body and precious blood. The following article was included with the introductory materials for our Lenten Series. God bless you this season of preparation as we turn our hearts and minds toward Christ, who presents Himself to us in His Body and Blood in the Sacrament that we may receive Him as our Salutary Gift. The chief blessing of the Lord’s Supper is made clear

by the words of Christ’s institution: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” The forgiveness of sins, won for us on Calvary and offered in the Sacrament of our Lord’s body and blood truly makes this blessed Supper a “salutary gift” (Post-Communion Collect). While the chief blessing and benefit of the Lord’s Supper is the forgive-ness of sins, there are several different images and meta-phors used by Holy Scripture to highlight the blessings of the Lord’s Supper, many of which are reflected in our hymns.

23). For this rea-son, several hymns appropriately refer to the Lord’s Sup-

per as “bread from heaven” or “living bread.” Stanza 1 of LSB hymn 625 naturally reflects this: “Lord Jesus Christ, life-giving bread, May I in grace possess You. Let me with holy food be fed, In hunger I address You.” These words remind the communicant who hungers and thirsts for righteousness (cf. Matthew 5:6) that God has lovingly prepared for him in the Sacrament a nourishing meal to strengthen him in his lifelong journey towards the prom-ised land of heaven.

March 7 Perpetua and Felicitas, Martyrs At the beginning of the third century, the Roman emperor Septimus

Severus forbade conversions to Christianity. Among those disobey-ing that edict were Perpetua, a young noblewoman, and her maid-servant Felicitas. Both were jailed at Carthage in North Africa along with three fellow Christians. During their imprisonment, Perpetua and Felicitas witnessed to their faith with such conviction that the officer in charge became a follower of Jesus. After making arrange-ments for the well-being of their children, Perpetua and Felicitas were executed on March 7, 203. Tradition holds that Perpetua showed mercy to her captors by falling on a sword because they could not bear to put her to death. The story of this martyrdom has been told ever since as an encouragement to persecuted Christians.

March 17 Patrick, Missionary to Ireland Patrick is one of the best-known of the missionary saints. Born to a

Christian family in Britain around the year 389, he was captured as a teenager by raiders, taken to Ireland, and forced to serve as a herdsman. After six years he escaped and found his way to a monas-tery community in France. Ordained a bishop in 432, he made his way back to Ireland, where he spent the rest of his long life spread-ing the Gospel and organizing Christian communities. He strongly defended the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in a time when it was not popular to do so. His literary legacy includes his autobiography, Confessio, and several prayers and hymns still used in the church today. Patrick died around the year 466.

March 31 Joseph, Patriarch Joseph was the son of the patriarch Jacob (February 5) and Rachel.

The favorite son of his father, he incurred the jealousy of his older brothers, who sold him into slavery in Egypt and told their father he was dead (Genesis 37). In Egypt he became the chief servant in the home of Potiphar, a military official. Because Joseph refused to commit adultery with his master's wife, he was unjustly accused of attempted rape and thrown into jail (Genesis 39). Years later, he in-terpreted dreams for Pharoah, who then freed him from prison and placed him in charge of the entire country. When his brothers came from Canaan to Egypt in search of food, they did not recognize him. He eventually revealed his identity to them, forgave them, and in-vited both them and his father to live in Egypt. He is especially re-membered and honored for his moral uprightness (Genesis 39) and for his willingness to forgive his brothers (Genesis 45 and 50).

Individual Confession and Absolution As we complete our journey through the season of Lent, remembering our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection for us, it is fitting that we ask Him for the result of that work - the forgiveness of our sins. The Lord has provided opportunity for us to hear those words spoken directly to us and over those sins “which we know and feel in our heart,” as the Small Cate-chism reminds us. The Rite of Individual Confession and Absolution from our Lutheran Ser-vice Book is reprinted below.

God bless you as you prepare to meet our Resurrected and Forgiving Lord.

As always, Pastor is available for individual confession and absolution by appointment.

Order of Individual Confession and Absolution [from LSB pp. 292f.]

You may prepare yourself by meditating on the Ten Commandments (LSB pages 321–322). You may also pray the penitential psalms (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, or 143). If you are not burdened with particular sins, do not trouble yourself or search for or invent other sins, thereby turn-ing confession into a torture. Instead, mention one or two sins that you know and let that be enough.

When you are ready, kneel and say:

Pastor, please hear my confession and pro-nounce forgiveness in order to fulfill God's will. Proceed. I, a poor sinner, plead guilty before God of all sins. I have lived as if God did not matter and as if I mattered most. My Lord's name I have not honored as I should; my worship and prayers have faltered. I have not let His love have its way with me, and so my love for oth-ers has failed. There are those whom I have hurt, and those whom I have failed to help. My thoughts and desires have been soiled with sin. If you wish to confess specific sins that trouble you, con-tinue as follows:

What troubles me particularly is that . . . Confess whatever you have done against the command-ments of God, according to your own place in life. The pastor may gently question or instruct you—not to pry or judge—but to assist in self-examination. Then conclude by saying:

I am sorry for all of this and ask for grace. I want to do better.

God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. Amen. Do you believe that my forgiveness is God's for-giveness? Yes. Let it be done for you as you believe. The pastor places his hands on the head of the penitent and says:

In the stead and by the command of my Lord Je-sus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The pastor may speak additional Scripture passages to comfort and strengthen the faith of those who have great burdens of conscience or are sorrowful and distressed. The pastor concludes:

Go in peace. Amen. You may remain to say a prayer of thanksgiving. Psalms 30, 31, 32, 34, 103, or 118 are also appropriate.

Opening Thoughts: “Greater love has no man than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” St. John 15:13. Love undergirds the foundation of the family. This basic institution is created in love. Parents do what they do for their children motivated by compassion. Without love there is dysfunction. Brigade buddies slopping about in foxholes develop a closeness based on the philosophy that they each have each other’s backs. A grenade smothered to save the lives of others in the closeness of the trench is a very human picture of the ultimate price paid for the sparing one’s friends. Saintly sacrifice is seen when one steps out as substitute – the innocent in the place of the guilty – to suffer in their place. There are times of persecution when one saves another while succumbing themselves to the stipulated punishment. By far, the higher, greater love is found in none other than our Savior, Jesus. What He has done revealed the huge heart of our heavenly Father for every person in the world. Jesus’ sacrifice established justice for all oppressed by sin. Jesus’ love is example. Jesus’ love is redeeming. It is our foundation for time and eternity. “Faith, hope, love endure, but the greatest is” Jesus’ love for us!

The Rev. Mark A. Miller, CID President January Board of Directors Report Meeting opened with devotion by Rev Kent Tibben. Minutes of the November 2016 meeting were approved. President’s Report: Pres. Miller noted there are 20 vacancies in the CID, 4-5 being permanent vacancies. He continues to guide congregations in the call process. Only 94 graduates are available from the seminaries. Various activities are on his schedule as always. There is less support coming from our congregations, our budget process will deal with this. District congregations are at the 70% level for submitting statistical reports. Lack of interest in district work is a concern.

Remember God’s work through theological education in Asia as you pray:

THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN ASIA — MARCH 1–15 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) has been working in Asia since sending its first missionary to India in 1895. Today, the Asia region is home to both well-established Lutheran churches and fledgling Lutheran groups — all of which are hungry for solid, distinctively Lutheran instruction. At their request, the LCMS continues to assist them in various ways with theological education.

21. for the Rev. Shin Shimizu, presi-dent of the JLC, and the rest of the JLC’s leadership, that the Lord would equip them with wisdom and insight to deal with the struggles and trials of church administration.

22. for the pastors of the JLC as they proclaim the Gospel, that the Lord would grant them fidelity to the Word of God and a bold confession of the Christian faith.

23. for the members of the JLC, that God would use them to serve their neighbor and to share the message of the forgiveness and love Christ bestowed on them.

24. for the teachers and educators of the JLC, that God would enable them to rightly apply Law and Gospel to equip students both to share the good new of salvation and to serve their neighbors.

25. for the JLC’s Sunday schools, that God would use those opportunities to nurture His little lambs and prepare them to grow into full maturity in the faith.

26. for the congregations of the JLC, that our Lord would keep and preserve them through His Word and Sacraments, so that all who receive them would be strengthened unto eternal life.

28. for the young people of the JLC, that God would use their youthful zeal to spread the message of Christ’s love to all those in Japan.

29. for all those who bear the name of Christ in Japan, that God would grant them a holy desire to share the love of Christ with those who do not yet belong to the kingdom.

30. for the Word of God in Japan, that it might have free course and be preached for the joy and edification of Christ’s holy people.

31. for the leaders of Japan, that God would use them to keep and preserve peace and harmony, both domestically and abroad, so that the Gospel might be shared and God’s people preserved from all persecu-tion and harm.

Kacey Miller’s love for her son is evident in every word. “Being a mom has changed me in so many unexplainable ways. Life is no longer about me,” she notes. “It’s about Leo: his safety, his happiness, his wellbeing. Having a little one rely on you 24/7 is the most difficult thing I have ever experienced, yet the most rewarding.”

Kacey, a single mom, is speaking up. By sharing her story through the #eyesoflife campaign, she is giving voice to what millions of others believe as well: that all life, from conception to natural death, is sacred, valued and a gift from God.

She loves exploring, her family, art, adventure, teaching students and church. And when, while studying math at Concordia University Texas, Austin, Texas, she found herself pregnant, she also chose life for her baby, despite being encouraged to abort her son. “I would have never guessed that at 23 years old, my life would look like it does,” she says. “My whole world was turned on June 3, 2015, when Leo was born, and my life will never be the same!”

“I remember bringing Leo home as a newborn,” she recalls. “He cried so much, and sometimes the only thing I could do was cry with him. As a parent, you want to meet your child’s every need, and sometimes you fail. I’ve learned what that failure looks like, but I’ve learned how to accept it and do my best regardless. I think that can apply to many other situations in life too. We just fall short!”

But Kacey’s simultaneously seen firsthand that the Lord works even those struggles and suffering for good. “I now have so many people around me, supporting me, helping me, uplifting me, and I do not go a day alone,” she explains. “God works through means, and all of these people prove that!”

Little Leo, meanwhile, is thriving. He “loves to read his books and play with his cars … Since I’m a math lover, we’ve been working on our geometry; he already knows

what a triangle is!” she says proudly. God “placed Leo in my life for me to take care of, and right in front of my eyes, Leo has grown and will continue to go grow from a child of God to a man of God.”

Being Leo’s mom, she believes, has given her eyes of life. “I remember a dark time with no hope, no happiness and no strength,” she recalls. “The only things I saw were the difficulties that lie ahead. I easily beat myself down over my sin, thinking my parents will disown me and everyone will think poorly of me.”

But God, in His mercy, caused something quite different and unexpected to happen. “My family welcomed me home, my loved ones surrounded me and they all forgave me,” she says. “They reminded me of the hope and redemption found in Christ.”

“I remember a lady at church saying, ‘What the devil meant for evil, God has turned into a beautiful blessing,’” she reflects. “Now I get to enjoy that blessing, and [Leo] adds so much joy to my life, my family’s life and really anyone he meets. He gives us all eyes of life!”

Ever the teacher, Kacey is already telling her young son about God’s grace and mercy in his own life. “Teaching Leo about Christ’s death on the cross allows him to see the value and worth in every person,” she says. “We are all worthy enough for God to sacrifice His only Son to die for us … By treating Leo and others as valuable, he will learn to view and treat others that way …When others do wrong and we want to think lowly of them, I have to teach Leo that we shouldn’t, because we all sin, and that’s exactly why we need Christ in our life.”

An encouragement and example to any single mom, Kacey Miller has eyes of life, proof that the Lord’s ways are perfect and best, even when they may not feel or seem like it. “My comfort, hope and happiness are found in Christ,” she says joyfully and confidently, “and I pray every day that the Holy Spirit will work in Leo like it has in me.”

Kacey Meet Kacey, a single mom who chose life for her unborn son, Leo, now a joyful toddler who reminds her each day of the “hope and redemption found in Christ.”

Sleepy baby blinks and cheeky, toothless grins: They’re the stuff Milwaukee-based A Place of Refuge Ministries is made of. Here, expectant mothers in crisis situations catch their breath, are shown mercy and love, and plot a healthy, safe way forward both for themselves and their children. Meet Tiffany, Trish and Ronne. Together, they’re speaking up. By sharing their stories through the #eyesoflife campaign, they are giving voice to what millions of others believe as well: that all life, from conception to natural death, is sacred, valued and a gift from God. At A Place of Refuge Ministries, “we offer the women and children we serve the Good News of Jesus Christ and the blessings of God’s Word and Sacrament,” explains Trish Kagerbauer, development director. “We know that the Holy Spirit has the power to heal those broken hearted by relationships … [or] held captive by the guilt and shame of abortion.” And heal He does. Ronne Murray, house manager, has been privileged to see similar situations. When a mother considering abortion called the ministry’s

hotline, Ronne invited her to stay at the Refuge House and encouraged the woman to “see her little girl as a person and that she was a blessing from God,” she recalls, rather than an inconvenience or a lump of tissue. Through prayer and over time, Ronne watched the mother’s heart soften until she could see “her unborn child through the eyes of God and a mother,” ultimately choosing to save her child’s life. The work isn’t always easy. Baby blinks and smiles don’t serve as magic wands to erase pain and guilt. But working with moms in tough situations has caused Trish to see things through a fresh set of eyes, witnessing “the courage and resilience of these mothers, who are willing to choose life for their babies in the most difficult of circumstances.” Tiffany, Ronne and Trish are speaking up for life, for babies, for caring for one another in the midst of immense fear and great suffering. And as they do, Trish says, “We are filled with joy when the women we work with can look at themselves through the eyes of Jesus, the Lord of life.” As for Tiffany, she knows it firsthand: “God is always with me.”

Tiffany Meet Tiffany and others from A Place of Refuge Ministries who remind women in crisis pregnancy situations that, as Tiffany knows, “there is hope.”

The Askins in Asia

In the one year lectionary, this coming Sunday is the Transfiguration of our Lord (Matthew 17:1–9). Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and was transfigured before them. The sight overwhelmed the three. Peter says, “Lord, let us build three tents,” for Moses and Elijah had appeared talking with Jesus.

Peter longed to remain in the presence of Christ’s glory. Undoubtedly, the sight was glorious. If Peter would have built the three tents to preserve that glory, the nations would have come to see it. Then, at least in Peter’s thinking, maybe the nations would respect Israel again.

But our Lord did not come to accumulate earthly glory, to show off what He had so carefully hidden during His days on earth. Jesus told the apostles not to say anything until after His resurrection. The Transfiguration could not be understood apart from His death and resurrection.

It was not until Peter looked back on the experience years later that he realized his mistake. He wrote in his second epistle that we have something more certain than a fleeting vision of Christ’s glory: the confirmed Word of God.

For thus God said to the three apostles on the mountain, “This is My Beloved Son . . . listen to Him.”

And thus also God speaks to us. Do not look with eyes to see visions of glory; He does not promise us those things which the eyes long to see. He does not promise us church buildings filled with members or visions of His glory.

He does offer us promises in His Word, however; promises to which we do well to listen. He promises us forgiveness wherever two or three are gathered in His name.

He promises new life wherever His Word is preached, wherever Baptism is offered, and the Lord’s Supper is administered according to His command.

So may we learn to listen to Him. Let us listen to what He says in His Word and through His called and ordained preachers. Let us receive what He has given, trusting not in visions of glory, but in Word of truth which we have received.

For we will one day see this Beloved Son of God, because we listened to Him as He revealed Himself in His Word.

Happy New Year —By Eliza The beginning of the month was the western New Year that we are accustomed to celebrating.  I remember staying up late, tooting horns, watching the ball drop on television, popping or tossing streamers on a tree covered in balloons, and finally removing those balloons to pop in any number of creative ways.

It was a new start, a fresh beginning.  It was goodbye to the old, worn, tiredness of the previous year.  It was joy and celebration of what was and what was to come.   Now we celebrate a second new year living in Hong Kong.  Chinese New Year was just days after we arrived last year.  This year it is the end of January just days before our one year anniversary of being on the field.

It is red envelopes, decorations, five generation plants, orange fruits, roosters, dragons, Kung Fu, and more.  It is a time to celebrate and be with family.  It is a chance to learn about the culture and the people.  It is an opportunity to live our faith trusting in the one true God where many gods and ancestral spirits are worshipped. For us, many things will remain the same in the new year.  We’ve celebrated each member of the family’s birthday here at least once. We’ve adjusted to a newborn. We’ve made new friends and met other missionaries from around the region and plan to continue gathering together. We are finding the balance of travel, school, home, and play.

But in the new year, new things will come also. We will start learning a new language. We hope that will open other new doors of meeting people and sharing the gospel in Hong Kong and Asia.

The Lord will also provide other new opportunities as well. We wait with patience to see what He reveals.

✠ Soli Deo Gloria ✠

For Your Prayers

In your prayers, please keep these things in mind:

For missionaries still building support networks

In thanksgiving for the opportunity to gather with fellow missionaries to be fed and renewed

For all those Christians throughout Asia celebrating the Chinese New Year

For the Church, that we might remain ever vigilant to preserve the means of grace, pure and unadulterated

For the Asia region as the search continues for a regional director and regional business manager

Thank You

To all of you who are supporting us in so many and various ways, thank you.

For your prayers, thank you. For your financial support, thank you. For your notes and thoughts, thank you.

A Year in Review — by Rev. Roy S. Askins

February third marks the one year anniversary of our arrival in Hong Kong. As I look back on the last year, I continue to marvel at the opportunities God has given me since then, opportunities to see and support the work of His Church in Asia. While I have supported various partner churches by helping build websites and record podcasts to share the Gospel in the language of the people, what I particularly recall are the opportunities God has given me to see the work of His Church throughout Asia. In April of last year, I traveled to Sri Lanka to see and record the work of the Lanka Lutherans. I met with their pastors and vicars, and told their story for Lutherans Engage the World. Despite their struggles,

God continues to proclaim the Gospel of forgiveness to the men and women of the Lanka Lutheran Church. Here recently, through the work of missionaries like Rev. Roger James and Rev. Dr. Edward Naumann, even more opportunities have risen to see how Christ is working through education to prepare men for the office of preaching and teaching. Also last year, I attended the synode convention of the GKLI (Indonesian Christian Lutheran Church). I met a number of church leaders and people of the GKLI, and learned about opportunities to support their work, primarily through providing assistance to the translation process. I also traveled to Bangladesh. The pastor, deacons, and evangelists of the Bangladesh Lutheran Church Mission welcomed and hosted us. We learned of their bold confession, and assisted them in a number of ways. You can read about it all on blogs.lcms.org. First, I thank the Lord for sending me to do this work, to assist and help His church proclaim the Gospel throughout the world. Secondly, I recognize that He provided this opportunity through you, those who have chosen to support us by partnering with The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to send us. So, what else can be said except, “Thank You.” We give thanks to God for all of you.
