THE ROAD TO HEALTH . . .

Using The Clark Method Newsletter by Bonnie O’Sullivan March/April 2002 Number 44

Dear Friends,

Dr. Clark’s Clinic has a New Phone Number Dr. Clark is doing what she loves best — research. Her updated HIV/AIDS book has not been completed at this time (June 28, 2002), but it will be available in the near future. Dr. Clark’s Century Nutrition Clinic in Mexico is open, but the phone number has changed. The new number is 011-52-664-682-8215, fax 011-52-664-683-4454, when calling from the U.S.

Update on Sandy Petry, Bonnie’s daughter: Thank you for the often-asked question, “How is Sandy?” She is doing much better now, but she went through a very bad time for six weeks between April and May. That’s when I drove her to the Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic in Kentucky. (Their Web Site address is: http://www.foxhollow.com/home.htm — excerpts are on page 8 of this newsletter.)

Sandy was diagnosed last year with osteomyelitis of the jawbone, which means infection of the bone marrow of the jawbone. All of her teeth were extracted by December 31, 2001, but because of constant pain in her jawbone her dentist performed numerous curettage surgeries (i.e., the scraping of infected bone from her jawbone).

By April 10th Sandy’s dentist thought he had finally removed the last of the bone infection. However, a few days later she developed acute pain in her upper jawbone just under her left nostril (she had had a dull pain there since her left upper front tooth was extracted in September, but the dentist thought it was “referral pain” from a sinus or ear

infection). Then, because of the pain she felt when he gave her a shot to anesthetize the area, he decided it was time to refer her to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

When she met the surgeon on April 15th he explained that he is also an anesthesiologist and suggested that Sandy be asleep when he performed the surgery. This was agreed upon but, when he began the surgery on April 18th, the pain was so intense that it woke her up. Eventually he gave her enough medication to put seven adults to sleep and had to tell her (when she still kept waking up and trying to remove his hands from her mouth) that unless she allowed him to continue, he would not be able to complete the surgical procedure. Even in her extremely medicated state she knew she wanted the surgery and agreed to control her reaction to the pain, which she did.

The surgery was successful in several areas where he removed infected bone from her jawbone, but not in the area under her left nostril. The pain in that area became worse over the next few days and when she spoke to the surgeon about it he thought she should give it more time to heal. When it became even more painful she called him again on April 25th and he told her he was booked solid for the next month and could not fit her in until then.

After thinking over her situation, Sandy decided that she should make an appointment with Dr. Benjamin Aréchiga in Tijuana, Mexico [his telephone number, from the U.S. is, 011 52 (664) 682-9464]. He is the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends. The reason Sandy didn’t go to him before is that we had heard the process of getting back into the U.S. was very stressful since September 11th and she felt too sick to deal with it. Dr. Aréchiga’s receptionist made an appointment for Sandy to see him the following Monday and for surgery on Tuesday. We left for Mexico on April 27, 2001. We stayed at the Best Western motel in San Ysidro, CA, telephone number, (619) 428-5521, which is only three miles from the entrance into Mexico, and we hired a taxi service, Taxi Internatcional, telephone number, (619) 421-7234, to take us to and from Mexico. We only had one delay when the cab was sent through customs for a “more thorough” search on the 2nd trip back to the U.S.

During this time Sandy had pain throughout her body (this pain was why she felt she was dying and came to live with us in May 2001). At times the pain migrated from her back to her side and/or from an arm to a leg, but the pain in her heart and liver remained constant. Her body was very swollen, and her breasts hurt constantly, as though they were bruised.

At Sandy’s first appointment with Dr. Aréchiga, he explained that he would be using a surgical procedure called the “flap method.” He makes a horizontal incision in the gum tissue across the jawbone from one side to the other. Then he makes a vertical incision on each side and raises the flap to expose the whole jawbone. He then, using a drill and Dr. Clark’s dental bleach as the irrigation solution, removes bone that looks abnormal. He stated that this method is the only method that he recommends in osteomyelitis of the jawbone. With a mirror allowing Sandy to see where he was pointing on her gums, and while I also looked at her gums, he showed us that none of the previous surgeries Sandy had had were done using

this method. Finally, he asked whether Sandy wanted to be put to sleep or have a local anesthetic. Sandy chose the local anesthetic.

The next day was April 30th and the day of her surgery. During the surgery, Dr. Aréchiga found a huge abscess on Sandy’s upper front jawbone that extended far up to just under her left nostril. He removed it and scraped the jawbone down to smooth, healthy bone. (In the future, if Sandy needs another curettage surgery, she will go to Dr. Aréchiga.)

After the surgery Dr. Aréchiga gave Sandy instructions on dental aftercare that can be found in Dr. Clark’s books. One of the things Sandy began to do that she had not done previously was to put DMSO on her gums (she dipped a Q-tip into the DMSO liquid and rubbed it over her gums). This helped her manage the pain until the stitches were removed.

There were some healing pains in her jawbones after that, but they were tolerable. However, the “bruised-like” pain she had throughout her body and especially in her breasts became worse. We were expecting the pain and swelling in her body to disappear when her jawbones were free of infection, but now she could barely move because of the pain.

A friend told Sandy about “Peter,” a Biological Medicine Practitioner who had helped one friend recover from cancer and another from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Hoping that he could help her as well, Sandy scheduled an appointment with him.

Her appointment was on May 9, 2002. After Peter confirmed, with his dermatron device, which is connected to a computer, the results of Sandy’s bone culture diagnosis from the Washington Hospital Microbiology laboratory that said her bone marrow was infected with staph, he recommended a Homeopathic remedy for staph infection. Peter instructed her to put five drops of the remedy on a piece of gauze and place the gauze on her gums twice daily. He also told her to stop eating simple sugars and to eat more protein and only complex carbohydrates, as he believed the staph infection was feeding on the sugar in her diet.

By Saturday, May 11th, Sandy was in serious trouble. She started vomiting Friday morning and by Saturday morning she was vomiting every 45 minutes and often kept vomiting for an hour. Her throat was raw and the blood vessels in her throat began to break and bleed so that the bile she was throwing up was laced with fresh blood. On top of that, her nose started to bleed from her left nostril every time she vomited. We called Peter and asked if he had anything that would stop the vomiting and he said she should stop using the remedy immediately. He said she was dying — the homeopathic remedy had triggered her body to fight the staph, but the fight was killing her — and asked if we could afford to take her to a Biological Medicine Clinic in Switzerland (For more information please go to Web Site: http://www.paracelsus.ch/ and/or www.marionfoundation.org or for excerpts of those Web Sites, please go to pages 8, 12 and 15 of this newsletter). Peter said he had no homeopathic remedy to stop vomiting and what she needed was in-house treatment.

Peter told us that the Switzerland clinic treated patients with Homeopathy as well as other modalities and monitored their progress closely and had restored the quality of life to many people who could not get well any other way. When I asked how much it would cost, and he told me, I told him we couldn’t afford it. He then said there was a clinic in Kentucky that was a “sister” to the one in Switzerland, and that he would call us back with the number.

We learned later that the new medical director of the Biological Medicine Clinic in Kentucky, Steven Johnson, D.O., had just started accepting patients there in March and Sandy was the first patient Peter referred to him. Peter had heard about Dr. Johnson (and that he was relocating from New York to Kentucky) at a seminar at The Marion Foundation, 3 Barnabas Road, Marion, MA 02738. Their Web Site is: www.marionfoundation.org. The parents of Nathaniel Baldwin created the The Marion Foundation. “Before turning fourteen, Nathaniel had undergone chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Although his doctors told him his leukemia was in remission, he was left debilitated. His quest for complete health led him and his family to the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. Nestled at the foot of the Alps, this clinic practices a treatment philosophy called biological medicine that puts health care back in the hands of patients.” —from Web Site: http://www.pbs.org/bodyandsoul/211/. (Read more about Biological Medicine, Nathaniel and the Marion Foundation on page 12.)

It was Tuesday, May 14th, when we received the name, phone number and Web Site of the Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic, 8909 Highway 329, Crestwood, Kentucky 40014, (800) 624-7080 or (502) 241-8621, Web Site: http://www.foxhollow.com/home.htm. In the meantime Sandy had continued to vomit and have nosebleeds day and night. She could eat very little and, because the bile she was throwing up burned her throat so badly, she kept drinking ice water so when the bile came up it was mixed with cold water, which helped her bear it. When we received the phone number I called the clinic and explained Sandy’s situation. The lady I spoke to said that Dr. Johnson was completely booked for several weeks but she would talk to him about Sandy and call us right back. The cost was less than half the cost of the Switzerland clinic, with no overseas plane fare. As soon as we heard what it would cost, Sandy made the decision that she would go and pay for it with her remaining savings. She reasoned that the money wouldn’t be any use to her if she were dead. In a few minutes the lady called back to say Dr. Johnson would make room for a two-week stay for Sandy beginning the following Monday morning. We arranged to arrive on Sunday evening so Sandy would be ready for testing Monday morning, May 20th.

On May 16, 2002 Sandy and I began our drive to Kentucky. We drove 2400 miles and Sandy vomited every hour or so all the way — and her nose bled every time she vomited. All she said to me the entire trip was, “Mom, I don’t feel good” and “When will we be there?” The first day we drove 500 miles. We did 700 miles the second day. And, since I was doing all the unloading and loading of the car at the motels, I decided we wouldn’t make it by Sunday night if we stopped again so I just drove the remaining 1200 miles straight through (24 hours). We were in my '86 Honda Accord so there wasn’t much room for Sandy to get

comfortable. She had a black eye mask and tried to sleep between bouts of vomiting. I listened to books on tape and ate sandwiches. The only thing Sandy could eat was mashed potatoes and gravy from Kentucky Fried Chicken. But we made it by Sunday night and on Monday morning Sandy reported to the clinic and began her recovery.

The Foxhollow Clinic is the most caring place in the world — and is situated in a beautiful, serene setting among 1300 acres of lush, green grass and trees. That we were fortunate enough to spend time there seems like a miracle to me. The staff and Dr. Johnson greeted Sandy with total confidence that she would soon be back to normal. One of the nurses gave Sandy several physical tests and drew her blood. Two hours later we met with the doctor privately. He asked Sandy several questions and then gave her 20 minutes to tell him everything that was happening to her and how she thought it began. Then, from what she told him and from her tests, he prepared an IV for her and wrote up a treatment plan that was started immediately. His diagnosis was severe neurasthenic pain and chronic inflammation — caused by the staph infection in Sandy’s bone marrow, which was causing pain and swelling of the blood vessels throughout her body. He also said Sandy’s nerves were raw and her adrenal glands were exhausted from the excessive oral surgery she had undergone throughout the previous eight months. He said that her body was too acid from the infection and her diet. He put her on an alkalizing diet that contained two glasses of fresh, organic, green vegetable juice daily (with an alkalizing green powder added to it) and gave her several supplements containing herbs, mushroom extracts, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals that she was to take daily. He asked her to avoid dairy products, sugar, starchy food and nightshade vegetables. (Note: We recently heard of a condition similar to Sandy’s: “When actress Kelly Preston’s son, Jett, was just 15 months old, he became very ill. A high fever and rash prompted Kelly and her husband, John Travolta, to rush Jett to the hospital. There, they heard what every parent dreads hearing — their son had come down with a rare disease. Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease, a childhood immune system disease that causes the inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body and, if untreated, may affect the heart.” For more about Kawasaki Disease go to the Internet Site: http://www.checnet.org/healthehouse/education/articles-detail.asp?Main_ID=443) (An excerpt from this Web Site is on page 7 of this newsletter.)

Sandy had an alkalizing IV before lunch, which stopped her vomiting and nosebleeds and for the next three weeks (after a week she arranged to stay three weeks) she had a different treatment every hour of the day (she had IV’s, homeopathic shots prepared especially for her and given directly into her gums, far infrared sauna baths, compresses, laser, acupressure and cranial sacral treatments, lymphatic drainage massages, colonics, art therapy sessions, and she swam in the heated, outdoor pool and sunbathed).

When Sandy’s DMPS challenge report came back saying that her body was still high in mercury she began taking Metal Free and Medicardium suppositories again (she had taken them six months ago and, when she could take enzymes without experiencing pain in her

abdomen, had stopped). (To order Metal Free spray or Medicardium suppositories, please see our order form.) Dr. Johnson explained that mercury binds with bacterial and/or viral infections and makes it very difficult for the immune system to rid the body of infection.

Our stay at the Foxhollow clinic flew by. Before we knew it we were saying good-bye to each of the staff members with tears all around. The founder and owner of the land and buildings, Mary Shands, had become a great friend and we thanked her profusely for her vision and generosity in putting together the most effective wellness clinic imaginable. (For more information about the Foxhollow clinic please visit their Web Site, http://www.foxhollow.com/home.htm. Excerpts from their Web Site are on page 8.)

Sandy drove by herself from Arizona to California and arrived home on June 12th (We drove together 1800 miles from Kentucky to Arizona, then I stayed in Arizona for a week.)

Since she left the clinic Sandy has been making her own fresh, organic juice (even in motel rooms, just like the Juiceman does in his infomercials), giving herself homeopathic shots and taking the supplements that Dr. Johnson sent home with her. He explained that it would be best if she continued for three to six months with a home version of the ingredients contained in the IV she was receiving at the clinic. He said she should expect to have good days and bad days, but that the bad days would gradually become better and better.

Sandy’s body has gone through a remarkable transformation. She is much less swollen and has dropped a considerable amount of weight. She often feels itchy all over and has noticed her skin has yellow shadows — like you see when a bruise is healing — that come and go, on her arms, legs, stomach and breasts. We believe this means her body is healing.

Now that Sandy’s strength is coming back she is making plans to attend a training course to become a Colon Hydrotherapist. We (Sandy, Dale and I) are totally convinced that achieving and maintaining a clean colon reverses a person’s “biological” age ten or more years. One example is the comparison between how I felt getting out of the car (stiff) on our trip from Calif. to Indiana in August 2001 and how I felt getting out of the car (not stiff, even after driving 24 hours straight!) on our trip from Calif. to Kentucky this year. We attribute this amazing improvement to the 33 colonics I’ve had since February 2002 (however, it is important to add that I have been taking 4 ounces of Water Oz minerals daily for two years).

Before taking colonics one of the things I felt the Water Oz minerals were doing for me was removing inorganic mineral deposits from my joints and tissues (another thing that helped tremendously was giving up drinking any water other than distilled water). Therefore, I think the fact that I’ve been taking Water Oz minerals, and had already begun to feel less stiff after a long car ride, contributed to my complete recovery in that area after having 33 colonics. [As well as gradually removing inorganic mineral deposits from the body, Water Oz minerals give the body the organic-size (angstrom-size) minerals it needs for repair and maintenance. For a free Water Oz Protocol booklet and audiotape call (800) 651-7080.]

Dale has been researching various colonic machines (we even visited a manufacturer of colonic machines in Arizona recently). The most interesting machine is called a Colonet. Read about the Colonet on page 17 or, to see pictures, go to Web Site, http://chrdorg.org.

Love,

Bonnie Note: Dale is writing a booklet, Colon Hydrotherapy Works! — The Conclusion of 100 Hours of Research. The booklet will contain a distillation of over 100 hours of research, comparisons and contrasts, conclusions and guidance as well as instructions and a “parts list” for building an “Autofill bucket.” See bottom of page 20 for more about the Autofill bucket. Carpet Cleaners and Kawasaki Disease By Aisha Ikramuddin Children’s Health Environmental Coalition

When actress Kelly Preston’s son, Jett, was just 15 months old, he became very ill. A high fever and rash prompted Kelly and her husband, John Travolta, to rush Jett to the hospital. There, they heard what every parent dreads hearing — their son had come down with a rare disease. Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease, a childhood immune system disease that causes the inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body and, if untreated, may affect the heart. Though only about 15 out of 100,000 children under the age of five get the disease in the United States every year, it is the leading cause of acquired heart disease among kids here. Jett was diagnosed and treated early; he suffered no damage to his heart or other organs.

In the hospital, Kelly was asked to fill out a questionnaire, which contained questions about family habits and activities. One of the questions asked if the carpets in their home had been recently cleaned. “Until then, I thought that cleaning the carpets religiously was the healthy thing to do for my children,” says Kelly. In fact, Kelly had the carpets cleaned frequently — and just prior to Jett’s illness. Was there a connection?

It’s hard to say. Scientists are not sure what causes Kawasaki Disease. A relationship between Kawasaki Disease and carpet cleaning was first reported in a case-control study published in 1982 in the medical journal, Lancet. Researchers investigating an outbreak in Denver found that 11 out of 23 of the children with Kawasaki Disease (48%) were living in homes where carpets had been shampooed within 30 days of the onset of symptoms; 10 of these children had played on the carpets two hours after they had been shampooed. In the control group (those who did not have the disease), only nine of 86 families (10%) had also shampooed carpets within 30 days.

Since the study was published, researchers have not been able to show a more conclusive link between carpet cleaners and Kawasaki Disease. A toxin-producing infectious agent — similar to those that cause Toxic Shock syndrome or scarlet fever — is considered a likely cause given the symptoms of the disease, according to many scientists. However, a bacterial or viral agent that might trigger the disease has not been identified.

Though the evidence of the relationship between Kawasaki Disease and carpet cleaners is not conclusive, there are plenty of other reasons to avoid using carpet cleaners in our homes. Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic Clinicians and Chronic Disease Being diagnosed with a chronic disease or condition can seem like an end. In fact, we

see many patients turning to alternative methods of health care only as a last resort. But at the Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic, we’re working to help our patients live well with their diseases or even triumph over them. Through a customized program of medicine, nutrition, and other physical and spiritual support, Paracelsus Foxhollow physicians and staff can help you manage your condition and ideally, give your body what it needs to arrive at a better balance.

At the Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic, we believe lifestyle issues are often the root causes of many health problems. Illness is just a “wake-up call” saying your body needs to move toward better health. Our emphasis is on lifelong learning and healing, so your body can learn to heal itself. To us, this is true preventive medicine.

What we do: Modern life can be tough on your body. Contemporary lifestyles often generate

imbalances in the human constitution and weaken an individual’s sense of well-being. At its worst, it can create an environment susceptible to disease and other chronic physical problems. We believe that bringing your body, mind and spirit into the “right rhythms” for your life has a lot to do with how quickly you heal from disease or chronic ailments. In essence, Biological Medicine is the ultimate in preventive medicine. We give your body the tools it needs to help itself.

Because we are an Integrated Medicine Clinic, we bring together a very broad spectrum of alternative medicine disciplines to address your health problems. We offer a synthesis of:

Biological Medicine The Marion Foundation (For the Biological Medicine Network)

“Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease” —Hippocrates, c. 460–377 BC

Welcome to a new understanding of health and the treatment of disease with biological medicine.

Since its inception, the Marion Foundation has been dedicated to exploring new frontiers in health and healing of mind, body, and spirit. Our culture has created new challenges and stresses for our planet, our bodies, and our daily lives. At the same time, we are so bombarded with confusing and often contradictory information that it is often difficult to figure out the best way to become and stay healthy. We at the Marion Foundation believe that we have discovered a path of medicine that provides just that — European Biological Medicine, as practiced at Paracelsus Clinic by Thomas Rau, M.D., and his associates.

Nathaniel’s Story We first learned about Paracelsus through the personal experience of Michael Baldwin

(founder of the Marion Foundation) and his wife, Margie, in their search for help for their son Nathaniel, who was being treated for leukemia. In 1993, when he was about to turn 13, Nathaniel was diagnosed with cancer. He underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a bone-marrow transplant from his sister. After he developed a complication from the transplant that reduced his lung capacity by 50 percent, the Baldwins began to search for ways to reverse this loss and rebuild Nathaniel’s immune system. A year later they read about Paracelsus Clinic, spoke with Dr. Rau, and decided that when Nathaniel was well enough they would travel to Switzerland and visit the clinic. Three years after that initial visit, Nathaniel is a college sophomore leading a normal, active life, with 97 percent of his lung capacity.

What is Biological Medicine? So what is this “biological medicine” and how is it practiced and by whom? The basic

philosophy of biological medicine is expressed by its name: bio-logic — the logic of nature. By working with the innate wisdom of the body and the natural life force within and around us, biological medicine frees our own natural healing systems to do what they were designed to do. And because every person is unique, biological medicine treats the individual and not merely the disease.

Page 14: THE ROAD TO HEALTH · with Dr. Benjamin Aréchiga in Tijuana, Mexico [his telephone number, from the U.S. is, 011 52 (664) 682-9464]. He is the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends

The Root Cause of Disease Put simply, illness is a state of imbalance. As Dr. Rau states, we all have a “disease

barrel” that fills up over time until eventually it overflows (toxic overload) and manifests as an acute illness, a chronic condition, or even a life-threatening disease. Rather than treating particular symptoms, biological medicine looks for the root causes of those symptoms. There may be a combination of many causes: toxins, diet, lifestyle, family history, and emotional stress, as well as environmental and other factors. On many levels, we are what we eat, drink, and breathe and how we feel, live, and work. We all have “up-building” (regenerative) and “downgrading” (degenerative) forces within us. Biological medicine talks about looking at the “internal milieu” (the soup in which our cells live) and identifying what is going on inside the body and what could be out of balance. Once balance begins to be restored, the body can use those “up-building” forces, reverse degeneration, and heal itself.

Biological medicine is also unique in that it offers a synthesis of many of the most time-honored elements of healing combined with high-tech (noninvasive) diagnostic methods. Integrated in this holistic approach is a wide range of tried and true modalities such as homeopathy, naturopathy, Ayurveda, anthroposophy, and traditional Chinese medicine. Some or all of these methods may be used in an individual’s detoxification program prescribed to help restore balance and stimulate the body’s innate healing powers.

The Dental Connection Though allopathic medicine generally views teeth as separate from the rest of the body

and unrelated to overall health, biological medicine considers dental treatments to be a critical part of the detoxification process. Root canals, implants, and dental amalgams containing heavy metals that can cross the brain/blood barrier have been shown to affect our brain cells and nervous systems. Because so many of us have dental amalgams composed of poisonous substances like mercury (which is so toxic that dentists must dispose of it as a hazardous waste) or palladium, for Biological Medicine, removing those amalgams from the mouth and thereby freeing the body of those sources of toxicity is a fundamental part of healing any disease. Using a Panorex, a detailed panoramic picture of the teeth and entire jaw, biological medicine practitioners obtain crucial information about the overall state of a person’s health (www.altcorp.com).

Biological Medicine Practitioners To further the understanding and practice of biological medicine, the Marion

Foundation has held training seminars for practitioners and created the Biological Medicine Network (BMN). BMN serves primarily as an ambassador for the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. Americans interested in attending Paracelsus can obtain referrals, questionnaires, and information from the BMN office, the only place authorized to make

appointments for U.S. patients to see Dr Rau and his colleagues in Switzerland. Referrals may also be made to the Foxhollow Wellness Clinic in Kentucky, the first licensed biological medicine clinic in the United States, and to the cadre of practitioners who have recently completed our two-year certification program in biological medicine. The network of practitioners in North America and in Switzerland is growing, and we would be happy to give you further details.

Paracelsus Clinic Who goes to Paracelsus? In addition to attending the clinic for preventive and health-

maintenance reasons, people choose Paracelsus because of its reputation for successfully treating many different diseases, including cancer, very often without surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Patients with breast and prostate cancer have had some of the most positive results. Chronic conditions like arthritis, asthma, allergies, endometriosis, and autoimmune diseases such as MS, Lyme disease, and Parkinson’s are also commonly treated. The optimum duration of a visit to the clinic can be anywhere from two to four weeks. The cost varies according to the amount and kind of dental work and supplements prescribed, as well as travel considerations and type of accommodations (which we can help arrange). The total cost of your visit may be anywhere between $5,000 and $25,000. Visit nfam.org, the Paracelsus Clinic — http://www.paracelsus.ch/ or the Paracelsus Foxhollow Clinic, Kentucky Web Site, http://www.foxhollow.com/home.htm for more information.

The Choice is Yours To sum up: We hope to have helped you gain a basic understanding of biological

medicine. When in the role of patient, we all want to feel as comfortable and confident as possible with both our choice of physician and our method of treatment. Each of us needs to engage in his or her own exploration. We do not claim that biological medicine is the answer for everybody, but we do support its philosophies and principles. We hope the outline we have presented here will help you to make informed decisions about your own health care; use the suggested links to find more in-depth and specific information, or contact the Biological Medicine Network office to learn more about the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland or a biological medicine practitioner near you.

We wish you well in your journey and the very best in good health.

Body & Soul’s Gail Harris Interviews Dr. Thomas Rau, Medical Director of the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland

Dr. Thomas Rau has been active as a hospital physician in rheumatology, internal medicine and general medicine. He has also trained students in naturopathic healing methods. Since 1992, he has served as medical director of the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland. A first of its kind, the clinic combines holistic medicine, naturopathic treatments and biological dentistry.

Body and Soul senior executive producer Gail Harris spoke with Dr. Rau about his approach to total health. Following are excerpts from their conversation:

GAIL HARRIS: Dr. Rau, when you talk about internal milieu, do you mean that it is important for us to know what’s going on inside?

THOMAS RAU: Well, you know, a human being is not an entity that is isolated in the world. You’re very densely connected with your surroundings, your environment, and nutrition. Depending on your diet, you can be a different person entirely. And this is what we call the milieu, which you can control yourself; it enables, for example, metabolism, detoxification, and all the things that give an equilibrium to the human organism . . . And it’s very much based on factors that orthodox medicine doesn’t touch upon.

GH: One of the other really important components of biological medicine is what’s going on in your mouth — your dental work, in particular.

TR: Each tooth is connected to an energetic meridian system, a system of energy, which flows over the organism, which has been known for thousands of years. And if you preserve your teeth with root canal treatments, or if you have toxic elements — for example, mercury, in your teeth, that can affect your overall health. And daily we see patients whose sickness was co-caused by dental work, especially root canals, infected teeth and heavy metals from amalgams or crowns and so on. And sometimes it’s like a key — if you remove them, then the patient gets better.

GH: So you’re saying that sometimes if you do something as simple as fix a root canal, the other problems will go away?

TR: Yes. For example with arthritis or asthma, or in chronic infections or allergies, very frequently we can make the situation much better by repairing dental work, giving trace elements and draining the toxins — especially mercury, which is very toxic, and affects allergies and immunities.

GH: How did we all get to be so toxic?

Page 17: THE ROAD TO HEALTH · with Dr. Benjamin Aréchiga in Tijuana, Mexico [his telephone number, from the U.S. is, 011 52 (664) 682-9464]. He is the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends

TR: Because our food contains toxins . . . and nearly everyone has toxins in their teeth. So much of our food is prepared with stabilizers and preservatives, and preservatives suppress metabolic functions. They prevent bacteria — but inside you have many billions of bacteria that you need. And they are suppressed too. So your whole internal milieu is changed.

GH: So the lesson is, ‘Eat only real food.’

TR: Yes!

GH: Biological medicine treatments are described as being non-invasive and non-toxic. But aren’t there times when surgery really is the best thing to do? I mean, if you have a brain tumor, don’t you want to get rid of it?

TR: You know, we are not complementary — we are primary medicine. And if people really follow our way of living and medicine, then on a few occasions, they will need complementary treatments — some operations or some chemical treatments.

I’m not against surgery. Absolutely not. For example, when a breast cancer patient comes, we pre-treat. I worked at oncological and rheumatological clinics, and I know what they are able to do. So we do integrate orthodox medicine into our thinking.

GH: How do you deal with problems that are primarily a mental health issue, and not necessarily a physical one?

TR: Well, we approach them nearly the same way. When a patient comes in for depression, for example — in Chinese medicine, this is a disease of the liver. And the liver is a metabolic organ. So for us, we don’t separate the mental from the physical, they go together.

Take for example, coronary heart disease, and heart pain, which is very common now. The patient will go to the cardiologist and get medications, but they don’t get better. And then I begin to treat them. And after some weeks or months, they tell me, “I feel like another person . . . I just approach life differently now, and I no longer have this painful understanding of my needs and duties.”

It shows how densely connected the mind, the psyche and the organism are.

Colonet From the Web Site, http://chrdorg.org

Article from Alternative Medicine Digest Magazine, May 1998

Colon irrigation, cleansing the colon with a water enema, is commonly recommended by natural health practitioners as an effective method of detoxification. But some people find giving themselves an enema messy or formidable, or the thought of going to a professional colon therapist either embarrassing or too expensive. For these individuals, the innovation of having a freestanding unit to accomplish this necessary intestinal cleansing should come as welcome news.

Called Colonet™ (from Prime Pacific Health Innovations Corporation in North Vancouver, British Columbia), this counter-top colon hydrotherapy unit can make colon cleansing and detoxification easier and more convenient to perform on your own. The device efficiently and gently pumps cleansing water into the colon, stimulating the colon’s natural peristalsis to move out old fecal matter deposited within the large intestine’s five feet of internal storage space.

Unlike an enema, which treats only the lower part of the colon, or a colema board which is messy and uses only a limited amount of water, a high colonic irrigation, made possible by the Colonet unit, rinses the entire length of the colon in a painless and sanitary manner, states Prime Pacific.

The manufacturer suggests the user recline during the irrigation procedure on a padded board (available from Prime Pacific) fitted over the bathtub. Over a 45-minute period, the unit delivers an unlimited amount of purified water into the colon. The water is cycled through the colon on a continuous basis, collecting impacted fecal matter that flows out under the irrigation’s influence.

A regulator valve on the Colonet™ allows you to adjust rate and quantity of the water flow to your comfort level. Water is not pumped by force but rather the flow is controlled naturally by gravity. This allows for fecal matter to be gently washed away. Waste water drains through another hose directly into the toilet. Hoses and connections are color-coded for quick and easy set-up. Speculum and waste hose are disposable for easy cleanup.

The counter top device includes an 8-quart capacity water tank, which is connected to your bathroom sink faucet or shower. The tank can then be automatically refilled for unlimited treatment capacity. This feature allows the user to continue the colonic for as long as it feels comfortable, although the manufacturer recommends that each treatment not exceed 45-60 minutes. A thermometer on the water tank allows the user to continually monitor the temperature of the treatment water.

Page 20: THE ROAD TO HEALTH · with Dr. Benjamin Aréchiga in Tijuana, Mexico [his telephone number, from the U.S. is, 011 52 (664) 682-9464]. He is the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends

The unit provides for water purification as well. Multiple filtration systems (carbon and sediment) clear the treatment water of chemicals, rust, pesticide residues, chlorine and other contaminants commonly found in tap water. An optional ultraviolet sterilization unit is available to treat the colonic water for bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. This ensures that clean water is being used in the treatment and that no additional contaminants are introduced into the colon.

A second tank on the Colonet™ unit can be filled with detoxifying agents such as herbal teas, chlorophyll, coffee, probiotics, or bentonite, to be introduced into the colon during or after the irrigation.

Why Cleanse Your Colon? Intestinal toxicity and impacted fecal matter are linked with numerous health

problems, from acute to chronic headaches and allergies to arthritis and cancer. If the colon becomes clogged or sluggish due to stress, improper diet, insufficient fluid intake or other factors, both absorption of nutrients and elimination of wastes can be impeded.

This in turn causes toxins to be re-absorbed into the body, which can potentially lead to chronic illness. “It is like the action of a sewer which backs up into the drain pipes in your house when the sewer becomes clogged or stopped,” says company spokesman Delmar Vogel.

“Cleansing the colon of impacted and putrefactive waste matter on a regular basis offers relief from a variety of disturbances,” Vogel explains. These can include chronic fatigue, gas, irritability, depression, skin problems, lethargy, constipation or diarrhea, yeast infections, colds and flu, bad breath, and insomnia, among others.

Testimonials Testimonials reveal the phenomenal success and delight of people using the Colonet Home Colonic Unit!

“...I am impressed with your company’s responsiveness and product knowledge. I have to tell you with all sincerity that your company really has a superior product compared to others I have reviewed for purchase. Your company’s attention to detail makes the Colonet very easy to assemble and use. The color-coded connections for quick assembly are excellent. The equipment is of high quality and durable and the design well thought out. I particularly like the implant feature and the ability to hang the unit on the wall. It was the first time I had a high colonic and found the experience to be very pleasurable and relaxing. I never felt so clean! To heighten my pleasure, I added the use of my wireless headphones and listened to my favorite tunes during the process. This is far superior to any enemas,

The quality of this unit and the ease to use it is second to none. But the most impressive about the Colonet is the highly effective treatments it is capable to provide that made a huge difference to achieve my optimal level of health and energy.

I feel that anybody interested in vibrant health should seriously look at this. Indeed a small price to pay for a huge, lasting health benefit.

Thanks for a great contribution. Don Tayler Coquitlam, British Columbia.

To Whom It May Concern: Why I like to use the Colonet Home Colonic Unit:

In the past, I used a colema board for colon cleansing. In July 1998 I purchased the Colonet from Prime Pacific International Ltd. in North Vancouver, Canada. I have used it regularly ever since and am very satisfied that I purchased the Colonet because of the following reasons: 1) Most importantly, there are no odors or mess while doing the colonic treatment with the Colonet, and the cleanup after the treatment is simple. 2) During the 45-minute treatment I never have to get up to refill the holding tank or arrange the implant solution. The filtered and sterilized water flows continuously into the holding tank, which allows me to use as much water as I want. The implant tank I can fill before the treatment. I can also check the water temperature while doing the treatment. In summary, the Colonet is far more convenient to use than a Colema Board. I highly recommend the Colonet to anyone who is serious about colon cleansing. Hugh Tanner North Vancouver, British Columbia.

The booklet will contain a distillation of over 100 hours of research, comparisons and contrasts, conclusions and guidance as well as instructions and a “parts list” for building an “Autofill bucket.”

The Autofill bucket is a nifty companion to the Colema Board as it does away with the disadvantages mentioned in #2 of Hugh Tanner’s letter above. The Autofill Bucket includes a
