Brothers and Friends,

Welcome to Rho Kappa Lambda! Since December of 2000, RKL has grown steadily, establishing a reputation for innovation, community service and a dedication to promoting educational excellence while retaining a collegial spirit.

We enter our tenth year of service to the Gwinnett County community with a special emphasis on preparing our young men to succeed academically and socially, From the High Chair, through High School and on to Higher Education.

On behalf of the distinguished gentlemen of Rho Kappa Lambda, I invite you to partner with us in this challenging and rewarding endeavor. Through our mentoring program brothers can make a lasting personal impact on a young man’s life, and we have numerous opportunities throughout the year for partners and friends to help us provide scholarships through the RKL Educational Foundation.

Please take note of the Upcoming Events to find out about your next opportunity to join us in person, or Contact us for information about joining the chapter as a new or returning member. I look forward to meeting you soon.

RKL HISTORY:

The origins of the Rho Kappa Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., can be traced back to 1998. A

number of unaffiliated brothers who live in the area expressed an interest in consolidating their efforts and assessing the feasibility of establishing a chapter to serve the Gwinnett County area. Although the efforts are not successful at the time, the process had begun.

On February 13, 2000 at 3:00pm, the official founding and formal meeting takes place. The nine men who met at the residence of Brother Andrew W. Snorton, III are able to see the process to fruition: Brother Maurice Cabble, Brother Manley Collins, Brother Dawayne Eason, Brother Sherman Fullove, Jr., Brother Calvin Fulwood, Brother Jeffrey Lamar, Brother Jerry Pope, Jr., Brother Andrew W. Snorton, III, and Brother Daniel Walker are duly noted as our charter or founding brothers.

On December 8, 2000, the chapter receives its charter. Since its humble beginnings, the chapter has achieved an unparalleled level of excellence. In light of its relative youth and size, the men of the Rho Kappa Lambda Alumni Chapter have steadfastly shown the metro Atlanta community that while many are called, few are chosen. And those few continuously march onward and upward toward the light.

This is the legacy and high standard that the brothers of the Rho Kappa Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. focus on attaining and achieving each and every day.

Rho Kappa LambdaTen Years, and Counting

It would be a cold day in a certain place that would slow down members of Rho Kappa Lambda’s celebration and reflection of 10 years of providing service to the

greater-Gwinnett County Community.

Well, it did delay things just a little bit; however, members did take the opportunity to come together, reflect, and build upon a 10 year history that started with humble beginnings (with 9 Founding Members), excellence (2005 GA District Chapter of the Year), and continued growth to respond to the ever-changing needs of the community.

After the chapter’s Super Bowl Party with North Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (which helps kick off our Chapter Anniversary Celebration), nearly 20 chapter members and their guests are able to attend the Chapter Anniversary dinner on Saturday, February 13th. In addition to founding members such as Brother Sherman Fullove (traveling from Florda) in attendance, brothers and their guests are able to enjoy a private dining area full of fun and fellowship at Sycamore Grill in Stone Mountain.

On Sunday, February 14th, five brothers are able to attend worship service at Freedom Christian Ministries, where Brother Pershing is the pastor. In addition to the timely message delivered by the pastor, brothers and all members and guests in attendance are clearly able to receive the spiritual renewal and encouragement to be of good cheer, and to continue to provide the stewardship and outreach needed in order to better serve our communities.

Given the snow that fell on Friday, February 12th, the Chapter Anniversary Mixer is rescheduled for Friday, February 26th. The event takes place at the Metropolitan Bistro and Bar (in Duluth); nearly 50 people are in attendance, along with nearly 10 brothers from the chapter. In addition to an evening of networking and socializing, all guests are able to enjoy some quality time in the private lounge area, as well as some fun at a quality event.

In all, given the events coordinated by the Super Bowl Committee, along with Brother Snorton, each brother is given the opportunity to enjoy a balance of events ranging from the social to the spiritual. Members are able to not only take time to reflect upon our ten years of existence, but to build upon the efforts of others to continue providing leadership and service to our community.

RKL First InitiateBrothers,

Rho Kappa Lambda (RKL) has been my third love behind God and Family. When I first sought out a chapter to be a brother of, I had

no idea what the lord above was going to grace me with. RKL has been a true blessing and came highly recommended by Brother Ira Foster. Homage needs to be paid to Bro. Foster for pointing me in the right

direction. This alumni chapter is the closest resemblance you will get to an undergraduate chapter as it relates to the brotherhood connection. The brothers of RKL are not just my brothers; they are some of my closest friends, which make doing the work of Alpha an awesome experience. During my nine years of service with RKL, I have chaired multiple fundraisers, participated in numerous service projects, held several offices, and performed in Step Shows. RKL is not just a once a month and I’m done chapter, it’s a part of your life. I have been on numerous trips with the brothers from Golf Retreats to Camping and I know if I ever need assistance of any kind all I have to do is call a brother of RKL. In the next 10 years I would like for RKL to have the same key structure and values that was laid upon when chartered in 2000 and to have a Fraternity House. The Fraternity House would be used as an educational center for youth and adults, meetings, and social events. It has been a pleasure being a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc through Rho Kappa Lambda Chapter.

A Moment From The Neos......Brothers,

So far as a new member of this great fraternity, I feel as though I have had the opportunity to experience

a lot. The chance to be chosen to represent my chapter at the District conference was great. I had a chance to meet so many new brothers, and most importantly a chance to learn so much about the history and the workings on this great fraternity. It was a wonderful experience, one in which I hope to experience again, in the many years to come. I have also spent my time starting a mentoring program at the school in which I teach at (Berkmar High School). I am excited that the brothers with the Education Foundation are willing to volunteer and mentor these kids as well. I am just ready to help the chapter and be of service in our many functions coming up. I forward to our many activites this year including helping to organize our efforts for the Bowl For Kids Sake project, and looking forward to our mentoring program at Shiloh and Voteless People is a Hopeless people Voter Registration drives.

Bro. Terrance Banks ‘09

Brothers,

I am very excited about being a part of an organization that sets the bar for leadership and community service. I have enjoyed the chapter meetings and learning about Alpha and it’s

business. I also enjoyed the District Conference. Getting to know brothers from around the state has been my biggest joy! I have spent the better part of my adult life trying to aid the down trodden. I have focused much of my efforts on young African American males trying to be a role model and a resource for them. I am especially proud of my relationships with The RKL Education Foundation and the great work that they are doing in Gwinnett County, and my work with Lambda Epsilon Omega Foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. of Dekalb, working as a mentor and chaperone for high school seniors. I also provide counseling and guidance to five young gentlemen who were in my Cub scout pack(YMOD SQUAD) Young Men Of Distinction! We have been together for the last four years getting together monthly for social activities. I also serve as the choir director and teen advisor for my churchs’ teen choir. I look forward to working with the students at Shiloh Middle School through RKL.

Brotherhood health tips: 40’sThis article discusses the mid-life crisis, talks about the aches and pains men experience in their 40s, and examines some common medical conditions.

Middle age is an ironic time in a man’s life. Although a lot of men have achieved their personal and professional goals by the time

they’ve reached their early- to mid-40s, it is also a time when many face their mortality and begin to notice deteriorating physical health.

This article will discuss some tips to help the healthy male cruise over the hill and beyond. It will briefly discuss the physical conditions of mid-life crisis, discuss some of the aches and pains most men experience in their 40s, and examine some common medical conditions to be on the lookout for as you progress through your middle years.

While not every man will experience a mid-life crisis in his middle years, you can count on experiencing physical and emotional changes that will startle you. Most men will suffer some form of andropause, or lowered testosterone count, in their 40s, resulting in decreased energy levels, a marked reduction in libidinal desire, mood swings and lowered physical stamina.

Your body’s supply of testosterone can be pumped up in a number of ways, including increasing your weights at the gym and eating red meat, but there is a test to determine andropause and hormone replacement is an option for some men.

You might not noticing a persistent ache or pain while getting out of bed and may become accustomed to numb or stiff limbs, but over time these afflictions will pile on and it’s best to start a regular, healthy fitness schedule as soon as possible. High-impact activities promote stronger bones and a healthier heart and pumping weights helps spur hormone growth. Always give yourself time for a thorough warm up and stretch before starting any exercise plan.

Try to be aware of the pains in your bones and joints and address them as they come up. Proper posture and good blood circulation will go a long way towards alleviating your aches and pains, but if a problem persists, seek the advice of your doctor. Don’t compound an injury by letting it go unattended in the hopes that it will cure itself.

As you age you are likely to experience weight fluctuations, but obesity becomes even more of an issue as we age. High blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease are all linked to weight and a healthy body begins with good nutrition and regular exercise. Make good, healthy lifestyle choices: Quit smoking if you’re currently a smoker, eat plenty

Page 11: The RKL Quarterly vol 1 Issue 1

of fruits and vegetables – which have been proven to combat both heart disease and cancer – and maintain a strenuous but safe workout regiment.

Managing your stress isn’t just a good idea: It could be a lifesaver. High levels of stress will leave its mark on your body, disrupting your sleep cycles, leading to mood swings, depression and sexual dysfunction, and affect your blood pressure and heart condition. Regular exercise helps some men in their 40s deal with the almost ubiquitous stress of daily life, but if you find yourself paralyzed by your feelings of being overwhelmed, seek professional help.

Your doctor can refer you to a therapist who specializes on stress management or prescribe medications that may help you overcome this barrier in your life.

Be on the lookout for any symptoms of heart disease including shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, and swelling in your extremities, especially your ankles or legs. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, men have almost a 50% higher death rate from heart disease than women. Although some people may be predisposed towards heart problems, the vast majority of us can affect positive changes in our lives and avoid heart disease by exercising regularly – especially intense exercises – eating properly, and giving up dangerous activities such as smoking, overeating, and drinking.

Prostrate exams are a fact of life for the middle-aged man. When the prostrate enlarges it can lead to a number of serious problems including urinary problems –leading to frequent urination, inability to urinate on command, and reduced flow – and sexual dysfunction, and may be a sign of cancer. You should also make a habit of checking for lumps or bumps in your testicles. The best time to examine yourself is during a hot shower and if you find anything suspicious make sure you consult your doctor.

Maintaining good health will help keep you within your target weight, promote healthy blood pressure and heart condition, and help you build a body that will last a lifetime.

Alpha celebrates the anniversary of the Greensboro sit-ins

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the world’s oldest intercollegiate Greek-lettered organization of African-American men, joins all Americans in the celebration of Black History Month in February and the recent grand-opening of a civil rights museum in Greensboro, N.C.

For 28 days Americans pay special tribute to people and events that shaped not only African-Americans history, but world history as well. A pivotal moment happened 50 years ago when four black university students in North Carolina including Brother Ezell Blair (Jibreel Khazan) of Beta Epsilon Chapter sat down at a whites-only lunch counter to eat. They were denied service because of their skin color, but their actions reenergized the Civil Rights Movement and the struggle by millions of African Americans to achieve racial equality and justice.

Inspired by Alpha Brother Martin Luther King Jr., these courageous students walked into a Woolworth store in Greensboro, N.C. Feb. 1, 1960 and America would never be the same.

“What these young students did at the time, changed the course of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. (national) general president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “Refusing to leave that Woolworth’s counter and the resulting demonstrations caused thousands in lost revenue and cast an all-important light on the situation blacks in the South faced at that time.”

“Alpha Phi Alpha proudly joins the rest of the country in honoring the work of these American heroes with the opening of a new civil-rights museum in Greensboro,” said Mason.

Recently, hundreds of people gathered at the former Woolworth department store to pay tribute to what happened 50 years before at the Greensboro sit-ins. It marks a new chapter in the history of civil rights—by ensuring no one forgets that seminal moment in 1960 and the resulting demonstrations that mirrored it across the country. It will be a lasting tribute to the sacrifices so many African Americans made for equality and social justice.

Alpha Celebrates the grand-opening of the Eddie G. Robinson Museum

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. join the Louisiana and American football family in celebrating the recent grand-opening of the Eddie G. Robinson Museum. The museum which honors Alpha member and legendary football coach Robinson officially opened the weekend of February 12-13.Robinson was always known for striving for excellence, and for his motivation to make his players super players—both on the

field and in the classroom. Robinson spent 57 seasons consistently fielding stellar football teams and guiding his young players to successful personal lives after college and successful professional careers in the NFL.

“Brother Robinson was known to be a humble man, but he lived a life so proud that it has made the name Eddie Robinson synonymous with the best that college football

Page 13: The RKL Quarterly vol 1 Issue 1

has to offer,” said Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. (national) general president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The Eddie G. Robinson Museum will be a landmark that officially recognizes the outstanding contributions to the state of Louisiana, the nation, and the game of football made by Robinson. The museum is located on the campus of Grambling State University where Robinson achieved legendary status by becoming NCAA Division I football’s all-time winningest coach.

Robinson won 408 games at Grambling during a football coaching career that stretched from 1941-1997 and is the namesake for the Football Writers Association of America’s National Coach of the Year Award. During his illustrious career, Robinson won nine Black College National Championships and 17 Southwestern Athletic Conference championships. The College Football Hall of Fame inductee graduated over 80 percent of his players and saw more than 200 of his athletes play in the NFL, including four who are now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Mike Tomin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, delivered the keynote address at the grand-opening banquet, which featured a number of celebrities and dignitaries including Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelley.

The museum is a result of the action of the Louisiana State Senate, Bill No. 919, which in 1999 authorized the establishment of a museum to honor the legendary football coach.

Alpha salutes the National Urban League on its centennial anniversary

As America celebrates Black History Month in February, Alpha Phi Alpha joins the people across the USA and around the world in saluting the National Urban League on its centennial anniversary. Formed in 1910, the NUL is an organization created by black and white reformers to address the needs of African-Americans as they migrated from rural areas to America’s urban

centers. A key part of its mission is the ongoing work to achieve economic equity and empowerment as a vehicle in which to elevate the standard of living in historically underserved urban communities.

“The National Urban League has been central to exposing the economic and social disparities of African- American families for a century now,” said Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr. (national) general president of Alpha Phi Alpha. “We are extremely proud of our fraternity’s role in the Urban League nationally and in cities all across the country.”

Mason pointed to the many Alpha Phi Alpha members that have helped shape and develop the NUL over the years. Five of the nine executives of the National Urban League are initiated members of Alpha. The fraternity’s influence began in the early days of the organization, with Alpha Phi Alpha Founder Eugene Kinckle Jones, who served as NUL leader the longest, from 1918 to 1940. Lester B. Granger served from 1941 to 1961, Whitney M. Young, Jr., from 1961 to 1971. Hugh B. Price became NUL president in 1994 and served through 2002, until former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial assumed the post.

Members and stakeholders of the National Urban League will formally celebrate the anniversary at its centennial conference in July, with the theme, “Empowerment Time: Past, Present & Future.”
