•England’s Geography• Being a small island
allowed England to avoid conflicts on mainland Europe.
• Caused England to invest in a Navy to protect itself

•Protestant Reformation• King Henry VIII separated
from the Catholic Church
• Why? To divorce his wife
• Claimed all of the land, money and gold of the Catholic Church in England for England XX

THE FALL OF SPAIN
• Fall of the Spanish Armada• Spain had the largest navy in world
• Built huge ships for trans-atlantic travel
• Spain’s Navy attacked England in the name of the Catholic Church
• England’s faster, smaller ships destroyed the Armada
• Significance: England’s navy became the most powerful in the world, Spain would go broke
THE FALL OF SPAIN
• With Spain no longer the dominate power, other nations began carving out areas of the Americas• English: 13 Colonies
• French: Canada/
Lake Michigan Area
• Dutch: New York
• Significance: These areas will become the United States of America
SCENARIO
• I want you to imagine you are 18 years old and ready to go to college. You have to decide whether you are going to go to college in Columbia/Mid-Missouri (Mizzou, Columbia College, Stephens) or go somewhere out of state.
• At your table, create a list of pros/cons for staying in Columbia and for moving to a new college somewhere out of state.
