JUNE 2012

The endless plains of East Africa are the setting for the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle.

The annual wildebeest migration, largely driven by the rains, has the 1.5 million wildebeest,

200,000 zebra and gazelle on the move. Because there is no set schedule nor is there a set route

they will follow, these animals will follow different routes, all trying to get to the same destination.

While on safari, you will witness thousands of them spread across the vast plains of Serengeti in

Tanzania and Maasai Mara in Kenya.

For those of you reading this article in the beginning of June, we can tell you that the massive

migratory herds are slowly heading northwest. The first large herds of zebra, which normally

precede the wildebeest, have been spotted on the Musabi plains. This is a sign that the herds are

moving towards the Western Corridor. Because the Seronera region is still lush and green, the

herds don’t seem to be in any hurry to leave. It is anticipated that they will be in central

Serengeti in the next couple of weeks.

The migration is a sight to behold and is something every traveler to East Africa must include in

their itinerary.
