DESCRIPTION

The Richmond Hill Music festival features bands and performers performing on outdoor stages in the suburb of Richmond Hill. Put together by the Alliance Française and various sponsors, this annual festival is a musical experience for the whole family. Various restaurants and boutiques on the streets of Richmond Hill also take part in the festival, giving the public a chance to not only enjoy a variety of bands, but also discover what Richmond Hill has to offer. The NMMU second and third year photography students document the festival and the bands and this booklet is a showcase of some of the photographs from the day.

Fête de la Musique was initially launched in France in 1982 and has thus become an annual social tradition in cities throughout France. Based in Port Elizabeth since 1960 and in Richmond Hill since 1990, the Alliance Française, international language school and cultural centre, has launched this idea to combine a contemporary French tradition with South African musical culture. Fête de la Musique allows the musicians and the members of the public to in-teract on a social level. It is also an opportunity for the citizens of the Nelson Mandela Bay to discover new artists and an interesting vehicle for musicians to entertain them.

The Alliance Française believes that Richmond Hill is the ideal venue to host the Fête de la Musique as it is emerging as a vibrant suburb with a large vari-ety of restaurants and boutiques situated in the area. Port Elizabethans have then the opportunity to walk from one venue to another and in so doing discover a variety of bands.

Initiated in Port Elizabeth in 2010, this year’s edition will be the fifth, and it will be supported by international stakeholders (such as the French Embassy, the French Institute and Reunion Island) as well as local, international and corpo-rate sponsors (NMBM, MBDA, NMMU, Weekend Post, Kingfisher FM, Coca Cola etc.)

NMMU second and third year photography programme students, from the Department of Applied Design in the School of Music, Art and Design were assigned the task of photographing the bands performing at the fifth annual Richmond Hill Street Music festival on the weekend of the 20th of June. This was a large-scale collaborative project involving twenty-eight photography students coordinated by photography lecturers, Glenn Meyer, Heidi Hattingh, Samantha Brauteseth and Roxane Van Wyk. The students are tasked with photo-graphing the event, the bands performing on the day and conceptual photographs of the various bands before the event. Each student is assigned a band or performer and is required to photograph them in a creative way that fits the style of the band. The image on the left of popular Port Elizabeth band, Skank and the Roots, taken by third year photography student Onthatile Mahlangu, is an example of the type of conceptual photographs produced.

The best photographs from the event are selected for an exhibition on the Richmond Hill Music Festival held at the Alliance Française.

The Richmond Hill Street Music FestivalPhotographic Exhibition at the Alliance FrançaiseEvery year, upon completion of the Rich-mond Hill Street Music Festival, the best images from the NMMU second and third year photography students are curated into an exhibition held at the Alliance Francaise. Along with the help of the photography lecturers from the NMMU Department of Applied Design, the students print, mount and hang the exhibition. Not only does this provide valuable learning experiences for the students, but they get to showcase their photography on an exhibiton and see the public engage with their work. This year the exhibition ran from the 3rd to the 30th of October and was widely viewed and enjoyed by not only the public, but various performers and bands who played on the day of the festival.
