The Rotary Club of Seven Springs participated in many back to school activities this year. They worked with the United Way of Pasco County to help “Stuff the Bus” with school supplies for the teachers. They also provided volunteers to help set up new classrooms at Richey Elemen-tary School in New Port Richey. The best part of their Back to School activities were the 41 back packs filled with school supplies that Commu-nity Service Chair Craig Reiser dropped off at Metropolitan Ministries.

Se rend ip i -ty--That’s the best word to describe what h a p p e n e d when San An-tonio Rotarian David Waite and Seminole Rotarian Bob Wierenga met on a recent visit to Tarpon Springs. Bob a p p r o a ch e d David and c o m m e n t e d that they were

dressed alike (khaki shorts, blue shirts, straw hats). After intro-ducing themselves, they parted to go their separate ways. Bob, however, overheard David and his wife Pat talking with Bos-nian Rotary Youth Exchange student Matea Andric. Bob asked if Matea was an exchange student, so David said yes, she was sponsored by the Rotary Club of San Antonio. Turns out Bob is a member of the Seminole club and he and his wife, Helen, had a RYE student from Germany stay with them, and their son was an exchange student to Germany. The connection be-came even stronger when David and Bob discovered they are both clergymen. All members of the Rotary Family!

Oktoberfest at Largo Cultural Center

Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. It is one of the most famous events in Ger-many and is the world’s largest fair, with more than 5 million people attending every year. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810.

Although the traditional Oktober-fest runs for the 16 days leading up

to the first Sunday in October, Oktoberfest at the Largo Cultural Center will be presented by the Rotary Club of Seminole Lake on Saturday Oc-tober 20 as a FREE benefit to the community. There will be plenty of the traditional fare: bratwurst and beer (for a nominal charge), free music provided by a number of bands playing traditional Bavarian music, craft items for purchase and fun and games for the children. A silent auction of many desirable items such as vacation get-a-ways, dining certificates and much more will be held from 4-6 PM.

The event is being presented by the Rotary Club of Seminole Lake Foundation as a fund raiser for the many community and international projects that benefit mankind. For more information please contact Gene Stern, Media Chair, 727-369-1512 [email protected].

Rotarian Chuck Oldanie promotes International Collaboration

Chuck Oldanie, Rotarian of the Semi-nole Lake Club, presented his vision of how three international organizations (Rotary, Seeds of Peace and Habitat) can work together and strengthen the mis-sions of each. Rotary has always worked to have international collaboration as one

of its tenets for peace and understanding. Seeds of Peace was founded in 2000 to have young men and women from regions of conflict (the first was Palestine and Israel) meet to share normal experiences such as sports and thus better understand their conflicted “enemies” who are just humans unknowing of each other. Habitat is the international organization that builds homes for people with sweat equity provided by volun-teers and the eventual “owner” of the home (President Jimmy Carter is the most visible member of Habitat).

The first effort of this collaboration was done in Mumbai India in early May 2012 when 13 members of Seeds of Peace, ages 18-22, and 150 other volunteers, along with Chuck, built eight Habitat homes.

Painting for Peace Day Across the Ocean To celebrate the United Nations’ Inter-

national Day of Peace, the Rotary Clubs of Clearwater Beach and Bitola Shirok Sokak sponsored a Painting for Peace Day on September 21, 2012, High school students in Clearwater Beach painted pictures of peace on area storefront windows. Stu-dents from local schools and Rotary Inter-national exchange students participated in

the event. Businesses that volunteered their windows included Island Estates Realty, Crabby Bills, Budget Blinds, Nick Ekonomides Law Firm, Cooters, and Pier 60.

The Rotary Club of Clearwater Beach was joined in their efforts by the Ro-tary club Bitola Shirok Sokak - Bitola, Republic of Macedonia in the Painting

for Peace Day. Students from several high schools from the town painted for peace and spread the Rotarian spirit. Natasia Nestorovska, president of the Bitola Shirok Sokak club stated, “The message PEACE STARTS WITH YOU and ME, will be the leading message for the comunity. We will pro-mote peace in every day life, peace with your friends, relatives, peace with your coleagues, neighbours, peace with members of other nationalities, peace with yourself”.

Social media networking contributed to the alliance between the two Ro-tary Clubs, who had previously never had contact with each other. Natasia Nestorovska and Alexandra Everist from the Clearwater Beach Rotary Club met on LinkedIn after Alexandra posted a message regarding the Painting for Peace Day Project. The two Rotarians worked on ei-ther side of the ocean to bring the project to life.

The United Nations de-clared September 21 as a day

to strengthen “the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples” (UN, 2012). The theme for 2012 is “A Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future.” Promoting natural resource management can play an important part in sustain-ing peace for future generations. Many wars stem from a lack of or a desire for resources. Resource sustainability is crucial for the future.

Sakuji Tanaka, President of Rotary International declared “Peace Through Ser-vice” as Rotary’s theme for 2012. Tanaka stated “Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that

we can achieve, every day and in many simple ways.” Peace begins in communities and extends out from there. Through service, individuals become more tolerant of other people or culture.

Many of the students involved in the Painting for Peace Project in Clearwaater Beach were actually Rotary exchange students. The Rotary Youth Exchange Program was founded to encourage peace among peoples. It is difficult to dislike members of another culture when you live with that culture. For over 75 years, students and host families have been in-volved in the Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs.

Clearwater Beach Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 12:15 at Shephard’s Beach Resort on Gulfview Blvd. in Clearwater Beach. For more information, call 727-237-8037 or check us out on the web at http://clearwaterbeachrotary.org/

Sunrise Rotary Hosting Exchange Student Keythellyn Alves-Silva is from

Parta Segura, Brazil and is the Rotary Youth Exchange Student being hosted for the 2012-2013 school by the Dade City Sun-rise Rotary Club. She is living with Rotary member John and Michelle Levitt and their two daughters, Angella and Amanda while attending Pasco High School.

The experiences for the students are directed at providing them the opportunity to learn about the culture of our country and the family unit as a functioning component of American life. Keythellyn has already, among other things, been in-troduced to high school football, major league baseball and chilling out on the family boat. One of her favorite excursions thus far has been shopping with the girls. Who would have guessed…

Wanted: High School students Seeking Adventure & Global Experience:Rotary International is putting out the call for high school students interested in spending

a year abroad as an exchange student in the Rotary Youth Exchange program ;Applications due November 2.

Rotary International is putting out the annual call for high school students in Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus coun-ties to apply to the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Successful applicants will be awarded the opportunity to participate in a year-long experience as a foreign exchange student in one of 34 countries on three continents-from India to Argentina to Sweden.

In the 2011-2012 exchange year, three students from the lo-cal district attended schools in Poland, Italy and Japan. Mean-while, the clubs welcomed seven international students to the Tampa Bay area, hosting them in our homes and schools.

Rotary International is the world’s oldest and most interna-tional service organization, with over 1.2 million members in 32,000 clubs, in almost 200 countries. There are more than 400 Rotary clubs in the eight Rotary districts in Florida. The official Rotary motto is, “Service Above Self”, and Rotarians live their lives in accordance with the Four Way Test.

Each year over 8,000 high school students participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange program worldwide, learning a new language and experiencing a new culture, through the efforts of Rotary volunteers around the globe. The Youth Exchange (YE) program in Florida is growing, through the efforts of the much energized multi-district organization, Rotary Youth Ex-change Florida, Inc.

Exchange student candidates must be outgoing, self-confi-dent, friendly, adaptable and adventurous, willing to learn a foreign language, with above average grades in school. The application form will require you to tell about yourself and your family and provide references from school teachers and administrators.

The Rotary Youth Exchange program is open to students be-tween the ages of 15 and 18 ½ on departure. It does not mat-ter whether your parents are members of a Rotary Club; the program is open to children of Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike.

Because Rotary International is a non-profit service organi-zation that focuses on humanitarian issues on a global scale, our program is widely considered the best of is kind; the pro-gram is certified by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel. In the book, “The New Global Student,” the author suggests exchange programs for students in search of a global education that will offer the skills needed to suc-ceed in the 21st century-calling Rotary International’s program the top choice “over all others, hands down”.

During the month of October, presentation meetings will be held throughout District 6950 for parents and students. Please register via the website for one of these informational meet-ings. www.ryeflorida.org.

Rotary Requests Assistance with Exchange Student Lodging

Opportunity to Host Foreign Exchange Student

Dade City Sunrise Rotary is asking for a family to step for-ward to assist with hosting a Brazilian exchange student.

Two 3-month windows of opportunity to bring a 16 year-old Brazilian Rotary Youth Exchange Student into your home are available. A short stay with your family can provide a myriad of learning experiences about another culture for your own children or even just the opportunity to further your own knowledge of life in Brazil.

The two time periods available are: December through Feb-ruary and March through June (starting December 2012). Kety is a lovely, 16 year old young lady from Brazil and is here in Dade City with a family until December and is a delight to have around. Won’t you consider either of the two timeframes available to host her

If you want more information about participating in this program, please contact the Dade City Sunrise Rotary Club Youth Exchange Officer, Camille Hernandez, 813-713-0124, [email protected].

Dade City Sunrise Rotary Club considers themselves fortu-nate to have been selected to have one of these students come to our town and would greatly appreciate the community’s help with this project.

Rotary Distinguished Citizens Award

Special Olympics – District competition Sept 29, 2012 at Seminole Lanes

The Pinellas Park Rotary Club supplied and served hot dogs, chips, snacks and a soft drink Saturday, Sept 29th, to ap-proximately 550 Special Olympian Bowlers and 150 of their coaches and volunteers at Seminole Lanes.

Rotarians, family and friends that participated included Chairman Joe Minarik & his son Joey Minarik and grandson Alex Brodsky, Josh Astarita & his wife Stephanie Astarita, Ken Bray, George Carter & his wife Ann Carter, Donna Eppes, Yvonne Fay, Dorothy Gilbert, Jerry Krauss, Kenny Krauss and his grandson Kaden, Kevin Krauss, Christine Patel and her daughter Mackenzie Patel, Theresa Pinnix, Don Vauiso, Hart-sel Overman and about 12 students from St. Petersburg High School Interact Club through the St. Petersburg Rotary Club - Downtown.

The Special Olympic Bowlers filled the 60-lane center for two shifts from 10am until 3pm, enjoying their bowling event.

On Sept. 26th Bert Valery had been surprised with the Rotary Club Distinguished Citizens Award at the Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach meeting where he had been invited as the guest speaker. During the meeting Bert Valery had presented to over 60 Rotary club members and guests an overview of the progress of the nationally known Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. Bert, since the loss of his son in 1983 who had been killed on the Bellaire causeway while riding his bicycle home, has tirelessly campaigned, orga-nized and personally assisted in the implementation of the county wide efforts that has been needed to create such a large project. It is estimated that 90,000 people use the trail every month, of

which many thousands are children who use the trail to walk safely to and from school. Bert Valery has also served as a Commissioner for the City of IRB and he is a founding member of Action 2000.

Beth Rawls is the Director of Pre-Kindergarten Services for Pasco County District School Board and the message she brought to Dade City Sunrise Rotary at a recent meeting was en-couraging. Pasco County’s Head Start Program has a mission to serve families so all children can learn and grow in a healthy, nurturing environment.

The Head Start Program works with families in need of assistance for young children just starting the education process. The program identifies children whose families need a little help with providing good nutrition, dental hygiene and giving them the opportunity to be educated. Head Start works with the families and children to create a community which works together so all Pasco County students will reach their highest potential.

District 6950 Water Project

2012-2013

According to the World Health Organization, over 1.3 million children, most under the age of 5, die every year from diarrheal disease related to drinking

contaminated water. This is over 3,500 kids every day.

PROJECT SUMMARY

Simonette, Haiti - a tightly clustered rural village– does not have safe drinking water. This project will install bio sand filters in 164 homes, filters and latrines in the 3 schools and provide an extensive hygiene education program in the community. There will be return visits to the community to monitor the program results.

Waterborne diarrheal disease, the second leading cause of death of

children under the age of five, is common. Access to potable water, safe hygiene practices (i.e. hand washing) and safe storage of water are critical to reduce waterborne illness. There are no government services or NGO development programs in the area.

This project, created by Boyd Acklin (St. Pete Sunrise Club), Chair of the

District Caribbean Partnership Initiative & Nelson Ryman (Zephyrhills Daybreak) will cost $38,500.
