the collect for purityAlmighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The PresentationThe bishops and people sit. Representatives of the diocese, both priests and lay persons, standing before the Presiding Bishop, present the bishop-elect, saying

Katharine, Bishop in the Church of God, the clergy and people of the Diocese of Washington, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, have chosen Mariann Edgar Budde to be a bishop and chief pastor. We therefore ask you to lay your hands upon her and in the power of the Holy Spirit to consecrate her a bishop in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

The Presiding Bishop then directs that testimonials of the election be read. When the reading of the testimonials is ended, the Presiding Bishop requires the following promise from the bishop-elect

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I, Mariann Edgar Budde, chosen Bishop of the Church in Washington, solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to conform to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church.

The bishop-elect then signs the above Declaration in the sight of allpresent. The witnesses add their signatures. All stand. The Presiding Bishop then says the following, or similar words, and asks the response of the people

Brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, you have heard testimony given that Mariann Edgar Budde has been duly and lawfully elected to be a bishop of the Church of God to serve in the Diocese of Washington. You have been assured of her suitability and that the Church has approved her for this sacred responsibility. Nevertheless, if any of you know any reason why we should not proceed, let it now be made known.

If no objection is made, the Presiding Bishop continues Is it your will that we ordain Mariann a

bishop?People That is our will.

Presiding Bishop Will you uphold Mariann as bishop?People We will. The Presiding Bishop then says

The Scriptures tell us that our Savior Christ spent the whole night in prayer before he chose and sent forth his twelve apostles. Likewise, the apostles prayed before they appointed Matthias to be one of their number. Let us, therefore, follow their examples, and offer our prayers to Almighty God before we ordain Mariann for the work to which we trust the Holy Spirit has called her.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

the first lesson Ezekiel 34:11–16

Thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.

On the holy mountain stands the city he has founded;the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

Glorious things are spoken of you,O city of our God.

I count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me;

behold Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia: in Zion were they born.

Of Zion it shall be said, “Everyone was born in her,and the Most High himself shall sustain her.”

The Lord will record as he enrolls the peoples,“These also were born there.”

The singers and the dancers will say,“All my fresh springs are in you.”

All sing the antiphon.

poemColeman’s Bed David Whyte (b. 1955)

Make a nesting now, a place to which the birds can come, think of Kevin’s prayerful palm holding the blackbird’s eggand be the one, looking out from this placewho warms interior forms into light.Feel the way the cliff at your backgives shelter to your outward viewand then bring in from those horizonsall discordant elements that seek a home.

Be taught now, among the trees and the rocks, how the discarded is woven into shelter, learn the way things hidden and unspokenslowly proclaim their voice in the world.Find that far inward symmetryto all outward appearances, apprentice yourself to yourself, begin to welcome backall you sent away, be a new annunciation, make yourself a door through which to be hospitable, even to the stranger in you.

Cuento a Egipto y a Babiloniaentre los que me conocen;

14 - The Ordination & Consecration of the IX Bishop of Washington

See with every turning day,How each season makes a child of you again, wants you to becomea seeker after rainfall and birdsong, watch now, how it weathers you to a testing in the tried and true, admonishes you with each falling leaf,to be courageous, to be somethingthat has come through, to be the last thingyou want to see before you leave the world.

Above all, be alone with it all,a hiving off, a corner of silenceamidst the noise, refuse to talk, even to yourself, and stay in this placeuntil the current of the story is strong enough to float you out.

Ghost then, to where othersin this place have come before, under the hazel, by the ruined chapel, below the cave where Coleman slept, become the source that makesthe river flow, and then the sea beyond. Live in this place as you were meant to and then, surprised by your abilities, become the ancestor of it all,the quiet, robust and blessed Saintthat your future happiness will always remember.

Each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Evangelista Santo Evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, según Juan.

Pueblo ¡Gloria a ti, Cristo Señor!

anthemCome, thou fount of every blessing Nettleton

Sufjan Stevens (b. 1975)

Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace! Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! Oh, fix me on it, mount of God’s unchanging love. Here I find my greatest treasure; hither, by thy help, I’ve come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be! Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee: prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

the examinationPresiding Bishop

My sister, the people have chosen you and have affirmed their trust in you by acclaiming your election. A bishop in God’s holy Church is called to be one with the apostles in proclaiming Christ’s resurrection and interpreting the Gospel, and to testify to Christ’s sovereignty as Lord of lords and Kings of kings.

You are called to guard the faith, unity, and discipline of the Church; to celebrate and to provide for the administration of the sacraments of the New Covenant; to ordain priests and deacons and to join in ordaining bishops; and to be in all things a faithful pastor and wholesome example for the entire flock of Christ.

With your fellow bishops you will share in the leadership of the Church throughout the world. Your heritage is the faith of patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and those of every generation who have looked to God in hope. Your joy will be to follow him who came, not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Are you persuaded that God has called you to the office of bishop?

Bishop-elect I am so persuaded.

Bishop Will you accept this call and fulfill this trust in obedience to Christ?

Bishop-elect I will obey Christ, and will serve in his name.

Sufjan Stevens (n. 1975)

All stand.

the nicene creedPresiding Bishop

Mariann, through these promises you have committed yourself to God, to serve God's Church in the office of bishop. We therefore call upon you, chosen to be a guardian of the Church’s faith, to lead us in confessing that faith.

Bishop-elect We believe in one God.All We believe in one God, the Father, the

Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the ministry of those whom you have chosen.

The Presiding Bishop and other bishops now lay their hands upon the head of the bishop-elect, and say together

24 - The Ordination & Consecration of the IX Bishop of Washington

Bishop Mariann continuesWe give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Bishop Mariann Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All We remember his death,we proclaim his resurrection,we await his coming in glory;

Bishop Mariann continuesAnd we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mary the mother of God, Peter, Paul, and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEn.

Pueblo Recordamos su muerte,proclamamos su resurrección,esperamos su venida en gloria;

the lord’s prayerBishop Mariann As our Savior Christ taught us, we are bold

to say,All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed

be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

ministration of communionAll who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. To receive communion, come to a communion station at the direction of the ushers. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and then drink from the cup when it is offered to you, or, if you wish, you may hold the bread and dip it into the wine when the cup is offered to you. Gluten-free wafers are available; please make your need known to the minister. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than receive communion, please join in the movement to the communion station and cross your arms over your chest–this will alert the clergy to your desire to be blessed.

anthemIn the Lord Jacques Berthier (1923–1994)

In the Lord I’ll be ever faithful, in the Lord I will rejoice! Look to God, do not be afraid; lift up your voices, the Lord is near; lift up your voices, the Lord is near.

anthemGoodness is stronger than evil John Bell (b. 1949)

Goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death; victory is ours through him who loved us.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu (b. 1933)

himno In the Lord Jacques Berthier (1923–1994)

himno Goodness is stronger than evil John Bell (n. 1949)
