The Resurrection of our Lord Easter Sunday
Service of Word and Sacrament March 27, 2016
Gathering The Holy Spirit gathers us to worship.
PRELUDE Cortège et Litanie Marcel Dupré
P: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! OPENING HYMN Alleluia! Sing to Jesus ELW 392
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We
have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For
the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so
that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.
Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives
us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I
therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the
☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with
you all. And also with you.

how you have transformed this world with your dying and your rising. Receive our joyful
praise. Alleluia! Amen.
Word God speaks to us in scriptures read, sung, and preached. A WORD FOR CHILDREN THE READING Mark 16:1-8 Pew Bible p. 829 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. SERMON
HYMN OF THE DAY Jesus Christ Is Risen Today ELW 365 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. SHARING OF THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

GRACE-BASED EVANGELIZING: Living & Telling the Story of Jesus Today - Thursday, April 14,
6:30 - 9:00 pm, at Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN. The ELCA's Region 3 Synods are sponsoring
this panel of speakers doing "TED Talk" style presentations exploring "grace-based evangelizing." Through
foundational material from Luther's "Freedom of a Christian" (Mark Tranvik) we move to how we talk
about Spirit-led conversion to the Way of Jesus (Christian discipleship) in a multi-faith culture, and how
we testify without shaming our family or heritage (Salim Kaderbhai). Attendees will explore how grace is
the base for evangelizing. Then, talks about evangelizing in community (Peggy Hahn) and through the
congregation (Tim Olson) will offer practical ideas and examples to witness the Spirit's work in, with
and through us as we live and tell the Story of Jesus today. Registration for the event can be found at
www.swmnelca.org or you may contact St. John’s church office. If there is interest in the event but less
interest in traveling to St. Peter, we could livestream the event in our fellowship hall. Let the office know.
JOIN TRUST YOUTH for an intergenerational event at Edina Morningside Church, Saturday, April 23
for Earth Day breakfast/crafts from 8:30-10:00 a.m., then heading to Browndale Park for clean-up and an
opportunity to learn about organic gardening. For more information or to register for this event, please

male and one female. Council Vice President Andrew Berg has agreed to be one of the representatives.
From the ELCA website, "Hear and share stories about gracious invitation, life-giving Christian
community, and just and healthy neighborhoods. You and your congregation will learn how to witness and
how to be a witness." If you are interested in being a representative or for more information, please contact
Pastor Tiede or check out the ELCA website at www.mpls-synod.org.
