The Resurrection of Jesus
According to Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 the gospel which saves us is the story of the
death, burial and resurrecon of Jesus Christ. The incarnaon of Jesus is a wonderful fact. But
it is that he came to die for our sins and to be resurrected from the grave that makes his life on
earth crucially important to us. He could have come to earth for a nice brief visit and then re-
turned back to heaven. He had done that before, and that would have been it. Without his
death and resurrecon, his life and death would not have redeemed us from our sin and death
and given us the hope of our resurrecon and eternal life.
When I think about the resurrecon I think about what would have happened to the
Chrisan movement, (really, there would have been no Chrisan movement) had Jesus not ris-
en from the dead. I believe it is safe to say that what would have happened to His followers is
the same that happened to the followers of the pseudo messiahs who arose prior and subse-
quent to the me of Jesus. Consider the following examples.
Among these are Judas Maccabeus (167-160 BCE), the leader of a successful revolt
against the Seleucid king Anochus. Many considered him to be the messiah because he had
delivered the Jews from oppression. He died, was buried and his followers have dissolved into
history. Simon of Peraea (4 BCE) was a slave of Herod the Great who rebelled. Some thought
he was the messiah. The Romans killed him and he was buried and is hardly known today.
Athronges was a Jewish shepherd turned leader whom some considered to be the messiah
some me around 4 to 2 BCE. A6er proclaiming himself as messiah, he led a rebellion along
with four of his brothers against Herod Archelaus. He and his brothers were killed. End of story.
In 6 AD, Judas of Galilee led a violent revolt against the Romans which was crushed. This
Judas was buried and forgo8en. Someme later, Menahem ben Judah, a grandson of Judas of
Galilee, led a Jewish rebellion against the Romans in Jerusalem. He had some quick success and
forced the Romans to withdraw. However, he had a rival zealot leader named Eleazar who was
also Captain of the Jewish Temple. Eleazar had Menahem ben Judah tortured and killed. Thus
was the end of this messiah.
At some me around 44 to 46 A.D. a Jewish rebel named Theudas led his followers on a
short-lived revolt against the Romans. Some writers believe that he claimed to be the messiah.
He and his followers are dead, buried and mostly forgo8en. In 70 A.D. John of Gischala parci-
pated in the civil war that raged within Judaism at the same me that Judea and Jerusalem was
being besieged by the Romans. John, no doubt, and many of his followers, saw him as the mes-
siah. Nonetheless, Jerusalem fell, and John was paraded through the streets of Rome in chains
and soon forgo8en.
And what about Jesus of Nazareth? Has he been forgo8en? Have his followers disap-
peared into the pages of history? Hardly. It esmated that there are 2.5 billion people in the
world today who consider themselves to be Chrisans and followers of Jesus Christ. Why? Be-
cause he was different. He is the one who rose from the dead!

A Hat Maker Wrote a Tune and a Blind
Woman Provided the Music
The music for such favorites as “Pass Me Not, O
Gentle Savior,” “Near The Cross,” “Savior, More Than Life
To Me,” “Rescue The Perishing,” “I Am Thine, O Lord” and
many, many more inspiring gospel hymns were from the
pen of William Howard Doane. For almost a century hym-
nals of most Protestant denominaons have included a
generous selecon of his composions. But Dr. Doane was
first and foremost a physician. Wring hymns was for him
an avocaon.
Silas Jones Vail was a hat maker. As a young man,
he le6 his home in Brooklyn where he was born in 1818 and
moved to Danbury, Conneccut. There he learned the abil-
ity to make hats. He then returned to New York City where
he established his own hat manufacturing business.
In 1874 Vail quit his hat making business to compile
and edit, with composer W. F. Sherwin, a songbook called
“Songs of Grace and Glory.” During this me, he wrote an
original tune but there were no words for the music. Since
Fanny Crosby was then the most celebrated author of gos-
pel hymn-poems, Vail thought of the blind poet in nearby
Brooklyn. He went to see her. He played his tune on the
parlor organ and before he finished the blind lady stopped
him and asked: “Bless your dear soul, your music speaks its
own words. It says, ‘”Close to Thee….Close to Thee’. Then,
a6er she prayed, she dictated while he took down these
words:
“Thou, my everlasng poron,
More than friend or life to me,
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.”
Refrain:
“Close to Thee, close to Thee,
Close to Thee, close to Thee;
All along my pilgrim journey,
Savior, let me walk with Thee.”
Remarkable, wasn’t it! Remember, she was blind!
