Dear Parents

Donburn has a very supportive and caring community. This was apparent this week with the enthusiastic group of parents

meeting last Thursday night volunteering their time and skills to refurbish the toilets. The fantastic raffle and cake stall

organised by Tammy Muller and the P&F. There was extra help needed in the canteen and meals have been sent to a

Hello Donburn community,

I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has sent messages of comfort at

this difficult time.

Also thank you to everyone who stepped in and helped out in canteen the last few days. It

really was great to know that canteen was operating which allowed me to concentrate on my

father and his care and later funeral.

Thank you so much,

Love and kisses to you all.

On Thursday 27th August, Year 1 students invited their grandparents or special friends to visit our school and classrooms. The students performed a very special song called “Grandma, Grandpa” and danced for their visitors. They also invited their visitors up for a dance .

The students spent time with their grandparents and special friends in the classrooms where they shared their favourite story books and presented their visitors with a special gift.

It was wonderful to see all the students spending time with their visitors.

YEAR 3 VISITS MELBOURNE MUSEUM

Last week we went to the Melbourne Museum as part of our History topic for

this term. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to learn about how Melbourne

has changed over time, and what games and toys we play with as compared

to what children played with well over a hundred years ago.

Did you know that Spinning Tops were used to entertain children?

Erica V—3C

Did you know that the first footballs were made out of possum skin? It was quite light, as

inside the ball was dried grass.

Majed—3C

Did you know that instead of using knitting needles, children used a “Knitting Nancy”?

A “Knitting Nancy” is a U-shaped metal instrument to knit wool, similar to loom bands.

Rebecca R—3C

Did you know that a wooden board game called Nine Men’s Morris was created for strategy.

It is similar to Chinese Checkers.

Ewan, Oliver P & Xander—3C

Did you know that Lego was originally made out of wood?

Courtney—3C

Did you know that original cameras could only take one photo at a time because you needed

to change the film each time you wanted to take a photo.

Miah & Natalie—3C

JAPANESE WITH CHIE

During Term 3, Donburn have been lucky enough to have Sensei Chie (mum of

Marina 4B and Leo 2T) visit and teach us about Japan and the Japanese culture. Some

of the things that the students have created (thanks to Sensei Chie) have been Ikebana

(the art of

flower arrangement) and Origami. Sensei Chie has also taught us about meditation and

many Japanese words.

As you can see below, the students have really enjoyed participating in these activities.

Arigatou (thankyou) Sensei Chie for taking the time to visit Donburn and teaching us

about Japan and the Japanese culture.

On August 24th and 25, I went to represent the school at the Victorian Interschools Snow Sports Championships for alpine skiing at Mt. Buller. I competed in the Moguls and Giant Slalom events in Division 4 for Grade 5 and 6 boys. I came 99

th out of 200 in the Giant Slalom

and 68th out of 106 in Moguls.

There were tons of schools from all over state represented and over 6000 students competing in skiing, cross country and snowboard events. The top 15 place getters in each event go on to compete in the Australian Interschool Championships this week. Overall it was great fun and I’m really proud of myself for what I’ve achieved in my first Interschools Championship. by Matt H 6H

To start a Basketball Team for the 2016 Summer Season -

Have a chat with the parents in your year level to round up 7 or 8 Players.

Nominate 1 parent to Coach and 1 parent to be Team Manager.

Contact the Committee and complete registration forms (located at the office).

Give your team a name.

Choose a training time.

Donburn Parents’ Basketball Association

COMMITTEE MEMBERS NEEDED

The current committee are unable to continue in 2016 and therefore need volunteers to take over the Secretary, Treasurer and Uniforms positions.

School basketball does not exist without the help of parent volunteers, so please think about how much the kids love it and the skills and lessons they learn from being a part of the sport.

These roles are not difficult, nor take up a lot of time.

We have had a great year being involved in the school community, and have really enjoyed being a part of something that the kids love. If you are interested in any of these positions or have any questions please contact the outgoing committee.

For any questions about registering new teams, please contact the committee.
