The Respiratory System KEY CONCEPT The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide. Respiration is the exchange of gases This includes: -The intake of oxygen gas -Release of carbon dioxide gas - Exchanges take place between the lungs and the environment Function: - Bring the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood, air and tissues Pharynx - The passage way for both food and air - Located at back of mouth Trachea - Windpipe - Air moves from pharynx to trachea Look at the image below. Based on what you have learned so far about the human body.... What is the worst that could happen? Larynx - Vocal cord - Located at the top of the trachea - Air moving between the larynx and trachea cause tissues to vibrate creating sound Smoking is the leading cause of lung diseases. Bronchi - Large air passage way leading into the lungs Alveoli - Tiny air sacs - Where blood and air meet Oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried by the blood to and from the alveoli. oxygen diffuses from alveoli into capillary oxygen binds to red blood cells carbon dioxide diffuses from capillary into alveoli ALVEOLI GAS EXCHANGES capillaries alveolus capillary co 2 o2o2 Co 2 diffuses into alveolus. O 2 diffuses into blood. Breathing - The movement of air into and out of the lungs - No muscle are connected to the lungs Diaphragm: - Muscle located at the bottom of the chest cavity - Responsible for the breathing motion
