Ride the Boom & Rock the Bust!!!

President’s Message

Greetings!

The 2016 Annual Meeting of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys (ACMA) will be held from September 22–24, 2016, at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, California. This year, ACMA’s always-valuable and well-presented continuing legal education programming—“Ride the Boom & Rock the Bust!!!”—will include topics covering legal issues and ethical approaches addressing the highs and lows of the ever-dynamic economic cycle affecting real estate and lending markets. The meeting will be in a setting that encourages the collegiality that encompasses ACMA events.

Both The Resort at Pelican Hill complex and the Newport Coast area of Southern California provide a great backdrop for ACMA’s 2016 Annual Meeting, with an enticing mixture of outdoor activities and attractions, dining and shopping choices, and scenic locations that will add to your enjoyment of the event. The resort is known for its accommodations and facilities and offers an array of activities and amenities to enhance your stay.

The meeting opens on Thursday with a State and Provincial Chairs Meeting, followed by the Board of Regents Meeting (to which all Fellows are always welcome) and then various committee meetings. The Corporate Counsel Group will be conducting its full-day programming on Thursday as well. For those not attending the Corporate Counsel meeting, Thursday afternoon is free to partake in a variety of activities. The President’s Reception will kick off the evening’s activities, followed by Dine Arounds and informal gatherings of Fellows and their guests.

On Friday and Saturday mornings, ACMA’s lineup of CLE sessions will take center stage. Friday afternoon features the Annual Dave Lombard Golf Tournament at the Pelican Hill Golf Club South Course, organized by ACMA’s accomplished golf czar, Jay Cook, and the recurrence of ACMA’s Mini-Golf Outing, an alternative golf program organized by ACMA’s mini-golf czarina, Beth Mitchell. Those who wish to book additional golf outings on Thursday or Saturday, or both, should check with Jay or Beth as to their respective events. ACMA’s annual dinner and new Fellow induction ceremony will be held on Friday evening at The Resort at Pelican Hill. Other than the CLE sessions and a brief annual meeting of the Fellows on Saturday morning, the rest of Saturday is free for optional activities and informal networking, with the last Dine Around scheduled for that evening.

We appreciate the efforts of Bob and Judy Holmes in selecting The Resort at Pelican Hill for this ACMA Annual Meeting.

Laura and I look forward to seeing all of you in California in September!

Donald A. Shindler ACMA President 2015–2016

Come take a single or double kayak tour through the flat and natural estuary of Newport Back Bay, the largest of a few remaining natural estuaries in Southern California. An estuary is a coastal wetland where salt water from the ocean mixes with nutrient-rich fresh water from inland sources to provide a fertile feeding

area for birds, fish, and other animals. Upper Newport Bay is an important rest stop and/or winter home for birds migrating from Canada and Alaska, and up to 30,000 birds can be seen here on any one day during the winter months. The bay is also a spawning ground and nursery for many commercial and sport fish, including halibut and bass. Naturalists will guide you through mudflats and marshlands so you can experience this amazing ecosystem up close.

scenic Corona Del Mar towards Balboa Island. Since you will have the Pedego, this route is easy to manage and

each guest can turn on the motor when he or she feels like they need a little extra help. While on Marine Avenue, make sure to grab a “Balboa Bar”, a noted legend on the Island, which is a rectangle of vanilla ice cream on a stick dipped in chocolate and covered with toppings of your choice. Give it a try and turn the simplest jaunts into an electric cruise that is guarantee to keep the wind in your hair and a smile on your face!

Secrets of the Sea Hike— An Eco Hike Through Picturesque Crystal Cove Thursday, September 22, 2:00 pm–5:00 pmSaturday, September 24, 2:00 pm–5:00 pm

$125/person

Discover the secrets of the sea while walking with seasoned guide Doug Thompson along the bluffs of Crystal Cove State Park, with its 2,200 acres of coastal beauty and 18 miles of footpaths. Doug is an accomplished author, ecologist, internationally recognized naturalist, expedition

leader, lecturer, award-winning film maker, photo-journalist, and above all, a man at peace with the planet—dedicated to keeping our planet the best it can be.

The park is home to a large wildlife population, and its trails meander along the bluffs and a mosaic of native plants, all framed by a panoramic overview of the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Learn the Native American uses for local plants in medicine, food, tea, utensils, and musical instruments, as well as the sophistication of our dolphin societies, whose members are often seen playing in the waves. You’ll also find out about the birth and death of a wave, whose “life” may have begun continents away. On the beach, you’ll explore what a 40-ton gray whale has in common with a two-ounce hummingbird and what is different about their annual 2,000–10,000 mile migrations, and so much more about the local coastline and its inhabitants. Athletic clothing and shoes recommended.

Wine Tasting Tour—An Exclusive Orange County Vineyard Experience Friday, September 23, 2:00 pm–5:00 pm

$210/person

Experience an exclusive afternoon of wine tasting and education at a local vineyard that boasts the only wine cave in Orange County! Founded in 1999, the vineyard itself is set in a world class botanical garden complete with exotic birds and a koi pond adjacent to the 850-acre

Newport Bay ecological preserve and bird sanctuary. Upon arrival, you will be greeted and enjoy an informative private tour of the grounds and winery. Following the tour, you will be led to the wine cave, where an exclusive tasting will await. The 1,000-square-foot wine cave utilizes the earth’s natural insulation properties to eliminate energy costs. That, coupled with the creative recycled building materials used throughout the venue, makes it the ultimate “green” setting! You will enjoy a tasting of four of their award-winning vintages, accompanied by a delicious array of cheese, charcuterie, and antipasti.
