The resonant extension of Qi –Key Requirements

A solid foundation has been established with inductive Qi

• Higher power charging

• Multi-device charging

• Multi-type of device charging (differing power levels)

• Spatial freedom (X, Y & Z) and support for non-planar charging

• Full compatibility with Qi v1.1

How can we build on the success of Qi and enable new requirements?

How can we do these things in a way that allows designers to make safe (RF exposure), efficient & EMI compliant products?

The resonant extension of Qi…

The WPC resolved to • Develop a resonant extension of Qi v1.1 that enables these requirements

• Keep “the promise of Qi” - provide compatibility with the existing Qi v1.1 transmitters and receivers

• Establish a special Resonant Task Force (RTF) to evaluate all possible options for extending the specification

• Invite the best companies in the industry to contribute and we created a new class of membership (Full Members) to allow contributions by non-steering group members

6

• Multi-coil or perimeter coils?

• What frequency of operation?

• Should we use a communications protocol that is in band or out of band?

• What efficiency levels are acceptable? (and scalable)

• How do we allow ease of design for safety issues: human RF exposure, heating of friendly and foreign metal (FOD) and EMI/EMC?

Many fundamental considerations for the resonant extension to Qi were scrutinized

• Resonant multi-vendor plugfest success

• Successful first 2-day plugfest, hosted by Philips last month

• Participation by 5 companies

• 3 transmitters, 2 receivers

• Shared mode protocol was proven on almost all combinations of Tx–Rx prototypes

• System was able to choose correct mode of operation at start up (inductive or resonant)

• No major issues found in the draft specification

• Can start developing resonant products
