Dealing with Alice’s Hodgkin Lymphoma has increased our understanding of cancer and our respect for the medical profession

In April 2016 Alice was admitted tohospital with an achey arm. Threeweeks, four CT scans, and twobiopsies later she had a diagnosis ofHodgkin Lymphoma: a fist-sizedtumour in her chest.

Over the past six months the tumourhas been shrunk down to a non-threatening scar through fortnightlychemotherapy sessions, which aregruelling for her, but life-saving.

The GraduateHenry graduated from Trinity CollegeCambridge after three years readingEnglish. He was soon heading forCalifornia, driving over the Oaklandbridge and singing Mrs Robinson.

Her medical team has been amazing.Alice put her Glasgow PhD on holdand moved back to Cambridge for thetreatment, which meant we could alllook after her when she needed, andhave the benefit of her cooking whenshe was feeling in need of chili.

It certainly puts everything else intoperspective. Brexit? Trump? We’vebeen concentrating on Making AliceGreat Again.

Apart from the minor hiccup of 6months off, Alice’s PhD at Glasgow isgoing well. She had her firstpublication, appearing in the Journal ofVirology with her co-authored paper,snappily titled ‘Role of the B Allele ofInfluenza A Virus Segment 8 inSetting Mammalian Host Range andPathogenicity’.

The Other GraduateAndy Murray finished the year ranked World no. 1.

His excuse wasvisiting U.S. universities for post-gradapplications. After 2,000 miles onAmerican roads he is happy to backwhere people drive on the right (left)side, and have access to a laundry.

Andrew will see in Christmas as a 60-year old. Yes, he’s astonished too. Tocommemorate the milestone, notoriousauteur Max Thompson has created ashort celebratory movie. Thanks toeveryone who took part and made thispiece of silliness possible. And thanksto Max himself for forcing us all to dostupid things on film.

Following up on her previous workfor the OECD, Helen organized aworkshop session for April’s meetingon Local Economic and EmploymentDevelopment. She slummed it in thePalladian surroundings of theFondazione Cini on the Venetianisland of San Giorgio Maggiore.

The Centre for Risk Studies, whichAndrew helps lead at CambridgeUniversity, has had a prolific year,with high-profile conferences andpublications on a wide range of risktopics. The Centre’s latest publicationis an influential new index of nextyear’s risk to the global economy thatreflects the turbulent times andgeopolitical events around the world.The research team has expanded thisyear and is running research tracks onseveral different types of risks. Thenext stage of research is intended toapply use cases to help businesssponsors apply the research directly.

This year’s Bumps Party wassurveilled by a sinister octocoptor,giving us spectacular aerial images ofthe event, but also a worried guest ortwo. Plenty to see from up there:rowing action and weather wereexcellent, and party goers also enjoyedthe sight of a bit of film-making on theside. Thanks once again to everyonewho came along and made it a day toremember. The university collegerowing races provided plenty ofaction, including memorably ‘Son ofAsbo’ the angry swan, and Maggiegoing Head of the River.

Her short story The Disappearance waspublished in the spring edition ofPerspectives magazine, Toronto.

Next July, her short play Water fromthe Lake will be performed at WimpoleHall as part of a collaborationbetween the National Trust and theCambridge group WriteOn.

Look out too for the web film seriesStraight White Man: Helen scripted theepisode Meeting Douglas, filmed onlocation in Leatherhead in November.

She has, as they say, “several projectsin various stages of development…”

Frank Applegate 1921-2016

Uncle Frank

Frank, Helen’s mum Edna’s elderbrother, died in November. He was amaster joiner, cyclist and combatant inthe D-Day landings, for which he wonthe French Legion d’Honneur medal.

We also lost Auntie Joan, Edna’s sister,remembered by her four children andthe rest of the family for her charmingpersonality and delicious food.

A social highlight was the Brightonsea-front wedding of Luki Sumner-Rooney to Liam Eveleigh. Their 2 yearold, Luna, stole the show – as it wasobviously her wedding day too.

Hardly a day goes by without news ofanother cyber attack. Andrew’s latestnew product for RMS is a model foranalyzing cyber risk.

Released with some fanfare inFebruary, it has quickly become amust-have piece of kit for RMS clientsselling cyber insurance – a new line ofbusiness for many insurers.

The project has been a successfulcollaboration between RMS andAndrew’s University research groupat Cambridge Centre for Risk Studies.

It involves getting ‘ethical hacker’experts to divulge how to steal abillion using only a keyboard (butresisting the temptation to try it out).

Why bother building one risk modelafter another? The latest ambitiouschallenge is just to model them all.Andrew’s new RMS Global ExposureAccumulation and Clash projectextends the idea of developing datastandards as a platform for future riskmodels, which worked well as anapproach for the cyber risk product.

The release – and the challenge ofanalyzing cyber risk – has had a lot ofmedia attention, with press coveragein Wall Street Journal, Financial Timesand the Economist.

The project continues with newproduct releases and even scariervisions of cyber scenarios in 2017.

Helen was elected Chair of CAR inJanuary – quite an honour from herfellow directors. She stepped downafter 5 months to focus on supportingAlice during the diagnosis andtreatment of her lymphoma.

Since then she’s continued her projectwork, on environmental analysis andoccupant engagement in low energybuildings, for clients such as thePapworth Trust and French buildingmaterials manufacturer St. Gobain.

CAR has continued to thrive, and nextyear celebrates its 30 year anniversaryof incorporation.
