Iterations Day 1.08-02=10

Coming in today with the SUN out for the first time in weeks, it seems the light released a POSITIVE energy as we all started

our introduction to the world that is internation-al

choreographer and artistic innovator Wayne McGregor. Our course director Nancy Tilbury

presented us with his body of work, sharing his

practice with us. Motivating all those who had stepped foot into the room today.

“ It seems to be that Wayne Mc Gregor has pushed the human body to develop form that

has never been seen before.” says Nancy. Wayne has created a world where there are

no boundaries, by collaborating with design forms from all backgrounds, cognitive annalists, composers, and the body of the dancer he is

working with, to create“phrases”by doing a series

of experimentation that could change in a sec-

ond from one direction to another, a way of com

municating dance that is truly ground braking, because it is not done in a traditional manner, Wayne respects the classical methods, but

felt it left him unsatisfied, he had to combine everything that influenced him as individual t create this new world, new way of looking and per

ceiving dance, so that it will satisfy.

After watching a series of films and interviews about the Random Dance group,

The MA students were asked to share phrases that have resonated with them. Key phras-

es that made an impact on the group, some

of the following.

The body misbehaving. Animal Violence Debate and challenge What my creative state can form with

my body. Knowing the boundary of shape. Slice of time and space Reduce object to its purest form.

A former brief of ours, 21st century bodIes

that we produced earlier in the course still fresh in our minds,

made it possible to understand Wayne’s work and let it

resonate and

provoke a series of questions

and debates, as we sourced through all of the

key themes that involve the fashion industry today and in the future.

We realized that the role of the fashion practitioner might become absolute, as the technology seems to progress rapidly whilst transforming and reshaping our everyday routines, and even

how we use our senses. Fashion is chang

ing and we are right here in the middle of it all happening, we question how will his effect the way that we form our practice and

how does this make us feel?

Taking in so much with all our senses today we went back to our primal state of

being, and relied on all our senses to provoke

out of 5 key words to work with, translate our provocations, or as Wayne would like to say

to translate into phrases.

Whilst the MAs where mind mapping their thoughts, the soft and subtle music in the background created an

effervescent ambiance. Looking fro

m a different angle, you start to capture everyday influences in a new and provocative way, truly magical if you can let yourself fall in love

a little with the world around you.

Soon the temperature in the room started heating up, after four intensive hours, we

stopped and where asked to write down ten words that resonated with us during this time

“It was a hive of activity” says Nancy.

Walking through and being able to capture key moments with each designer in their thought process to create their phrases, I

learnt allot from each individual, how they perceive a word,

and where it comes from, what it means to them,

how they translate it and how their ideas are born.

It was enlightening to see designers getting into

compromising positions to help each other achieve what

they in vision, as with dancers, sometimes

there will be a solo act

where the choreography was made for that

body and then a duo a dance made for two or even a group the more you have working together the more there is for the subject to take in and select

what they want to view and use that.

When looking back on the dance routines and how the dancers interacted with each

other you start to understand that they have

created a language between them and a new world that you are invited into by ob-

serving.

You where either exhausted or more motivated to continue, everyone left anticipating what

the next day would bring,

Iterations Day 2 & 3.09-02-10./10-02-10

Second day of iterations, the students started to form partnerships they felt they could collaborate with.Synergizing their own impressions with the other, combining phrases, generating their own physical vocabulary

The energy in the room morphed from electric to calm and focused state,flowing seamlessly trough the room. If you where perceptive enough you could most likelyvisualize their ideas as if they where tangible beings.

Observingeach group,you could tell that they started choreographing their own dance,First starting with actual words, hand gestures, then without words to guide each other.They started moving forward, be it by crafting,sculpting, draping. Constantly observing each otherso they follow, and collectively manufacture their pieces.

The body has alwaysbeen a source of inspiration to any designer past,present and future.It is the one constant within the industry,

To be able to create a new tangible language would be evolutionary and more satisfying for all of us, We use fashion to express, hide, blend,communicatea self we want to be perceived as by the world around us.

What would happen if we could brake away that barrier and create the personthe body, the dancer a new vocabulary to express what they truly embody asindividual.

Each group created a vocabulary that transcends a message of the dancers combined,

Poppy & Charlotte

“Symbiosis”

Having only peanut butter to sustain themselves as Poppy stated, it didn’t effect their creative collaboration what so ever. The duo decided to start with their own work, only to find a symbiosis between their garments. The pair created structured pieces, with soft alterations creating a contrast that lives in harmony with each other.

Ninella & Eva,

“Body Interactions.”

The key words selected translates to their intstalation, elastic, movement, referring to the movement of an elastic body, creating shape and silhouettes that is not regular, but by protecting it with textiles.

Starting with photography to capture moments where the body of a male and female where entangled underneath a transparent soft flowing fabric creating new silhouettes thus their tangible vocabulary. The final piece transcends into a installation that embodies their process. “Creating a slice of time and space.” Would be the phrase that comes to mind when I have to translate their work.

Stephanie,

“ Serendipity”

The restriction between Stephanie and the class by a barrier of a wall completely left her excluded from the morbid energy that was flowing from the one side, and she was left parallel to her own making, using a process she likes to call chance cutting, a method she has developed by using the music to evoke emotion that she transferred onto patter, and then onto the body, creating a 3rd skin that has 2 layers inner and outer interacting in a restricted way, ironic because the work was related to movement and the freedom of the body. But now the body has to find new way of movement and communicating within this3rd skin.

Richard, Jaime, Hayon

“Psychedelic caterpillars”

“They perform tap-dancing tea parties with psychedelic caterpillars” a phrase that resonated with Richard as he was traveling on the tube reading the paper, his illustrations inspired a collaboration between Hayon and Jaime, whilst watching one another drape materials on to each pallet the trio worked in harmony with their rather psychedelic approach creating architectural pieces, contrasting layers with color and unconventional materials, whilst Richard acts as the spectator being inspired by the dance he is interpreting in front of him. To the duo it was an experience not a thought process they where improvising.

“Similar difference”

The key words for this group set the mood for pain and confusion, two elements that don’t exist without each other. Inspired by Wayne’s response that contrasting elements are frequent but finding similarities are far more complex. The process combined elements of the student becoming the teacher, transferring knowledge on to each other as they explore new formulas of draping, taking elements of their details to express the emotions they want to portray.

“ Entanglement”

Taking a very personal approach to her surroundings, the veined entanglement of her inner self coming out through sketches, finding a way that she could translate it onto the body with a soft draping using a stiff fabric, the movement of her first garment inspired a new use of fabric twisting and twirling it into an vainly structure following from the heart to the back, on top of a sheer garment,

Winnie,

“ Shadows in motion.”

Creating a backdrop to a mysterious setting where shadows come out to play entangled with nursery rhymes in my head as I see playful textures against the black wall and a spider web. Winnie creates similarity with all black world with playful characters, evolving into a stop motion film of a world where shadows come out to play.
