STATEMENT BY THE TREASURER

The book value of the invested funds of the Society on August31, 1968 was 11,742,960 and these investments had a market valueof 13,741,000 of which |2,758,000 (74%) was in common stocks. This market value is $147,000 higher than a year ago.

Income received from investments during the year totaled$136,954, an increase of $6,750 over the year before, representinga return of 3.66% on the market value ofthe securities (7.85% onthe cost). This income was $2,100 more than the estimate made forbudgetary purposes a year ago.

During the year approximately $47,000 was from bequests anddonations for addition to the capital funds ofthe Society.

Although the economy continues to operate on a high level, it isexpected that the fiscal and monetary measures initiated early thissummer will have the effect of leveling off corporate earnings and,as a result, I am not forecasting an increase in the rate of return onthe present investments ofthe Society.

TOUCHE, ROSS, BAILEY & SMART340 Main Street

MR. A. GEORGE BULLOCK, TreasurerAMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY

WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS

We have examined the accompanying balance sheet resultingfrom cash transactions of American Antiquarian Society, as ofAugust 31, 1968, and the related statements of operations—othercurrent funds and changes in fund balances for the year then ended. Our examination was made in accordance with generally acceptedauditing standards and accordingly included such tests of the ac-counting records and such other auditing procedures as we con-sidered necessary in the circumstances.

It is not practicable in non-profit organizations to establish ac-counting control over all cash received prior to recording it, accord-ingly our examination of cash receipts was limited to gains on saleof securities, interest and divided income, and other recordedtransactions.

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above presentfairly the financial position of American Antiquarian Society atAugust 31, 1968, resulting from recorded cash transactions and therecorded income collected and expenses disbursed during the yearthen ended, on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
