The religion we have been finding out about this term is Hinduism

To start our work Mrs Shukla came to talk to us about being a Hindu in

assembly

We all listened as she told us about her religion.

We had thought about lots of questions we wanted to ask.

Sami, Zaidan and Humayd wanted to know why there are so many Gods and why do Hindu’s

pray to statues and Nadia wanted to know who was the main God

She told us that Hindus believe in a

Supreme God, whose qualities and forms are represented by many deities which come from him and represent different

aspects of him.

Leah and Halima wanted to know what was the most important celebration.

Mrs Shukla explained that for her it was Diwali. Holi is another big celebration.

• Tawana asked ‘What is

your favourite thing about being a Hindu? Is there anything you would change?’

• For Mrs Shukra it was Diwali and she wouldn’t change anything.

Ibrahim, Keeran. Dania and Abulbacher

asked how often do Hindu’s pray. • Mrs Shukla explained that in every home

families have a room or area (Mandir) where they pray every day. They also go to the

Temple, especially on special occasions.

Blessing wanted to know if women have to

cover their heads when entering the temple?

Mrs Shukla explained that they do not need to cover their heads but everyone should take their

shoes off.

Anu asked, ‘Do you baptise young

children like in Christianity?’

• When a baby is born a special ceremony is performed and prayers are said for the baby’s good health and well being.

Ali, Alaya and Alisha wanted to know how the religion started and who is the

founded it? Hinduism is one of the oldest religions-it

began about 4,000 years ago in north west India.

Joshua asked ‘Are Hindu beliefs similar to Sikhs?’

• The Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of teachings and writings by Guru Nanak and other Gurus These scriptures are written in Punjabi and are greatly respected by all Sikhs as the living word of God.

Hindu’s believe there is only one God –AUM, who is represented in different forms.

Mrs Shukla then went to the Reception Class to talk to the children.

On Tuesday 20th June, we visited the Hindu Temple in Nottingham

Nutan, a leader at the Temple talked to

us about Hindu Beliefs

This is the special chair used by the Hindu priest

sometimes knownas "pandit," which means a

"learned person,"

This fire pit is used on a Sunday after prayers,

when food is cooked and people meet together

There were lots of beautiful, colourful statues of the Gods that represent the

supreme God-AUM

This is a picture of Durgawho is riding on a tiger. She has lots of arms so she can

fight off the many demons.

These are more of the beautiful statues of the Gods-Hanuman, Shiva and Parvati.

Members of the Temple came to pray and brought gifts of food and flowers and

money to share with people who need help

This is the bell that is rung when anybody comes into the Temple to pray

We were given fruit as we left the Temple

When we got back to School we made puppets from the story of Rama and Sita

This group were sketching different Temples and then using water colours

Some Children had the chance to make Coconut barfi-

Year 6 children produced a cartoon strip about the story of the Creation Story

Years 1 and 2 made Diwali Pots
