Universal Life Force Energy
By Sadao Hayano, Reiki and Medical Qigong Therapist
Natural Health Organic Farm, Saratoga, CA, USA
13.7 billion years after the Big Bang, Charles Darwin, in 1859, told the story of a bacterium in
the primordial soup that became a fish, that became an ape, that became human. Human
evolution has a 5 million year history behind the achievement of its present intellectual and
physical proficiency level. We are able to communicate with each other through speaking,
writing, body language, telepathy, etc. We are able to cure people with Western and
Alternative Medicines. In this report, alternative medicine is examined.
The concept of ‘Universal Life Force Energy’ seems the basis of many alternative healing
methodologies -- Reiki, Qigong, Huna, etc. However, there remain a few missing links to
research between this concept and scientific knowledge. The writer hopes to explore in this
article how exactly we can apply current established scientific facts to an understanding of
Universal Life Force Energy.
The essential healing mechanisms treated in this article are derived from Evolution, Self
Formation, Water Chemistry and Mother Love. The reader may be the judge of whether
Mother Love plays the role of a major contributor to alternative medicine.
Self Formation and Entropy
We observe that there are two spontaneous forces in the natural world, one to cause
disorder and another to form order.
A typical example of disorder is the phenomenon of the office. We start a day in the morning
in an organized office. At the end of the workday, the top of the desk displays various
stationary items such as papers and pencils in random locations, and there is trash on the
floor everywhere. The degree of disorder is defined in physics as Entropy, the greater the
disorder, the larger the entropy level.
The spontaneous formation of order is called “Self Formation” in physics. Self formation is
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
2
created by patterns and rhythms and the degree of order is defined in physics as the level of
Internal Energy. A typical example of formation by patterns is the snow crystal, formed from
water molecules, H2O. An example of self formation by rhythms is the phenomenon of
enormous numbers of fireflies along miles of riverbank in Thailand, initially blinking on and off
independently, each with its own random timing, but which then synchronize themselves
spontaneously, converging their blink cycles into unison timing – as a result of spontaneous
self-forming. See the paper “Updating the Reiki Session” by Sadao Hayano, The Reiki
Times, vol 13, 2009.
Animal Cells
Animals are made up of various cells. The human body is said to contain about 6 x 1013 cells
of approximately 200 different kinds. With an average diameter of 3μm, the cell is the
smallest unit of life. A body cell consists of a dense material surrounded by a membrane that
separates it from the outside. The membrane consists of a Lipid Bilayer and Proteins (Fig.1).
Generally most of the lipid
membrane is made up of
Phospholipid and the proteins
are called protein channels or
protein transporters after their
function which is, among other
things, to contribute to the
intake of cell food and water
molecules, H2O, and the
discharge of waste.
These cell membranes in the human body are another example of self formation. The lipids
spontaneously form bilayers known as Liposomes in aqueous solution. The details of this
mechanism are well known. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/liposome or the text book
“Molecular Cell Biology” by Harvey Lodish, W. H. Freeman and Company, 2000, for example.
There are a few technical words in this article. The reader is encouraged to refer to
www.wikipedia.org for more detailed information.
Briefly stated, the lipid bilayer in general is a selectively permeable barrier between the cell
and the extracellular environment. This permeability allows the cell to maintain a constant
internal environment and the specific selectivity depends on the kind of the cell. The transport
of molecules across all cell membranes is mediated by these transport proteins associated
with the bilayers. Thus, the role of the protein is to maintain both the membrane’s electric

gradient and the chemical concentration gradient between the inside and outside of the cell.
The electrical and chemical gradients are used as the means of signal transmission through
synapses as demonstrated below.
The Neuron Signal
We switch our discussion to the neurons, the cells of the brain where all of our thinking and
emotions are processed. The brain is the control center of all human activities. The neuron,
or brain cell, consists of three basic parts: the cell body with the signal receiving dendrites,
the signal transmitting axon and the signal
outputting synapses (Fig. 2). Living cells
sense their environmental situation as we
sense our world; the cells detect and
understand their own living world at each
instant and seek to situate themselves as
best they can within that world. The
thought processes in our brain are
accomplished through neural networking.
Synapses keep changing or updating their
connecting partners throughout life by
spontaneous self formation as they further
their best interests. When we study and
learn new subjects, the number of
synaptic connections increases
accordingly. Several thousand inputs can
be connected even to a single neuron to
accommodate its studying and learning
goals.
Here is a brief description of the signal transmission
mechanism in the neuron network. Assume that neuron wants
to transmit electrical signals to neighboring cells in the
network. This electrical transmission is done through the
synapses which convert electrical signals to their chemical
equivalent signals using Potassium ions K+ and Sodium ions
Na+ which, in turn, create an Active Impulse Voltage of 80mV
in the dendrite in the next cell (Fig.3). This impulse
transmission continues further to the neighboring neurons. In
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
4
this paper, for the sake of simplicity, we have listed only the two chemicals K+ and Na+ in
explaining this transmission, the traditional synapse chemicals as discovered in early neuron
research. In reality about 100 ionic transmission chemicals, called neurotransmitters, have
been discovered to date.
Neurons are accompanied by another brain cell, the Glia. Neurons and Glia coexist in
physical matrix forms in the brain to accomplish brain function. Aquaporin channels are a part
of the membrane of Glia protein channels. These glia cells support the neuron structurally
and regulate water quantity around synapses to ensure that chemical transmission, K+ and
Na+, takes place across the membranes. Details of Neurons, Glia cells and the Aquaporin
channel are to be found in www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glia_cell, or the book, “Water Molecules
in the Brain” by Tsutomu Nakada, Kinokuniya, 2006 (Tentatively interpreted title from
Japanese ‘No nonakano mizubunshi’).
Water Cluster, Health and Anesthesia
The pituitary gland works in conjunction with the kidneys
to maintain correct water levels in the human body. Water
normally comprises around 70% and protein 17% of
human body weight. The water molecule H2O is a dipole
with a diameter of 2.76Å. There are a number of types of
chemical bonds between atoms and between molecules.
Our present interest is hydrogen -- covalent and ionic
bonds. Water is a liquid due to the ability of its molecules
to link together by forming networks of hydrogen bonds.
The ability to dissolve ionic solids results from the fact that
electrons accumulate slightly on the oxygen atom,
inducing in it a slight negative charge, while making the
hydrogen atoms slightly positive by depriving them of their
electrons. This is the dipolar characteristic of water
molecules (Fig. 4).
Water is not made only of water molecules, H2O, but, as
water molecules themselves dissolve and break down in
solution and are ionized, water actually consists of H2O,
H3O+, H+ and OH- and these all connect as ionic bonds
(Fig. 5). When water molecules dissolve in water, there
are various possible forms of morphologically connecting H2O, H3O+, H+, OH-. In many
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
5
instances these connections group themselves
autonomously into clusters due to their ionic
characteristics.
Water is a perfect medium for processes such as the
transporting of nutrients into cells and also provides a
fluid environment within cells through which other
molecules migrate. A basic unit of life is the three
dimensional structure and this depends on the
morphologies of water molecules. The morphology is
derived by the self forming action between the body
and water. The human body naturally works well with these specific functionalities of water.
However, the strength of the hydrogen bond is about 10% of that of the covalent bond. Given
external or internally created energy, water cluster formations break off and undergo
morphological changes.
On occasion, this normal, dynamic relationship might transform the human state in an
adverse direction as a result of physical and mental stresses in the body at the time. Thus,
the orderly connections which existed between H2O, H3O+, H+, OH- are disengaged and
reengaged randomly. The fluid environment becomes sluggish and forms morphologically
antagonistic or incompatible high-entropy clusters in the body. Alternative medicine regards
this phase as one in which the smooth flow of Qi energy in the body has broken down and
random stagnations with increased entropy have developed. As a consequence, the body
becomes sick.
The healer is able to observe and detect these physical and energetic stagnations and will
sense water cluster manifestation in the patient’s body (Fig. 6.) At present, we have no data
yet as to which specific morphological forms affect the human adversely.
One positive medical aspect of the water
cluster is anesthesia during surgery.
General anesthesia medications contain
stable cluster forming elements and this
medication forms micro crystals from the
water molecules at the neurons which
cause the human to lose consciousness.
From a physics standpoint, this
unconsciousness corresponds to the
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
6
brain’s state of maximum entropy. This medical fact is known as the Aqueous Phase Theory.
For further details see www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_pauling.
Hippocampus
Cell division is a process whereby a mother cell divides into two daughter cells and this
applies also to neurons in the Hippocampus. The primary function of the hippocampus,
located in the center of the brain, is memory formation and memory recall, or memory
management. The hippocampus is one of the parts of the brain that has been well
researched in the medical field. We explain briefly medical processes in the hippocampus
neurons here.
The raw information received in the cerebrum is transmitted to the hippocampus for
evaluation. Then, the hippocampus judges the quality of the raw information, pastes its
evaluation upon the raw information accordingly and sends the results back to the cerebrum
which stores this renewed
information in the memory
storage system (Fig. 7).
Brainwave measurements
indicate that memory
management in the hippocampus
is carried out most effectively with
the brain in a θ wave mode state,
with an approximate frequency of 4 Hz. We note that the human is very relaxed in the θ brain
wave state. See the book “Increasing the Brain Cells” by Tatsuhiro Hisatsune, Kadogawa,
2007 (Tentatively interpreted title from Japanese ‘Nosaibo No Fuyashikata).
When need arises in the future, the hippocampus pulls from the cerebrum any necessary
memories, which are then transmitted out to other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum
where appropriate action is taken.
Evolution
According to the best scientific study, the Big Bang was the event which led to the formation
of the universe about 13.7 billion years ago. We note further that the salt water of the seas on
Earth has existed for 3.6 billion years and that it took 300 million years to create a
Phospholipid Bilayer with an evolutionary process. Progression from living single cell
organisms to present multi cellular animals involved further evolutional and natural

7
processes. Present human evolution has a 5 million year history. Neuron cells have been
evolving separately but in parallel with the liposome above.
The evolution of the human body has taken millions of years, as this history indicates, but
micro adjustments to the body for improvements and a better future are being made every
second and influencing long term evolution. It is important to emphasize that self formation is
a part of the positive progress of evolution.
Note: Darwin’s “Theory of Natural Selection” of 1859 states that things can change their
design without any outside help.
Mother’s Love and Universal Life Force Energy
The baby starts to receive mother’s love immediately after conception. The brain and body
developments are affected heavily through self formation. This micro evolutionary process
into an adult human is started at this moment. There are many ways for a mother to provide
stimulation to a healthy baby including the transmission of plenty of love and Qi energy, the
so called Universal Life Force Energy, which creates healthy cells, organs and body systems.
After the baby is born, the mother trains and cures the baby by touching, hugging, talking
and loving it so that the infant’s cells learn how to receive the healing energy for their best
childhood development. We see energetic exchanges taking place between the mother and
baby who are in physical and mental contact. Here, healthy neuron networks of the baby are
developed through self formation. This is not done through DNA information which describes
only basic rules but not detailed blueprints. The mother’s responsibility is to give the baby
continuous love so as to create the best possible blue prints for the neural network to
function in the baby -- just as in daily life, one must stop at a red light to comply with traffic
regulations, but the decision as to which direction to take at the intersection, straight, left or
right, is left to individual discretion and self determination.
For a scientific study of distance energy exchange between individuals such as mother and
baby, please refer to “The Electricity of Touch” by Rollin McCraty, etc, Heart Math Research
Center, 1998. Another excellent reference is “Qi, the Scientific Study” by Yoshio Machi, TDU
Publication, 1993 (Tentatively interpreted title from the Japanese ‘Chi O Kagakusuru’).
Just Mathematics
(a) In Newtonian physics, the Superposition Principle confirms 1 + 2 = 3 which is defined
in a Linear environment. This is a basic principle of life that we learn early in school.
In actuality, the human body is not created as a biological linear 1 + 2 = 3, because
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
8
lots of biological elements exert quantum influence upon each other all the time. If
one biological element of value 1 acts to superpose upon another biological element
of a value 2, then 1 + 2 = X + Y, where X is not 1 and Y is not 2 anymore. We do not
know what these values are. This calculation belongs a set defined as Non-Linear in
mathematics and as Complex Systems in physics. In our real world, everything exists
as complex systems. Mathematical calculation is difficult if not impossible in non
linear equations. Traditional linear system solutions are good and practical
approximations to simulate a solution for non linear systems. Thus, Newtonian
systems are an approximation of the real world which works most of the time and
possibly with adequate accuracy. However, we need to remember that we actually
live in a quantum world and not a Newtonian one.
(b) Free Energy, F in physics, is defined by the equation F = U – TS where U is Internal
Energy, T is temperature in Kelvin and S is Entropy. When the value F is positive F≥0,
self formation takes place. While when F is negative F≤0, disorder reigns. An
example of the internal energy U in Joules is of the strength of hydrogen bonds of
water. An example of the entropy S in Joules/Kelvin can be seen as a higher than
normal temperature in a sick body (fever). Healing researchers should explore this
equation further. Some numerical examples can be found in the article “Updating the
Reiki Session” by Sadao Hayano. In that article, the reader can see that the
information level in IT is another form of entropy.
Conclusion
The human has evolved over millions of years on the earth. Each of us is contributing to this
evolutionary process as evolution continues at the micro level. The brain is the control center
of all human activity -- thinking, memory, consciousness, action, taking command, etc. Our
brain functions are accomplished through brain cell neurons and its neural networks. 70% of
the human is water, either in cells or extracellular. The water molecule H2O is a dipole. Water
contains H2O, H3O+, H+, OH-, as ionic bonds and these water molecules form various
clusters. The ionic elements and clusters go through the synapse and dendrite walls with the
aid of the protein transporters to maintain a constant internal environment in the neuron.
The human body works well with the functionality of water. Healers feel the Qi energy flowing
smoothly in healthy bodies. Energy medicine is recognizing the healer’s various rather
intuitive feelings as the accepted way of arriving at an initial diagnosis. In addition, when the
healer works with Qi energy, the patient is very relaxed and is in a θ brain wave state.
Universal Life Force Energy, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
9
Scientific measurements and experiments show that brain creativity functions best in this θ
wave state.
The mother has trained the baby with love by touching, hugging and talking to achieve
healing. She has in her hands a huge capacity for compassion and has nursed us with
Universal Life Force Energy since we were born. The hippocampus and neuron networks in
the cerebrum memorize her love and energy. Her healing algorithm stored in the brain
memory system directs our body in establishing the best morphological connections of H2O,
H3O+, H+, OH- at any given time throughout our lives and for future evolution. The healer, by
calling upon Universal Life Force Energy, gives healing energy to the patient as the mother
does during childhood. It is through this energy that the patient is able to heal.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, alternative healing methodologies, together with their
origin in and connection to Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection as reported in this article,
may not receive welcome and acceptance in technically advanced countries, and the
domains of Western Medicine. The influence of slight and incremental morphological
mutations upon evolution when seen in the context of our own individual life spans may not
appear meaningful to them. One can see clearly however, how a mother’s love is an
ineluctable demonstration of everyday healing in our lives which has been evolving for
millions of years.
Note: The reader who is interested in pursuing further the relationships between Universal
Life Force Energy, Mother’s Love and Altruism, may like to read “Evolution” by Dylan Evans
and Howard Selina, Icon Books, 2010.

Recharging Your Compassionate Heart
By Suzanne Scurlock-Durana
Are you someone who cares about other people? Are you
among the first to notice if someone is upset? Do you like to
help those in need around you? Are you someone who often
thinks of other’s needs before your own?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you are
probably a person with a lot of empathy. When you are
someone who has a lot of empathy it can sometimes be
difficult to learn how to have both healthy connections and
healthy boundaries. Yet, both are required in order to enjoy your life and not burn out as a
caring, empathic person. Empathy increases our ability to feel exquisite joy and deep
connection to life. It also increases your capacity to feel everything else – which can include
pain, confusion, frustration, and fear.
The key for keeping your capacity to receive life fully without being drained is in knowing how
to take care of yourself so that you stay energized. Many people with high empathy find their
attention often goes externally to helping others. Noticing what is happening around you is
not the issue. The problem is when we lose our ability to sense what is going on inside
ourselves because of the habit of paying more attention to what others need.
In simple terms, do you know how to turn your attention inward? Often it comes down to
habits – what were you rewarded for in your family growing up? If you were rewarded for
taking care of everyone else, it often was at the expense of taking care of yourself. In order
to know what you need, it is necessary to know how to sense what is going on inside
yourself. Do you know what your needs are? Do you think it is somehow selfish or self-
centered to pay attention to your own needs?
What we are discovering in today’s world is that with the stress we all live with on a daily
basis, it is paramount that we learn to take care of ourselves. The airlines have it right – you
must put your own oxygen mask on first before helping those in the seat next to you. If you
don’t, there will no one to help the child or the person in need beside you. It runs counter to
Recharging Your Compassionate Heart, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
2
how most of us were raised. Yet when we know how to fill our own containers, it gives us a
lot more to offer the world around us. Our gifts are more fully and easily expressed.
The other interesting fact about this is that when you feel good and energized it makes you
more effective and often more efficient. Have you ever noticed that when you are tired or
frazzled that you make more mistakes? Research has shown this to be true across all
professions, not to mention our private lives.
And, there are distinct skills in how to listen to your inner wisdom that can be taught and
learned. I have been gathering these skills from many different sources for a number of
years. Initially I taught primarily healthcare professionals. But today more and more regular
people are realizing the importance of these skills.
So how do we learn the skills of staying full and energized? Can anyone learn these?
Absolutely!
First, start by being curious as to what is going on
inside of you. Allow yourself to slow down and take
your attention inward. You may need to partially or fully
close your eyes. Simply notice what is happening
inside your body with no judgment. Whatever shows up
is fine.
Once you are paying attention inside, notice sensations, intuitive hits, physical awareness
that is new or familiar. Register it all with a neutral mind. Be curious. You are simply drinking
in your experience – it may offer you important information that only your inner landscape
can give you.
Next allow yourself to feel the underside of your body. If you are sitting, feel your sitting
bones on the surface you are resting on. Feel the bottoms of your feet on the floor. Allow you
awareness to drop underneath of you into the earth. With gravity you are connected to the
earth all the time - so feel it!
Once you are aware of this connection, allow yourself to soak up nurturing energy from this
connection with the earth. Like a sponge in a clear pool of water, simply allow nourishing
sensations to begin to fill you up a pace that works for you. What would that feel like? Do
your best to feel it as well as seeing it. And take your time.

When you are ready to move on, notice how you feel compared to when you started this inner inquiry. You have taken the first steps to full body presence. Over time, this simple practice will help you develop a fuller sense of trust and confidence in yourself and the world. Enjoy! Full Body Presence
Interview with Suzanne Scurlock-Durana
What exactly do you mean by full body presence?
When I talk about full body presence I mean my, or your, capacity to be present, to feel
sensation, to know where you are and where you are not, in your body. The definition in the
book is “the ability to feel all parts of your body, with a good flow of healthy energy moving
through you. In order to have a healthy energy flow moving through you, you need
connections to your inner and outer healthy resources…and you need to have a healthy
sense of your personal boundaries. To know how to ground and fill up with whatever
nourishes your cells.
How does it help with burnout?
When I am in my body and connected to healthy resources that help me stay energetically
full, then I am I begin to register it when events or life are wearing me down and I can slow
down and rest or plan my day to be able to slow down later…
What about emotional pain?
I feel whatever I am feeling, and then I expand the container of my body around it. Then I ask
myself what I am believing about myself or my life that is making me so miserable. It is often
an unconscious belief or expectation that is running my show. Maybe I am feeling like I am
alone, and lonely and always going to be lonely, etc. Or, I maybe I am feeling like I am
somehow flawed as a human being and therefore am deficient in some way. Or I might feel
like I am too much, that people are not going to love me because I am just too much, I
Recharging Your Compassionate Heart, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
4
overwhelm people and situations and lose love that way. Whatever it is, I can then hold that
thought or expectation and ask myself if it is really true at this moment. And it rarely, if ever,
is actually true in this moment. So as I hold the container of my being around the area in
pain, I cradle it, holding it with love, and letting it slowly, slowly integrate back into the rest of
me when it is ready. This is a really quick synopsis of a process that can take from minutes
to days or weeks, off and on, of working with this integration process.
What kinds of people find these skills most useful?
Those in healthcare (MDs, RNs, PTs, OTs, MTs, PAs) as well as those in non-hands health
related professions such as coaches, psychotherapist, social workers, hospice workers,
psychologists, etc.) and other professional and non-professional caregivers such as parents
(esp. parents of special needs children), adults caring for their elderly parents, ministers,
foster parents, etc.
How does full body presence help those in healthcare and other professional and non-
professional caregivers?
It helps us to have healthy boundaries so we don’t inadvertently pick up our patient’s or
client’s pain or fear. It helps in that we become what I call the “largest pendulum in the room”
with those we are caring for, so that our calm, centered presence pulls everyone in the room
into that calmness rather than our being pulled off center by their pain, fear, worry, etc.
How about in the bigger picture of discernment?
Well, one of the big things that full body presence gives you is excellent access to your own
inner knowing about all kinds of things, from what is most right for you in any moment, to
what is really off and needs to be avoided at all costs. And as you practice your full body
presence, grounding and staying full, your trust of your inner knowing gets really strong. It is
nice, to not second guess yourself all the time. You just know inside. And when you don’t
know – meaning you don’t have a hit about something it usually means you need to wait to
make the decision…don’t jump on prematurely.
How did you come to this work initially?
It came in waves or layers across a lot of years. I got parts of it from the sense of energy
vibration that I loved in my church growing up when everyone would sing. That is a full body
experience if you are singing full out. Then my yoga practice and meditation practices; and

then T’ai Chi and Qigong along with my indigenous teachers…and then all my bodywork
training, esp. CranioSacral therapy which teaches us to listen acutely with our hands. I
quickly realized I could feel a whole lot more if I listened to the people on my table with my
entire navigational system, my entire body, not just my hands and my heart. It really
expanded my skill level as a CS therapist and instructor.

Nature as Mirror
An Ecology of Body, Mind and Soul
By Stephanie Sorrell
If I am to reflect upon my first encounter with nature as a gentle but
dynamic presence, I look back to when I was about eight years old
and crept out of the bedroom window early one morning before
anyone was up and ran down to the sea. My excursion took me
through two adjoining gardens richly vibrant with the sound of
birdsong.
The grass was an intricate network of dew-spangled webs and the
morning whirled about me in an exotic kaleidoscope of vibrant colors.
The song outside me sounded within me also. As a child I felt exhilarated, in love, and
intimately connected with the life around me.
These encounters, before I went to boarding school at age twelve, became a frequent source
of great relief and comfort for me. In the midst of nature’s beauty and bounty, I was able to
lose that sense of isolation within my soul and simultaneously become an integral part of
something greater than myself. If God was anywhere, then he/she was here in the depth of
nature, radiating love and beauty throughout creation. Sometimes I would skip Sunday
school to hold my own private communion with the Divine on the beach or in a garden.
As time passed and my thirst for the Divine, deepened I began to see that nature was multi-
faceted as shadow interplayed with light, rain with sun, snow and ice. Nature was, as
Persian poet, Omar Khayam, expressed, “a checkerboard of nights and days”. Without
darkness there would be no light as all sunshine would make a desert and all rain would
create floods. Yet, although floods and deserts are an integral part of nature’s rich tapestry,
a delicate balance runs like a thread through this compelling tapestry of being. One that we
are only just beginning to heed as a race amidst our obsession with ‘becoming’ and ‘having’
more.
By the time I was seventeen, I began to experience a deep and unremitting depression that
would begin in the fall and last right through to the end of April. This took place every year,

2
sometimes varying a little in season and initially I put this down to my creative temperament.
But as the years passed and I had undergone therapy, becoming a therapist myself, I
realized that this was part of the fabric of my soul as well as being part of the ancestral matrix
I was embedded in. After a time, you come to accept what you cannot fix, overcome and
cure and, painstakingly, unpick the dark threads to find that they compliment the light. I came
to understand that you can better heal and empathize with others to the extent you have
suffered yourself. Healer and patient/sufferer are the same.
Looking through this mirror, I have come to understand that not only does nature reflect my
own personal dynamic but that of the collective human soul also. These cycles or seasons of
the soul are a template not just for our inner journey but for also the greater, universal
journey of life. I remembered how amazed I was as a child when I scratched away the dark
backing of an old mirror to find the clear glass beneath. We need the dark backing to see
our reflection until we are able to see clearly the panorama of beauty that waits inside us to
be discovered.
The cycles we pass through are
based on the model of a tree:
Rebirth/bud (Spring)
Blossom (late Spring, early
Summer)
Ripening (late Summer)
Harvest (Fall)
Stripping ( Fall)
The Long Wait (Winter)
Wilderness (Winter)
With insight into these cycles along with the qualities and opportunities they bring we can
intuit where we are in our own inner process. For example, we might feel as though we are
at a dead end in our inner and outer life, but by aligning ourselves with the signs and
symptoms of the Long Wait or the Wilderness we come to understand that everything is as it
should be. Rather than battle against something which seems inexorable and debilitating we
can accept and even love it as part of our growth. Yet, to be able to do this we need to
surrender to the heart, or the mind in the heart.
By the same token, we may struggle with the period of blossoming in life when it seems that
our time has come, yet we hang back in fear of being our true selves. How many of us dare
to shine, to stick our head above the parapet and claim our true self? Similarly, as the
Nature as Mirror, An Ecology of Body, Mind and Soul, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
3
blossom falls away revealing the swelling fruit beneath, we can look forward to a new and
enriched life. Yet, we may hesitate in the wings at the prospect of manifesting what is
closest to our heart. How easy is it to ‘give away’ what is closest to our heart, knowing that
our children and creative gifts are not ours to keep? They have their own journey in the
world.
As nature mirrors an organic template of birthing, becoming, giving away we find this
overlays the cycle of our soul on the spiritual pathway. This inner organic map holds and
validates our own journey as a natural ecology of body, mind and soul.

Holistic Training of an Aspie Mind (Aspergers Syndrome)
By Sufani Garza
Ever since I was young I have felt different than others
around me. I have been able to see, feel and hear things that
others apparently couldn’t. My particular life’s work and
training has been to help others heal in their lives and accept
who they are with their own set of special gifts. As a shaman I
am called a ‘Word Soul.’ So having a son with Aspergers was
not something I couldn’t handle. I never set limitations on
Jordan; I simply saw things for what they were and worked
with them in a way he could understand. There were times
when I felt frustration and there were times when I got
irritated or angry that Jordan could not process things the
way I wanted him to. While trying to figure yourself out, the less tolerance you have for
yourself, the less you have for others.
I have cultivated the gift of patience and have always been a soul seeker so although I was
not perfect in my responses early on with three kids and being a single mom with an absent
parent and all the pressure for these three little souls to keep safe, fed, sheltered and
clothed, I had to seek out a higher good in life to survive.
I had always questioned the concept of God in a way that wanted to know why we were here
and why there is suffering, so my journey through religion started at a young age. I passed
through many religions, studied theology and then on my own realized that God is more than
just the concept of right and wrong ways of behaving. In my perspective human beings can
limit and demean God through their judgments of others.
I believe in God and have always told the children that they can choose for themselves what
they believe. But that God in my eyes is what I called, The Great Silence, The Great Spirit,
Prime Creator or Prime Mover. I appreciate everyone’s search for Prime Creator and don’t
deny anyone’s experience. But what I have taught in our household is that we create our own
reality, that life is an earth school to which we have a choice to create our own reality. We

have all written our own life scrolls and if there is something like Aspergers or any number of
other things in it, we wrote that in for a reason of learning, and so learn we must.
If we all look at our experiences in life and choose to see the good in everything then there
are few dark moments in life. If we are refusing to surrender to our higher good
then darkness can hang over our heads; darkness is lack of information, light is information,
awareness and consciousness. We can only make changes when we acknowledge what is.
I have learned and taught that our religion is gratitude, love, peace and compassion and that
we never attach our ability to be those things to a man or a god. We take responsibility for
ourselves and in that we are responsible for inculcating those qualities into our lives and
sharing them with others.
We all have the ability to work to heal ourselves and bring ourselves to a state of calm and
peace if we take ownership of our health. When Jordan was small he fell off the swing at
school in the playground and broke his radius (forearm) bone. When it had to be set I told
Jordan how to breathe deep in through the nose and out through the mouth like I had taught
him before when he needed to calm down or got hurt. I had taught him to close his eyes and
picture a pretty scene in his head. He did not know the setting of his arm meant it would be
broken back into place. I had him close his eyes, picture and breathe. At the same time the
doctor set his arm.
I remember he opened his eyes having the wind knocked out of
him and looking at me shaking in pain. I told him calmly, “It’s ok,
breathe deep, the pain will go away.” He trusted me
wholeheartedly and although his eyes watered he never screamed
or cried. The doctor said to me later, “I have never seen anything
like that before. That was amazing what you taught him to do.”
Jordan and the family have been recipients of healing therapy
through Reiki and various other methods of healing including
Chinese Traditional Medicine, Western Medicine and Eastern therapies I call integrative, not
alternative and a positive mental philosophy of love, acceptance and harmony with all life.
We use all methods as we see fit based on need and we do not hold judgments against one
from the other. All healing has it place.
Healing Jordan has been looked at as a mind/body/spirit effort. We all heal this way and have
all had to work on our healing for one reason or another in our household. My children all

3
understand that having anger only hurts you and your health. My daughter actually saw how
her anger caused her to be sick the very next day. It happened on two occasions and so she
believed and understood the somatic response that how we think and feel affects the body.
For Jordan, training the mind to be healthy in how it thinks, to keep focused on what you
want and know what you don’t want is a way to keep the mind clear of darkness and
heaviness. But it did not change his Aspergers, it served as a tool to get through life’s
difficulties with ease.
For all human-beings this is work and it is ongoing. No one is ever perfect at this, meaning,
not ever having the thought of anger at times or other negative emotions. Holistic healing is
about bounce back time, seeing it coming and immediately correcting the mind to focus on
the positive consciously. It takes work, training and awareness.
Any number of positive healing therapies, modalities and attitudes can assist you and your
family in healing. You can incorporate it into a way of life that makes anything you encounter
in life easier to manage. You can maintain happiness no matter what is happening.
Happiness is the opposite of negative. Joy is the root of happiness when we are in a state of
bliss. We may not be in a state of joy all the time, but happiness means we can be happy
with life even when we are not having a good day because we understand the core of who
we are is grateful and happy for our family and what we have. I feel that this is the basis for a
healthy life and family that can get through anything. The philosophy in which one lives in the
home will also determine the success of a person with a disability and the way in which they
accept themselves being different, their connection to the world and the possibilities they see
for themselves in the future. I can’t state enough how attitudes and life philosophy will make
a difference. Make sure that you know what your philosophy
is and if you don’t think it supports a healthy attitude, start
making changes to help yourself and your family be more
loving and accepting of themselves and others. That will go
a long way in dealing with a disability.

Healing With Feng Shui
By Nancy Kimes
The principles of Feng Shui are synchronized to
enhance the energy of your dwelling whether it is in
your home or office. With ch’i, a flow is created that will
bring about balance, harmony and success. It will also
bring patterns together that align you with your purpose
and healing experiences. Aligning Feng Shui and any
healing modalities that you may be practicing will be
sensed or felt by your clients as well as your self as soon as you walk through that door. It is
important for you, your relationships, and your clients that an atmosphere of comfort, trust
and safety be instilled.
If you are not as busy as you would like to be or have not drawn the clientele you were
hoping for, try this. Now this may sound a little strange if you haven’t done this before but let
me tell you it is a powerful exercise! In the beginning of your practice and occasionally
during a long-time practice students or clients do not show up for their class or their
appointment. These no shows create distress with all the effort put out to create the best
ambiance or circumstances. This has happened to me a few times in my workshops and this
is what I did. You can do this also.
Instead of being angry or thinking this was a waste of time, sit in quiet meditation and
visualize your classroom full of people that are anxious to hear what you have to say. Bring
yourself in alignment with the energy of the room along with your intentions. See all needs
met with satisfying results. Go over your outline and major points that you wish to cover. If a
question comes into your mind answer it with integrity. These may be questions that pop in
your mind. Remember, you have just created a room full of people. This exercise may go on
for an hour or so. At the close of the meditation and practice session, acknowledge that you
had a very successful class and thank your spirit helpers for their participation. This is a great
way of declaring your commitment to teach or be effectual in a healing way.
Think about what a door-to-door sales person goes through as he is approaching a new
prospect or house. Imagine for a moment that you are the sales person. With every “no” you
Healing With Feng Shui, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
2
come that much closer to finding the customer who is interested in what you have to offer,
and will most likely become a repeat customer or provide you with several referrals. If the
sales person gave up he/she would not have the encounter or learning experience they
needed to be more apt in their sales ability. Sales, although frustrating and agonizing at
times prepares you for changes… toughens you up. The point is not giving up on your self.
What I am getting at is intention, resolve, and inner strength. Through attainment of the
smaller things in life you prepare yourself for bigger challenges. Healing can come through
by resolving conflicts that you are ready to face and work through. You will learn to be more
assertive and confident in the services you have to offer and your approach overall in life will
be reflective of that.
No matter what kind of healing is needed, you can minimize your stress level working with
the principles of Feng Shui. You have the ability to create new ways of healing relationships,
partnerships, family matters and career opportunities. Study Feng Shui on your own or seek
advice from a practitioner to help guide you in bringing harmony to situations that matter to
you right now. Add your personal touch where needed and focus on the results you would
like to see fulfilled. When requesting a change in someone else always be aware that you
are only in control of changing yourself. If a person other than yourself is ready for the
change it will happen in due time. When there is a lesson to learn it is best that the person
learns from their experiences. This gets their attention and gives them the opportunity to
create change as needed. Just because you don’t like something someone is doing, as an
outsider looking in, you are more inclined to have expectations and you may not always see
what needs to be done to heal the situation. Your insight may not be as visible to them as
they are to you. They may never agree with your view of things. Love them anyway… at a
distance if you have to! If you let them learn their lessons they will most likely not need to
repeat them. This is not so easily understood when wanting the best (your best) for a loved
one. It is easier said than done when trying to rescue others.
So what tools would you need to attract clientele or make them feel more comfortable?
There are two major elements one can use in their healing
space or classroom. Water and Fire… a table fountain and
candle. By adding crystals you also invoke water especially
working with clear quartz crystals. Other stones may invoke
earth energies. Earth energies would give your client adequate
help in feeling grounded as well as to support their health
because the element for Health is Earth.
Water is a great addition because it will help balance the emotions. Fire will burn away stress
Healing With Feng Shui, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
3
that lies in the emotional body. It also creates a warm atmosphere as well as burning away
the affects of negative energy while raising the level of positive energy, snuffing out the
negative vibrations.
Feng Shui will help create the intention for healing with each client that comes to you for your
services. Whether you are a teacher, counselor or in the healing field, Feng Shui will attract
the guidance you need for a successful practice. Feng Shui mixes well with any life purpose
because its profile is to enhance and embrace all the things you want to attract, shift or
change in your life. It is designed to make life lighter, simpler and easier to accomplish the
tasks at hand. It will make things run smoother and your thoughts will be clear as you
become aware of new thought patterns forming because of the shift taking place. The
positive energy creates an alliance between you, your home and your desires.
There are a few things you can do to stimulate and sustain good health. Be thankful, grateful,
aware, patient, practical, and pro-active where your health is concerned. Forming these
thought-provoking ideas will help you appreciate life with the ability to hold on to the faith you
have for a bright future. With faith there is hope. Hope keeps the door open. Hope
transcends into beliefs as you see your intentions shift into place.
Why does change move slowly at times? Because you need to let go of old attitudes, and
clear out or move away from things that no longer serve a purpose in your life. This takes
time for you to accept while growing into new chapters of your
life. Change doesn’t often happen in an instant because of the
preparations needed to accomplish the changes that you desire
and for your highest good. It is not always clear what your highest
good is at the time. By stating an affirmation for your highest
good to surface along with your intention will make all the
difference in the outcome. This statement or affirmation will in fact
bring about new insights or take you in a direction you may never
have considered or thought about before. If given new insights of
information go with it, make it an adventure. Do not give up on
what you have worked so hard to achieve; often when one is on
the brink of giving up, a new dawn awakens. Giving up something
you have been striving for is like giving up on yourself as the only one that gets hurt in the
end is you. So, be patient with yourself and renew your mind to the fact that all things are
possible for those who believe. You need to honor yourself as worthy and capable because
you are!

Your Healing Space
Do you have an office, a spare room or a healing center for your healing practice?
I would like to touch on some practical points for a moment. Many of you are involved in
healing work part-time. And some of you may work in a center rather than in your home. If
the latter is the case, you will probably want to create just the basic set up rather than an
elaborate one. For Feng Shui purposes let me make some suggestions for your table and
healing area. First and foremost you will want to clear the energy in the room to suit your
purposes. Generally burning sage is done but some do not like the pungent smell or may be
allergic to the smoke. If this is the case for you I would suggest using a product like a Sacred
Space or Sage Cleansing Mist Spray. Another product like Doorway Ch’i is also used to keep
negative energies from entering. This oil is generally used at the front door of your home,
office or healing center. Preparing for your healing session is
basic knowledge. The Health area in Feng Shui is generally
located in the center of the room. And, this is where your table
would usually be set up. If that is not possible you can designate
where you place your table and intend the health area be in this
area as well. Affix a ‘daisy wheel’ on the underside (in the middle
of your table). A daisy wheel encompasses all the areas
associated with Feng Shui. Intend through affirmation, prayer or
statement healing for your clients’ highest and best good. Pale
yellow sheets, would also be a nice addition for your table. Add
the appropriate pillows or bumpers needed for your modality. A
meditation would be a nice way to prepare you for your healing work and clear your thoughts
creating an empty vessel from which you can receive information and healing energy without
obstruction.
A Meditation You Can Use… (from Feng Shui Journeys)
This meditation can be used to restore your health or anything that may be impeding or
causing stress. It will help you connect and align to the center of yourself. It will also help you
ground yourself so you will be in the present mode for your clients. This meditation will help
you release lingering ills that have tried to take hold. Sometimes we go through challenging
affects too when getting ready for energy work. Releasing your own toxins is necessary in
being the perfect conduit you want to be.
“… Take several deep breaths relaxing more and more with every breath. Notice any
unusual feelings, stiffness or aches and pains. Allow yourself to be bathed with white or
Healing With Feng Shui, The Reiki Times Vol. 15 Spring Issue 2011
5
golden light descending from the universe. Feel the light descending further beneath your
feet and into the ground, going deeper and deeper until it is rooted and grounded. Continue
the breath in a rhythmic fashion.
Be aware when you breathe in, that it fills every chakra and every major point in your body.
Feel it extend through your whole being radiating through your major organs. As you exhale,
all of the toxins polluting your body escape through the breath.
Your organs are gently massaged with light alleviating built up stress and other blockages
mucking up the flow of fine, clear energy. A gentle release of these foreign and oppressing
particles continues to separate and diminish as you continue to breathe in the light and
exhale the debris. You are cleansing and clearing the body and preparing for new, vibrant
healing energy to replace the old, tired, unhealthy intrusions. Keeping your thoughts pure
and emotions clear will close the door to infestations that invade your body. When you feel a
shift or a change in your energy pattern, it will be time to move
toward a deeper level of healing.
Allow the light to surge through you flushing out any lingering
pain or stubborn obstacles. They are now gone. You can feel a
sense of relief and lightness throughout your whole body. It
radiates with warm rainbow colors. Feel the temperature rise as
the vibrant colors treat the areas that have been causing you
pain, which are now strengthening and maintaining a balance
within the blood, immune system, circulatory system, endocrine
system, tissues, bones and skin as well as all other systems and
organs.
You are receiving a full light-body treatment and divine intervention for restored health at this
time. Spend time now for this treatment to take affect and fill you with vibrant good health.
Spend as much time as possible with this treatment. When it is complete you will feel even
lighter, you will breathe easier and feel an enhanced surge of energy conform to your body,
sustaining and delivering you back to a healthier state. Slowly come back and feel the
activation of a new and healthy you”.
