Letter from Richard (75n) Rossiter to Tobias (22n) of Newbawn. Birmingham October 8th 1846. “My dear Cousin, After nine years absence from my native place I venture to address you as a petitioner it was my intention to have made the appeal contained in this letter to my uncle, but on making some previous inquiries I learned only last week in very great regret that he had been deceased for some time. I am not about to ask you for any s.verely personal favor at least as far as regards myself what I am about to ask upon your kind and generous feeling is of a far more important nature than anything immediately appertaining to my own person. Having procured a ?filivation in this town ...ler than four years ago (which I still hold) I married a country (or Coventry) woman of my own, I have now two children one of those is a very fine little boy of three years old a lovely and promising child it is for this little ..eivered ...... I am going to petition. But I cannot I fear make you clearly understand how very soon the finest youth may in this country become, .......... and lost ........ the means of the peasants

are such as to warte them to give them proper education and keep them within wholesome bounds. But I ?solomonly assure you that in no part of the world does more frightful danger visit to the morals of young persons than in an Englishman's factory town, when the parents are obliged to work for daily bread and to a great degree neglect the children, although against their will. Even schools cannot in all cases keep them as they ought to be in every respect, for although at first they may not be allowed to indulge in actual vice, still all the schools in England will not .... do ....t try to check their detestable feelings which is here agemdered in the child's ......... from almost the dawn of t........en to hate and despise the country which gave those persons birth. Hatred and contempt of Ireland and its people is at the bottom of the heart of every Englishman even the best of them and I grieve to say that when the children of such men as me like cannot through want of means keep their children under strict regulations grow up they show in the same feelings having been bought than by those which with when they have unnecessarily been allowed to ..... of converse. I shall now state the reason why one Irishman here (even though in a ?filivation) cannot give his children the necessary care, in the first place, this town thought extensive in its ............... is one in which men in my department of industry receive very low wages and secondly because an Irishman, let his talents and conduct be ever so good, is obliged to make way for an Englishman in every station of life where high wages might be earned, in a work they give the lucrative employment to their own countrymen the Irish then are forced to accept anything they can get, as otherwise they must remain idle and starve, this may seem strange it is however decidedly here for those reasons then it is out of my power to do what I could wish for my child and this I hope will fully explain my venture for ...ging upon your kindness in the strongest, but most respectful manner, that you would give me a little help for the purpose. It is what I am confident, your father would do were he living and I can hardly admit the thought that you, when you will consider the matter, will refuse me som ........fling, assistance in such a cause. The fact is l am .ienty determined that one day let it be sooner or later my child shall .....en his head in Ireland. Present disappointments may detain but will be a help, will not attienately prevent me from pulling that determination into practice is my most .......... desire then that as he grows up he should under no disgrace to the name he bears, but should carry himself through life so as to give that pleasure to there those blood he undoubtedly shares in which his father unfortunately did not give. With oil..a.dour and humanity there I say my child's case at your .at do entreat now will use what means your kind feelings and generous ?dispeasteous may prompt you to see his relief and as you will one, day have children yourself I do beseech cousin to reserve and secure for them, that blessing which you will have contributed to at L...d to mine this letter will be submitted to you by Mr Anthony for such a gentleman to where I am already under into any obligations and he has kindly promised to give every assistance in carrying out anything that maybe put forward to help my little boy, may I request you will favor me with a reply as soon as your convenience allows. Is my Aunt and all my cousins well you have the goodness to present my warmest and most cordial regards. However they may receive them of whatever they may feel towards one who at one time caused them displeasure and much .ecature, assure them that my good wishes are as fervent and sincere as it is possible for anything human to be. I remain my dear cousin truly and respectively. Yours Richard Rossiter
