DESCRIPTION

The Re:Design Option explores the challenges of different educational building types, and looks at how designers can help reveal the hidden potential of our existing schools. This document looks at how a small rural school could provide civic facilities for the whole community, and link more closely into the ecology of the settlement.

Learning DeckBrightly coloured timbers are laid in a linear pattern creating a distinctive new threshold between the school, the classrooms and the infromal playing spaces to the rear

Integrated Landscape Proposals

The steep landscape to the rear of the school is considered a valuable opportunity to integrate a new spatial threshold. The learning deck and the ‘Stumpery’ strips break down the boundaries between internal and external space and provide a new resource for learning and for observing nature. Timber frames provide a degree of structure in an essentially informal landscape setting.

Change in level is simplified - use of local and site won materials to make large ‘steps’ in the landscape

Learning DeckBrightly coloured timbers are laid in a linear pattern creating a distinctive new threshold between the school and the infromal playing spaces to the rear

Space is given stronger definition - giant shade plants provide year round interest and a leafy ‘pocket’ for exploration and growing

Integrated Landscape Proposals

Strathyre Primary has a wonderful landscape setting and the informal, wild play spaces amongst the trees work well. New proposals define some of the important thresholds between existing and proposed architecture and the informal woodland landscape. Interventions bring colour , play and wildlife together in and around the school and are designed to respond to changes in level and microclimatic opportunities.

Welcome spaces - textured surface - a new ‘doormat’ to the school! The existing under-crofts are transformed into useful storages space with new lockable lattice doors
