Earlier in the week Elisa and I spent some time filling out a bundle of forms and uploading documents, which we were told would speed up the process. But having now attended, I am not so certain that was a true statement. As Tomina and I pulled up to the school I could sense her fear rising. And even if I hadnt she told me as I found a parking spot and turned off the car. I assured her she was safe, and I would stay with her. We made our way hand-in-hand to the school and were greeted on the outside by two enthusiastic students who did a welcome cheer for us. Once inside we found the registration table. There we received a folder of information, a name tag for Tomina and instructions of what to do. Following the instructions, we headed over to the gym and started making our way through the different tables. Some tables were simply to share information or get a gift, whereas others were meant to evaluate Tominas readiness. Some tables had no lines and for some we had to wait. After getting through all the tables, we made our way to the check-out table. It was only there that we met the Kindergarten teacher, who warmly welcomed Tomina and myself. She shared with a bit of enthusiasm her excitement to teach Tomina the following year. At the table we also made sure all our uploaded documents had worked and Tomina got her picture taken. We then made our way to the classroom where Tomina got a cookie (perhaps the highlight for her), we looked around the classroom and headed for home. While all I could think of were ways to make the process more efficient, Tomina loved it. As we walked back to the car that afternoon, Tomina shared that it wasnt so scary. The fears she had when we had come had vanished through the experience. To that end, the orientation was a great success. I have been thinking a lot about the kindergarten orientation, in how it compares to what we do at the church. Now I will be the first to admit I struggle with how to orientate people to the church. April 2018 The Redeemer Reporter KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

— A note from Pastor Ken —

Continued on page 2

This past month Tomina and I went to the Kindergarten orientation. It was something else. Earlier in the week Elisa and I spent some time filling out a bundle of forms and uploading documents, which we were told would speed up the process. But having now attended, I am not so certain that was a true statement.

As Tomina and I pulled up to the school I could sense her fear rising. And even if I hadn’t she told me as I found a parking spot and turned off the car.

Some tables were simply to share information or get a gift, whereas others were meant to evaluate Tomina’s readiness.

As we walked back to the car that afternoon, Tomina shared that it wasn’t so scary. The fears she had when we had come had vanished through the experience. To that end, the orientation was a great success.

I have been thinking a lot about the kindergarten orientation, in how it compares to what we do at the church. Now I will be the first to admit I struggle with how to orientate people to the church. I don’t offer a new member class. When new people come to the church I offer my card and an invitation to get together to talk more. It works for me, but perhaps not for everyone. I have put a lot of time and thought into other ways I could do this, but then I went to kindergarten orientation.

And do you know what. As I wrote earlier we didn’t meet the teacher until the end of our time in the gym. We never met the principal. Yet each time we sat

down we were introduced to someone new. There were teachers, librarians, nurses, parents, other students and more. They all welcomed us and showed a genuine interest in us.

Isn’t that call of the whole church? To welcome people. To orientate people. To invite people into more… I would say yes. After going through kindergarten orientation, I am seeing things differently. As I said, it wasn’t the most efficient process, but Tomina was made to feel welcome and in moving through the process we did her fears disappeared.

There are plenty of people with fears around new experiences and they are often multiplied at church. I wonder what it would be like to think of each Sunday as an orientation day. For that matter to think of every gathering we have as a community as an orientation. Sure, the pastor plays a role in it, but the work is done by us all. It is each of our jobs to welcome and show a genuine interest in whoever comes before us. For that is certainly what Christ offers each of us – and so we might offer to others.

At least those are the thoughts I have after my time at Kindergarten orientation.

Peace,

Jim Valvano led the North Carolina State Wolfpack mens basketball team to the NCAA championship in 1983. Ten years later and diagnosed with terminal cancer, he started the Jimmy V foundation with the motto “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” In his speech accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award, he told the crowd, “To me there are three things we should all do every day. Number one is laugh. Number two is think -- spend some time in thought. Number three, you should have your emotions move you to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it, if you laugh, you think and you cry, that's a heck of a day.” The speech took all of Jimmy V’s energy and he had to be helped from the podium.

Wash , Wipe, & Wear Distribution in

March Much Thanks go to the following folks who assisted in March.

Picker Uppers: Gary and Ruth M.

Sorters: Katie D., Carol G., Marilyn S., Sandy W., and myself. Came back from the diaper bank with a

big roll of saran wrap along with labels to go in each pack. It really went smooth! The diapers stayed

together better and were more compact! And the main thing the diapers were kept sanitary. Will

pick up another roll of Saran at Costco so 2 people can be wrapping at the same time. So the sorters

had a new experience!

Writers: Gale F. and Shirley G. Shirley now has her own special chair donated by Sandy W. Thanks

Sandy! Gale is an "old hand" now at writing!

Baggers: Gale F. and her 2 granddaughters, Cora and Leah, Martina N., Nowela V., and Becky N.

Map Recorder: Leah

Number Passer: Becky N.

Hander Outers: Martina N., Cora, Nowela V., and myself.

Clean-up: This month Cora grabbed a push broom and did a very thorough job of sweeping the

floor. Grandma Gale helped too, along with Dominique and Pacific who came at the end.

As far as needs go for our program we are in need of your recycled grocery bags to pack the products

in and some candy and packages of cookies would be nice also. The folks look forward to the cookies

every month.

Last but not least special thanks go to the Lindemann family for their donation of diapers and

wipes last month. A total of 492 diapers which make 20 packages! Also 216 wipes! Thanks Naomi

for doing that in lieu of presents for yourself!

102 Families were served of which 9 did not take diapers

Diapers: 2,325

Laundry soap: 102

Toilet paper: 408 rolls

Liquid hand soap: 102 (Our extra item of the month)

It always amazes me how things fall into place for our program and how parking spaces just seem

to be waiting, reserved by the Master when picking up all the products! God's hand is evident! Thanks

be to God for all his blessings, and for sending his Son so that we may believe and have eternal life!

In His service, Ruth Makovsky

Ministry of the

Month for April

During the months of March and April we are asking for hygiene items to donate to local schools. These items include: shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush or comb, deodorant or other toiletries. Trial sizes are also appreciated. We’ll have containers in the

fellowship hall and sanctuary for collection. Many students go without these necessities and love receiving them from their school.

Thank you, Kari Spencer
