Not unless a skater wants to spend some quality time in the penalty box!There are plenty of legal ways to send an opponent flying into the third row but, to keep the game play safe and competitive, there are rules governing how and when players can make contact with each other. Throwing elbows, pushing or tripping opposing skaters, and “clothes-lining” opponents by linking arms with your teammate are among the prohibited actions that can earn skaters a minute in the penalty box. Like other sports, more serious offenses like fighting or intentional tripping can get a skater kicked out of the game.

Other common penalties and their referee signals include:

Back Blocking (Blocking to the Back)- Hitting an opponent in the back of the torso, back of the legs, or back of the booty. Referee hand signal:

Blocking to the Head/High Blocking- Hitting an opponent above the shoulders

Low Blocking- tripping or intentionally falling in front of another skater. Any contact which lands on an opponent’s feet or legs, below the legal target zone, that causes the skater to stumble or fall is con-sidered tripping and/or low blocking.

Use of Elbows- When engaging another skater, elbows may not be swung with a forward/backward motion. When engaging another skater, elbows may not be swung with upward or downward motion. The elbow must be bent while blocking with that arm. Contact may not be made exclusively with the point of the elbow (i.e. jabbing). Elbows may not be used to hook an opposing skater in any way (e.g. by wrap-ping one’s arm around an opponent’s arm).

Out of Play- actions occurring in front of and/or behind the legal Engagement Zone and for actions that illegally destroy the pack. All actions are to be penalized equally regardless of position (Blocker vs. Jammer). Out of play actions include but are not limited to blocking, assisting, destroying the pack, failure to reform a pack, and failure to return to the Engage-ment Zone.

Use of Forearms/Hands- Forearms or hands may never be used to grab, hold, or push an opponent.

Cutting the Track- Skaters that are out of bounds must find an entrance back in bounds

that does not require in bounds skaters to move. When out of bounds, skaters must re-enter the track without bettering their position in relation to other skaters.

Skating Out of Bounds- No part of the skater’s skate(s) may touch the ground outside the track boundary. Skaters may not pick up momentum for a block until in bounds

As promised in the January Red Wire, the survey has been prepared so you, the fans, can sound off on what you would like to see or in some cases- see less of. We also want to provide a the best “roller derby” experience possible to bring you back bout after bout!

Seasoned Skater Profile: Motion 2 StrikeHerRed Wire (RW): What did your life consist of before derby? Motion 2 StrikerHer (M2S): My life is the same now as it was before derby except that I may now throw my body into other women without the threat of being arrested!

RW: How did you get immersed into the awesome sport that is roller derby? M2S: As a teenager I was an absolute “rink rat.” It had probably been a good ten years since I had put skates on my feet when one of my best friends and former teammates invited me to a bout. Although I had no clue what was happening on the track in front of me, one thing was for sure: I HAD to get skates back on. So I took the plunge.

RW: What is your favorite aspect of the sport? M2S: The comradery. I joined a squad but I gained a family. It’s learning how to use

one’s strengths, improve one’s weaknesses, and de-pend upon one’s derby sisters on and off of the track.

RW: How many years have you been playing? M2S: This will be my second season, so about 1.5 years.

RW: Most memorable moment: M2S: At the end of my rookie season, being voted “Rookie of the Year” and “Most Improved Blocker” by my derby sisters.

RW: How do you spend your time outside of derby? M2S: I’m mommy to 4-year old Matthew, wife to incredibly supportive Jesse, and supervising attor-ney at the Lakewood Ranch location of Adams & Diaco, P.A. Time? What time?

RW: What is your prediction/expectation for the 2012 season? M2S: We have an incredible group of new, young

girls joining us and I see a revitalizing, rebuilding season ahead of us. This is a time for our squad to shine, to show our ferocity and love of the sport.

RW: Right before a bout, what song are you blasting to get yourself pumped up? M2S: Usher – YEAH!

RW: Anything you would like to say to the fans? M2S: Your support is what makes us suc-cessful – keep screaming!

RW: What position do you play? Do you enjoy this position? If not, what would you like to play? If you like it, why do you like the position? M2S: I’m a blocker and I LOVE it! It’s a challenge, it’s a game… “don’t pass me, and if you do I’ll chase you down!” I jam every now and then but I really have a passion for blocking!

RW: What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge? M2S: My biggest challenge is probably also

my biggest asset: I want to be the best. I want to feel derby, I want to breathe derby, I want to know what I’m going to do before even I know I’m going to do it. Problem is, when I fail (and one must fail to improve) I have a hard time getting past the failure and seeing the silver lining, which is that I must fail to learn, and now I’ve learned.

RW: Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by? M2S: There are so many, depending on the day, the week, the month, the particu-lar bout. But the overarching theme to my life is “Just DO it.”

RW: Professional/education background? M2S: I’ve been practicing law for nearly 5 years in the fields of insurance defense, plaintiff’s personal injury, and social security/disability and am currently supervis-ing attorney at the Lakewood Ranch location of Adams & Diaco, P.A.

RW: Have you played any other sports? If yes, what sport and for how long? M2S: I’ve never played another sport in any organized fashion. Goes to show, I must have a passion for this one!

Behind the Track Profile: ProseHack

Red Wire (RW): What did your life consist of before derby? ProseHack (PH): It wasn’t all that different. Derby was a stress reliever. RW: How did you get im-mersed into the awesome sport that is roller derby? PH: It is a legendary story that has been told many times. I learned about the Bradentucky Bombers from a seminary intern at my church who was trying out to be the announcer. Yes, the infamous Reverand Killjoy (who is an actual ordained minister now and still announces for Killa-mazoo) encouraged me to give it a try. God loves derby girls (and guys) too!

RW: What is your favorite aspect of the sport? PH: It’s really challenging, and the great thing about derby is that it doesn’t have a stereotypical athlete type. Big, small, tall, short – all have something to offer. The worst hit I ever took was from a 90 lb. girl who slammed me perfectly right under my ribs. RW: How many years have you been playing/or a part of roller derby? PH: I played for three full seasons before getting injured pretty badly. I’m still not cleared for full contact, so I was a referee all of last season and will referee this season too.

RW: Most memorable moment: PH: Wow. That’s a tough one! I think it is when we played Greater Jacksonville at their house. Mia Psycho and I were the captains of the new Nuclear Bombshell team (I came up with that name!) and it was an incredibly brutal game. The floor was impossible and the skill level of the team we were playing was not what we were expecting. However, I saw our team really rise to the occasion. We were get-ting killed, but we never gave up. We really meshed as a team that night. My sec-ond most memorable game was the one where I skated after being told by my doc-

tor that there was a good chance I had a brain tumor. Yeah…it was an interesting night!

RW: How do you spend your time outside of derby? PH: First and foremost, I am the mom to the most incredible 10 year old on the planet and I love spending time with her. I also own a marketing firm, and that keeps me pretty busy. Other than that, I coach the Bradenton

Derby Brats Junior Roller Derby Team, volunteer with Manatee County Citizens Review (we conduct child abuse hearings for the court), take a dance class, and serve the Bradentucky Bombers as a Board Member and a New Recruit Trainer. I also like to cook.

RW: What words of encouragement can you offer to those who would like to join the sport, whether skater, ref or NSO? PH: The biggest piece of advice I can give is to not think about what you are doing (joining a full-contact sport where you could get hurt) and just come out and do it! If we waited for the safest opportunity we’d never do anything!

RW: Right before a bout, what song are you blasting to get yourself pumped up? PH: Motley Crue’s “Saints of Los Angeles.”

RW: Anything you would like to say to the fans? PH: Thanks for the support as both a skater and a referee over the years. Fans really help motivate us to do better!

RW: As a ref, what does your job entail? PH: It’s a multi-faceted job. You have to watch and listen to what is going on with 10 skaters on the track and then make a split second decision whether or not some-thing was legal, incidental, or illegal. And did I mention you have to do all of this while skating with your eyes on the track with a bunch of other referees skating in the same area? Hardest part? Dealing with skaters who look at referees and NSOs like they are “second class” citizens. The game can’t be played without us, and hon-estly, it is a lot harder referee the game than actually play it.

RW: What role do you play behind the track? (Ref, NSO, Coach, Trainer, etc.) PH: Referee and New Recruit Trainer.

RW: Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by?

RW: Professional/educational background – PH: Meh….…I went to a great university and got a couple of degrees. I got started on my career professionally at 14 with this incredible newspaper re-porting gig, so I’ve worked a long time now. I’ve spent my entire career in Journalism, Advertising, and Marketing.

RW: Have you played any other sports? If yes, what sport and for how long? PH: Yes, I’ve played competitive volleyball, basketball, and softball. I also dance (ballet, jazz, and tap) and jog.
