Earth First! is a philosophy of resistance, not a national organization or group. All you need to do to be an Earth

First!er is to agree with the general principlesof Earth First! The battle cry of Earth First! isNo compromise in defense of Mother Earth, which means that we will not compromise ourvalues and morals when fighting to protectthe environment, and we wont take halfa clearcut forest over an intact ecosystem(coughSierra Clubcough). It also meansthat we will protect wilderness and theenvironment by any means necessary, fromrowdy protests and sit ins, to letter writing, tree sits, road blockades and the use of theever elusive monkey wrench. We believe indirect action and in not compromising withthose who destroy our earth for profit. Wealso believe in biocentrism and deep ecology, that all life and ecosystems have inherentvalue beyond their usefulness to humans.Ecosystems and wild places have the rightto exist for their own sake, not because wewant to use them or conserve them. Theseare some of the basic tenants of Earth First!

but the philosophy is constantly evolving. From a historical perspective, Earth First!,

in its current form, star ted up in the southwestin the late 1970s, and has since evolved intoan international movement fighting on manyfronts. EF! Has popularized many creative

tactics in wilderness defense such as tree sits, long term road blockades, tree spiking, hunt

sabotage, and plenty of nighttime activities. The primary method of communication is theEarth First! Journal, a bi-monthly magazinewhich is currently put out by a collective inTucson, AZ (www.earthfirstjournal.org).There is also a national rendezvous twicea year of EF!ers to come together and sharestories and skills, plan future campaigns andhave a good time in the woods (this summerthe rendezvous will be in Cascadia). Groupsform and function autonomously, often basedon their bioregion or a specific campaign. InColorado, the last EF! groups which wereoutwardly active existed in the late 90s as par tof vigorous campaigns against the expansionof ski areas into critical lynx habitat. HCEF!is an attempt to revive the wild spirit ofresistance in this part of the Rockies and

bring folks out of the woods who until nowmay have been operating as lone wolves.

HCEF! is a network of smaller EF!groups throughout the state from Denverand the Front Range, to here in the GrandValley/Western Slope, all the way to thefour-corners area and back again. Withfocuses on the oil and gas industries, theclean coal movement (new plants/mines),uranium mining/milling, the I-70 expansionand stopping urban sprawl, and of course

protecting wildlife and their ecosystems. If you are interested in getting involved

    BOOK REVIEW

Published by PM Press, Victoria Lawsfirst book, Resistance Behind BarsThe Struggles of Incarcerated Women,

takes a poignant look at the history and issuessurrounding women in prison. An oftenoverlooked reality in our culture, Laws 288-

page book seeks to raise awareness to thelives and struggles of incarerated womenacross the country. With many first-handaccounts of disrespect, neglect, and abuse(physical/mental/sexual/emotional),ResistanceBehind Bar paints a picture that something isdeeply wrong with the way we, as a society,(mis)treat imprisoned people, especiallythe needs of women, which are not usuallyconsidered when thinking about prisoners.

However, this book isnt just a pity party thrown to lament the woes of womenin the prison industrial complex. ResistanceBehind Bars brings to light the many waysin which women struggle against the systemfor more humane living conditions. Manyissues, such as access to education/work

opportunities, adequate and affordablehealthcare, and family contact/visitationhave been fought for inside prison, regardlessof known reprecussions and punishment.

Law seeks to discount the generalassumption by academics and prison activistsalike that women in prison merely accepttheir conditions and do nothing to changeit. While many prison riots and proteststhat occur in mens prisons may be oftenknown about or covered in the media, similarincidents in womens facilities fail to getthe same media attention. In addition todirect action, many women also exhaust theofficial procedures to combat mistreatment.

Complete with numerous helpful endnotes, a glossary, and a sectionon resourcesfor incarceratedwomen, ResistanceBehind Bars offersthe public a newand realistic lookinto the lives ofthe forgotten andthe oppressed.

    HOUSING FIRST! NO MORE DEATHS!

T e Red Pill has been covering homelessssues for many years. Finally,Grand Junction is seeing movement

rom and for the homeless community. ACall to Action has been distributed by theHousing First! No More Deaths! campaign, and the city put fuel on the fire last week.

On Monday June 29th, the City ofGrand Junction tried to pass two emergencyordinances outlawing soliciting, also

known as flyin a sign or spanging. Whatstopped the city from moving forward withthese ordinances was a strong, large, and loudgroup of homeless people, younger radicalsand other concerned community members.

No one came to support the proposal, and over a hundred people came to opposeit. Solidarity NotCharity (our FNBout here in GJ)

provided foodand water servingon City Hallslawn. Live tuneswere provided bylocal band FastFood Kings andout-of-townersChicken Little.

The ACLUsent a letter to theCity Council just hours before the meetingstating the ordinances unconstitutionalityand its underlying intent to criminalizean entire class of people. The commentsmade from housed or non-housed folkstouched on many of the same subjects.

The city voted unanimously againstone statute and 5-to-2 in favor of the otherone, but since they were trying to pass theselaws without the usual democratic process

they needed to pass unanimously. The citywill now begin the process of bringing theseordinances through the proper process.

While people ate food and listenedto the music outside of city hall, otherswere speaking to the council. A bannerappeared on an adjacent buildingthat read We are Everywhere.

Those in opposition held signsduring the meeting saying things likeHomelessness is not illegal. God Bless.and Will Work For Free Speech. andAsking For Help is Free Speech. Theyalso booed and cheered and were, accordingto the GJPD Sergeant, relatively civil.

The grandest victory at this eventwas that many people felt empoweredand started to see some hope. It showeda lot of people on the street that it

really is possible if we stand together.Little did the city know, a coalition

of radicals and homeless people had beenforming quietly for months, and were aboutto start publicly organizing and agitatingfor necessary reforms. Housing First! NoMore Deaths! had its first generally meetingon Tuesday July 7 in Whitman Park.

The homeless, the activists, the localmedia, the concerned spiritual community

and many others from all walks of lifemade up the over 70 attendants. Themeeting was filled with community

building, cheering, excitement, diversity,a sense of action-ready-to-happen, andit made for a great start to the campaign.

Housing First! No More Deaths!introduced theirfour demands:

    No More Deaths!Housing First!Housing Now!Homelessness is

Not Illegal!Housing, food, water and medicalcare are basicHuman Rights!

    Theyalso encouraged those suffering from

police harassment, which usually takes theform of petty tickets, to plead not guiltyto all charges in hopes of clogging theunjustice system. One man had four ticketsin his wallet, and claimed to have three morein his other wallet. He said that he plans to

plead not guilty to all of the charges. TRPalso found that he plead not guilt y, and someof the ticket were immediatly thrown out.

The group also plans on attendingCity Council meetings every otherMonday and Wednesday at 7pm at CityHall in order to educate through publiccomment and keep the issues fresh inour leaders minds. They also plan onhaving workshops/ski ll-shares in the parkto educate themselves and the community.

With over 70 people in attendence atthe first meeting, most of the local mediain town, a srong spirit of resistance, and thedesperate need to get the four demands met,the kick-off to the Housing First! No MoreDeaths! campaign was a huge success. The

school which our organization, Common Ground, was using for a base of operations.decided to write and record some songs on it during my stay. Heres the lyrics, in
