T he popularity of skating is on therise, and it is the only form oftransportation for many people.

But is it even legal? The fog is clearingaround the issue of skateboarding inGrand Junction, and, as the sun peaksthrough, repression rears its ugly head.

Skateboarding is pretty much illegalin Grand Junction. Almost everywhere.Skateboarding prohibited andskateboarding in the street are crimes. G.J.activists have seen a rise in their shareof justice for skateboarding crimesover the past year. By rise, wemean 2 fold, plus, for some.

    Last spring,a skateboarding

prohibited ticket wasissued to RichardCrespin on Main Street. It resulted in a $50 fine.Last June, multipleskating tickets were

issued. Many resulted inconfiscation of property(including skateboards), tendays in jail and almost $1100in fines for skate crimes andtrumped up charges of disregarding

police. Repression is on the rise.In early June, tickets were issued to

three participants in G.J.s local CriticalMass Community Bike/Skate Ride. Thecriminals were charged with disregarding

police and skating in the street. One arresteenever showed to court, Chris Dallas receivedten days in jail suspended for one year andover $600 in fines, and Steve Kilcrease

received ten days in jail and $1100 in fines.Their property was confiscated, includingskateboards of all three arrestees, and a black

flag (which was non present on the propertyreport, let alone returned to its owner).

The court gave Chris and Steve the sameconsequences as resisting arrest for the chargeof disregarding police (ten days, Steves $1000fine). The arre stees, however, were compliantwith the police. They provided the GJPDwith the required identification informationand used their right to remain silent.

Later in June, two G.J. activistsagain were charged with skateboarding

prohibited. GJPD officers arrestedChris Dallas and Richard Crespin.

Skates were confiscated andfines increased to $100.

    Harassment of thisparticular group continued

after the tickets wereissued. Some of thegroup encountered the GJImpact Team (officers on

    bikes), including OfficersKennedy (notoriously

known harasser of thehomeless) and Rojo. The

officers approached thegroup (who were on bikes

because their skates weretaken), saying something like,

Look, if it isnt our favorite skaters.Harassment did not cease in the court

room for defendant Steve Kilcrease. Thecourt proceeding was not recorded, as mostare at the municipal level. Officers Rojo andDole, arresting officers for Critical Mass,

provided ample information on one of thearrestees past interactions with the GJPD.While on the stand, the police mentioned thatSteve was wearing shoes in a past interaction

    LET THEM EAT CAKEFROM

    BY SEAN MCNEAL

et them eat cake. So said MarieAntoinette, right before the starving peasants of France separated her head

from the rest of her overdressed personage.Today in a park in Grand Junction, Colorado,

I witnessed hundreds of homeless people liningup to eat cake.

It was good cake, It was chocolate cake withfancy frosting.

I ate two pieces. There was other foodas well.

There are nostarving peasants inAmerica, but there arehundreds of peoplelined up to eat cake.

Neither theDauphine of France, the Government of theUnited States, nor theCity of Grand Junction

    provided the aforementioned cake.

It was provided bya group of Christians,

presumably becauseman does not live by

    bread alone.The police in

America are fighting awar on poverty.

    John Gotti andCarlos Escabar are

    both in Prison.John Dillenger is

    Dead.So, with crime

out of the way the police are now free to pursuetheir real purpose; defending Capitalism and

maintaining the status quo.Unlike mamby pamby liberals, the police

are attacking poverty at its source. Namely poorpeople.

Just as all right thinking Americans knowthat the banking crisis was caused by illegalimmigration and the collapse of the car industrywas the result of same-sex marriage.

So, do they also know, that the way toeliminate poverty is to criminalize the poor.

This has been proven by our war ondrugsimprison drug users and you eliminatedrug use. This policy has been so successful, thatit only makes sense to use this proven strategy inour war on poverty.

The law prohibits both the rich and thepoor from sleeping under

bridges, therefore thelaw is just. This is aline from a French satirewritten before the FrenchRevolution. Its intentionwas to shame the rich intotreating the poor fairly.

When humordidnt work, the poorstarted cutting off heads.

    Just somethingto think about.ARISE

Your guess is asgood as mine.

with fuck the police writtenon them.Steves past criminal history was discussed. However the judge would not hear past

behavior of the police toward the arrestees(stolen solidarity flag, harassment). The judgealso told Steve that he was inciting a riot onMain Street, a clear falsity to a Critical Mass

participant. Steve was not given the standard24 hours to turn himself in to serve jail time

because the judge didnt think he would turnhimself in. He never expected to go to

jail, but was taken straight thereafter court. The judge was alsofrightened abouthis questionableuse of the firstamendment. Why weretheseGJ

SKATING FROM FIRST PAGE activists treated so poorly inour so-called Justice System?

The situation the GJPD createdwhen skates were finally returned to theirowners is best described as a cluster-fuck.The clearly labeled skates were returnedto the wrong people time and again. And the black flag was never returned.

The GJPD are targeting local skaters, especially skaters who are associated withalternative politics. Steve told TRP he has

been skating since he was eight years old in

Grand Junction, in the street or elsewhere, and he never had interactions with policeuntil he started hanging out with folks from

a collective house in town: enter alternative politics. There are multiple Critical Massorganizations in town, but this is the only

one that has been targeted. It comes downto associations, said Chris. Anyone who

looks differently or involves themselveswith alternative politics, or anyone

who asserts their rights when dealingwith the GJPD are targeted groups.

What should you do if you arecharged with skating? Well, pleadnot guilty, demand a jury trial, anddo not quit skating. [The arrest]slowed me down, but it didnt stopme, said Chris reassuringly. Stevesaid, It just seems like such a smallthing to slow you down from doingsomething that you love, or that youneed to do to get around. So, you can

attend City Council meetings to expressyour disgust with the criminalization of

skating and the targeted arrests by the GJPD.Write letters, tell your friends, and plead notguilty. Steves advice is, Skate or die!

    TIME TO BOYCOTT ISRAEL

I remember watching the first intifada onTV in the 80s. I was moved by the braveryof Palestinians dashing in front of tanks to

throw concrete chunks at invading Israeli tanks. This is actually a good lesson in the military

balance of power in the whole mess. Israelhas tanks, cannon, attack helicopters, fighter

planes and bombers, as well as an entire navalfleet, including submarines. The Palestinianshave rocks and home-made bombs and rockets.

At the Presidents first press conference, good ol reporter Helen Thomas threw a fast

ball at Obama. While we speculate aboutwhether Iran will be able to develop a crudenuclear weapon in the next ten years, what canyou tell us about any middle eastern countrythat already has an arsenal of nukes? sheasked. Obama looked like he saw a ghost, thenquickly regrouped and deftly proceeded tospeak without addressing the question at hand.

Israeli nuclear engineer at whistle blower, Moroecai Vanunu disclosed thatIsrael not only possesses nuclear weapons, they have a secret heavy breeder reactorfacility in the desert near Dimoma. Thecorrect answer to Thomas question is thatnot only is Israel the ONLY Middle Eastern

country to possess nuclear weapons, theyare a nuclear powerhouse. This open secretis amazing to those who have experiencewith Israeli public relations juggernaut.

By the way, you may be wonderingwhere the Palestinians are able to get theirhands so readily around concrete chunksto throw. The answer is ugly; nearly every

block in Gaza and the West Bank hasseveral homes that were torn down by IsraeliArmy soldiers driving big American-made

bulldozers in a little something Israel callscollective punishment, that is, destroying thehouses of a convitgo (stonethrowers mother).

Still the Palestinians live, breath andtry to fight back. Even though Israel is

stealing their water. Even though Israel is building a huge security wall that dwarvesthe Berlin Wall at its peak. The situation is

pretty bleak day to day for Palestinians. Whatis there for the average American to do?

For starters, educate yourself. ReadMearscheiner and Walts The Israeli Lobbyand U.S. Foreign Policy. Then googleMordecai Vanunu. This will open more thanenough informational windows to get started.

Started with what you may ask? Why,with the economic boycott of Israel. Itworked in the South Africa divestiture ofthe 70s and 80s and would likely work aswell as a nonviolent weapon against Israel.

W e are all i mmigrants in some sense, especially if you are of the whitemajority. Its time to show some

solidarity and get active in your community.

In early October, a youth-organizedimmigration reform march swept our littlecity. The march, followed by a rally atSherwood Park, was organized by youngimmigration activists in accordancewith the presentation of comprehensiveimmigration reform legislation.

Thats right. Young folks areorganizing demonstrations in G.J.

The spirited marchers included youngand old, entire families, solo flyers, activistsand immigrants, in solidarity for muchneeded reform. No one! No one! No oneis illegal! and Que queremos? Reforma

migratoria! Cuando? Ahora! werechanted to passing motorists and standerbys.

TRP talked to organizer DanielTalavera. Daniels inspiration for organizing

is hearing all the stories of struggle; tornfamilies, unimaginable sacrifice, standingon the brink of death. Daniel says it is morethan just a border. He couldnt be more right.

The US spent over $35 billion on borderpatrol and ICE since 1994. This massive riseon the militarizat ion of the border has createdno solutions and many problems. Over thenext 20-25 years, the US could spend up to$49 billion on the wall alone. The wall hasonly made it more dangerous for people tocross the fictitious line in ever-increasingtreacherous territorythe desert. Weve lost

    COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

over 5,000 people in the desert since 1994.Each individual has their own story,

their story of struggle. One organizer sharedher story to the crowd of about 80 at the rally. She and her family rejoined her father in theUS in 2001. When she was a senior in highschool, her eyes were opened to the injusticeimmigrants face in this country ever day.

Nadia wanted to go to university, but wasfaced with criticism and harassment at school, and roadblocks and obstacles along the road.

An immigrant, seeking higher education?was the reaction of many. With supportfrom her community, Nadia was able to goto university and overcome these obstacles.

Nadia reminds us that there are countlessstories of this constant struggle, and thatwe must unite ourselves if we want to seechange. Its time to come out of the shadows.

This injust ice has to stop, said Daniel. To contact these rad organizers,

    GRAND JUNCTION POLICESSPANISH PHRASE BOOK

The Police here in Grand Junction havefor a long time been able to do whateverthey want with little or no oversight

by the community. Skateboarders, Latinos, poor people, and political activists have longknown that the police have grudges theysettle with force or through the justice system.

Recent arrests and firings of two GJPDofficers for beating a woman and raping awoman, Courtney Crooks and Glenn Coyne, respectively, are just the tip of the iceberg.

Former Police Chief Bill Gardnerresigned this fall, because of another casethat was successfully kept off the pagesof the newspapers. It involved nine GJPDofficers beating a woman in her own house, and then charging her with felony assaulton an officer, she threatened to sue the PDand an agreement was reached, which dropped the lawsuit and thecharges. The victim is still tootraumatized by the incident, she just wants to put it

    behind her, but we as

    citizens needto know what

    happened inthat incident.

    TheGJPD isnotoriouslysecretive and

    non-transparent.

    Multiple openrecords requestshave been denied,

or simplyignored. Theprocessfor peopleto makecomplaintsabout the

    department isnot open oraccessible.

EMAND PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OVERSIGHTOF THE GRAND JUNCTION POLICE

No hotline, No form, No advocate outside ofthe Police Department. To make a complaintyou have to go to the station and into alocked corridor and into a locked room andmake a complaint to an uniformed officer.

The Police also have a long history ofselectively enforcing petty laws against the

poor and homeless of this town. Smokingin the Park Tickets are only issued tohomeless people. Forty-nine percent ofwalking-violations are issued to homeless

people. While houseless people representmaybe two percent of the citys population.

Latino and Immigrant Rightsorganizations have long noticed a trend ofracial profiling in a way that violates therights of Latinos, here in the Grand Valley.

This past July, the homeless activistgroup, Housing First! No More Deaths!exposed two undercover police that hadinfiltrated their organization, disguisedas homeless people. The harassmenthas continued. At the end of September,GJPD, arrested an organizer for the

organization at a public meeting for a pettywarrant, in a calculated act of politicalintimidation to the others at the meeting.

The GJPD, is also trigge r happy when itcomes to the use of Tasers. Tasing people fornoncompliance or while running away, whenits intended use was for self-defense short ofa firearm. Documents requested relating tothe PDs use of Tasers have been ignored.

Only public hearings about the GJPDwill provide a true picture of how the policeare interacti ng with our community. And onlycitizen oversight will keep the organizationhonest and just. Contact these people. Demandcitizen oversight and public hearings.
