RABBINIC
REFLECTION
CONGREGATIONSHAAREY
ZEDEK.WWWSHAAREYZEDEKORG
young boy had jus t got ten his dri ving permit . He aske d his
father, who was a rabbi, if they could discuss his use of the
family car. His father took him into his study and said, Ill
make a deal with you. You bring up your grades, study Talmud a little,
get your hair cut and then we will talk about the car. After about amonth, the boy came back. They again went into the study where the
father said, Son, I am very proud of you. You have brought your grades
up, you have studi ed the Talmud diligently, but you have not yet gotten
your hai r cut .
The young man waited a moment and then replied, You know
Dad, I have been thinking. If you will remember, famous figures like
Noah, Samson, and even Moses had long hair. The rabbi thought for a
moment and replied, Yes, my son, and theywalked everywhere they
went!
Indeed, there is a lot of walking that takes place in the Torah,
especially in the days leading up to receiving the commandments at
Mount Sinai. It is in Exodus Chapters 19 and 20 that individual families
become cemented into a nation of people with a common
background and belief system, the anniversary which we celebrate on
Shavuot, Sat urday night May 26, Sunday May 27 and Monday May 28,
2012 (Monday is also Yizkor).
As the Biblical text teaches - on the third new moon after the
Israelites had gone forth from the Land of Egypt, the people entered
the wilderness of Sinai and Moses disappears into the heavens to
receive the Torah. While the people were encamping opposite the
mountain, Moses went up to God to express the peoples readiness to
carry out what had been destined for them since the days of Abraham
and Sarah. Yet, Moses quickly comes back down the mountain without
the Torah in hand. He then summons all the elders of the people to
ask them if they were willing to make a commitment to living a life of
Torah and mitzvotwith all their hearts and souls. Having secured the
peoples consent in one voice (probably the last time our people
spoke in one voice) Moses goes back up the mountain.
Whi le atop Mount Sinai the second time Moses assures God tha t
the people can handle the weight of the commandments. Then, God
asks Moses to once again go down the mountain - this time in order
to instruct the people to prepare themselves physically and spiritua
for the coming Revelation.
Accord ing to God s command, Moses returns to the people (s
wit hout the Torah) and warns them to gua rd their pur ity, do th
laundry and wash all their clothes in anticipation of God coming dowfrom on high with the Torah, a moment to be ushered in by a lo
blast of the Shofar.
At this point, God descends the mountain - not yet to give t
Torah - but to cal l Moses to once aga in return to the top of Mou
Sinai. And just as Moses reaches the zenith for the third time in thr
days, God immediately sends him back down the mountain to wa
the people not to come any closer to the mountain than they alrea
are. The Almighty then tells Moses that he must come back with
brother Aaron at his side for it is at that point - that they will actua
receive the Torah.
What is God trying to accompli sh by sending Moses up and dow
the mountain so many times? Is Moses being tested? Why would G
put Moses through this exercise in futility? Perhaps this is to show th
in pursuing anything that is important or meaningful to us - there
almost always a series of ups and downs in the process (literally!)
other words, sometimes we must descend in order to ascend!
Menachem Mendel of Kotzk explains that when Moses w
physically standing on Sinai, it was clear that he was not fully prese
emotionally or spiritually. Moses, like all of us, needed to know th
physically going up to Sinai was not enough - he had to have his he
(body, mind and spirit) in the game.
It is in this way that the holiday of Shavuot reminds us throu
Moses mountain travels that we must seriously examine all of o
interactions and realize the importance of being completely prese
and in the momentin whatever we do.
And so, as we celebrate the Revelation of Torah again this yea
let us not only emphasize the majesty of the moment at Sinai - b
may we soon learn to temper the plethora of distracti ons and focus
what is real ly most importa nt in our lives - today, tomorrow and alwa

o you remember those ancient communication
devices called Palm Pilots? I will admit to having been
a user. Among my favorite features of this personal
digital assistant was the opportunity to beam programs to
another user; the recipient of the beam would receive a
message saying, Do you want to accept ______? S/he then
accepted or rejected the beam. Well, I loved going around
beaming a particular programthe Torahto anyone with a
Palm Pilot. Do you want to accept the Torah? they were asked.
Brilliant.
Technology changes qui ckly, and it has the abi lit y to
transform society. For centuries the Torah was transmitted from
handwritten scroll to handwritten scroll, making it nearly
impossible for the average person to obtain. Scrolls ultimately
gave way to the printed book, made accessible thanks to the
invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg.
Suddenly, accessibility to the Torah increased exponentially. With the advent of the computer and eventual ly the internet ,
sacred scripture again grew in availability. It took 18 months to
sell the first million Palm Pilots, giving the opportunity to
vi rtual ly anyone to hold the Torah in the palm of the thei r hand.
It took only 24 hours to sell the first millions iPhone 4ss, with
hundreds of apps and e-books offering the opportunity to read
the Hebrew Bible. The Torah is, indeed, everywhere.
On May 27 and May 28 of this year we will celebrate the
holiday of Shavuot, commemorating our ancestors acceptance
of the Torah at Sinai. Do you want to accept the Torah? they
were asked. Acknowledging their des ire , the beam wascompleted and we today are inheritors of their wise decision.
More than that, though, the Torah sits literally at our fingertips,
waiting for us to open the book or hi t the on-switch. The Torah
is available in bookstores and in our library. It is available on
the internet and as e-books. We can download it to our
iPhones and iPads. Technology has transformed our society, but
have we allowed it to transform our lives? Ancient truths, sacred
obligations and timeless wisdom wait for us in the pages of our
sacred scriptures if only we take the time to open ourselves up.
If I may be of any assistance in helping you to access our
tradition, please contact me.

deeper and more meaningful opportunities for children and famili
to engage in Jewish life. In line with this effort, we are now in t

committee chairman and board member, Jeff Linden, Rabbi Aaro
Starr and Megan Topper along with a committee of volunteers. Belo
is a summary of our accomplishments and current work:
Curriculum Committee: The committee is curren
considering a redesigned curriculum which will
thematically integrated. This will allow for great
depth of learning in each of the content areas an
create time for addressing other Religious Scho

Religious School Taskforce: The committee is
