Dad’s chest pains began when he was in his 50’s, forcing him to limit theactivities he loved so much, and to stop working. Several physicians wereunable to significantly help him. Not feeling well made him an unhappypharmacist.

While mother was visiting a local health store, the book, “Vitamin E: Your Key to a Healthy Heart”caught her interest. It talked about the extensive clinical work of the Shute Medical Clinic of Canadaand the work of Doctors Evan and Wilfrid Shute with vitamin E and heart related problems. Mother and Dad immediately went to see Doctor Evan Shute who examined him, and suggested a specific type of vitamin E. But Dad returned with a long face because he didn’t believethat the bottle of vitamin E was any different from any other vitamin E in his pharmacy.

But, in less than 3 weeks, Dad was back to work. He looked and felt noticeably better. I rememberhim bouncing down the stairs proclaiming that he felt like he was 21 again. “Dad, slowdown,” I exclaimed “Don’t act it.” And we laughed.

But then something happened that astounded us: Dad’s pains returned. Once again he was talkingabout his pains and was forced to stop working. He was still taking vitamin E; he had just opened anew bottle. After four days of not feeling well and the pain having returned, Dad telephoned Doctor Shute and was asked to read the vitamin E bottle label. Dr. Shute simply told Dad “Take the vitamin E that I recommended”, and explained some of the product differences to him.

This made us realize there was a difference in the forms of vitamin E. All vitamin E was not all thesame. We became concerned because it was so important to Dad that he could be sure of consistentresults. It was then, with Dad’s guidance, we began planning to make our own vitamin E for our family and friends.

When Carlson Laboratories became a reality, we committed ourselves to offering only the highestquality vitamin E, which would consistently provide the best results. We were convinced then, as now, that natural vitamin E is superior to synthetic; so since our beginning in 1965, ALL Carlson vitamin E supplements have been only 100% natural-source vitamin E and 100% potency.

One thing hasn’t changed in the past 35 years; we still provide only the finest natural-source vitamin E. Then we test and retest our products so that everyone will get consistent results, withoutthe setbacks like Dad experienced.

VITAMIN E GAINS NOTORIETYFROM SCIENCE

With over 50 years of of scientific research,Vitamin E has gained notoriety as one of the most predominant and active antioxidant nutrients. The amounts of Vitamin E effective within clinical studies are not obtainable, even from a well-balanced diet, and that is why many people choose a Vitamin E supplement.

NATURAL Vitamin E is the single molecular configuration which occurs in nature. It is called:

8 d-alpha tocopherol 8 d-alpha tocopheryl acetate

8 rrr-alpha tocopherol 8 d-alpha tocopheryl succinate

LONGER RETENTION: Scientists have found Natural Vitamin E isretained in the body many times longer thanSynthetic Vitamin E.

*NATURAL

SYNTHETIC Vitamin E is a mixture of 8 molecular configurations, 7 ofwhich only occur when made by man. It is called:

8 dl-alpha tocopherol 8 dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate

8 all-rac alpha tocopherol 8 dl-alpha tocopheryl succinatedl-dl-

d-d-

This published study measured the proportion of Natural and SyntheticVitamin E in various organs, tissuesand fluids of experimental animalsgiven equal doses of both types of Vitamin E. The preference was then confirmed by measurement ofVitamin E in blood and plasma fromhuman subjects. This study was basedon equal milligram amounts, not IUamounts, which tries to correct forsome of the differences observed.

The International Unit System for Vitamin E was designed toaccount for all of the potency difference between Natural andSynthetic Vitamin E so that 1 IU of Natural Vitamin E would beequivalent to 1 IU of Synthetic Vitamin E. However, there is scientific evidence which challenges it. As Max Horwitt, Ph.D.,indicates “. . . the standardization of the various tocopherols for theirbiological values has not been an exact science.”

The IU system is based on a type of Synthetic Vitamin E which hasnot been commercially manufactured since 1956. The form had 2molecular spacial configurations, one of which does not occur innature. The present Synthetic Vitamin E has 8 molecular spacial configurations, 7 of which do not occur in nature.

*SYNTHETIC

The International Unit [IU] System For Vitamin E Potency “Has Not Been An Exact Science.”

OUR BODIES KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!

Dr. Graham Burton, associated with theNational Research Council of Canada, studiedthe body’s response to Natural Vitamin Ecompared to Synthetic Vitamin E. This studystrongly indicates the body prefers NaturalVitamin E to Synthetic Vitamin E.

Here are some of the results:

5.3 times more Natural Vitamin E was found in the Brain than Synthetic Vitamin E, and . . .

3.6 times more in Red Blood Cells 2.6 times more in the Lungs2.4 times more in the Plasma1.9 times more in the Heart 1.7 times more in the Muscles

MORE IN BODY CELLS:

But can the International Unit System, even if revised, show all thedifferences? Or will our bodies still favor the Natural-source Vitamin E and continue to show higher tissue levels, better absorption and longer retention?

Some researchers, such as Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D., have questionedwhether spacial configurations of tocopherol found only inSynthetic Vitamin E are actually a hindrance to the body becausethey tie up receptor sites, preventing the naturally occurring formof Vitamin E from acting. This is like someone putting the wrongkey into a lock. The right key cannot open a lock when the wrongkey is in it.

CHEMICAL DIFFERENCE:

Here is the reason why:Research scientist Maret Traber’s work indicates that the liver preferentiallyrecycles the natural form of vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol), causing the excretion of synthetic forms and other tocopherols.

SYNTHETIC MISLABELED: Many Vitamin Elabels are misleading to the consumer. MarketedVitamin E products labeled natural have been

tested and found to contain:

• All Synthetic Vitamin E• Part Natural Vitamin E• All Natural Vitamin E

To be sure your Vitamin E is 100% Natural Vitamin E and nota blend containing mostly synthetic Vitamin E, choose onlyproducts that print the following on each bottle label:

TOCOPHEROLS: There are 4 tocopherols calledalpha, beta, gamma, delta. Only Alpha Tocopherol isVitamin E and has activity expressed in interna-

tional units. Beta, gamma, and delta tocopherols aremissing one or more methylgroups on the main structurewhere indicated.

TOCOTRIENOLS: Naturally occurring in foods, the 4 tocotrienols are structurally identical to the 4tocopherols except their tail contains 3 unsaturated

bonds. Like the beta, gammaand delta tocopherol, theydo not stay long in our body.Researchers are studyingtheir unique properties.

SKIN: Natural Vitamin E can help maintain and promote healthy skin.*

ESSENTIAL: Vitamin E is ESSENTIAL to life. We cannot survive without it!

HOW MUCH? Several prominent researchers believethat to perform at its best, the human body needsmore than the U.S.Daily Value (DV) of 30 IU Vitamin E

daily. The average American diet supplies considerably lessthan this amount.

Dr. Evan Shute, a Canadian physician internationally recognized for his 30 years of clinical work with Vitamin E stated, “We think that the average normal female should have400 IU a day and the average normal male about 600 IU a day.”

MEALTIME: Vitamin E should be taken at mealtime.Dr. G.E. Desaulniers of the Shute Medical Clinic hasshown that Vitamin E is absorbed better when taken

with meals rather than on an empty stomach.

IRON: Inorganic IRON can destroy VITAMIN E. TheShute Institute was the first to discover andannounce that inorganic iron, as ferrous sulfate,

can be destructive to the Vitamin E when the two are takentogether. They suggest that when inorganic iron and Vitamin Eare taken, they should be separated in the stomach by an interval of 8 to 9 hours.

Organic iron, however, such as that found in raisins, spinachand other iron-rich foods, can be taken at the same time asVitamin E, with no harm to the Vitamin E. Moderate amountsof organic iron supplements, such as the “Albion process” ironamino acid chelate, can also be taken with Vitamin E.This is the ONLY form of iron Carlson has ever used and willuse with Vitamin E.

ACETATE & SUCCINATE: Two biologically active, preferred forms of Vitamin E are:

d-alpha tocopheryl acetate andd-alpha tocopheryl succinate

Acetate and Succinate are important organic molecules withinour bodies and are involved in numerous biochemical reactions. For example, acetate is an important part of acetylcholine, the neural transmitter required by every nervecell in our bodies to transmit impulses. Moreover, acetate andsuccinate are found in energy producing reactions in everycell. Vinegar contains acetic acid, a form of acetate. Succinateis like two acetic or acetate molecules back-to-back..Because these two forms change to alpha tocopherol during the digestive process, they are active antioxidants. Allforms of Vitamin E are active antioxidants inside our bodies.
