What resources are available? There are currently 3 games in the series, which were anglicised by the DfES and the Canadian owners:

Make it Real for Key Stages 2 and 3

This game is a good foundation tool for delivering Citizenship in Year 6, the new Year 7

CEG outcomes and aiding induction and transition from primary to secondary education.

Real Game for Key Stage 3 The game provides opportunities for the school to link to the wider community

and business. It delivers personal development and can be used across PSHE,

Citizenship and CEG, supporting transition from KS3 to KS4.

Be Real for Key Stage 4 and Post 16

The Be Real game is designed to support the 14-19 agenda by exploring different

pathways and routes into learning, developing occupational and transferable skills.

It delivers many of the learning outcomes for WRL and Enterprise, in addition to CEG.

The Game can also be used in post 16 work-based learning and FE settings to deliver KS4 CEG

outcomes for level 1 and 2 students.

How are the resources used? The resources are flexible and can be used to deliver learning outcomes for CEG, Citizenship or PSHE.

They can also be used cross curricular, especially where timetable allocation is limited, to deliver the

personal development agenda. Many schools use the resources as the bedrock to a careers day or as

part of an enrichment programme.

The resources develop all learning styles; audio, visual and kinaesthetic and encourage team working as

well as individual learning. Whilst enhancing their key skills, students become more knowledgeable about

adult life, which gives them confidence to make decisions and choices whilst in education. They will then

be able to build upon these good foundations, along the pathway to achieving their dreams and

aspirations.

The resources are available throughout the UK. For more information go to www.realgame.co.uk

For Key Stage 2 and 3

The Resource

The Make it Real game provides opportunities for students to explore adult life and how their community

works. The game is divided into 13 units of activities. The resource is flexible and units can be chosen to

meet timetable allocation over a school year and specific learning outcomes. An indication of time is

included within each lesson plan for the topics. The game can be played as an element of a carousel

arrangement or as part of an enrichment programme or careers day. The game is structured to enable

teachers to draw in members of the community and parents to enhance topic areas.

The game is appropriate to deliver Citizenship in Year 6. In Year 7 whilst taking forward the citizenship

agenda the game can be use to deliver CEG outcomes which is now compulsory at KS3. This is particu-

larly around the use of business/ careers vocabulary and the links between educational achievement and

lifestyle. There is also evidence that students gain confidence through playing the game, which supported

their transition from primary to secondary school.

The Game

The central element of the Make it Real game is students assuming life/work roles and working together

in groups to form small businesses. Each class creates a town that is divided into different communities.

Students start the game by receiving a job role. They learn about the skills, interests and duties of their

job. Students learn about the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, planning public buildings,

transport systems and housing in the town they have created and named.

The students then come together to form companies and learn about the mix of skills required by the

workforce. They recruit staff, locate offices, decide on a name and create business cards. Students

complete a group project where they research a foreign country and prepare a presentation.

Page 4: The Real Game Series · 2016-04-25 · The Make it Real Game A lifestyle, learning and earning teaching resource For Key Stage 2 and 3 The Resource The Make it Real game provides

The spin game is a major part of the game that enables teachers to recap over a number of topic areas

and take some questions for class discussion. Students play the spin game within their teams and a

scoring system engenders competition amongst the class.

Students gain an understanding of adult life and see the connexions between education, work and

lifestyle whilst acquiring and practising personal and team building skills, and gaining in confidence.

The Materials

Make it Real come complete with a comprehensive guide and colourful support materials. The guide

includes lesson plans for each of the 13 topic areas to help teaches minimise lesson preparation. The

spin game and question & answer cards are included.

Curriculum outcomes

The game delivers Year 6 & 7 Citizenship and Year 7 CEG outcomes. Guides have been developed

mapping the game against the learning outcomes to help teachers with preparation and to adapt the

game to meet their needs.

The Resource

The game is divided into 5 units covering a total of 18 topics. The resource is flexible and units can be

chosen to meet timetable allocation over a schools year and specific learning outcomes. An indication of

time is included within each lesson plan for the topics. The game can be played as an element of a

carousel arrangement or as part of an enrichment programme or careers day.

The resources provide many opportunities for students to explore adult life and learn team-building skills

in addition to individual learning and developing key skills. These can be transferred to personal decision

making by students making subject choices at the end of KS3. Teachers are also able to draw in

members of the community to enhance the topics being discussed and to draw in topics of particular

relevance to their locality or a newsworthy item at the time.

The Game

Students start by being allocated a job role as a single adult and form neighbourhood groups. They

undertake a series of activities, which explore their dreams about their future lifestyle, accommodation,

transport choices and housing and leisure activities. They learn about a typical day as an adult in their job

role and the educational achievement necessary to reach that position. Students calculate their monthly

income and expenditure. Reality comes when the students have to balance their monthly budgets and

assess how much of their lifestyle choices they can afford. Leisure time is also balanced with work

priorities.

Students are also expose to change and unexpected situations and explore workforce trends and gender

stereotyping. They complete the game by drawing up a job profile based on their own dreams. Students

learn about their own lifestyle priorities and think about financial planning and ultimately their own future

careers.

The Materials

The Real Game comes complete with a comprehensive facilitators guide and support materials. The

guide includes lesson plans for each of the 18 topics included in the game. Photocopiable masters are

included to help teachers minimise lesson preparation. The spin game, question & answer cards and

chance cards are also included.

Curriculum outcomes

The Real Game delivers the CEG, PSHE and Citizenship learning outcomes in Key Stage 3. Guides have

been produced mapping the learning outcomes against the individual topic areas in the game. This

enables teachers to use the game flexibly and to adapt it to fit their desired outcomes.

Developments Work is underway to produce a web version of the game. The new revised version will remain a teaching

resource but will use interactive whiteboards to deliver a more exciting programme for students. Teachers

will have more choice by downloading materials they wish to use. They will also be able to localise the

cost of accommodation and choose job roles that better reflect the local area or aspirations of students.

Students will be able to access the budgeting element on-line which could be used as part of an ICT

lesson or in their own time to enhance their learning. The revised version will be available in Spring 2006.

For Key Stage 4

The Resource

The game is in two parts and is divided into 16 topics. The resource is flexible and units can be chosen to

meet timetable allocation over a schools year and learning outcomes. An indication of time is included

within each lesson plan for the topics. The game can also be played as an element of a carousel

arrangement or as part of an enrichment programme or careers day.

The resources provide many opportunities for students to explore adult life and begin to understand the

choices and responsibilities associated with it. This comes in the form of learning how to budget,

experience different family relationships and the impact and responsibility of making decisions within the

community. Teachers are also able to draw in members of the community to enhance the topics being

discussed and to draw in topics of particular relevance to their locality or a newsworthy item at the time.

The Game

Students begin the games by being given adult roles and family situations. These evolve throughout the

programme as they confront real issues they may face one day as adults.

Within their adult role they:

• learn about qualifications, personal qualities and key skills;

• write a CV and apply for vacancies;

• experience budgeting including accommodation, expenses, savings, transport etc. and the

impact on lifestyle;

• match job role against income and lifestyle choices, problem solving any shortfall in

budgets

• become creative in generating additional ideas for earning additional income.

Page 8: The Real Game Series · 2016-04-25 · The Make it Real Game A lifestyle, learning and earning teaching resource For Key Stage 2 and 3 The Resource The Make it Real game provides

Students experience life change; for example through job loss or becoming a one parent family. They

explore the role of the community selecting representatives, designing and naming their neighbourhoods,

considering planning issues and learning how to influence government decisions.

The spin game is a major part of the game that enables teachers to recap over a number of topic areas

and take some questions for class discussion. Students play the spin game within their teams and a

scoring system engenders competition amongst the class.

In the second part of the game students deploy the skills they have learnt during role play. They apply the

skills to their own lifestyle and wishes, creating their own CV, identifying skills and interests and their

achievements. The students explore careers and set goals for the future, supporting personal decision

making in identifying their post 16 pathways.

The Materials

The Be Real game comes complete with a comprehensive facilitators guide and support materials. The

guide includes lesson plans for each of the 16 games topic areas. Photocopiable masters are included to

help teachers minimise lesson preparation. The spin game and question and answer cards are also

included.

Curriculum Outcomes

The Be Real game takes forward Key Stage 4 learning outcomes in CEG and WRL. It also delivers the

WRL/ Enterprise learning outcomes of financial and enterprise capability, attributes and skills. Guides

mapping the subject learning outcomes against the game have been developed to help teachers.

The Be Real Game Delivering WRL Enterprise Education in Key Stage 4

The Resource

The Be Real game is a lifestyle, learning and earning teaching resource for Key Stage 4. The game

delivers across the personal development agenda of CEG, PSHE, Citizenship and WRL. It also delivers

WRL Enterprise Education, which must be included in the curriculum at Key Stage 4 from September

2005.

The Be Real game is fun and provides opportunities for students to develop entrepreneurial skills and

aptitudes. This comes to life when students identify market opportunities to create additional income

when managing and balancing their monthly budgets. The ideas generated by students are based upon

their own life experiences and the characters they are role-playing. Consequently, most students are able

to achieve desired outcomes.

Be Real and Enterprise Guide

A guide is available on the Real Game website which demonstrates how the Be Real game delivers the

Enterprise outcomes included in the WRL framework and as defined by DfES. How each topic of the

game meets the DfES definition is included in the guide. The division of the game into individual topics

provides flexibility and enables schools to effectively use available timetable resource. The guide also

includes suggestions for enhancing lesson plans and additional questions for the spin game to further

meet Enterprise outcomes.

Links to Work Experience

The school’s work experience programme and Be Real Enterprise delivery can be mutually beneficial if

students undertake their work experience placement between topics 11 and 12 in the game. Students

have the opportunity to seek out and consider enterprise activities within their host companies. On return

to school, the work experience gives further background for students to set personal goals within the latter

part of the game.

Additional Expertise

The Be Real game does not require the services of an external provider. The game can be embedded

within the school’s curriculum and can draw in a range of teachers and tutors. However, drawing in

expertise amongst the community can enhance delivery in school. Education Business Partnerships are

able to offer support to schools, bringing a business focus and experience to the classroom. A local

contact can be found via www.lsc.gov.uk Costs

The Be Real Game costs £90 per pack plus p&p. The kit includes a comprehensive guide with lesson

plans, photocopiable masters and quality, colourful support materials. Student folders are also available

for purchase, at £15 per pack of 10, which enables students to keep their work together.
