According to the National Sleep Founda-tion, the average American sleeps aboutsix hours and 55 minutes per night dur-ing the week, and 15 percent of adultssleep less than six hours per night.

"Lack of sleep can take a significant tollon your overall health and interfere withsome of your daily activities," said Dr.Michael Thorpy, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the MontefioreMedical Center in New York.

Almost everybody has trouble sleepingnow and then, but many Americansexperience significant problems gettingto sleep or continually wake up in themiddle of the night and can't fall backasleep.

Such problems may be clinical symp-toms of insomnia. According to theNational Sleep Foundation, if you havetrouble falling asleep at night or stayingasleep, or you wake up in the morningfeeling unrefreshed, you may be suffer-ing from insomnia.

Insomnia can affect people in differentways. Some sufferers have trouble initial-ly getting to sleep, while others wake upin the middle of the night and have diffi-

culty falling backasleep.

To help you get bet-ter sleep this year,Dr. Thorpy suggeststhese simple tips:

• Set and stick to asleep schedule.Establish a regularbedtime and waketime.

• Set aside time atnight to "winddown." Spend somequiet time beforebedtime. Suchactivities as watch-ing TV, using thecomputer or work-ing right before

bedtime, or in thebedroom, can makeit harder to fallasleep.

• Avoid caffeine andalcohol before bed.

• Exercise regularly.Just don't exerciserigorously near bed-

time and check with your doctor beforestarting an exercise regimen.

• Don't clock-watch. If you awaken in themiddle of the night and stay in bed,don't lie there staring at the clock. Anddon't watch TV or use your laptop or cellphone, because these technologies stim-ulate the brain, making it tougher to fallback to sleep.

you would take steps to child-proof yourhome, so too should you make the sameconcessions for your dog.”

Ryan points out that by taking a few simple

steps, you can improve your dog’s home lifeand your pet ownership experience:

• Be sure proper fencing is installed aroundyour yard.

• When not at home, confine dogs to a cer-tain area of the house to ensure their safety.A first-floor room is preferable in the eventof emergency, such as fire.

• Avoid installing wall-to-wall carpet in pub-lic areas of the house. Because of trafficflow, wood, stone, or tile floors with arearugs are better alternatives.

• When it comes to furniture, considermaterial that’s easy to clean and can with-stand some abuse. Dogs may enjoy mash-ing stuffing in pillows into comfortable

shapes. For sensitive dogs, opt for hypoal-lergenic stuffing.

• Dogs have a tendency to rub againstwalls. Delicate papers can easily becomedamaged. Opt for paint over wall paper.It’s washable and less costly.

• Consult your veterinarian about nutrition.Cooking for dogs with lean meat, poultryand fish can keep them healthier. Grain-freetreats and a raw food diet also work well.

• Stainless steel bowls inside a stone troughcontainer will keep water from spilling all

over the floor. For a feedingbowl, use white buffalo China-- it’s heavy and there’s neverfood residue left behind.

• If your dog likes to sleep inbed with you but is too old orsmall to make the jump fromfloor to bed, consider librarysteps.

• Don’t forgo a duvet justbecause you have dogs. Placea heavy flannel sheet, whichwon’t shift like satin or cotton,over the duvet for your dog tosleep on. On your master beduse flannel sheets and pillow-cases to keep bed linensclean.

• Dog beds should be hypoal-lergenic and covered in cot-ton, which is easy to wash. Ifyou have wooden floors, thebottom of the bed should beultra-suede fabric; so floorswon’t be scuffed or scratched.Avoid wicker baskets becausethey can scratch your floor

and your dogs may be tempted to chewthem.
